"Rock bottom" nghĩa là gì?

'Rock bottom' có một từ mới là rock, nghĩa là viên đá. Người Mỹ dùng rock bottom để chỉ mức độ thấp nhất, điểm thấp nhất. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ chỗ người ta đào đất và khi chạm phải một lớp đá thì không thể đào sâu xuống được nữa.
Ví dụ
A neighbor of mine recently died in a car accident. Soon after, his wife sank into a terrible depression (suy nhược tinh thần trầm trọng) and developed a drinking problem. She said that she knew her life had reached rock bottom (xuống dốc đến độ thấp nhất) when she didn’t want to get out of bed. In her case, it was meeting with other people who had lost loved ones that helped her get better.
After the political scandal (tai tiếng chính trị) known as Watergate erupted, the popularity (sự yêu mến của dân chúng dành cho) of President Nixon was at rock bottom (xuống tới mức thấp nhất). It was so low that he chose to resign (từ chức) from office. But it should be remembered that he’d helped advance civil rights (dân quyền) and environmental protection laws, and established diplomatic relations with China.
