"A black hole" nghĩa là gì?

'Black hole' (shared via VOA) có từ là hole nghĩa là lỗ thủng hay lỗ trống. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ ngành thiên văn học khi nói đến một vùng trong không gian có một sức hút mạnh đến nỗi bất cứ một vật gì, ngay cả ánh sáng, cũng không thể thoát ra ngoài được. Black hole ngày nay được dùng để chỉ một nơi lộn xộn, rắc rối khiến người ta không tìm được điều họ mong muốn.
Ví dụ
“I don’t ever expect to get the book back that I lent to my son. He says it’s somewhere in his bedroom. That means it’s among the countless piles of stuff scattered across his desk, furniture and floor. Whatever goes in there disappears. The place is nothing but a black hole (lỗ đen vũ trụ).”
“Not long ago, I offered what I thought was sound business advice to my aunt, but she didn’t listen. She’s opening a new restaurant and wanted to generate clients (muốn có khách hàng). So she decided to place an ad in a major newspaper here in Washington. Just doing that is rather ineffective, I told her. It’s equivalent to throwing money into a black hole (giống như vứt tiền vào khoảng trống không). She needs a much more comprehensive campaign involving lots of different media.”
