Mat nghĩa là cái thảm, cái đệm hay cái chiếu. 'Go to the mat' xuất xứ từ giới đô vật, khi hai đối thủ vật nhau xuống tấm đệm để xem người nào sẽ thắng. Vì thế, go to the mat có nghĩa là làm mọi cách để giải quyết một vấn đề khó khăn, hay để thắng đối thủ, thường là nhằm giúp một người khác yếu kém hơn mình.

Ví dụ
“When I told my supervisor that I was going to be let go (sắp bị sa thải), he marched into (xông thẳng) the president’s office to defend (bênh vực) me. Apparently, he told him that the company couldn’t afford to lose one of its most valuable employees. If he hadn’t gone to the mat (hết lòng bênh vực) for me, I wouldn’t still be here.”

“What happens to the poor and sick who need to see a doctor? Fortunately, one of my favorite charities is going to the mat for these needy (túng thiếu) people. It’s a clinic (bệnh xá) that travels across the U.S. to provide thousands with free medical services. Because of its staff of volunteer health care professionals and donated supplies (dụng cụ y khoa cùng thuốc men được tặng không), there’s a little less suffering in the country (dân chúng bớt đau khổ một chút).”
