"Put lipstick on a pig" nghĩa là gì?

"Put lipstick on a pig" = nôm na nghĩa là có thoa son đánh phấn hay trang điểm cho một con heo thì nó vẫn là con heo, không thể nào 'hấp dẫn' hơn được; hành động tạo ra những thay đổi phù phiếm/hời hợt để cái gì trở nên hấp dẫn hơn/thuyết phục hơn.

Ví dụ
The only things the new manager has come up with to save the restaurant have been to put lipstick on a pig, but slapping on a fresh coat of paint and making a few repairs (sửa) will do nothing to address the underlying problems (các vấn đề tiềm ẩn).

“It’s better to shine a light on the problem, bring it to light (đưa ra ánh sáng), and fix the problem once and for all (một lần và mãi mãi), than to just put lipstick on a pig and say, ‘We need to move on and be positive,’ ” she said. “We can still be positive and say we’re fixing this — and it will get fixed.”

While the Liberal Party (Đảng Tự do) continues to put lipstick on a pig, nothing has been done to change the structure of politics (cơ cấu chính trị) to encourage a greater range of women to participate. And when women do enter politics, there is very little opportunity (cơ hội) for those women to exercise their agency (cơ quan, sở) in representing (đại diện) the constituents (cử tri) who voted for them in the first place, lest (sợ rằng) they be “ungrateful” (vô ơn).

"Have your cake and eat it" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash.

Miley Cyrus is proving (chứng minh) that you cannot, in fact, have your cake and eat it too. The She Is Coming artist has had her fair share of scandals (thị phi), but recently the 26-year-old songwriter (nhạc sĩ) found herself in hot water over…a cake.

He wants to switch (chuyển đổi) to a market economy (kinh tế thị trường) in a way which does not reduce people's standard of living (chất lượng cuộc sống). But he can't have his cake and eat it. You can't be married to one woman and have a close relationship with another woman at the same time. That's having your cake and eating it.

Over the past several years, there has been much disagreement about raising property taxes (thuế tài sản) to finance (hỗ trợ tài chính) the construction of schools in Lakeland. The compromise (thỏa thuận) purports (ý muốn) to allow the citizenry (công dân) to have “its cake and eat it too” so long as citizens are willing to tacitly (ngầm, ngụ ý) agree to sleep on their rights that the First Amendment (Tu Chính án thứ nhất) protects, such as the right to petition (kiến nghị) and the right to free speech (tự do ngôn luận).

shared from fb Anh Pham,
-----
(nguyên gốc đoạn văn của) Lee Hsien Loong

Wrote to Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-Cha to express my condolences on the passing of former Thai PM and President of the Privy Council, General Prem Tinsulanonda.

A capable and immensely respected leader, General Prem served Thailand with great distinction. As PM, he steered Thailand through a period of democratic development. Later he was appointed to the Privy Council, and was a trusted source of advice and counsel to the late King Bhumibol, and successive military and civilian governments.

His leadership also benefited the region. His time as PM coincided with the ASEAN members (then five of us) coming together to oppose Vietnam’s invasion of Cambodia and the Cambodian government that replaced the Khmer Rouge. Thailand was on the frontline, facing Vietnamese forces across its border with Cambodia. General Prem was resolute in not accepting this fait accompli, and worked with ASEAN partners to oppose the Vietnamese occupation in international forums. This prevented the military invasion and regime change from being legitimised. It protected the security of other Southeast Asia countries, and decisively shaped the course of the region.

General Prem was a good friend of Singapore. Mr Lee Kuan Yew worked closely with him and had deep respect for him as a statesman. He strengthened relations between Singapore and Thailand, forming a strong and enduring partnership.

I met General Prem several times. When I called on him in Bangkok in 1999 and 2000, he was gracious with his hospitality and counsel.

General Prem will be greatly missed by the people of Thailand and all who knew him. – LHL

"Have a heart of glass" nghĩa là gì?

Trẻ con là bậc thầy về bộc lộ cảm xúc Photo by Jordan Whitt on Unsplash
'Have a heart of glass' = có trái tim như thủy tinh mong manh, dễ vỡ -> chỉ một người có cảm xúc mong manh, nhạy cảm, dễ bị người khác tác động.

Ví dụ
We later learn Midas' father had a heart of glass. Every time he felt affection (cảm mến), he felt a piercing pain (nỗi đau nhói lòng), like a shard (mảnh vỡ) of glass, but it turned out that his heart was actually turning to glass.

Chris - Quite a lazy and dull (buồn tẻ) offering from the successful song writing duo of Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg. Cherise has a good voice but shaky (run run, run rẩy) intonation (âm điệu) and her blank expression (biểu hiện vô hồn) makes her look like she actually does have a heart of glass.

Just like an insect (côn trùng), Aquarius (cung Bảo Bình) may sometimes seem to lack a heart, but that isn't true. The reality is that all Aquarians have a heart of glass that's easily shattered (tan vỡ). They value (coi trọng) everyone, and when they feel betrayed (phản bội), they'll pick up a glass splinter (mảnh vỡ, mảnh vụn, mảnh dăm bào) from their broken heart and use it on anyone who hurt them.

"Too clever by half" nghĩa là gì?

nữ nhà văn khiêm tốn... Photo by Andrew Neel on Unsplash.

'Too clever by half' nghĩa là có thái độ tự hào (huyên hoang) về trí thông minh, kỹ năng của bản thân (tới mức vượt quá sức mình, hoặc lừa dối người khác; arrogant, proud, conceited...)

Ví dụ
I always read Patrick Murphy’s column. He is a very clever writer but in some instances, he may be ‘too clever by half’ which could be the occupational hazard (rủi ro nghề nghiệp) of clever writers.

Mr Hubler’s mistake stemmed from being too clever by half. Like several traders (thương nhân, thương gia) at the time, he predicted trouble ahead for the US housing market and placed derivative (phái sinh) bets on the default (không trả được nợ, vi ước) of the riskiest types of subprime mortgage bonds (trái phiếu thế chấp vay mua nhà dưới chuẩn).

The tactic (cách, chước, thủ đoạn, mưu kế) of sticking by Labour while forcing it to change is too clever by half. Remainers are meant to put pressure on the Labour leadership by voting for Remain parties and then about turn and back Labour in a general election (bầu cử phổ thông). They may do, but as everyone says, once trust is lost it is hard to rebuild it, especially when the centre-left has seen through Corbyn.

The Ottoman empire began in the late thirteenth century when the Osmanlis, a Turkish clan or tribe, somehow penetrated (xâm nhập) into northwest Anatolia, far from the plains (đồng bằng) and pastures (đồng cỏ, bãi cỏ) of their ancestral home, very close to the center of Byzantine (Greek) power. This warrior people was swift to move and keen for loot—very dangerous. The Greeks should have known it and seen them as potential, inevitable enemies. Instead, these pseudo-Hellenes, too clever by half, thought they could turn the Ottomans into tools and allies.
