"Tough break" nghĩa là gì?

'Tough break' có một từ mới là break là sự gián đoạn. Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là một hoàn cảnh khó khăn, hay một vận rủi, không may.

Ví dụ
“I was really looking forward to a promotion. It had been promised to me a year ago. I would have gotten a better job title, a raise and more vacation days. Unfortunately, my company couldn’t justify (biện minh) any such changes due to the poor economy. That was a tough break (thật là một diều không may). I can only hope my luck (vận tôi) will change once the economy improves.”

“Hurricane Katrina caused flooding that destroyed the lives of many people living near the coast of Louisiana. More recently, an oil spill (dầu lan), the largest in the history of the U.S., has struck the same residents. It’s been one tough break after another for them. Will they be able to recover from this second catastrophe (thảm họa)?”
