'Call someone on the carpet' nghĩa đen là gọi người nào tới trước tấm thảm. Do đó mới có thành ngữ 'to call someone on the carpet'.

Ví dụ
He is on the carpet for charging £300 on his expenses for a kilt jacket and the hacks have gone potty.
Even the cold lump of dough on the carpet could not damp his spirits.
Unusually, he found himself on the carpet when he went back to basics to mark NHS Week.

The timber industry (ngành công nghiệp đốn gỗ) promised not to log (cắt, đốn cây) anymore of the northwest wildernesss (vùng rừng núi hoang vu) and then removed hundreds of acres of trees! Not surprisingly, environmentalist groups called them on the carpet. Of course, they deserved to be criticized.

I feel sorry for the coach (huấn luyện viên). He’s always getting called on the carpet every time one of the players does something wrong. If the team’s owner blames (khiển trách) him again, I swear he’s going to quit (thôi việc).
