'Give sb the cold shoulder' (shared via VOA) có từ shoulder là cái vai. 'Cold shoulder' ở đây không phải là cái vai lạnh mà là món thịt vai của con bò hay con cừu, một món ăn không ngon mà theo phong tục từ thế kỷ thứ 19 người ta dành cho những khách nào họ không ưa thích. Vì thế thành ngữ này có nghĩa là tỏ thái độ lạnh nhạt hay coi thường người khác.

So as we refresh our screens one more time, we expend lots of useless energy searching our memories trying to recall an inadvertent slight that might have caused a friend to give us the cold shoulder.
