"Not Cut the Mustard" nghĩa là gì?

Trong thành ngữ này có hai từ cần lưu ý là động từ to cut và danh từ mustard. To cut có nghĩa là cắt đứt hay giảm bớt, còn mustard nghĩa là cây mù tạc. Có nhiều giả thuyết về thành ngữ này, và một giả thuyết cho rằng nó xuất xứ từ việc dùng dấm để làm giảm bớt vị cay của chất mù tạc. Vì thế, 'not cut the mustard' có nghĩa là không đủ tốt để làm một điều gì, nhất là khi bị so sánh với người hay vật khác.

“My sister’s car is a lemon (vật vô dụng). I told her she should have been suspicious of its low price. She’s had it for only six months and already it’s been in the garage twice for expensive repairs.
