"Out of proportion" nghĩa là gì?

'Out of proportion' có từ proportion là sự cân xứng/cân đối; vì thế cụm từ này nghĩa là bất cân xứng (với cái gì), hay quá lớn, quá nghiêm trọng so với cái gì.

Ví dụ
The sculpture seemed out of proportion to its surroundings.

The sentencing (bản án, lời tuyên án) is completely out of proportion with the crime (tội ác).

"Looking back at the vision over the last few days, I think it's been blown out of proportion to tell you the truth," he told the club's website.

In earlier periods, wars had an implicit calculus (sự tính toán ngầm): the benefits of victory outweighed its cost, and the weaker fought to impose such costs on the stronger as to disturb this equation. Alliances were formed to augment power, to leave no doubt about the alignment of forces, to define the casus belli (biến cố khai mào một cuộc chiến tranh, lý do gây chiến) (insofar as the removal of doubt about ultimate intentions is possible in a society of sovereign states). The penalties of military conflict were considered less than the penalties of defeat. By contrast, the nuclear age based itself on a weapon whose use would impose costs out of proportion to any conceivable benefit.

"Have many irons in the fire" nghĩa là gì?

'Have many irons in the fire' (có quá nhiều thanh sắt trong lò lửa) nghĩa là quá nhiều việc, nhiều dự án đang tiến hành. Ngày nay, với nghĩa tương tự, các em gái thường nói là "tớ có quá nhiều củ khoai nóng ở trên đùi" :)

Ví dụ
I have many irons in the fire, but am also reaching out over social media (mạng xã hội) to see what opportunities there may be.

The Yankees (đội bóng chày) seem to have many irons in the fire, especially when it comes to starting pitchers (cầu thủ ném bóng).

Loeb encourages young jazz artists to diversify as much as possible. "I tell students in clinics that they have to have many irons in the fire and wear as many different hats (đội nhiều chiếc mũ) as you can. You cannot just be a guitar player or just a composer or just a session player."

Disney meanwhile have many irons in the fire with regard its slew (số lượng lớn) of live-action remakes: Cinderella is currently raking it in (lấy cào gạt tiền vào, ở sòng bạc) at the worldwide box office ($400 million thus far) following Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland’s huge success in recent years.

* Blacksmiths work with "black" metals, especially iron. The black color comes from a layer of oxides that form on the surface of the metal during heating (called fire scale). The term "smith" originates from the word "smite", which means to hit. Thus, a blacksmith is a person who smites the black metals.

Đôi mắt thương yêu

This is a story dedicated to parents and children in the world on Father’s Day.

Eyes of father and eyes of daughter. The double-sided story of life time with cars captured from two different points of view will give you new sensation.

What is the true feeling behind those loving eyes?

"Overreach yourself" nghĩa là gì?

'Overreach yourself' nghĩa là thất bại vì làm việc quá sức mình, thất bại vì quá hăm hở (try to do more than is possible, try to be too clever, go too far, overdo it, bite off more than you can chew, be hoist with your own petard, have too many irons in the fire, defeat your own ends = have your schemes backfire or boomerang or rebound on you).

Ví dụ
Swimming in cold water is tiring so do not overreach yourself.

Clubs have got to realise when they have reached their level because if you try to overreach yourself financially then it can end in tears (kết thúc trong nước mắt).

By all means do something dramatic and decisive today but make sure you know what you are doing because the planets warn that you could easily overreach yourself. Remember, people in positions of power didn’t get there by being weak.

Not until Napoleon succumbed to the temptation to enter territories where local resources were insufficient for the support of a huge army—Spain and Russia—would he face defeat, first by overreaching himself, above all in Russia in 1812, and then as the rest of Europe united against him in a belated vindication of Westphalian principles.
