...At the same time, the ancient tradition of yumin zhengce (愚民政策, keeping the masses ignorant so they will follow the leaders) is still at the core of Chinese education and propaganda.
In the days of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor, the idea was that an ignorant population would focus on agriculture, thereby providing the solid economic base needed to defend against invaders and conquer enemies.
As Shang Yang (390-338 BC), a prominent scholar and statesman during that period put it: 民愚则易治也 (min yu ze yi zhi ye, an ignorant populace is easy to rule).

Dưới thời phong kiến, câu này không hẳn là miệt thị, mà chỉ thể hiện sự phân tầng giai cấp rõ rệt, bản thân người dân cũng chấp nhận câu này.
Nếu thoả hiệp với cái cổ hủ lạc hậu thì sẽ không có tiến bộ. Do đó không phải phong trào cách mạng nào cũng thành công hoặc thành công ngay được. Ví dụ phong trào bình quyền phát triển được đến nay đã tốt lắm, không còn mấy kiểu miệt thị như trên. Và trong khi thế giới đã đạt được tiến bộ môiix con người là một cá thể độc lập và bình đẳng với những người khác thì tại một số nước xã nghĩa vẫn đem cái đạo Khổng tử ép người ta vào thứ bậc (ngày xưa là để dễ bề cai trị) gắn chặt cái chuyện xưng hô vớ vẩn bất chấp một quy luật thông thường là ai ra đời trước là do tạo hoá lựa chọn. Cái đứa con nít lại đòi làm anh làm chị cái đứa ra đời trước chẳng phải là đi ngược tạo hoá hay sao?
So sánh với tư duy đơn giản và sự thống nhất trong xưng hô của các nước phát triển (ví dụ dễ thấy nhất là "I - you" trong tiếng Anh) mà buồn cười cho cái lối suy nghĩ cổ hủ kia!
Nếu thoả hiệp với cái cổ hủ lạc hậu thì sẽ không có tiến bộ!
Tớ cũng chẳng muốn làm anh làm chị ai, nhưng với những đứa kém tuổi tớ cũng chỉ gọi tên và xưng tên thôi. Ấy thế mà cũng đang dính vụ " nghe các cụ nói cho đủ" như hoalekima nói đây! :)
Tớ thoải mái với những người "dưới" tớ theo tuổi nhưng họ cũng ngần ngại lắm vì ý kiến ý cò của các cụ, các ông chú bà bác, bố mẹ... trong gia đình nên nhiều khi gặp riêng nhau thì tương đối vô tư, chứ hội ngộ họ hàng là vẫn phải này nọ. Mệt! Chính cái cách xưng hô đó làm họ hàng xa nhau chứ chẳng phải để xích lại gần nhau hơn kiểu "có chị có em" như các cụ hay biện hộ. Chẳng qua là nếu các cụ đồng ý với cách xưng hô mới thì "vị thế" của các cụ nhiều phần suy giảm đi thôi! Ai cũng muốn làm anh làm chị làm hùng làm bá làm bề trên người khác trong khi nhìn lại bản thân chưa xứng đáng nên cứ ép lối "đạo đức lễ nghĩa" của Khổng giáo vào để lý luận cho bản thân mà thôi.
Đến giờ thì quan điểm của tớ chưa thay đổi, dù mất lòng người nọ người kia, cả bố mẹ cũng giận dỗi nhưng sẽ không thoả hiệp - bây giờ cũng đâu còn theo "tam tòng" mà chồng chết cũng phải chết theo chồng nữa đâu!? Chưa tiến bộ rồi sẽ tiến bộ - họ cứ bắt mình phải tôn trọng tư tưởng của họ thì họ cũng phải ít nhất suy xét ý kiến của mình chứ hoalekima nhỉ!

Here are six of the 1962 principles China replicated in its subsequent aggressions:
(1) take the adversary by surprise to maximize political and psychological shock;
(2) strike only when the international and regional timing is opportune;
(3) hit as fast and as hard as possible by unleashing "human wave" assaults;
(4) be willing to take military gambles;
(5) mask offense as defense; and
(6) wage war with the political objective to "teach a lesson" — an aim publicly acknowledged by Beijing in the 1962 and 1979 attacks.
China's rapid success in seizing eastern Tibet emboldened it to intervene in Korea.
The classic case of opportunistic timing, however, was 1962: The attack coincided with the Cuban missile crisis, which threatened to trigger nuclear Armageddon and helped cut off India from potential sources of international support.
But no sooner had the U.S. signaled an end to the faceoff with the Soviet Union by terminating Cuba's quarantine than China declared a unilateral cease-fire.
Such was the shrewd timing that throughout the Chinese attack, the international spotlight remained on the U.S.-Soviet showdown, not on China's bloody invasion of India.
Similarly, China seized the Paracel Islands from South Vietnam in 1974 after the U.S. military withdrawal from there had created a strategic vacuum.
It occupied the disputed Johnson Reef in the Spratlys in 1988 when Moscow's support for Vietnam had petered out after the Soviets stopped using Cam Ranh Bay as a major forward deployment base.
And in 1995, China seized Mischief Reef when the Philippines stood isolated after having forced the U.S. to close its major military bases at Subic Bay and elsewhere on the archipelago.
After 29 days, China ended its Vietnam invasion and withdrew, claiming Hanoi had been sufficiently chastised.
It is apparent that new China hews to ancient theorist Sun Tzu's advice: "All warfare is based on deception... Attack where the enemy is unprepared; sally out when it does not expect you. These are the strategist's keys to victory."
Mr Huang, China’s 115th richest man according to Forbes, began his quest to control 300 sq km of barren heathland in northern Iceland last summer, announcing plans to buy the plot and build a luxury resort on it. Earlier this year, in the South China Sea, Beijing used similar tactics to force the Philippine navy off an atoll called the Scarborough Shoal.
But Japan is not the Philippines.
It has a large modern and powerful navy and air force.
If the new Chinese leadership under Xi Jinping is determined to try and do the same with the Senkaku Islands there could be real trouble ahead.

The indictment accused the men of creating a "sophisticated scheme" involving Westernized aliases, a fake website and falsely assumed names of other businesses to conceal their true identities and nationality from the Oregon-based company that makes the technology.
The aim of the unsuccessful scheme, according to the 12-count indictment, was to purchase devices that have "dual use" commercial and military applications without obtaining the required export licenses.

It was 1926, not long after the fall of the Qing dynasty, and much of China had been divided among warlords.
In the south, leaders of the young Kuomintang mustered an army.
At its head rode Chiang Kai-shek, who called to his side officers he had helped train, and together they marched north to take down the warlords, one by one.
The Northern Expedition was one of the first major tests for graduates of the Whampoa Military Academy, founded just two years earlier on quiet Changzhou Island, about 10 miles east of central Guangzhou, then known to the West as Canton.
Mr. Chiang was the academy’s first commandant, appointed by Sun Yat-sen, the idealistic firebrand who wanted to build an army that would unite China.
The academy, now a collection of two-story white buildings near an active naval yard, stands as one of the most potent symbols of the nationalist movement led by Mr. Sun, which has strong contemporary echoes in the rallying cry that Xi Jinping made to his fellow Chinese after taking over in November as general secretary of the Communist Party.

Bloomberg quoted the 21st Century Business Herald report that China had approved the plan to invest at least $1.6 billion to build an airport, pier, and other infrastructure on the West Philippine Sea islands covered by territorial disputes.
Further quoting the 21st Century Herald, Bloomberg also said the construction of some facilities has started and that funds for Sansha would also be spent on marine law enforcement and ocean fisheries.

CHINA’S leaders have tried honoring Ai Weiwei and bribing him with the offer of high positions.
They have tried jailing him, fining him and clubbing him so brutally that he needed emergency brain surgery. In desperation, they have even begged him to behave — and nothing works.

Chuyện đau lòng đó diễn ra trong bối cảnh lương thực hết sạch, mọi người từng nhiều ngày phải ăn giun dế, côn trùng, lá cây, vỏ cây, cỏ dại, và cả đất thó. Kế toán Vương Giải Phóng là người đầu tiên phát hiện vụ ăn thịt trẻ con. Hồi đó, tuy nhà ăn tập thể thực tế đã ngừng hoạt động vì không còn lương thực nữa, nhưng lệnh cấm các gia đình nấu nướng vẫn còn hiệu lực, bếp nhà ai nổi lửa là phạm pháp.
Đêm ấy, đến lượt Vương cùng hai người khác đi tuần. Các mái nhà phủ trắng tuyệt đầu mùa sáng hẳn lên khi vầng trăng nhô ra khỏi đám mây. Nhóm tuần tra phát hiện một dải khói mỏng toả ra từ mái nhà bần nông Mạc Nhị Oa. Họ chia nhau bao vây vu hồi, rồi đồng loạt bấm đèn pin nhảy vào nhà, nổ một phát súng cảnh cáo: tất cả ngồi im! Khi cả 5 người lớn bé bị trói thành một xâu đưa về trụ sở Đại đội sản xuất, trời đã sáng bạch. Cán bộ lãnh đạo địa phương sau khi nghiên cứu cân nhắc, đã quyết định ỉm vụ này đi, vì sợ bị kỷ luật. Sau một ngày bị giam giữ, cả nhà Mạc Nhị Oa lại được tha. Dân làng bàn tán, cho rằng chính phủ ngầm cho phép ăn thịt trẻ con. Thế là nạn ăn thịt trẻ con lan tràn, do “trọng nam khinh nữ”, họ chỉ ăn bé gái, giữ lại bé trai.
Không những ăn thịt, mà còn nghiền vụn xương đầu và tay chân ăn cho bằng hết. Kẻ nhẫn tâm thì làm thịt con ngay tại nhà mình. Kẻ mềm yếu hơn thì “gạt nước mắt đánh đổi với hàng xóm”: trao con mình cho người khác ăn, mang con người khác về làm thịt. Một số xã viên “nhìn xa trông rộng”, đã đi bắt cóc trẻ con ở vùng lân cận về ăn, hoặc gài bẫy trẻ con như bẫy thú, kể cả việc sử dụng một loại thuốc nổ xưa kia dùng để bẫy sói: trẻ nhỏ nhặt được chiếc “kẹo” mùi vị thơm ngon, cho vào miệng nhai liền phát nổ, đầu mặt tan tành, khi gia đình hay tin tìm đến, thì chỉ còn lại vũng máu."...

…Fresh evidence is also being unearthed on the land reform that transformed the countryside in the early 1950s. In many villages there were no ‘landlords’ set against ‘poor peasants’ but, rather, closely knit communities that jealously protected their land from the prying eyes of outsiders – the state in particular. By implicating everybody in ‘accusation meetings’ – during which village leaders were humiliated, tortured and executed while their land and other assets were redistributed to party activists recruited from local thugs and paupers – the communists turned the power structure upside down. Liu Shaoqi, the party’s second-in-command, had a hard time reining in the violence, as a missive from the Hebei archives shows: ‘When it comes to the ways in which people are killed, some are buried alive, some are executed, some are cut to pieces, and among those who are strangled or mangled to death, some of the bodies are hung from trees or doors.’
