"In the wilderness" nghĩa là gì?

'In the wilderness' có từ wilderness là vùng hoang vu, vùng bỏ hoang, nơi vắng vẻ tiêu điều, hoang tàn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không còn ở địa vị quan trọng nữa, không còn ảnh hưởng nữa (về chính trị); mờ nhạt trên chính trường (If politicians or other well-known people spend time in the wilderness, they are not in an influential position or very active in their profession for that time).

Ví dụ
For so long he had waited in the wilderness for a recall to Test cricket.

Paine has only been appointed for this series and regained his place in the ODI side in January after nearly seven years in the wilderness.

That same discipline was on show in India’s Intercontinental Cup triumph as Halder worked himself back into the national team fold after a year in the wilderness.

Republicans are poised to be completely and utterly lost in the wilderness for a full generation if President Trump miscalculates and therefore misplays his current power gambit (thí quân để mở đường cho tướng).

defendant (bị cáo) Travis Jamaar Davis and his three co-defendants had just been convicted (kết án, tuyên bố có tội) of felony (trọng tội) murder (giết người, sát nhân) related to the 2016 death of Courtney Levar London when the courtroom fracas (cuộc ẩu đả ầm ĩ) began. Davis, the reported triggerman in London’s shooting death, punched (đấm) lawyer Daniel Hernandez repeatedly in the back of the head and soon after, his co-defendant Kelvon Grimmage joined in.

...“I got about five punches to the back and the side of my head, forehead. I got a few bumps (sưng) and bruises (thâm tím), some scratches (vết xây xát, xước, trầy da),” the attorney (luật sư) said. “I’ve been trying cases for almost 40 years, and I’d never been struck by a defendant before.”

A plane en route from Ibiza to Belfast was forced to divert when a passenger caused a blow-up on board by playing with a sex doll in front of horrified children.

The boozed-up creep, part of a stag party, was “verbally abusive” when he was refused alcohol during the flight.

A fellow passenger, who was flying with her partner and 4-month-old baby, said the man’s group was “quite rowdy” when it boarded the aircraft.

...“It’s is very clear that consuming alcohol illicitly contributed to this behavior and as part of our ‘OnBoard Together’ approach we will continue to call for action to better control the sale and consumption of tax-free goods purchased at airports,” the rep added.

Liz, 49, said she ordered spouse Mike, 53, to go when he gave her an ultimatum (tối hậu thư; mục đích cao nhất; nguyên tắc cơ bản): “It’s me or the dogs.”

The mother of one said: “I haven’t seen or heard from him since. I thought after 25 years, he should know giving up the dogs was not what my intentions (ý định) were.

“He’d got to the point where he’d had enough and wanted to slow down. But I wasn’t prepared to give it up. So he decided to go.

"Obviously that was his choice.”

...The pair met when she was 16 and left home to move in with him after finishing school. They got married in January 1991 and are parents to 22-year-old son Ollie.

Dogs had always been part of Liz’s life.

Her mother bred West Highland terriers (chó sục) and her father owned an animal food business so she was used to canine (răng nanh) company.
