"Dressed to kill" nghĩa là gì?

Photo courtesy: SRINGAAR
"Dressed to kill" hoặc "dressed (up) fit to kill" = ăn diện. Nếu nói ai đó (đặc biệt là phụ nữ) "dressed to kill" nghĩa là họ ăn mặc rất thời trang, biết cách thu hút, hấp dẫn mọi người.

Ví dụ
Khloe Kardashian was dressed to kill on Wednesday as she met with pal (bạn thân) Scott Disick to film Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Aamrapali is dressed to kill in the picture. She accentuated (làm nổi bật) her yellow lehenga (một loại váy áo truyền thống ở Ấn Độ) with a nose pin, matching bangles, earrings and a mangalsutra (một loại dây chuyền vàng).

I once interviewed David Cameron and took a fair amount of abuse (lạm dụng) when a photo emerged of the pair of us, him dressed to kill, me in a tatty (rách rưới, xấu xí) v-neck and a rumpled (bị nhàu) pair of grey chinos.

The 22-year-old brunette (da nâu) beauty was dressed to kill for the event in a red-and-black, backless dress (váy hở lưng) that reflected the Spider-Man colors. The dress was decorated with tiny sequins while cutouts down the sides revealed her trim abdomen (bụng).

Village police swarmed (tập trung) a gas station recently and used a Taser (một kiểu súng chích điện cầm tay) to stop a naked (trần truồng) 36-year-old man who danced in the parking lot before he tried to drive away as onlookers (người chứng kiến) captured video of the strange scene.

Officers responded after an employee there reported someone acting erratically (thất thường).

The man then tried to drive away, but two police cars boxed (chặn lại) his car in at the parking lot's Mamaroneck Avenue exit, where several officers surrounded the man's car. An officer opened the driver's side door and the man got out. Officers used a Taser on the man after he refused to comply with officers’ verbal commands (mệnh lệnh)

The man was charged (cáo buộc) with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and public lewdness (khiêu dâm), both misdemeanors (tội nhẹ), and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation (vi phạm),

The building manager, Charles Kline, told the Myerstown man to take the bomb out of the building and he obliged (bắt buộc), taking it outside and leaving it near a dumpster (thùng đựng rác).

Oxenreider’s bomb, two butane (chất butan) tanks filled with metal staples (kẹp kim loại) and wrapped (bọc) in cloth, could have caused serious injuries (vết thương)

But Oxenreider said he never meant to cause any harm, but instead intended (ý định) the bomb as a warning. In 2014, he told police, he had encountered (chạm trán) aliens who warned him that if humans did not “start being good people” they would destroy the planet with a “nuclear laser beam (chùm tia laser),"

"Wear oneself to a frazzle" hoặc "worn to a frazzle" = héo mòn đến kiệt quệ.

The attendant leaned closer. “How so? Doesn’t it light at all?” And that’s how my dad, worn to a frazzle, got hit by a spoonerism (nói lái) like nobody’s business.

"At the end, I had to dress her, bathe her. I had to do everything, she couldn't brush her teeth," he said. "When I look back, I don't even know how I did it myself. I was worn to a frazzle."

When he answers the phone to talk to Westword, Pyn Doll, lead guitarist (tay guitar chính) for the Greek rock band Barb Wire Dolls, sounds like a man who is both worn to a frazzle and spilling over (tràn đầy) with excitement.

Shouldn’t a grandmother who is babysitting (trông trẻ) her daughter’s two small children five days a week get paid something? My brother and his wife have our Mom doing this now for quite some time and they don’t pay her anything. She’s about worn to a frazzle.

"Drop the ball" nghĩa là gì?

Ướt mất rồi! Photo courtesy: Alan Glicksman

"Drop the ball" = đánh rơi bóng.

Timmy dropped the ball on doing this task again because of his carelessness. I can’t stand him anymore.

New professionals (chuyên gia) are told to "network" (giao thiệp) with no real concept of what that means, and they have the ability to ping (biết được) any number of prospective contacts through email, social media, etc. I'm glad to meet with people for whom I could be an actual resource, but I have no interest in wasting my time. My recent policy has been to intentionally (cố tình) "drop the ball" in email exchanges to see if the other person re-initiates contact.

But Toy Story 3 (the series offering that my sister not inaccurately (không chính xác) refers to as “the Holocaust (thiêu hàng loạt) one”) wrapped up the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the ambulatory-plaything gang (băng nhóm) with tremendous wit and an earned sense of finality (kết thúc), and did so while also implying that the toys' adventures would never really end. (At least, not as long as there were new children eager to play.) The film was terrific on its own, and even better as the final segment in a presumed trilogy, given that despite our sky-high expectations (kỳ vọng), it didn't drop the ball.

Vingroup makes everything from smartphones to schools. But civil activists fear its growing clout

...More seriously, some Vietnamese questioned whether — as in South Korea, where chaebols such as Samsung have been involved in scandals — their national policymakers and politicians are in danger of being used by Vingroup or any of the country’s other rising private companies.

In more than two decades as a foreign correspondent, I have found Vietnam’s communist government to be one of the most business-friendly I have encountered. As in China, the combination of a vibrant business environment with a non-democratic single-party state has helped to create the conditions for economic take-off. But in the absence of the normal checks and balances, such as a free press and a citizenry allowed to speak its mind, there is a risk of big companies gaining too much power — even one with Vingroup’s mission “to create a better life for the Vietnamese people”.

...“To be successful in Vietnam, you have to nurture relationships with people in the government to protect you,” Alexander Vuving, a Vietnamese-American scholar at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu, told me. “But once you have a close relationship with the powerful in an authoritarian state, it’s tempting to leverage it to silence your critics.”

While reporting this article, I came across multiple stories of Vingroup customers, activists and others who say they were either contacted by police or stalked after criticising the company. Negative news reports about the company have a way of disappearing from state-controlled media websites and Facebook.

"A drop in the bucket" nghĩa là gì?

Trầy chỗ nào vậy ta? Photo courtesy: watchsmart

"A drop in the bucket" = (chỉ là) một giọt trong xô nước.

A: I'm sorry I scratched (làm trầy) your car.
B: Don't worry about it. It's just a drop in the bucket. That car has more scratches (vết xước) on it than I can count.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Tuesday announced a big, fat crackdown (trừng trị) in which it’s targeting (nhắm đến) operators responsible for one billion illegal robocalls (cuộc gọi quảng cáo đến từ robot). Or, using verbiage (dài dòng) more appropriate to our current robocall nightmare, “a drop in the bucket.”

Farid explained that the new tool will allow media companies to upload videos that will then be run through an analysis (phân tích). After that, his team will make an assessment (đánh giá) on whether it's real or not. But there are concerns that putting this kind of technology in the hands of the media doesn't address the rapid spread of these types of videos on social media. "Of course it's a drop in the bucket," Farid said. "The solution is not just technology. The solution is technology, good reporting, better digital citizens, better companies, better policies."

"All by her lonesome" nghĩa là gì?

mình em đơn côi... Photo by Rosan Harmens on Unsplash.

'All by her lonesome' nghĩa là hoàn toàn cô đơn.

Ví dụ
She's fixing to cross wintry mountain ranges all the way to the ocean, all by her lonesome.

It's great having Reese, Nicole, Zoe, Laura and Shailene back, but Streep could single-handedly sink (chìm, đánh chìm, đánh đắm) this reunion (sum họp, hội họp (bạn bè, đồng nghiệp)) all by her lonesome.

Kate's second event for the day was a truly solo, all-by-her-lonesome visit to the Foundling Museum in London, where she was announced as a new patron (người bảo trợ, người đỡ đầu, ông bầu).

Moms are great and with the recent celebration of Mother's Day, we don't want to mislead anyone and say that women are insensitive to the relationships of their boyfriends to their moms. But perhaps the first date (ngày hẹn hò đầu tiên) really isn't the time and place to go on and on (nói rông dài) about your good old Ma and how she raised you all by her lonesome. We know you're proud and so are we—believe us we are—but save it for later in the relationship, if there is a later. The first date is more about getting to know that intelligent, funny, classy and ravishing beauty (đẹp mê hồn) sitting across from you.

Tommy Brownlee, 26, was taking part in the Chimney Challenge - which involves climbing up one flue (đường ống), crawling (bò) along a roof (mái nhà) space, and then going back down another to win free drinks.

But the lieutenant (trung úy) got stuck on the way down and was left the wrong way up, forcing firefighters (lính cứu hỏa) and specialist rescue (giải cứu) teams to come out to rescue him at the Royal Navy Air Station in Yeovilton, Somerset.
