'Rule the roost' (shared via VOA) có từ roost là nơi chim cò đậu. 'To rule the roost' có nghĩa là làm bá chủ, thống trị, làm vương làm tướng. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ các nông trại, nơi mà các con gà trống quyết định cho con gà mái nào được đứng cạnh chúng để ngủ ban đêm.

Although Sherry is a very quiet (trầm lặng) and shy (e dè) secretary at the office, at home she rules the roost. She’s the boss as far as her husband and children are concerned!

During the soccer championship (giải vô địch), our team ruled the roost (làm bá chủ tất cả các đội khác). We dominated (áp đảo) our opponents (đối thủ), outscoring (giành nhiểu điểm hơn) and outplaying (chơi trội hơn) them in every game until we finally won the league trophy (cúp)!

Google 2014: Liverpool rule the roost, World Cup beats iPhone 6 and Peppa Pig tops TV: GOOGLE have revealed what the world has been searching for in 2014, with the UK wanting to know the most about Liverpool FC, the World Cup and Peppa Pig.

Ardfert rule the roost as brave Valleys repelled: With 20 minutes remaining under the peaks of the McGillycuddy Reeks, it looked like it would be a day for Valleys. An excellent free from John Cottrell, on the back of points by him and Eoin Manning, put the Cork side four points clear, 1-9 to 0-8, but Ardfert are made of tough stuff.
