"Outside the box" nghĩa là gì?

Young Dancer Statue, Broad Street, Covent Gardens, London. Photo courtesy Martin Pettitt.

'Outside the box' = 'ngoài chiếc hộp' -> nghĩa là tư duy/suy nghĩ ngoài những cách truyền thống, thông thường (outside of or beyond what is considered usual, traditional, or conventional).

Ví dụ
Tetra Pak thinking outside the box as sustainable packaging demand grows.

Ports need to think outside the box to make their terminals more cost-effective.

Dandenong Rangers are desperate to defend home court when they host Perth Lynx on Sunday, but they may have to think outside the box to do it.

For Imo State to be salvaged from further ruin orchestrated by previous government, there is need to think outside the box and bring the basic infrastructure to make the state viable again.

"Popcorn flick" nghĩa là gì?

Pink Panther, MoMA. Photo courtesy Regan Vercruysse.

'Popcorn flick' nghĩa là phim hài nhưng ít giá trị cảm xúc hay tinh thần (a film that is entertaining to watch but is generally not of a very high quality or rich in emotional or intellectual depth; a movie that is mindless fun and has one thing (special effects, action, etc) and nothing else).

Ví dụ
Every single person working on the movie knows they're on a popcorn flick set, and each scene shows how much fun they're having.

If you have any interest in Venom as a character, the movie is worth your time, but don't come expecting anything more than a popcorn flick.

Like a good popcorn flick, it kept me entertained through the rest of its duration, even if I was a little numb to what was going on after a point.

As an actor, Stephen Dorff possesses an elusive, languorous quality that can make even a run-of-the-mill popcorn flick light up with mystery.

đổ bê-tông. Photo courtesy Gareth Williams.

'Park the bus' nghĩa là (trong bóng đá) đổ bê-tông, đặt xe buýt (2 tầng) trước khung thành (in football (soccer), to employ all (or nearly all) of a team's active players in defending its own side of the pitch).

Ví dụ
Rafa Benitez insists Newcastle can do more than park the bus.

If they decide to park the bus and we don't score early on, then it may be a boring drawn-out game.

Frank Lampard says his Derby side will not park the bus when they face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

A startup (công ty khởi nghiệp) founded in Palo Alto, California, by a trio of doctors, is trying to prove that our obsession (nỗi ám ảnh) with the technology in our pockets can help treat some of today’s most intractable (cứng đầu cứng cổ, khó bảo; khó chữa) medical problems: depression (trầm cảm), schizophrenia (tâm thần phân liệt), bipolar disorder (rối loạn cảm xúc lưỡng cực), post-traumatic stress disorder (rối loạn tâm lý hậu sang chấn), and substance abuse (lạm dụng thuốc, lạm dụng dược phẩm).

"Shoot your bolt" nghĩa là gì?

bolt. Photo courtesy Miguel Teixeira.

'Shoot (one's) bolt' nghĩa là cố gắng hết sức (tiền bạc, sức lực...) để làm việc gì (to exhaust oneself doing some task and thus struggle to complete it; to use all your money or energy in doing something); lãng phí cơ hội duy nhất để làm gì (to waste your only chance to do something).

Ví dụ

You might think she has shot her bolt before the album has even begun but actually she has just carved out her terrain.

She says she has shot her bolt, done all she can to try to persuade colleagues to soften the impact of equalisation, and failed.

It's also the most amazing race – 'the mare has shot her bolt' in the words of Peter Bromley's thrilling radio commentary, yet still she gets back up to nail the luckless Wayward Lad, who may have been just short of his best after a frost-hampered preparation.

The fact is that Usain has shot his bolt. The greatest champion of all time has stepped down: and that means that the future of the sprint races starts right there on the Gold Coast of Australia – on the B of Bang. Usain Bolt has left a legacy; he has also created a vacancy. Big-time sprinting is no longer a contest for the silver medal.

Vai trò của hệ thống hành chính quốc gia

[rất quan trọng đấy]

shared from fb Giang Le,
Trump.

cuốn sách rất hay The Fifth Risk, của Michael Lewis.

"Party card" nghĩa là gì?

ghi chú nhỏ trên tất cả các thẻ phát cho đảng viên. Photo courtesy R. Crap Mariner.

'Party card' nghĩa là thẻ đảng.

Ví dụ
It's not bad to have party card as a journalist.

It does not matter the place, cause, ethnicity of the individuals or whether they have a red or yellow party card, there will be no discretion if the law is broken.

You can see what we said that we wanted all the party card carrying members to participate in direct primaries (cuộc bầu cử để các thành viên của một đảng chọn người trong đảng mình ứng cử vào một chức vụ nào đó trong chính phủ). All of the card carrying members, all turned up today to cast their votes.

On the issue of giving former President Olusegun Obasanjo a new party membership card, we are not there yet. Former President Obasanjo said he is a statesman. And he has not indicated his desire to return to our party. I am sure if he does it today, he will be issued a party card immediately.

"Party liner" nghĩa là gì?

quyền phá thai phải được đảm bảo. Photo courtesy William Murphy.

'Party liner' có party line = đường lối của một chính đảng -> từ này nghĩa là người trung thành với đường lối của đảng (a person who follows a party line, especially the Communist Party line).

Ví dụ
In contrast to Sean Hannity and others at Fox News, libertarian Napolitano has never been a Republican party liner.

Nominating Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval to the U.S. Supreme Court could provide President Barack Obama with a way through the blockade promised from Republican senators. However, Sandoval is anything but a party-liner. Just look at his track record as Nevada governor.

Forcing women to undergo abortions (phá thai) against their will is a form of abuse. We are all agreed on that, right? Perhaps. Hillary Clinton, an ardent abortion rights party-liner, has denounced (tố cáo, tố giác, vạch mặt; lên án, phản đối kịch liệt, lăng mạ) the "forced abortions" the Chinese communist government inflicts on women.

Millions of commuters in the region’s cities have to contend with chronic (kinh niên, mạn tính; ăn sâu, bám chặt, thâm căn cố đế) gridlock (tình trạng ùn tắc giao thông/kẹt xe) every day, sparking a race to develop new ways to avoid the snarl-ups (tình trạng ùn tắc giao thông/kẹt xe).

While the developed city state of Singapore does not suffer major congestion (đông nghịt, tắc nghẽn (đường sá...); sung huyết; nghẽn mạng), it is seen as a perfect test-bed for new technologies due to its compact size and openness to innovation.

German firm Volocopter said on Tuesday it will conduct the test flights in Singapore in the second half of next year with the support of the government.

Resembling a helicopter (giống máy bay trực thăng), Volocopter’s electric air taxis take off and land vertically (cất/hạ cánh lên xuống theo chiều thẳng đứng). They are based on drone (thiết bị bay không người lái) technology and can fly two people for around 30km...

"Make my mouth water" nghĩa là gì?

gà khỏa thân. Photo courtesy Olaf Gradin.

'Make one's mouth water' nghĩa là làm thèm chảy nước dãi (to cause one to salivate or feel hungry; by extension, to cause one to feel happy or excited, usually with anticipation).

Ví dụ
A fan of the page, Kelly Samynadin, says that browsing through the posts makes her mouth water.

When Holly Arnold Kinney, the daughter of original owner Samuel P. Arnold, was a little girl, the aroma of roasting buffalo and caramelizing onion made her mouth water.

I've been a fan of chicken scarpariello for years. Apparently there are several versions of it, but the one that makes my mouth water stars chicken thighs, sausages, hot pickled cherry peppers and vinegar.

Kim Kardashian recently said she wants her “son to look like” her boyfriend Kris Humphries – but what is it about the NBA athlete that makes her mouth water? “Probably the sexiest thing about him is his personality,” she said. “And also, his deep voice.”

"Party spirit" nghĩa là gì?

Fire Breather - 'Jack in the Green' May Day Celebrations, Hastings, May 2014. Photo courtesy Vicki Burton.

'Party spirit' nghĩa là lòng ham thích mạnh mẽ (các buổi liên hoan, tiệc tùng; in the mood to enjoy a party or to have fun, a celebratory mood); và lòng trung thành (đối với một chính đảng).

Ví dụ
Bleary-eyed and full of the party spirit, these soap stars had a blast at last night's Inside Soap Awards after party.

Party spirit was very much in evidence at Iglesias’s first UK show in four years, during which time his reign as King of Latin Pop — seemingly a hereditary title, given his dad is Julio Iglesias — has come under threat as reggaeton (nhạc nhịp mạnh, điệu nhảy với nhịp mạnh phổ biến của người Tây Ấn) and its variants have entered the anglophone mainstream.

Such persons discarded party spirit and abandoned any pretence to party loyalty once they were elected. Some others saw the APC as the cover for giving their businesses unfair access to public coffers. Many have since returned to the platform that best projects that pure pursuit of self-interest.

'Party man' nghĩa là đảng viên trung thành/kiên trung (a member or adherent of a political party, especially : one characterized in cases of conflicting interests by strong loyalty to the party as an institution and to its principles and policies).

Ví dụ

My governor harbours (chứa chấp; nuôi dưỡng (ý nghĩ xấu...)) no ill-feeling (ác cảm, mối hận thù, nỗi oán hận) against the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee of the APC; he is a loyal party man.

It is true that a lot of people from the APC came to persuade (thuyết phục) him to shift camp but he wasted no time in telling them his mind, that he is a loyal party man, who will not leave the party simply because of his inability to secure the presidential ticket.

State Sen. Tony Avella has never been a party man. He’s run in primaries when his party favored someone else, and he was one of the eight lawmakers who joined the Independent Democratic Conference in the Senate. That let him secure funding for projects in Queens but also kept the Republicans in power even though they lacked a majority.

"Put words in my mouth" nghĩa là gì?

ẩn sau là dã tâm lớn của... Photo courtesy manhhai.

'Put words in someone's mouth' = to say that someone means one thing when the person really meant something else -> nghĩa là 'nhét chữ vào mồm người khác'.

Ví dụ
“I was talking about allegations (lời cáo buộc) in this political environment,” said McDaniel to media at the Pearl Town Hall meeting. “You can’t put words in my mouth.”

I’m absolutely silent for over two weeks, and they put words in my mouth that I’m part of a whisper campaign against Khashoggi. It reminds me of what took place in March 2017, when I took the actual news reporting by news outlets.

Mr Richard Grenell - the current US ambassador (đại sứ) to Germany may be a controversial choice (lựa chọn gây tranh cãi). He has caused waves in Germany by offending his hosts within hours of being sworn in, when he tweeted that German companies should immediately cease doing business with Iran. He then sparked anger by giving an interview to Breitbart, in which he said he was hoping to support nationalist (chủ nghĩa dân tộc) movements, like the "America First" of Mr Trump, throughout Europe - comments seized upon as showing support for far-Right groups in Germany. “Don’t put words in my mouth,” he tweeted in response. “The idea that I’d endorse candidates/parties is ridiculous. I stand by my comments that we are experiencing an awakening from the silent majority — those who reject the elites & their bubble. Led by Trump.”

'Party pooper' = a person who throws gloom over social enjoyment -> nghĩa là người làm cho tập thể cụt hứng (vì bản thân ủ rũ, buồn rầu) (killjoy, spoilsport, wet blanket, sourpuss, damper (on the fun)).

Ví dụ
Party-pooper Medvedev stuns Nishikori to win Japan Open.

It only takes one party pooper to completely ruin Halloween.

I hate to be a party pooper, but I've got to catch the last train.

“No ground or space based observations of Mars or its atmosphere have produced any credible evidence for active volcanism occurring in the present day or recent history,” party-pooper and planetary scientist Elliot Sefton-Nash, who works on several ESA projects including Mars Sample Return, ExoMars and Mars Express, told

The sale of fireworks to individuals should be banned, one of the UK’s most senior police officers has said. Ian Hopkins, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, yesterday called for a change in the law so pyrotechnics (buổi biểu diễn pháo hoa; thuật làm pháo hoa; sự sắc sảo, sự tỏ ra trội (trong cách ăn nói, của trí tuệ...)) are no longer used by young people to “terrorise” communities. While Mr Hopkins stressed he did not want to come across as a “party pooper”, he said the law needed to become stricter (gắt gao, chặt chẽ hơn).

...The instruments, which use hi-tech sensors to monitor the underwater environment, are connected to the Ocean Network Canada (ONC), a grid of marine observatories (đài quan sát, đài thiên văn; tháp canh, chòi canh) stretching (mạch đường) from the northeast Pacific to the Arctic... Now fully operational, they can be used to provide real-time streaming of data to the Chinese institute’s control centres in Sanya, a city on the island province of Hainan, and elsewhere.

...While there is no evidence to suggest China's military is involved with the project – there is also no suggestion the devices can be used to track submarines (tàu ngầm) or other vessels – maritime environmental data (dữ liệu môi trường biển) is equally valuable (có giá trị) to both civilian and non-civilian (phi dân sự) researchers.

The ONC is primarily a scientific research facility, but it does also have a defence contract (hợp đồng quốc phòng) to help the Canadian military monitor Arctic waters with the help of a surveillance system (hệ thống do thám) powered by artificial intelligence technology (công nghệ trí thông minh nhân tạo), state broadcaster CBC News reported last year.

...Travelers looking for the world's largest Buddha statue, however, must make the trip to the neighboring province of Henan. Opened in 2008, the Spring Temple Buddha is located in Lushan County — one of the poorest  (nghèo nhất) counties (hạt, đất (phong của) bá tước) in all of China, in which residents' average annual discretionary (tự ý quyết định tùy theo tình hình thực tế; linh hoạt, tùy nghi sử dụng) income is just 12,800 yuan. In stark contrast (tương phản rõ rệt) to the poverty of the surrounding countryside, the Spring Temple Buddha, which took 11 years to complete, stands more than 208 meters tall, is plated with 108 kilograms of gold, and cost an eye-popping 1.2 billion yuan to build.

...Those familiar with the Communist Party’s official stance on atheism  (thuyết vô thần) may find it perplexing (phức tạp, rắc rối, khó hiểu) that local governments across China would approve the construction of enormous religious idols. Yet while these statues may be aimed at the country’s religious believers, their real purpose is far more worldly: making money (kiếm tiền).

Put simply: If an area without any notable (có tiếng, trứ danh) natural scenery (cảnh đẹp tự nhiên) or historical landmarks (nét đặc trưng hay đặc điểm để nhận biết một nơi nào) wants to attract tourists (thu hút khách du lịch), it needs a gimmick (mẹo/mánh lới quảng cáo, trò bịp) — and giant Buddhas fit the bill nicely. They are also well-suited to China’s entrance fee-centric tourism industry: By the time visitors are in the gate and realize that, actually, one giant statue of the Buddha is much like the next, park authorities have already made all the money they expect to make.

Nam tài tử Châu Nhuận Phát (luôn nổi tiếng với nếp sống giản dị, tiết kiệm, khác xa với sự hào nhoáng, xa hoa của giới giải trí) -> quyên góp toàn bộ gia sản gần 17.000 tỷ đồng cho hoạt động từ thiện.

As reported by Jayne Stars, Hong Kong movie legend (huyền thoại) Chow Yun Fat will give his entire net worth of $5.6 billion HKD ($714m USD) to charity (từ thiện).

Despite his gargantuan (to lớn phi thường, khổng lồ) wealth, Fat remains rather frugal (căn cơ, tiết kiệm, thanh đạm; đạm bạc). Only spending $800 HKD ($1o2 USD) per month, Fat is often seen taking public transport and doing charity work.

He used his first Nokia phone for over 17 years, only switching to a smartphone two years ago. Fat is known for shopping at discount stores. "I don't wear clothes for other people. As long as I think it's comfortable, then it's good enough for me," he said.

Fat often spends his free time hiking and jogging, instead of splashing out.

...A Cincinnati newspaper printed a malevolent (có ác ý/ác tâm, ảnh hưởng xấu) editorial proclaiming (để lộ ra, chỉ ra; tuyên bố) that [Andrew] Jackson's mother was a common prostitute (đĩ, điếm) brought to this country by British soldiers (lính Anh). thereupon she married a mulatto (người da trắng lai da đen) man with whom she had several children, among them Andrew Jackson. Apprised of this far-fetched (khó tin, cường điệu), scandalous (khiếm nhã, đáng hổ thẹn, đáng kinh tởm; gây xôn xao dư luận, chứa đựng điều tai tiếng) tale, [John Quincy] Adams thought it absurd (vô lý, ngu xuẩn, buồn cười/lố bịch), but cynically (bất cần đạo lý, bất nhẫn) went on to comment that even if proved true it would probably not hurt Jackson. The course of the campaign seemed to substantiate (chứng minh) all Adams's apprehensions (e sợ) that fervent (nồng nhiệt, nhiệt thành) partisanship was demolishing reasonableness, a slugfest (ẩu đả kịch liệt, cãi/đánh nhau dữ dội) of calumny (lời vu khống) and lies replacing political civility. Vice was triumphing over virtue. And the cynicism expressed in his reaction to the malignant piece regarding Jackson's mother and his birth signaled that he had begun to doubt the probity (tính trung thực/liêm khiết, tính đáng tin cậy) of the republic and its citizens.

'Party girl' nghĩa là cô gái đẹp chuyên tiếp khách thuê; cô gái chỉ thích ăn chơi (a girl who will party hard anywhere, even if the party is shit she will get down and get naked; a girl who likes to fuck, usually will either swallow or let you spray it all over her. Also prone to threesomes (including bi), and taking it in the wrong 'un).

Ví dụ
The sister of a "party girl" who died after taking two ecstasy (thuốc kích thích; cực kỳ sung sướng/hạnh phúc; cảm giác mãnh liệt/tột độ; nhập định, xuất thần) pills at a music festival said she "warned her about drugs".

Madonna, 60, proved she's still a party girl at heart as she hit London celebrity hotspot Chiltern Firehouse for a night out on Thursday.

A 'party girl' who lived on Chinese takeaways and would down up to 10 pints on a single night out has stunned (choáng váng, bất tỉnh, sững sờ) her friends and family after taking part in the Go Sober for October challenge.

Four years, nine months and 25 days later, she pulled on the shirt of KSK Heist and came on at half-time to make her debut (lần  trình diễn đầu tiên, bước đầu vào đời) in the professional Belgian Super League. When she began her journey it required quite a lifestyle change. “I was about as bad as they come as a teenager,” says Coolen. “At that time I was very rebellious; in school I was skipping classes and was known as the party girl, basically because I was insecure (bất an) and trying to fit in (hòa nhập).”

... Another design feature in the app allowed users to look up and send add-friend requests to WeChat users nearby. During initial onboarding when users were just checking app's features, many would tap the "people nearby" feature, which would switch on location sharing by default – including with strangers. Once location sharing with strangers was switched on, it wasn't very intuitive to turn it off.

"Women used to get a lot of unwarranted messages from men, which was a major turn off and many of them left the platform," Gupta says. "China probably didn't have this stalking problem."

When this feedback was reported to China, the cultural nuance was missed or executives there didn't think of these features as potential challenges, he adds.

...Crime&tech’s software identifies not pizzo (protection payments) schemes as such, but firms that may be under mafioso control or involved in Mafia crimes such as illegal gambling and trafficking in people, drugs or arms. Its algorithms look at many variables. Businesses with little or no bank financing are more likely to have taken out a Mafia loan. Borrowers who struggle to repay may “convert the debt into stock” held by the Mafia creditor, often behind the smokescreen of a figurehead administrator, says Michele Riccardi of Crime&tech. The software considers the age and sex of a firm’s administrators. Those who are old, young or female are more likely to be figureheads.

It also looks for anomalies in payroll and invoice data that may reveal attempts to conceal illicit payments, especially in sectors where Mafia activity is strongest: construction, retail, waste removal, food services and transport. A high share of a firm’s wealth kept liquid is a red flag.

...In an effort to curb Mafia involvement in public contracts, Italy’s finance ministry is using the software to keep an eye on more than 10,000 bank accounts. Computer says no, mafioso.

"Foam party" nghĩa là gì?

'Foam party' nghĩa là bữa tiệc bọt xà phòng (a social event at which participants dance to music on a dance floor covered in several feet of suds or bubbles, dispensed from a foam machine); lễ hội nơi mọi người tắm trong bột xà phòng.

Ví dụ
Captain Lee’s BFF Steve Bradley, who’s coming aboard to celebrate his fiancée’s birthday and their two-year anniversary: He’s known in the Below Deck guest canon as the one with the foam party gone awry.

The infamous foam party was one of the few times chief stewardess Kate Chastain had a party fail. The clearly inebriated guest demanded everyone get into the foam party, but the foam kept blowing off the boat.

Writer and director Tim Luscombe tackled it in a production at the Salisbury Playhouse in 2011, while the Royal Exchange took a contemporary view of the tale of familial (thuộc gia đình, có quan hệ huyết thống) duty over love last season – complete with a frolicking (tính vui nhộn/hay nô đùa) foam party.

When you see that kind of cabbage bring thrown around, it makes dressing up like a drag queen, throwing the world’s worst foam party and kowtowing (khấu đầu) to insane food requests somewhat palatable. But in addition to the all-important tip, what do yachties regularly make? According to Crewfinders, an industry-based resource, base pay depends on boat size. For instance, a first officer on a 70′ to 100′ vessel might make anywhere from $48,000 to $60,000 a year.
