"Make a killing" nghĩa là gì?

Apple sẽ lại hốt bạc với iPhone X. Photo courtesy perzon seo.

'Make a killing' nghĩa là kiếm được ối tiền; kiếm được rất nhiều tiền trong một thời gian rất ngắn vì bắt đúng thời cơ (have a great financial success; make a large profit, make a/one's fortune, make money, rake it in, clean up, cash in, make a pretty penny, make big bucks); hốt bạc.

Ví dụ
Bareilly autos, rickshaws make a killing out of rains.

Flipping out over iPhone X - HK resellers aim to make a killing on anniversary model.

Bank of America: Here's how to make a killing from the next tech boom with 'limited risk'.

Freshers week, when all these youngsters are away from home for the first time s**gging anything in sight, is a time when we make a killing.

"Fit the bill" nghĩa là gì?

Chiếc nơ rất hợp với mái tóc*. Photo courtesy David Blackwell.

'Fit the bill' nghĩa là phù hợp/ thích hợp với thực tế, cho mục tiêu cụ thể; chấp nhận được (be suitable for a particular purpose).

Ví dụ
We put a lot of research into finding elegant (trang nhã) fabrics that also fit the bill of the tour with all of her dancing and movement.

Kaltenegger, who stars in the new IMAX film The Search for Life in Space, says roughly three dozen planets fit the bill for habitation (cư trú).

The kinetic (động lực học) energy of the clothes was immediately evident, but how do you bring a personality-packed collection to life? The answer is to find new faces with charm, and this season, no one fit the bill better than Pasha Harulia, the Ukrainian rising star who wore the show’s second look.

What could be worse than drinking weed killer? Well, single-payer health care might fit the bill, if we're to follow the logic of U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, who campaigned for office on the novel platform that he'd rather ingest (ăn vào bụng) poison (thuốc độc) than support the Affordable Care Act.

* Portrait of the French Revolution
The French Revolution ate its own children once it had finished eating its own parents.

On some screens, the shadow of the guillotine on the curtains in the background can not be seen properly. So this is a public health advisory to look carefully: you might cut yourself up. Go slow and let this work on you for a little while. Look at the girl's face, eyes and expression, soak in the tranquility and inner peace, then let your gaze wander over to the shadow and back again. Care to tell me what you feel?

"Under the cosh" nghĩa là gì?

Police brutality against cultural symbol. Photo courtesy fdecomite.

'Under the cosh' có từ cosh là dùi cui -> cụm từ này nghĩa là gặp hoàn cảnh khó khăn hoặc bị chỉ trích kịch liệt/nặng nề (experiencing difficulty or criticism).

Ví dụ
Going the other way, Metro Bank was under the cosh as Macquarie cautioned that its rapid growth and margins (hệ số biên lợi nhuận) will begin to decline as it expands into "less wealthy" London suburbs.

Marques says the binational bridge was essentially a good idea, but now that all budgets are under the cosh, money still being thrown at the project could more usefully be used for cash-strapped (kẹt tiền mặt, bí bách về tiền bạc) local universities.

Africa has in the past been under the cosh due to her lack of knowledge, “intel”, so to speak. And now from information asymmetry, the good internet has ushered in what one can refer to as information blow-back. All of the sudden we are all so much wiser and clued up, awash with so much knowledge and power the Western bullies don’t know where to hide.

Harvard Business School (HBS) has come under the cosh this month. A new book, “The Golden Passport” by Duff McDonald, argues that HBS has lost its crown as the top business school in America and also become a breeding ground for toxic behaviour, with conflicts of interests (xung đột lợi ích) rife (lan tràn, phổ biến, thịnh hành) within the school, and its alumni (cựu sinh viên) responsible for pushing a rapacious (tham lam, keo kiệt, cướp của người khác) form of capitalism that explains many of the ills of the world’s biggest economy.

"Line his pockets" nghĩa là gì?

Tiền từ hệ thống đua xe F1 đã chảy quá nhiều vào túi Bernie. Photo courtesy Paul Williams.

'Line one's pockets' nghĩa giống như trục lợi từ hệ thống để moi tiền cho bản thân, lo nhét đầy túi (if money or a system is lining someone's pockets, that person is receiving too much money or is receiving money that is not intended for them); -> 'lợi dụng chức vụ, quyền hạn' 'thu vén cá nhân' :)

Ví dụ
He only cares to represent wealthy corporate donors who power his campaign and line his pockets.

It's a safe bet that he will be more inclined to listen to those who line his pockets than his constituents.

For Trump, the United Nations is not a venue for weighty issues like war and peace to be hashed (làm hỏng, làm rối tinh lên) out, but just another venue for him to sign up new condo residents to line his pockets.

As usual if Bernie is not a player or it does not benefit him he's negative. He's done enough in the last ten years to both hurt F1 and line his pockets. I wish he'd just go away. Unless he could rid us of the halo. He might deserve a cheer.

"Have him in my pocket" nghĩa là gì?

Pocket bud. Photo courtesy srslyguys.

'Have somebody in one's pocket" nghĩa là dắt mũi ai, khống chế ai (absolutely control someone).

Ví dụ
It's nice to have him in my pocket all the time to make sure I'm doing my job correctly and authentically.

Personally, Handsome Jack is one of the best computer game antagonists (địch thủ, người đối lập) so to have him in my pocket would be incredible.

"When they were very young, they'd be on tour with us, but once they were in school, they had to stay there, so I missed them a lot. So it's nice to have him in my pocket." Perhaps his children making their way forward in music has triggered contemplation (trầm ngâm, trầm tư, tư duy sâu lắng) of the legacy (di sản) of himself and his peers.

"In jig time" nghĩa là gì?

Bất động sản* đã bán, rất nhanh. Photo courtesy William Murphy.

'In jig time' nghĩa là rất nhanh chóng, mau lẹ (very quickly; rapidly).

Ví dụ
Drop a lighted match on it and it'll blaze up to beat a bonfire, which'll spread all over the neighborhood in jig time.

When they saw the rush of boats sweeping across close after them, the feeling was they could have just as easily been off the podium in jig time. So a close third seemed a pretty good outcome, and it maintains Tom Dolan among the fancied contenders for the Mini-Transat itself.

Called Westbury, it was on the same row as this new arrival called Greyfort, it had a price guide of €525,000, and it got very committed bidding. So much so, in fact, that Westbury went ‘sale agreed’ in jig time, was a smooth sale process, and showed up on the Price Register by August 2016, as having made €595,000.

* Malahide Castle, parts of which date to the 12th century, lies, with over 260 acres (1.1 km2) of remaining estate parkland (the Malahide Demesne Regional Park), close to the village of Malahide, nine miles (14 km) north of Dublin in Ireland.

The Castle is one of the oldest in Ireland. From 1185 until 1975, it was the home of the Talbot family.

In 1169, at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, Malahide was under the control of Hammund Mac Turkill, the last Viking King of Dublin.

The estate began in 1185, when Richard Talbot, a knight who accompanied England’s King, Henry II to Ireland in 1174, was granted the "lands and harbour of Malahide".

The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and it was home to the Talbot family for 791 years, the only exception being the period from 1649-1660, when Oliver Cromwell granted it to Miles Corbet after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland; Corbet was hanged following the demise of Cromwell, and the castle was restored to the Talbots.

The building was notably enlarged in the reign of England’s King, Edward IV, and the towers were added in 1765.

The estate survived such losses as the Battle of the Boyne, when fourteen members of the owner's family sat down to breakfast in the Great Hall, and all were dead by evening, and the Penal Laws, even though the family remained Roman Catholic until 1774.

Malahide Castle and Demesne was eventually inherited by the seventh Baron, Lord Milo Talbot and on his death in 1973, passed to his sister, Rose. In 1975, Rose sold the castle to the Irish State, partly to fund inheritance taxes.

The Castle, along with its subsidiary attractions, is operated as a tourist attraction by Dublin Tourism, working with Fingal County Council, which oversees the Castle Demesne.

The main castle can be visited for a fee, on a guided-tour-only basis. In addition, it is possible to hire the famously gothic Great Hall for private banquets. The castle has an eating facility, and adjacent is a craft shop. The castle's best-known rooms are the Oak Room, and the Great Hall, which displays Talbot family history.

Separately, one can visit:

- Museum of Childhood and Tara's Palace. The centrepiece of the museum is Tara's Palace, built to 1/12 scale, drawing on several of Ireland's "great houses" for architecture and design. The Museum, situated in the castle courtyard, also contains antique dolls, toys and other dolls' houses, including one from 1700 and one from the family of Oscar Wilde's mother.

- The Fry Model Railway, a large (2,500 sq ft.) working miniature rail display, from the 1920s-1930s. The railway includes models of stations and Irish features. This appeared to be closed when I visited the castle. See further information below.

- The Talbot Botanic Gardens, situated behind the castle, comprising several hectares of plants and lawns, a walled garden of 1.6 hectares (2007: public access, Weds. only, groups by appointment) and seven glasshouses, including a Victorian period conservatory. Many plants from the southern hemisphere, notably Chile and Australia, are featured.

The demense is one of few surviving examples of 18th century landscaped parks, and has wide lawns surrounded by a protective belt of trees. It can be visited freely, with a number of entrances and car parking areas. In addition to woodland walks, and a marked "exercise trail", the park features actively used sports grounds, including a cricket pitch and several football pitches, a 9-hole par-3 golf course, an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts and a boules area. There is also a modern children's playground near the castle.

'Bide one's time' nghĩa là kiên nhẫn đợi tới cơ hội làm việc gì (to wait patiently for a good opportunity to do something); chờ thời.

Ví dụ
Gemini, today the stars say to bide your time, you’re not cleared for launching new projects today.

You’ll have to check back with us for more details on this new Air VaporMax colorway, but to bide your time, be sure to take a look at the best VaporMax sneakers available right now.

Bide your time with a new online 8-bit game that allows you to pilot paper boat S.S. Georgie through the sewers of Derry, Maine to collect red balloons and avoid the clutches of the terrifying Pennywise the clown.

Since Deng Xiaoping began liberalising the economy, most leaders had followed his sage advice to “hide your strength and bide your time”. But such days of caution are truly past—under Xi, a team of new leaders is eager to announce China’s arrival at the high table of international affairs. “Make China’s voice heard, and inject more Chinese elements into international rules”, Xi exhorted CPC politburo members.

"Time hangs heavy" nghĩa là gì?

Lưới nặng, cá đầy. Photo courtesy Danumurthi Mahendra.

'Time hangs heavy' nghĩa là thời gian nặng nề (trôi) vì bạn (gần như) chẳng có việc gì để làm (if time hangs heavy, it seems to pass slowly because you do not have enough to do).

Ví dụ
A clock ticks somewhere in the silence of your apartment, empty second after empty second, reminding you that time hangs heavy when you have lost your way, like a vise (mỏ cặp, êtô) around your neck.

Try spending time with your loved ones instead of worrying about them. When time hangs heavy on your hands, scroll through your phone. If looking at someone’ number or picture on WhatsApp brings a reminiscent (hồi tưởng, gợi nhớ) smile to your face, call them — the time to catch up is now!

Set inside a coffin, this unusual and ingenious (khéo léo, tài tình, mưu trí) thriller pretty much corners the market in claustrophobia (nỗi lo sợ mình bị giam giữ). Ryan Reynolds is an American contractor (nhà thầu) in Iraq who awakes buried alive with only a mobile, a lighter and a light-stick for company. Inevitably, time hangs heavy here and there, but Rodrigo Cortés is highly inventive (đầy sáng tạo, óc sáng chế) in teasing out the sweaty terror.

"Time flies when you're having fun" nghĩa là gì?

Tiếng yêu tôi chưa kịp xếp vần. Photo courtesy Stig Nygaard.

'Time flies when you're having fun' nghĩa là khi vui vẻ ta thấy thời gian trôi qua thật nhanh, chẳng bao lâu đã hết (something that you say which means that time passes quickly when you are enjoying yourself); thường được dùng với ý hài hước, châm biếm khi nói về một hoạt động gì đó chẳng vui (often used humorously when you are talking about an activity which was not enjoyable).

Ví dụ
Everybody knows the best part of any trip is the souvenirs, but after five weeks of performing in 23 cities, members of the Phoenix Boys Choir say the best thing they took away from their tour in China was the memories... She says she's beyond grateful to the program, as it offers the opportunity to experience things many teenagers only dream of, adding time flies when you're having fun.

Jamie Heaslip and wife Sheena O’Buachalla are celebrating one year of wedded bliss. The Irish rugby star (33) wed the marketing executive (31)) last year in a star-studded ceremony at the Newman University Church on St Stephen's Green last August, with a number of Heaslip's Ireland teammates in attendance with their other halves. And he marked the occasion with a sweet tribute to one year of married life on Instagram, sharing some never-before-seen pictures of the big day, where their bowtie clad bulldog Jay-Z took centre stage. "How time flies when you're having fun! 1 year on and going strong," he captioned the pictures, before tagging his wife, who took his name after they wed.

'The devil’s own time' = thời gian của quỷ -> nghĩa là thời kỳ/thời khắc rất khó khăn (a very difficult time; a hellish time).

Ví dụ
If, in 1976, liberals were hypnotizing (thôi miên) themselves over what they thought Jimmy Carter would be, they took the devil's own time doing it.

We've had the devil's own time trying to get cattle killed during 2014, because the current meatworks in the north have a far better supply than their kill capacities.

The island peoples of the South Pacific who have had to move off their small, fragile places and into the cities on larger islands like New Zealand have had the devil's own time adjusting.

Freely adapting Allison Pearson's 2002 London-set best-seller, adjusted to Boston and New York locales and a tougher economy, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna has the devil's own time juggling agendas.

* No border, no nation: on 21 June 2015, a crowd of 5,000 people marched onto the German parliament in Berlin, protesting European immigration policy. Inspired by the Centre for Political Beauty's art project “The Dead Are Coming”, attendants brought flowers and self made wooden crosses and turned the lawn in front of the Reichstag into a symbolic graveyard. In the end, more than a hundred hand dug graves served to commemorate the thousands of anonymous refugees who die each year trying to cross the border into Europe.

the epitaph reads “borders kill” / “kill borders”.

"It's feeding time at the zoo" nghĩa là gì?

Trật tự, quy củ. Photo courtesy Eric Kilby.

'It's feeding time at the zoo' = đến giờ ăn trong sở thú -> hàm ý một nhóm người ăn uống nhộn nhạo, không kiểm soát nổi (something that you say when a group of people are eating together in a way that is not controlled or organized).

Ví dụ
As we all know, these bus rides aren’t always filled with rainbows and sunshine. Some bus stops can look like it’s feeding time at the zoo during those class hours. Simple discomforts like overcrowding and being sneezed on by the student next to you are still unpleasant, but they are norms on the bus system.

When we go into their room, they break into a fight. Then the tantrums (cơn thịnh nộ, cơn tam bành) begin with the three-year-old, because if it's not a pink sparkly dress, she'll go ballistic (nổi khùng). Then there will be another fight, because one of them is wearing a bow the other one wants. Then it's feeding time at the zoo. I'm still in my pyjamas, looking like something you dragged out of a bush.

We take it for granted that lions should eat meat and giant pandas should eat bamboo, for no more evidence-based reason than: that’s what they eat. That’s what they are adapted to eat. There are, to my knowledge, no randomized trials to determine who gets what when it’s feeding time at the zoo. Homo sapiens are constitutional (thể tạng, thể chất) omnivores (động vật ăn tạp). That is not controversial, representing the consensus view of every qualified biologist, physiologist, and anthropologist to opine (cho rằng, chủ trương là, phát biểu về) on the matter. Some go further, such as E.O. Wilson in The Social Conquest of Earth, to note, for instance, human adaptations not only to meat — but to cooked meat. The hunt, and the tribal fire around which its success was celebrated, are of common, ancient lineage.

"In no time flat" nghĩa là gì?

Bài kiểm tra dễ quá, tớ làm loáng cái là xong. Photo courtesy Alena Navarro- Whyte.

'In no time flat' nghĩa là rất ít thời gian, không tốn bao nhiêu thời gian, chẳng chóng thì chầy, v.v... (in a very little amount of time).

Ví dụ
In no time flat, TF Cornerstone has leased 120 apartments at its new Downtown Brooklyn development.

In fairness, Noah argued, anyone working for Donald Trump can be expected to become paranoid (hoang tưởng) in no time flat.

The house, which is being built where a previous '50s ranch-style bungalow (nhà gỗ, nhà một tầng lầu) was knocked down in the spring, is going up in no time flat.

If you use a regular 3.5-to-3.5-millimetre cable instead of the supplied one there's no limitation and the music goes as loud as the player will take it. Your kid will be onto this in no time flat and can buy such a cable for $10 anywhere they sell sound equipment.

"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime" nghĩa là gì?

Bị phạt. Photo courtesy Beryl_snw.

'If you can't do the time, don't do the crime' nghĩa là đừng cư xử không đứng đắn, ăn ở bậy bạ nếu bạn không sẵn sàng chấp nhận hình phạt (do not misbehave if you are unprepared or unwilling to accept the punishment).

Ví dụ
Giving Elliott a pass certainly does set a precedent. Rather, it continues a very poor precedent of not handing down proper punishment for offenders. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime on the field or off.

They say 'if you can't do the time don't do the crime' but the 'time' can be tougher that lags might imagine in some of the world's most brutal prisons. From tiny dark cells with buckets for toilets to brutal violence and a existence deprived of daylight some prisons are hell on earth.

Sen. Sessions has often repeated the adage (châm ngôn, ngạn ngữ), “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.” And he is right—in a society built on law and order, those who commit crimes must expect to be held accountable. But that accountability must uphold human dignity by staying in due proportion to the harm done, and it must not ultimately cause even greater harm to the community.

'Time works wonders' = thời gian làm nên những điều kỳ diệu -> nghĩa là theo thời gian trôi, nhiều vấn đề sẽ được giải quyết (The passing of time can resolve many problems).

Ví dụ
In politics, whatever may be discussed does not require to be cut into the quick. Time works wonders in allaying (làm dịu, lắng xuống) religious and political emotions.

I was left with five children and the sixth one was born two months after he was killed, but I lost my dear wee darling when she was ten months old with pneumonia (viêm phổi). 'Time to call it a night' nghĩa là đã đến lúc kết thúc việc gì (làm lụng, tiệc tùng) và đi ngủ (it's time to quit one's activities for the night, Can refer to work or partying).

Ví dụ
It's time to call it a night after hours of painting and a lot of contemplation (tư duy sâu lắng, trầm ngâm, suy tính).

After failing to eat a dumpling (bánh bao, bánh hấp) in an incredibly specific way — much to the distress of the owners — and embarrassing myself sufficiently it was time to call it a night.

Senior sergeant Mike Sutton said it appeared a group of work colleagues staying in one of Margrain Vineyard's villas befriended a group of locals at a Martinborough pub. They all returned to the villa to continue drinking. The assault happened after the hosts decided it was time to call it a night.

Wheeling has had a curfew (lệnh giới nghiêm) for minors (trẻ vị thành niên) in place for decades. When the city’s population was bursting with young baby boomers, the local fire houses would soun their fire whistles at 10 p.m. to let juveniles (vị thành niên) know it was time to get off the streets. 'Time out of mind' nghĩa là thời điểm rất lâu rồi, rất xa xưa, không thể nhớ được (long before one would be able to remember; a very long time ago).

Ví dụ
The "good ol' boy" system has stagnated (đình trệ, đình đốn, tù hãm, mụ mẫm) Tahlequah and other cities its size since time out of mind.

The government had suddenly decided that the practice of segregating (phân biệt, cách ly, cô lập) pupils in mixed-sex schools was problematic despite knowing about, and ignoring, the practice for “time out of mind”, adding: “This is the antithesis of proper public decision making.”

I’ve been following foreign politicians during their campaigns for more than 20 years. Never has there been an accommodation problem, not even with Mitt Romney or Emmanuel Macron. Macron’s campaign managers constantly kept journalists up to speed and laid on a press bus if he visited a market somewhere. You might miss something for organisational reasons, but then you’d make up for it the next day. That’s the way it works in democracies, as it has since time out of mind. Except for Donald Trump. Except for Theresa May.

'Time is of the essence' = căn bản là thời gian -> nghĩa là thời gian là yếu tố cân nhắc chính trong tình huống này (Time is a key consideration in this situation (often because time is limited or a specific deadline must be met)).

Ví dụ
Time is of the essence when diagnosing (chẩn đoán), treating herpes (bệnh mụn giộp).

If you haven't made your reservations yet, time is of the essence if you want to see the total solar eclipse (nhật thực).

If time is of the essence try Zipjet instead of dashing out for a new outfit. This London-based service operates in the same way as Laundrapp, but can get your clean clothes back to you in as little as six hours.

"Take time by the forelock" nghĩa là gì?

'Take time by the forelock' có từ forelock là tóc mái trước trán, bờm trước của ngựa -> giống như nếu thời gian được hình dung có forelock thì ta sẽ tóm lấy khi nó đến, chứ không phải khi nó rời đi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là hành động dứt khoát, không do dự, không bỏ lỡ cơ hội (to act decisively; to accept an opportunity without hesitation).

Ví dụ
The Philadelphians are taking time by the forelock, and have already made out a programme for their part of the inaugurating ceremonies in March.

Both Mr. Darnton and Mr. Borneman seem to be surprised by the way in which the East Germans ultimately seize time by the forelock, boot out the old slippery mob of leaders and embrace West Germany.

It may be thought heartless to allude (ám chỉ, nói bóng gió) to the fact, but the 1st of May, -- the day most dreaded of the 366 in the leap-year calendar, -- is upon us. To-day families who have not appeased (nhân nhượng, nhượng bộ) landlords (chủ nhà) by submitting to the threatened addition to their rent, must take up their beds, carpets, sofas, and chairs, and travel to new abiding places. The clear sky yesterday tempted many to take time by the forelock, and cartloads of furniture were to be seen traversing the City in every direction.

Ví dụ

We also need to gerrymander (sắp xếp gian lận những khu vực bỏ phiếu để giành phần thắng trong cuộc tuyển cử) along racial lines to guarantee wins, then stall for time before complying with the unamimous court decision.

The piece also mentions that Anthem, and in particular Jeff Jarrett, are currently looking to stall for time in the hopes of dissuading (can gián, can ngăn) the Hardys from pursuing the matter any further.

Those who would rather stall for time and argue that it is wise to wait for greater certainty will find instead that the climate system is moving into new unexpected regimes.

'Have a rare old time' = có thời gian xưa cũ hiếm hoi -> nghĩa là có khoảng thời gian vui thú ở một bữa tiệc hay điều gì đó tương tự (a fine and enjoyable time at a party or something similar).

Ví dụ
Dr Jones was high up in the Lancashire hills, watching other people’s fireworks displays for free and having a rare old time.

Johnny Hayes was having a rare old time delivering crosses into the danger area but the breakthrough owed everything to the tenacity (sự ngoan cường, kiên trì) of young Christie.

At a time when Trump's team was accused (bị lên án, kết tội) of colluding (thông đồng, cấu kết) with the Russians in the recent election, the photos showed the president having a rare old time with foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and the Kremlin's man in Washington, Sergey Kislayak.
