Ai mua "khi khống" không?

nhật hoàng akihito thoái vị, chấm dứt triều đại heisei -> một công ty ở nhật bản bán "không khí thời bình thành" đóng hộp, giá 1.080 yen
-----

With just days until Japan ushers in (báo hiệu, mở ra) a new era (triều đại mới) with the crowning (đội mũ miện) of a new emperor (hoàng đế mới), one entrepreneurial (mang tinh thần khởi nghiệp) company is cashing in  (lợi dụng, kiếm lợi từ) by selling cans containing "the air of the outgoing era" - a breeze at US$10.

The can filled with "the air of Heisei" - the 30-year reign of current Emperor Akihito - hit the shelves on Monday at the ambitious (tham vọng) price of 1,080 yen (US$9.60), with producers hoping to sell as many as 1,000 units.

"Air is free of charge but we hope people will enjoy breathing the fresh air of Heisei after the new era comes, or just keep it as a momento (vật kỷ niệm)," company president Minoru Inamoto told AFP.

The cans have been produced in the central Japanese village of Henari, which is written using the same characters as those used for "Heisei", he said, adding that the cans can be snapped up at a roadside station in the village and online.

They contain nothing but "the air of the current era" and a five-yen coin, often considered a lucky charm :D

-----

First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade (lưỡi dao) with animal blood (máu động vật) and allows it to freeze (đóng băng, đông lạnh). He then adds layer after layer of blood until the blade is completely concealed (che giấu hoàn toàn) by the frozen blood.

Next, the hunter (người đi săn) fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive (thính) nose to the source of the scent (mùi hơi (của thú vật)) and discovers the bait (mồi nhử, cám dỗ), he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood. He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously (sôi nổi, mãnh liệt; hùng hồn, đầy khí lực), lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare (trần (không được che phủ). Feverishly (luýnh quýnh, luống cuống, hối hả) now, harder and harder, the wolf licks the blade in the cold Arctic night. His craving for blood becomes so great that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue (lưỡi). Nor does he recognize the instant when his insatiable (không thể thỏa mãn được, tham lam vô độ) thirst (cơn khát) is being satisfied by his own warm blood. His carnivorous (ăn thịt) appetite continues to crave more until in the morning light, the wolf is found dead in the snow!

Many begin using drugs, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or engaging in unsafe sexual behavior for the same reasons that the wolf begins licking the knife blade. It seems safe and delicious at first, but it doesn’t satisfy. More and more is desired, leading to a crisis or death.

Don’t be fooled by the temptations of sin. Like the wolf, we can get away with it for a while. Eventually, however, its true character is revealed. Sin leads to death and destruction. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord".

The North Korean leader's ability to procure (kiếm, mua được; tìm (đàn bà, con gái) để cho làm đĩ; dắt gái, làm ma-cô) million-dollar luxury cars is a good example of how porous (rỗ, thủng tổ ong) international sanctions (biện pháp trừng phạt, chế tài) can be.

...Kim has raised eyebrows by using Daimler-branded stretch limousines at several very high-profile summits (hội nghị thượng đỉnh), including his meeting this week with Russian President Vladimir Putin and both of his earlier summits with President Donald Trump.

The sale of luxury goods, including limousines, is banned under U.N. sanctions intended to put pressure (gây sức ép) on North Korea to abandon (từ bỏ) its nuclear weapons (vũ khí hạt nhân).

..."We have absolutely no idea how those vehicles were delivered to North Korea," Daimler spokeswoman Silke Mockert said. "For Daimler, the correct export of products in conformance with the law is a fundamental principle of responsible entrepreneurial activity."

"Set a high bar" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Christopher Windus on Unsplash.

'Set a high bar' nghĩa là đặt ra tiêu chuẩn chất lượng cao (theo mong muốn, theo kỳ vọng riêng); 'nâng giá gạo'.

Ví dụ
JPMorgan Chase Just Set a High Bar for This Earnings Season: The financial giant (người khổng lồ tài chính) beat its top- and bottom-line expectations (kỳ vọng), and posted great numbers across its businesses.

Burgum proposed nine “legacy projects” (dự án mang tính di sản) in his budget blueprint (bản kế hoạch ngân sách) using $300 million in Legacy Fund earnings. He pointed to two of those concepts (ý tưởng) — a Theodore Roosevelt presidential library (thư viện tổng thống) and a statewide network for unmanned aircraft systems (mạng lưới hệ thống máy bay không người lái toàn bang) — as having “set a high bar."

Mom assumed that all mutual fund managers, being well-educated, experienced, and highly-paid professionals, were better qualified to manage money than my dad. She did not expect it to be hard to find managers who would set a high bar for my dad. But this assumption turned out to be wrong.

"Amazon has certainly set a high bar for the online experience (trải nghiệm khách hàng trên mạng), but we are seeing companies like Walmart, Kroger and several others make significant investments (khoản đầu tư đáng kể) in their online and delivery offerings. Although Amazon shows no signs of slowing down, it is safe to say they will have their work cut out for them," Krug says.

...What's different about religion is that people don't feel they need to have any particular expertise to have opinions about it. All they need is strongly held beliefs, and anyone can have those. No thread about Javascript will grow as fast as one about religion, because people feel they have to be over some threshold of expertise to post comments about that. But on religion everyone's an expert.

Then it struck me: this is the problem with politics too. Politics, like religion, is a topic where there's no threshold of expertise for expressing an opinion. All you need is strong convictions.

...The most intriguing thing about this theory, if it's right, is that it explains not merely which kinds of discussions to avoid, but how to have better ideas. If people can't think clearly about anything that has become part of their identity, then all other things being equal, the best plan is to let as few things into your identity as possible.

TITUSS BURGESS doesn’t like to travel and says he knows “zero” about South Africa, which would seem to make him an unlikely host for a 10-day tour of that nation, especially one that costs nearly $27,000 a head. But on a chill March night, the actor, best known for his role as Titus Andromedon on the Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” patiently posed for selfies with travel journalists at a Manhattan wine bar to kick off Heritage Tours’ new Spotlight Series of trips. The company describes the tours as “immersive small-group experiences enhanced by the presence of expert personalities and influencers.”

…While Mr. MacMillan says that the hosts for his trips were chosen for their connection to the destinations, the link can seem tenuous (có ít thực chất, ít ý nghĩa, rất mong manh, hời hợt). Courtney Reed, who played Princess Jasmine in Disney ’s “Aladdin” on Broadway will be hosting a trip to Spain focused on wine, fashion and food. She’s never been to Spain, but is “extra thrilled” about going. “I think my role is just to provide social ambience,” she said. “I’m a very easygoing person and I can create extra flair just having fun and appreciating our surroundings. I’m like a cheerleader….We’re going to have a blast!”

…Other travel companies are hitching their wagons to stars who don’t merely gild the travel experience, but add bona fide (không lừa dối, không gian dối, ngay tình) knowledge or expertise. “There’s only so much caviar and champagne you can give passengers, so we like to enrich their experience in an intelligent way,” said Barbara Muckermann, chief marketing officer of Silversea Cruises. The cruise line, which has at least one expert lecturer on each of its ships, invited nine artists, writers and other creative types including authors Paul Theroux, Pico Iyer and Saroo Brierley to make appearances during its 133-day World Cruise 2019. Besides giving lectures, each is contributing to a commemorative (để kỷ niệm, để tưởng niệm) anthology (hợp tuyển) that Silversea line is creating for the passengers.

Potholes (ổ gà) have been filled in days after penis (dương vật) graffiti was painted around them.

The phallic (dương vật, lúc cương cứng) symbols (biểu tượng) were sprayed (xịt) around a number of potholes on roads in Middlesbrough earlier this week.

Middlesbrough Council said a road-mending team that was already in the Acklam area acted to fix the phallus-adorned potholes once it was made aware of them.

Resident Brad Nicholson said the potholes had been there for more than a year, adding: "The power of the willy."
