"Make a Dent" nghĩa là gì?

Trong thành ngữ make a dent có một từ cần lưu ý là dent, có nghĩa là vết lõm. 'Make a dent' có nghĩa là thực hiện, hay làm giảm bớt một điều gì.
Ví dụ
“After being home with the flu (cảm cúm) for a week, I finally returned to the office. I can’t believe how much I missed. I’ve already spent two days trying to catch up (cố giải quyết) on the pile of paperwork on my desk, but I’ve barely made a dent in it (không làm bớt đi được bao nhiêu). There’s still a lot more I need to do.”
“There’s been an unexpected rise in robbery (trộm cướp) in my neighborhood lately. Our police department responded by assigning more officers in the area, but there hasn’t been much change yet. Will that make a dent in the crime rate (có sẽ làm giảm bớt mức độ phạm pháp hay không)? We’ll see (Chúng ta hãy chờ xem).”
