"Trial balloon" nghĩa là gì?

Trial balloon có một từ trial nghĩa là thử nghiệm, thăm dò và từ balloon nghĩa là quả bóng. Vì thế trial balloon được dùng để chỉ một ý kiến hay một chương trình được đưa ra để thăm dò phản ứng của công chúng.
Ví dụ
“My wife and I were curious about the new houses that were recently built in our neighborhood, so we decided to see what they had to offer. We were shocked by the astronomical asking price. But a realtor friend explained that the seller might eventually come down in price because his current listing was only a trial balloon.”
“I can see how gambling could bring a lot of revenue to our state. But it could also encourage addictive behavior that ruins lives. Maybe that’s why I got a survey in the mail asking my opinion about allowing casinos here. I think it was a trial balloon. The governor is trying to figure out whether the voters support such a plan.”
