"Run on empty" nghĩa là gì?

Just wanna get away from it all! Photo by JESHOOTS.COM

"Run on empty" = Chạy trống không -> Tiếp tục làm việc khi bạn đã cạn kiệt năng lượng, không còn sự nhiệt huyết hoặc nguồn lực; bất lực/không thành công hoặc không vững chắc.

Ví dụ
You will eventually run on empty. Traveling alone allows you time to recoup (bù đắp), recharge, and rekindle (thắp lại) that inner joy that has slowly dwindled (hao mòn dần).

As public coffers run on empty, civil servants (công chức) took home a staggering (dao động) Sh322.5 billion in allowances (tiền trợ cấp) last year.

The end result? I was still burnt out (cháy hết năng lượng). When you let yourself run on empty for too long, it takes a lot to fill your tank back up. My burnout impacted my business, and I thank my lucky stars I was able to bounce back. But many people don’t. Burnout can be expensive. Here’s what it can cost you.

'Play the market' = mua bán chứng khoán để kiếm lời.

Ví dụ
CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Friday that the steel cycle is making a turn and Nucor will be the best way to play the market.

Despite being the worst-performing sector this year, Sanchez also suggests the health-care sector as a safer way for investors to play the market.“You probably need to go looking for things that people absolutely must have and must spend their money on,” Sanchez said. “Health care definitely qualifies as one of those.”

In 2018, Forbes magazine announced that Japan’s next economic boom would be fueled by bitcoin and cryptocurrencies (tiền mật mã). The country has suffered from decades of economic malaise (tình trạng bất ổn), but the speculative demand for cryptocurrencies is in particularly high demand in Japan, both in industry and amongst ordinary people hoping to turn a profit and play the market. For this reason, bitcoin has also infiltrated (thâm nhập) the Japanese leisure market, with Bitcoin casinos more popular here than anywhere else in the world.

"Run interference" nghĩa là gì?

"Run interference" = Chạy tới can thiệp -> Xử lý vấn đề thay ai để giúp người đó tránh được rắc rối/phiền toái.

Ví dụ
The boss might need to run interference for you with their peer (đồng trang lứa, địa vị), and for future requests that might violate your agreed-upon priorities.

Over and again, Warren presents dubious (mơ hồ) versions of her personal story, and up to now the press has run interference for her. For example, there was that questionable anecdote (chuyện vặt) about how she was fired in from her job in 1971 at an elementary school after only one year because she was "visibly pregnant." That story is contradicted (bị bác bỏ) by contemporaneous (đương thời) school documents and news reporting, and by Warren herself when she explained the incident previously.

That’s a matter for the Foreign Relations Committee, Graham said, or for the DOJ. But that felt like a cop-out to Trumpers. Of what use is Graham as a toady if he won’t wield (nắm, thi hành) the power he holds to run interference for the president on impeachment (luận tội)? “Witch hunt” soundbites are great, but anyone can do that. Graham has a gavel. Why won’t he wield it? It’s like a golfer having a caddy who’s happy to tell him “nice drive” but who refuses to carry his bag of clubs for him.

"Run it down" nghĩa là gì?

Ba kể con nghe... Photo by  Anna Pritchard

"Run it down (to one)" -> (thông tục) Kể/giải thích toàn bộ sự thật với ai.

Ví dụ
As the years progressed, she pressured her mother to run it down to her. The mother told her she had a relationship with her father in 1972 while he worked at a café in town. After she fell pregnant, he wanted nothing to do with her. He also contested paternity (không thừa nhận trách nhiệm làm cha).

If you really, really wanna make the money-money, you’ve got to stay on top of your business, and that’s the part I hate to have to focus on because it gets in the way of focusing on creating new music, but you have to do it. I had to set aside a good hour or two with my manager and hear him run it down to me, and then I’m good at asking questions. If I don’t get it, I definitely will push it till I do understand it.

Every artist is different so no two artists are the same. Tye Tribbett wanted to do his thing this way, Fred Hammond wanted to do his thing this way, John P. Kee wanted to do his thing this way. Charlie Wilson wanted to come in here and we had to run it down to him and explain it to him and make him understand it and do the thing for him and then when he finally killed it, it’s like, ‘Charlie, you killed it!’… ‘you did that!’… I work with Charlie, so me and him have that relationship where I can go hard on him because he go hard on me. But some of the artists I had to get out of the way and let the gospel (Phúc âm) producers and all of them work with them and then I would come in there (studio) afterwards and listen … because some things was meant for me to get out the way.

Dare or not?  Photo by Ronaldo de Oliveira

"Run into a brick wall" = Lao vào bức tường gạch -> Chống lại sự khó khăn/thách thức bất di bất dịch và không thể vượt qua được.

Ví dụ
“We run into a brick wall all the time. Because of their home rule charter (hiến chương), we are limited on what we as legislators (người lập pháp) can do with the county.”.

Taken together with the bitter feuds (mối hận thù cay đắng) between some of the EAC members, and recent data showing that intra-Africa trade has flatlined, although its trade with other regions in Africa has increased, it gives the impression that the East African integration (hội nhập) project has run into a brick wall.

Brian Abraham, Justice’s general counsel and chairman of the SBA board, stressed the mid-fiscal-year (giữa năm công khố, tài chính) cut isn’t guaranteed to happen. “Those scenarios (kịch bản) are still being played out, so all there is now is planning — and prudent (thận trọng) planning,” he said. “You don’t just go on gleefully (vui sướng, hân hoan) unaware and run into a brick wall.”

Pence told me Mattis still argued we were making military progress (tiến triển quân sự) in Afghanistan and should not change course. Pence knew as well as I that Trump didn’t believe that, and there was substantial evidence Mattis was wrong. Here, once again, it wasn’t so much that I disagreed with Mattis substantively as it was frustrating that he was determined to run into the wall on Afghanistan (as on Syria), and that he had no alternative line of argument to avoid getting the “wrong” answer.

Tình bạn trong sáng. Photo by Yolanda Sun

"Run down some lines" -> Chạy xuống vài đường -> Nói chuyện với ai; cố gắng quyến rũ/dụ dỗ ai qua việc nói chuyện.

Ví dụ
We are exposed to his dark side when we see him regularly run down some lines with the love of his life, who has been dead for over 12 years.

Soon after, Edmilson began to read Karine's posts and like all of her pictures. On Jan. 28, 2018, the couple started to run down some lines each other.

“A lot of people like it because it’s more of a one-on-one experience. You can take time and actually look at the merchandise (hàng hóa) and run down some lines with the people who made it, and ask them questions because we do have a lot of handcrafters (người làm thủ công) here,” says organizer Celia Case.

"Run counter to" nghĩa là gì?

Cái ngông cuồng của tuổi trẻ. Photo by Thom Holmes

"Run counter to (someone or something)" = Chạy ngược hướng với ai -> Chống đối, làm trái với ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Pompeo’s comments are worth considering in the context of whistleblowers (nhân viên kiểm soát) and impeachment (luận tội) proceedings, primarily because they run counter to good practices for both government and business.

Steve Cramer, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council, said the city’s inclusionary (bao gồm) zoning plan is “going to run counter to the idea of affordability (tính kinh tế, có đủ điều kiện).” He also said while development will continue in Minneapolis, companies may focus more on existing buildings instead of creating new ones. While the city plans to decrease the number of required affordable units, he said it’s still not enough.

While many welcome the proposed national HIV initiative, those on the frontlines (tiền tuyến) of the response point out that some of the Trump administration’s efforts run counter to ending the epidemic (bệnh dịch), such as supporting policies that allow discrimination (sự phân biệt) based on sexual orientation (xu hướng tình dục) and rolling back expansion of Medicaid, which is the largest source of insurance coverage (việc đưa tin) for people with HIV. Despite the need, Georgia has not adopted expanding Medicaid.

"Run before you can walk" nghĩa là gì?

Chạy trong bão tuyết. Photo by  Isaac Wendland

"Run before you can walk" = Chạy trước khi bạn có thể đi bộ -> Cố gắng làm điều khó trước khi bạn có thể làm thành công những điều dễ dàng.

Ví dụ
Once you feel comfortable and you’ve made bread enough times, then you can try something like sourdough (bột nhào chua). You don’t want to run before you can walk. Start with more easy, basic breads. Focaccia can be an easy bread to make depending on the recipe (công thức chế biến).

The first thing is to make sure you don’t try to go too fast or too far – don’t run before you can walk. If you plan a ride that’s of a shorter distance but you still feel quite fresh after that ride, you can always add an extra bit on. If you go too far, you run the risk of getting stranded.

“We used the Five Deeps Expedition as what the navy calls the ‘shakedown cruise’ (sự chạy thử máy; chuyến thử nghiệm cuối cùng) to figure out all the things we need to fix”, Vescovo says. This meant that the mettle (sự thúc đẩy hết mình) of most of the equipment on board was tested during the expedition itself. “Believe it or not one of my favourite quotes comes from Iron Man when he said ‘sometimes you have to run before you can walk’”, Vescovo says. It was a mantra (câu thần chú) that led the entire expedition (cuộc viễn chinh, thám hiểm).

"Run around like a blue-arsed fly" nghĩa là gì?

Không biết có phải con ruồi này không? Photo by Philip Veater

"Run around like a blue-arsed fly" = Bay/chạy loanh quanh như một con ruồi đ*t xanh -> Làm rất nhiều việc/hoạt động cùng một lúc, làm nhiều việc một cách rất nhanh để còn làm mớ việc khác nữa.

Ví dụ
“They can do what they want. I’m still going to run around like a blue arsed fly trying to put the ball in the back of the net. That’s my job.

"I used to have to go into shops when I was young and speak to people much older and more experienced than I was to try and sell them watches. "I used to run around like a blue-arsed fly trying to sell as many as I could because I was paid on commission (thi hành nhiệm vụ, phận sự)."

Park built a solid reputation (danh tiếng vững chắc) at Manchester United as being Fergie’s go-to guy when he needed someone to just run around like a blue-arsed fly. Sadly, that’s not enough when you’re playing in a struggling team that can’t string more than a few passes together. Hence, floppage.

"Accident of birth" nghĩa là gì?

sinh ra biết bố là chủ tịch :) Photo by: Alex Hockett on Unsplash

So, as you enjoy the camaraderie (tình bạn) of loved ones, and the privilege (ân huệ) of having enough, a condition that has been freely given as an accident of birth, consider what it would mean to stop the cycle of mindless consuming in exchange for there being enough for everyone.

Some organize to protest (phản đối) discrimination (phản đối) and to make society more just and inclusive. On the other hand, those who through the accident of birth feel themselves to have greater social worth may lose sight of the privilege they were granted through no effort of their own.

From the age of 12, I began journaling for friendship and comfort. I wrote about being a sensitive (nhạy cảm) girl who struggled to make herself visible, with a quiet temperament (tính khí) and accident of birth order.

"Run around after (someone or something)" = Chạy theo, đuổi theo ai/cái gì để có được cái mình muốn.

Ví dụ
"If he didn’t go and buy it and cook it, he wasn’t eating, whereas mum would run around after him and he’d let her. He came back a different person.”

She’s happier than she’s ever been, she has the energy to run around after her kids, loves clothes shopping because she knows that she will find items that fit and can finally say that she loves herself.

Guest is ever on the hunt and gets regular alerts (cảnh báo) for potential auction (đấu giá) items, including one he has just received about a favourite work. "It's a big one," he says excitedly; then frowns gently. "And people run around after a Ned Kelly helmet, can you believe it?"

"Run an errand" nghĩa là gì?

Tuổi nhỏ làm việc nhỏ, tùy theo sức của mình. Photo by Noah Silliman

"Run/do/go (on) an errand" = Chạy việc vặt -> Chạy đâu đó, quanh quẩn để làm mấy việc lặt vặt.

Ví dụ
The only time you see each of the parents interacting with the children is when either of them wants the child to run an errand.

On Saturday morning, I spoke to a relative in Tehran who was trying to beat the city's notorious (xấu, tai tiếng) traffic, looking for the best route to run an errand.

When the mother of the baby had to run an errand, the father came up with a genius invention (sự phát minh, sáng chế thông minh) to get the baby to feed.

Would you run an errand for just two bucks? How about $3? Maybe $4? These are the questions many delivery workers for the courier service (dịch vụ thông tin) DoorDash say they now face after the company instituted a new pay model paying out as little as $2 per job—a system that was meant to replace its previous, predatory (trấn lột) wage model. And thanks to upcoming changes to the company’s reward program, frequently working for scraps (ẩu đả, cãi cọ) may be some dashers’ (người phô trương) only option.

"Corner the market on" nghĩa là gì?

Nhanh lên cửa hàng bên cũng đang giảm Black Friday đấy Photo by Borko Manigoda from Pexels

'Corner the market on something' = mua hết hàng từng ngõ ngách ngoài thị trường -> đầu cơ tích trữ, mua hết hàng nhằm mục đích xấu hoặc lũng loạn thị trường.

Ví dụ
As major retailers (người bán lẻ) corner the market on Black Friday, many small local businesses put a lot of stock into people coming out for Small Business Saturday.

Malicious bots (mạng lưới/phần mềm gây hại) account for nearly 18% of traffic to online retail sites, according to a recent Imperva study. Not only do these automated programs capture competitive data, they can slow down ecommerce sites and corner the market on limited-availability inventory (hàng hóa tồn kho), leading to frustrated customers and lost sales.

Apart from ads on YouTube, I think Google is trying to corner the market on ads in video games, too. They already have the infrastructure and experience needed to create the client-side ad platform. Now, they need users. They need to prove they can get the eyeballs. Just like Google’s search engine came before Google AdWords, so must Google Stadia come before in-game ads.

"Run amok" nghĩa là gì?

Tuổi thơ ngây dại. Photo by  ORHAN KAYA

"Run amok" = Chạy như một người điên, chạy cuồng lên; lồng lên như một kẻ khát máu; không kiểm soát hành vi và bản thân được.

Ví dụ
Delegate Gary Howell, however, isn’t happy with that option. The Republican official issued a press release calling FFRF’s claims “snowflake political correctness run amok.”

The Shiv Sena on Thursday targeted the Modi government over Delhi police's "inhuman" (vô nhân đạo) lathicharge (nhóm cảnh sát cầm gậy đế chống cuộc biểu tình) on JNU students, including those challenged visually, during a protest against hostel fee hike, saying no government should run amok in this manner.

Black Friday isn’t just an American tradition anymore. Retailers (người bán lẻ) in other countries have embraced it in recent years with such force that it’s prompting a backlash from some activists, politicians and even consumers (người tiêu dùng). Critics see it as a symbol of capitalism run amok. Climate activists are holding “Block Friday” protests at shops around Paris, sparking some heated exchanges with shoppers hoping to find a good deal.

"Run a risk" nghĩa là tự dẫn thân đến với sự nguy hiểm và dẫn đến kết cục rất xấu/kết quả thất bại.

Ví dụ
Promoting global initiatives always run a risk of masking enormous differences (sự khác biệt lớn) in human resources and ignoring diversity (sự đa dạng) of human desires.

Having a fluid dialogue — a back and forth — is important, because majority investors run a risk if they’re telling the CEO, who has been running the company for some time, how he or she is supposed to operate.

Average citizens may wish to be cautious and comply (tuân theo, đồng ý với) with police, it said; if they don’t, they run a risk that they could be charged with willfully obstructing (gây trở ngại) an officer. But “a well-informed person does not commit a civil fault merely by refusing to comply with an order that proves to be unlawful,” Justice Côté wrote. “A person whose rights are infringed (vi phạm) must be able to respond — within reason, of course — without being held civilly liable (trách nhiệm về mặt pháp lý).”

"Run a make on" nghĩa là gì?

"Run a make on (someone or something)" = Nhận dạng, xác nhận hoặc kiểm tra danh tính ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
They took the time to run a make on his plate;. found a long list of victims he cooked and ate. But Miss Piggy is in love, has stars in her eyes;.

I think an ex-convict (tù nhân, kết án cũ) has got a real good chance. I probably oughta run! At least all of my past is aboveboard (không che đậy, không giấu giếm), and they won't have to spend a lot of money to run a make on me! I think Obama will probably win the next race.

The main reason to do background checks is to avoid hiring or going into business with people who may be untrustworthy (không đáng tin) and harbor ulterior motives (lý do không nói ra, kín đáo). On TV or in movies, a private investigator is often told to “run a make” on someone – well, it’s not that easy.

"Run a brush through my hair" nghĩa là gì?

Qủa đầu chất như này cần gì chải nhỉ? Photo by Park Street

"Run a brush through (one's) hair" = Lướt nhanh cái lược qua tóc -> Chỉ việc chải tóc một cách vội vã và không chỉn chu/gọn gàng.

Ví dụ
I wear a lot of yoga pants and sweats, and there are days I've barely run a brush through my hair. Sometimes, those are my best writing days.

10:45 a.m. — I hit send on a draft (nháp, mẫu) report that was on my plate this morning, quickly run a brush through my hair, and throw on a turtleneck (áo cổ rùa) for a video meeting (yes, I stay in my comfy PJ pants, and all your other remote colleagues do too). I scrape (cạo) the last few spoonfuls of yogurt out of the bottom of the container and read over my notes in preparation for the call.

You can still see some waves, and Hermione could stand to run a brush through her hair, but in the adaptation (sự thích nghi) of Book 5, Emma Watson's pulling off the semi-sloppy (hơi luộm thuộm) I'm-too-smart-and-busy-to-deal-with-my-hair-right-now hair style. It works for the character. And in her defense, Hermione's plate was pretty full by this point in the story. She gets her hair situation together in Half-Blood-Prince...

"Nurse you back to health" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ali Yahya on Unsplash

"Nurse (someone/something) back to health" nghĩa là chăm sóc ai đó bị ốm đến khi họ hồi phục sức khỏe.

Ví dụ
Do not prepare a diet chart of your own. If your sinus (xoang) condition is serious, check with your doctor at the earliest. They may prescribe medicines, which, when taken with a healthy diet, may nurse you back to health.

Bellino continued, “Drew worked all day and is now preparing for a 24 mile hike up a mountain at 3am with two buddies. I’m so proud of you babesy. I can’t wait to see you in a few hours and hold you all night after your incredible journey. And don’t worry, I’ll nurse you back to health. I love you Drew Bohn.”

In addition to eating way too much this Thanksgiving, some of us might have WAY too much to drink. In fact, some of you might end up nursing an early hangover (vết tích, dư vị khó chịu do dùng thức uống có nồng độ cao) thanks to some intense bar-hopping the night before Thanksgiving. To help make your potential hangover a little less painful this Thanksgiving, here are four hangover tips to help nurse you back to health.

"Run (something) past (one)" = Chạy để truyền cái gì cho ai -> Tình cờ/ngẫu nhiên giải thích, thông báo điều gì cho ai.

Ví dụ
"This is how I think you should do it, but if you guys come up with a better way, as long as you run it past me, then let's do it your way.'”.

I pleaded (bào chữa) my case that if she comes across any of my stuff that she is 50/50 on, just know that I'm 90/10 and she should run it past me.

Confidence about her work has never been a problem. She wears her great talent and success lightly, but below her well-mannered modesty (khiêm tốn) is a rock-solid belief in herself. She is the best judge of her writing and doesn't feel the need to run an idea past her editor. "I really trust my own instincts (bản năng)," she explains. "It's the only thing I think I'm good at."

"On the back of an envelope" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by erica steeves on Unsplash

There’s a chilling (kinh khủng) calculation that’s simple enough to solve on the back of an envelope: How many children’s lives will Kevin Esvelt personally be responsible for if he makes one mistake on the job?

"But these drawings really are preliminary (sơ bộ), like drawings on the back of an envelope. All they do is represent our current thinking. They give us an idea of what this might look like so we can get a good handle on the cost and share what we are thinking."

At the risk of being overly brutal, one is tempted to observe that it might as well all be written on the back of an envelope, or even one of Nigel’s old fag packets (gói thuốc lá), so sketchy (sơ sài, sơ lược) are the contents and so obviously are they dominated by him and him alone.

Ví dụ
“Yeah listen, she can run her mouth. I don't really want to talk about her cause she's so irrelevant. I've called to fight her for the past two and half years.

"You run your mouth in your little column and stuff like some sanctimonious (tỏ ra cao đạo, mộ đạo) troll," he said. "You've never been fair or even-handed with us, so I really don’t care what you think."

'Because you want to run your mouth,' he responds. After one of the men tells Jones he didn't have the right to run the vehicle's license (bằng lái xe) plates, Jones shouts: 'I got my rights to do anything I want to do, I'm a police officer.'
