"Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave" nghĩa là gì?

'Seek education/knowledge from the cradle to the grave' = học là việc cả đời,

children's discovery museum, bangkok, thailand, 16/11/2017.

Ví dụ
On Nov 20, Pakistan’s children point out that every girl and boy has a right to learn. They remind us that one should seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave — yet 22.6m of them remain out of school, 12.1m of them girls. As they take over the spaces that are normally reserved for adults, Pakistan’s children ask us how we protect them from violence, abuse and exploitation.

"Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave." This is a verse from the Qur'an I believe everyone should aspire to live by, especially women. In generations gone by, women were made to believe that their place was in the kitchen, that their job was to be a wife and a mother and to look after their family. This patriarchal belief system had women believing that they didn't need to pursue their education or work towards a career, and that the husband would be the breadwinner and provide for all the needs. The women were financially dependent on their husbands.

“The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr.” “Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.” “God has revealed to me, ‘Whoever walks in the pursuit of knowledge I facilitate for him the way to heaven.’ “The best form of worship is the pursuit of knowledge.” “Scholars should endeavor to spread knowledge and provide education to people who have been deprived of it. For, where knowledge is hidden it disappears.”
Some one asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Who is the biggest scholar?” He replied: “He who is constantly trying to learn from others, for a scholar is ever hungry for more knowledge.” Seek for knowledge and. wisdom, or whatever the ‘vessel from which it flows, you will never be the loser.” “Thinking deep for one hour (with sincerity) is better than 70 years of (mechanical) worship.”

"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" nghĩa là gì?

'The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world' = bàn tay đưa nôi là bàn tay ngự trị thế gian

-> người nuôi dưỡng chính là người sẽ định hình nhân cách đứa trẻ và từ đó ảnh hưởng/tác động tới loại hình xã hội mà thế hệ kế tiếp sẽ tạo ra (the person who raises a child determines the character of that child and so influences the type of society that the next generation will create),

nhật an 14 tuần tuổi, grand palace, bangkok, thailand, 18/11/2017.

Ví dụ
As per statistics, 72% of single mothers were literally on the road trying to eke out a living doing the most menial of jobs. Indira Gandhi was a role model for all of them. She proved to the world that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world

When academicians find the need to explain Islamic terrorism and the bloody savage behavior of the decapitating jihadists, they find willing accomplices within the ranks of the media and Hollywood and simply cite the “crimes“ of the Christian Crusades and the centuries of Western imperialism, sexism and racism. It’s no wonder that the youth of today fall easy prey to biased history and leftist propaganda and begin to hate the system — capitalism, Judeo-Christian ethics, and the entire “patriarchal” Western civilization. But if parents are not there to guide and instruct their children, the novices will be indoctrinated by others espousing their own agendas. One must remember the adage, “the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world.” The task is too important to completely leave to others, and parents cannot totally relinquish the teaching of their children.

Ví dụ
Trump EPA 'Cooks the Books' to Hide Benefits of Clean Power Plan.

Ex-Tesco Execs Bullied Staff To Cook The Books.

The former footballer, 38 - whose girlfriend and former TOWIE star Kate Wright says she is quitting show business to focus on her new beau and his brood - said he'd always been a closed book when it comes to emotion - but that he treasures brief moments of happiness with his children more than he did before Rebecca passed away.

"Read him like a book" nghĩa là gì?

'Read sb like a book' = đọc ai như đọc sách -> nghĩa là hiểu rõ về ai, đọc vị ai (to analyze and understand someone well); nắm (ai) trong lòng bàn tay.

Ví dụ
Brown predicts that Beijing will get more from Trump than they give, partly, because they've read him like a book.

"They read him like a book. They gave him exactly what they wanted, with all the pomp and circumstance, treated him like a king, and it's worked,"

The Washington Post dropped a bombshell report that the Obama administration knew well in advance of Russia’s interference campaign, but hesitated on how to respond. It also pointed out that it seemed the Obama White House was afraid of Russia and what they would do if they reacted strongly. In the end, they booted a few suspected Russian operatives, closed a couple of their compounds, and enacted sanctions that had a de minimis effect. Russia views this as a slap on the wrist and Obama failed miserably in deterring similar action in the future. Yet, Obama did nothing when Russia annexed Ukraine and did nothing when Russia elbowed their way into Syria. They read him like a book and his reaction was no different in this instance. Liberals criticized Bush for him sitting while school children listened to a rendition of “The Pet Goat” when the nation was under attack on 9/11. Obama dropped the ball for weeks on how to respond to Russia.

The book-hurler was Barrows’ then 15-year-old daughter, Esme, who had a very good reason to throw the book at her mother, who became a household name with the 2008 bestseller, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.”

Ví dụ
Pat dug worms for children ready with cane poles and tried every trick in the book to outwit persistent backyard geese and ducks.

Stand-in West Brom goalkeeper Boaz Myhill earlier had Leicester fans baying for his blood after using every trick in the book to keep the Foxes at bay.

Donald Trump has thrown every trick in the book at North Korea - but sanctions might not be enough.

Not giving up, Kellywise tries every trick in the book to convince "Cooper" to have her on his show, including threatening him with his two greatest fears (Trump winning a second term as president and a headline that says "Anderson Cooper Fat Now").

'Bring someone to book' nghĩa là hỏi tội và trừng phạt ai (to confront or question one about one's wrongdoings, often as a precursor to punishment; to demand an explanation from; call to account.); yêu cầu một lời giải thích (xác đáng).

Ví dụ
If there is someone who is being mischievous (làm hại, tinh nghịch, tinh quái) for personal glory or gain- we will bring him to book.

Dilna accused her father-in-law of threatening to kill her if she didn't obey, and told her that he was close to many politicians and hence it would be hard to bring him to book.

Sumner Welles, an American diplomat who envisaged the creation of a world organisation with the military clout to bring future warmongers to book.

All the documentary evidence were provided in the complaint and besides, a lady doctor and two lady health visitors had also appeared before the inquiry officer and recorded their statements against the doctor for harassing them sexually (quấy rối tình dục). The health department sources said that an application has been submitted to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) against the accused to bring him to book.

Blessed are the peacemongers: The liberal order of the past 70 years is under threat. It was underpinned by a movement to make the waging of aggressive war illegal, and for very good reason.

"Win hands down" nghĩa là gì?

Dễ dàng thắng giải "Người chồng của năm". Photo courtesy The U.S. Army.

'Win hands down', cụm từ này xuất phát từ môn đua ngựa, nghĩa là người về đích đầu tiên cách quá xa người thứ 2, khoảng cách rất an toàn để có thể buông cả 2 tay, hands down, không cần ghì cương nữa, và vẫn thắng dễ dàng (to defeat or best someone easily or decisively).

Ví dụ
If there were a Nobel Prize for books that are sheer fun to read, Murakami would win hands down.

Bingham soon discovers that he has an unexpected ace-in-the-hole and will win hands down.

To show his appreciation and love for Michelle, Obama decided to sneakily insert himself into the conference via a large video monitor that played for the crowd (and has since been shared on their social media feed). If there was a “Best Husband of the Year” award, he’d win, hands-down.

The self-described right-leaning Swarajya has published one article after another admitting the gravity of the economic situation, cautioning that it is premature to think Modi will win hands down in 2019, lamenting the failure of demonetisation, and criticising the disastrous implementation of GST.

"Wash your dirty linen in public" nghĩa là gì?

Không hài lòng với sex life, hãy tâm sự nhiều hơn, đừng kể lung tung, "xấu chàng hổ ai". Photo courtesy darcyadelaide.

'Don't wash your dirty linen in public' = đừng giặt chiếc khăn bẩn ở chỗ đông người/nơi công cộng -> nghĩa là không nói chuyện xấu/không hay trước mặt người khác (discussing or arguing about unpleasant or private things in front of other people); 'đừng vạch áo cho người xem lưng'.

Ví dụ
A British pilot who has flown with the airline for six years said: “‘Don’t wash your dirty linen in public’ is the motto we are supposed to obey, but after the way we’ve all been treated, enough is enough.

Don’t wash your dirty linen in public, if you are dissatisfied with your sex life, discuss it with your partner in a positive and proactive manner.

Nigerian Father Paulinus Odozor, the organiser of the summit, makes the point: “You have to be prepared to wash your dirty linen in public, where everyone can see. If Africa wants to be taken seriously as a player, Africa has to be honest about itself.”

There is always a huge cost to pay if you wash your dirty linen in public. If the cost were to come in the form of class-action suits, it could turn even more expensive. A class-action suit now seems inevitable given what happened at Infosys this past week. The corridors of power in the capital are abuzz with rumours that some of the company’s American shareholders may move class-actions against Infosys on controversial governance-related issues.

"Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" nghĩa là gì?

Giờ mới bắt đầu đếm thì dễ hơn nhiều. Photo courtesy Basheer Tome.

'Count one's chickens before they hatch' = đếm gà con trước khi nở -> nghĩa là tính toán hưởng thành quả của kế hoạch/công việc gì khi nó chưa thành hiện thực (to plan how to utilize good results of something before those results have occurred); chưa đẻ đã đặt tên; tính cua trong lỗ.

Ví dụ
We're trying not to count our chickens before they hatch, but the whole point of the (gaming) legislation was about economic development, not just casinos, and it looks like that is what's happening here.

I’m kind of superstitious (mê tín). I’m not going to put my cart before the horse, or count the chickens before they hatch or anything like that, but I’m very comfortable with the team. I feel that we have yet to play the best we have ever played, and I’m hoping that we will continue to rise.

UCLA Football vs. Colorado Defensive Preview: I never want to count my chickens before they hatch, but I think we’ve got this one. We definitely have the quarterback (tiền vệ) advantage, and as bad as our defense (hàng phòng ngự) has looked, I don’t think the Buffs can make up for it on offense (tấn công). We need this win on Saturday and I think it’s ours.

"Flutter the dovecots" nghĩa là gì?

'Flutter the dovecots' có từ flutter = kích động, làm xốn xang/xao xuyến, dovecot = chuồng chim câu -> cụm từ này nghĩa là gây bối rối, gây hoang mang với cộng đồng/những người có suy nghĩ truyền thống (startle or upset a sedate or conventionally minded community); gieo nỗi kinh hoàng cho người lương thiện :)

Ví dụ
Vice President Mike Pence's revelation (tiết lộ) that he never eats alone with a woman not his wife continues to flutter the feminist dovecots. Nevertheless the veep is receiving some positive reinforcement for this policy.

Both SDR and the power of seizure of assets vested in secured creditors holding more than 75% of the outstandings by the Securitization Act 2002 flutter the dovecots of the defaulting promoters but the success of both hinge on how quickly and effectively suitors are found. It is not an easy task. BIFR has had a tough time.

The RBI may be quibbling over the return of the demonetised notes but nobody can deny that the Modi government’s operation clean money is working on the ground. It has served to flutter the dovecots of both the crooks (kẻ lừa đảo) and the smug (thiển cận mà tự mãn; kẻ khó chan hòa với mọi người). Both who smugly deposited the demonetised currency notes have ended up arming the tax sleuths to the teeth.

"Shake like a leaf" nghĩa là gì?

'Shake like a leaf' nghĩa là run bần bật, run toát mồ hôi, vì sợ (tremble greatly, especially from fear).

“I go to Birmingham and I shake like a leaf on a tree and I can’t stop, but when I come here, I have courage because I know that I have friends in you,”

It was his 21st birthday, Ground Hog Day, when an enemy rocket (tên lửa địch) struck his barracks (doanh trại). Mr. Schlegel said he was behind an outhouse when the rocket hit 3 feet from him on the other side of a line of waste drums (thùng chất thải, thùng rác). When the rocket exploded, the drums saved his life. “I thought to myself, ‘Wow what a birthday candle!’ It was a hell of a candle and a pretty disgusting (ghê tởm, kinh tởm) cake,” he joked, referring to the latrine (nhà xí) and the barrels of waste that exploded around him. The memory of that scary (kinh hoàng, rùng rợn) moment continued to plague (ám ảnh) him, but now his guitar is his coping mechanism, he said. “The first couple of episodes, you shake like a leaf, but over time you harden and get used to it,” he said. “PTSD (rối loạn stress sau sang chấn) knows no boundaries, no race, no gender, and anyone can end up with it.”
