'Skeleton in the closet/cupboard' nghĩa đen là một bộ xương người trong tủ. Nó xuất xứ từ thời xa xưa khi người ta tìm thấy một bộ xương người của một nạn nhân bị giết chết và giấu trong một cái tủ quấn áo trong một ngôi nhà bỏ hoang đang được phá đi để xây cái mới. Giờ đây nó được dùng để chỉ một điều gì xấu xa phải che đậy hay việc ô nhục phải giấu giếm trong gia đình. (a discreditable or embarrassing fact that someone wishes to keep secret.)
