"Take time by the forelock" nghĩa là gì?

'Take time by the forelock' có từ forelock là tóc mái trước trán, bờm trước của ngựa -> giống như nếu thời gian được hình dung có forelock thì ta sẽ tóm lấy khi nó đến, chứ không phải khi nó rời đi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là hành động dứt khoát, không do dự, không bỏ lỡ cơ hội (to act decisively; to accept an opportunity without hesitation).

Ví dụ
The Philadelphians are taking time by the forelock, and have already made out a programme for their part of the inaugurating ceremonies in March.

Both Mr. Darnton and Mr. Borneman seem to be surprised by the way in which the East Germans ultimately seize time by the forelock, boot out the old slippery mob of leaders and embrace West Germany.

It may be thought heartless to allude (ám chỉ, nói bóng gió) to the fact, but the 1st of May, -- the day most dreaded of the 366 in the leap-year calendar, -- is upon us. To-day families who have not appeased (nhân nhượng, nhượng bộ) landlords (chủ nhà) by submitting to the threatened addition to their rent, must take up their beds, carpets, sofas, and chairs, and travel to new abiding places. The clear sky yesterday tempted many to take time by the forelock, and cartloads of furniture were to be seen traversing the City in every direction.

'Stall for time' nghĩa là câu giờ, trì hoãn (to cause a delay intentionally).

Ví dụ
To stall for time until a professional negotiator arrived, Tsang began talking to the man.

We also need to gerrymander (sắp xếp gian lận những khu vực bỏ phiếu để giành phần thắng trong cuộc tuyển cử) along racial lines to guarantee wins, then stall for time before complying with the unamimous court decision.

The piece also mentions that Anthem, and in particular Jeff Jarrett, are currently looking to stall for time in the hopes of dissuading (can gián, can ngăn) the Hardys from pursuing the matter any further.

Those who would rather stall for time and argue that it is wise to wait for greater certainty will find instead that the climate system is moving into new unexpected regimes.

'Have a rare old time' = có thời gian xưa cũ hiếm hoi -> nghĩa là có khoảng thời gian vui thú ở một bữa tiệc hay điều gì đó tương tự (a fine and enjoyable time at a party or something similar).

Ví dụ
Dr Jones was high up in the Lancashire hills, watching other people’s fireworks displays for free and having a rare old time.

Johnny Hayes was having a rare old time delivering crosses into the danger area but the breakthrough owed everything to the tenacity (sự ngoan cường, kiên trì) of young Christie.

At a time when Trump's team was accused (bị lên án, kết tội) of colluding (thông đồng, cấu kết) with the Russians in the recent election, the photos showed the president having a rare old time with foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and the Kremlin's man in Washington, Sergey Kislayak.

"Hardly have time to breathe" nghĩa là gì?

'Hardly/scarcely have time to breathe' nghĩa là rất bận (to be very busy); không có thời gian để thở.

Ví dụ
JMC staffer Mohammad Aslam said that he would hardly have time to breathe while issuing papers at the fair.

Between new cast members and an old sibling rivalry, we hardly have time to breathe between one dramatic moment and the next.

Shruti Hassan: I'm really extremely, truthfully, totally single! Between working in three industries, I hardly have time to breathe, much less be in a relationship.

I had an extremely tight deadline and I was contacting these restaurants during the height of their season. They hardly have time to breathe in the summer and here I was asking them for recipes, photo shoots, edits to recipes, background on their restaurants and more. As you can imagine, it was challenging. I got my fiftieth restaurant just in the nick of time.

"Drastic times require drastic measures" nghĩa là gì?

'Drastic times require drastic measures' có từ drastic là mạnh mẽ, quyết liệt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ở những hoàn cảnh/tình huống cực đoan thì cần những biện pháp quyết liệt (extreme and undesirable circumstances or situations can only be resolved by resorting to equally extreme actions, derived from the proverb, "desperate diseases must have desperate remedies": bệnh hiếm thuốc hay).

Ví dụ
Drastic times require drastic measures: If 70%-80% of all new digital ad revenue is going to just two players then something drastic is clearly needed. The old adage of your enemy’s enemy is your friend springs to mind.

Drastic times require drastic measures: Aimee Lucido, a software engineer who works at Uber currently, wrote yesterday that she is staying at Uber because she feels like the work she is doing is important.

Republicans, stand your ground on Obamacare - America's greatest threat: We are facing the untenable (không trụ vững được) specter (bóng ma) of schools and other services "falling off the cliff." Drastic times require drastic measures. As a footnote, my wife is a Tier One employee very near retirement, and we are prepared to be part of the solution (lower than promised retirement benefits) provided others, including existing retirees, are required to shoulder their share of the burden.

"Better luck next time" nghĩa là gì?

Muốn có bao điện thoại BlackBerry mới, lần sau nhé. Photo courtesy OtterBox.

'Better luck next time' nghĩa là (chúc bạn) may mắn hơn lần sau, cụm từ này có thể là chân thành an ủi, hoặc mang sắc thái châm biếm người mắc lỗi (an expression that comforts/ridicules someone for a failure).

Ví dụ
Escape isn't far now. Climb the stairs and up the ladder to complete the chapter. Too bad escape isn't so easy. Better luck next time, Kid.

Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are both looking ahead to the next race where they're wishing for better luck after both exited the Austrian Grand Prix at the opening corner on the opening lap, having been involved in a Turn 1 incident caused by Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat.

Although BlackBerry’s latest, and so far last, QWERTY phone has been making rounds on the Internet, it hasn’t actually made official rounds in the US. That all changes this Friday as the BlackBerry KEYone finally does land in the US. But if you’ve been pining to get your hands on this one through a carrier, better luck next time. Unless you’re already on Sprint, because that’s the only place you’ll be able to get it in the US for now.

"All the time in the world" nghĩa là gì?

Không có quá nhiều thời gian để nấu bữa sáng*. Photo courtesy Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo.

'All the time in the world' = tất cả thời gian trên thế giới này -> nghĩa là thoải mái về mặt thời gian, không bị giới hạn về thời gian (no time restrictions whatsoever).

Ví dụ
Life is short. But television, these days, acts as if you had all the time in the world.

Keep in mind that you also have all the time in the world between volleys to reposition and charge your Arms. You may as well do so, especially in team matches where you’ll want to keep one play in front and the other in back.

I used to have all the time in the world to make dinner. See, I was a freelance food writer, and it was my job to obsess about what to cook, how to cook it and how to frame it for an Instagram post. Then I did something crazy — took a full-time legit job as editorial director at cookbook publisher Clarkson Potter. And now. . . those languid (chậm chạp) days of dinner dreaming are gone, baby, gone.

"A week is a long time in politics" nghĩa là gì?

Một tuần dài lắm anh ơi*. Photo courtesy Surrey County Council.

'A week is a long time in politics' = trong chính trị, một tuần là khoảng thời gian dài -> nghĩa là do tình hình biến đổi quá nhanh của viễn cảnh chính trị, tương lai của một chính trị gia hoặc một nhóm chính trị có thể thay đổi nhanh chóng chỉ trong 1 tuần (due to the fast-changing pace of the political landscape, the fortunes of a politician or political group can change drastically just in the course of a single week).

Ví dụ
A week is long time in politics: Has Labour regained some ground?

If a week is a long time in politics, then a year must seem like a lifetime.

The old Harold Wilson quote that 'a week is a long time in politics' could probably have its timescale revised these days to 'about every ten minutes'.

Corbyn is the stand-out naming trend this year, and we expect to see lots of babies conceived at Glastonbury or over the election period named after the Labour leader. But remember a week is a long time in politics and your child will have that name for a lifetime, so do consider the effects of naming a child after any politician.

'Time to call it a day' = it's time to quit for the day -> nghĩa là đã đến lúc kết thúc (một ngày làm việc,...).

Ví dụ
Time to call it a day if security cannot be stepped up.

The resurgent Labour leader believes it is time to “call it a day” on the Royals when Elizabeth II dies.

In recent years the numbers attending the annual reunions has been falling and now organiser Bernard Rose thinks it may be time to call it a day.

Rhian confessed to The Sun earlier this year: 'I’ve had an amazing ten years but I think it’s time to call it a day. 'I’ll still be modelling, I just won’t be taking my bra off anymore... I want to quit while I’m ahead.'

"Time and tide wait for no man" nghĩa là gì?

Nhanh lên chứ, em không đợi được. Photo courtesy Eva Peris.

'Time and tide wait for no man' = thời gian và sóng biển không chờ đợi ai -> nghĩa là không thể dừng hay làm chậm lại thời gian (one cannot stop or slow the passage of time).

Ví dụ
A couple of years may seem like a century away, but time and tide wait for no man. Between now and then, India has another 53 ODI’s to work out a squad. Fifty-three! That’s more than what I got on my Grade 10 math test.

As Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the earliest English poets put it: "Time and tide wait for no man." Unlike with wind and solar, the amount of energy being produced from tides is predictable months in advance and is now being recognized as a major renewable resource.

The old sailor's saying “Time and tide wait for no man” has always stuck with me because of how accurately it depicts surfing in New York. It’s very hard to find good waves in NY with all the elements needed to line up (wind, tide, swell from storms that don’t come that often, sandbars eroding etc.).

"Since time immemorial" nghĩa là gì?

"Mụ phù thủy" có từ thời xa xưa... Photo courtesy Massachusetts Office of Tourism.

'Since time immemorial' nghĩa là thời điểm rất lâu rồi, rất xa xưa, không thể nhớ được (since a very long time ago; time extending beyond the reach of memory, record, or tradition, indefinitely ancient).

Ví dụ
To this day, witch trials result in violence against women, including murder, as they have done since time immemorial – from the hangings at Salem and violent 15th-century European witch hunts to the the 500 “witches” killed in Tanzania each year and the continuing persecution of “witch children” in Gambia.

There are indeed people who have sex with other people in return for dinner, or to pay off bills and debts, or to buy things they want. There are people who are enamoured by the high life when they move to a new place and feel anxious when they don’t fit in, and there are people who spend their money in ways that don’t ensure month-long nutrition in favour of keeping up appearances of wealth, or to feed a gambling or drug habit, or to lead the life they’re used to living. All of these things happen, and have been happening in different forms since time immemorial. It’s just insulting to call any of it actual poverty, and a bit funny and classist to be so shocked that this is happening. The fact that the author seems to find the concept of voluntary sex work so very astonishing and worthy of dissection as a “new” facet of poverty, for example, says a lot about her social location and knowledge of how the world works, and that of her intended readers.

"Put your trousers on one leg at a time" nghĩa là gì?

'Put one's trousers on one leg at a time' (just like everybody else) = mặc quần từng ống một (như những người khác) -> nghĩa là (sống) như một người bình thường (to be an ordinary human being; to go through life like everyone else, thường nói về người mẫu, ngôi sao bóng đá, thành viên hoàng gia).

Ví dụ
He (Barack Obama) was amazing and my mum beforehand – because I was nervous before going out – she just said, “Remember everybody puts their trousers on one leg at a time, even the President. He’s going to be a normal guy”

There is protocol to address before issuing a new mouse. Is the mouse properly connected to the computer? Is the mouse on a fancy wood grained desk pattern not allowing the light to properly sense position? Has the computer been rebooted? Most of the time, the mouse issue can be resolved by following those troubleshooting steps. No need to stop a technician from what they're doing and force them to run up four flights of stairs and hand deliver a mouse. "But Ant, this is the CEO of the company who needs a new mouse." In that case, you might escalate the incident because of the corporate hierarchy. Yeah, I know that the CEO is just another human who puts their trousers on one leg at a time like the rest of us. But there comes an inherent amount of respect for the company's fearless leader that says, "We better keep the CEO happy."

'Make good time' = to proceed at a fast or reasonable rate -> nghĩa là hoàn thành nhanh chóng (một chuyến đi, v.v...).

Ví dụ
The trail is in good shape, and we're able to make good time. We reach the end of the boreal, and from then on, are travelling on sea ice.

You want to go fast to make good time, but not so fast where you're in big trouble. If you get arrested, that will surely screw up your time.

There was no difficulties in completing the final leg on Sunday with fine conditions allowing Puklowski to make good time through the Marlborough Sounds, French Pass and Tasman Bay.

“Our body is designed to move, but in a car, our movement is restricted. If you’re driving long distances, pull over every couple of hours, take a short walk. This is not only good for circulation, but also keeps you alert. Rotate legs, hands, wrists, shoulders. If the drive is over 30 minutes, do the wrist, hand and ankle rotations in your seat,” says Dr Singh. So no, don’t try and do a straight six-hour drive to make good time.

Long time, no see! Tennis great Andre Agassi, 46, returned to the limelight on Wednesday night in Melbourne, fulfilling ambassador duties for Swiss watch company Longines.

As the 20th century progressed, "long time no see" began to evolve from a phrase in broken English to a standard way to greet an old acquaintance. By 1920, the phrase makes it into Good Housekeeping magazine.

"Live on borrowed time" nghĩa là gì?

'Live on borrowed time' = sống bằng thời gian đi mượn -> nghĩa là còn sống sau một cơn bạo bệnh hiểm nghèo (to exist only because of good fortune; to live on when death was expected); tiếp tục tồn tại lâu hơn ngoài dự kiến (to continue to exist longer than expected).

Ví dụ
McKinsey believes this group of institutions will live on borrowed time and will have to make significant cuts in one direction or another.

Unlike corporations, startups live on borrowed time and limited cash. As such, the extra effort is necessary towards turning a profit or raising the next round of funding.

While Trump doesn’t believe in global warming, 99 percent of the world’s population knows we live on borrowed time by the way we destroy our planet – so it would be best to set out and colonize space.

The economy continues to expand for now, which is great, but history tells us that we are beginning to live on borrowed time before the market begins to take away what it has given. This is not to say a crash is on its way; it just means investors need to become increasingly selective as to where they put their money.
