"Footloose and fancy-free" nghĩa là gì?

Tuổi thơ bên nhau cho ta vô tư với bao mơ mộng. Photo by Tiraya Adam on Unsplash.

"Footloose and fancy-free" có từ foot-loose là rộng cẳng (tha hồ muốn đi đâu thì đi, muốn làm gì thì làm) và fancy là mong ước, ước muốn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tự do tự tại, không có mong ước, cam kết, hay ràng buộc gì, thường nói về ai đó chưa kết hôn hoặc đang trong thời gian hẹn hò; không trách nhiệm, không cam kết/hứa hẹn (dài lâu).

Ví dụ
Far from Home is a search for a mentor (người hướng dẫn), someone who can teach a boy how to become a man. But it is also a story about a teen with a Peter Pan complex (phức cảm), a junior superhero who wants to remain footloose and fancy-free, even though adult responsibilities await him. The temptation (tham vọng, sự thèm khát, cám dỗ) is to offload the mantle (áo khoác, áo choàng) of power (quyền lực) onto someone older and more qualified. But the right thing to do is to try, even if you make mistakes -- adults are not infallible (không thể mắc sai lầm) and can seriously mess things up (gây rối).

It would seem that being footloose and fancy-free and having to fend for (tự chăm sóc bản thân mà không nhờ ai giúp) oneself might not be a consummation (sự làm xong, sự hoàn thành) devoutly (một sự tận tụy) to be wished, as hinted at by the poet’s admission, “Me this uncharted freedom tires; /I feel the weight of chance desires.”

And it’s not just buy-to-let. London was also the main destination (địa điểm) for all the footloose and fancy-free global capital that wanted to find a secure bolthole (một chốt an toàn). Once foreign investors (các nhà đầu tư ngoại quốc) started being taxed more heavily (đánh thuế mạnh hơn), and their affairs (công việc) began to attract ever-so-slightly more scrutiny (xem xét lỹ lưỡng) than before, the market at the top end of London felt the squeeze (siết chặt) more than anywhere else.

"Gussy up" nghĩa là gì?

Khu phố trong sắc hồng. Photo by Samuel Zeller

"Gussy up" -> Ăn diện bảnh bao, trông thông minh, sảng sủa hoặc trang trí, cải thiện vẻ bề ngoài của cái gì đó.

Ví dụ
While the blueprints (kế hoạch chi tiết) require strict block placement, there's no reason you can't gussy up your towns with fancy decorations and other additions.

Trousdale Estates area of Beverly Hills that, after a lickety-split (tốc độ lớn) gussy up, is back on the market at not quite $18 million and their glass-walled beach-front contemporary (đương thời) getaway in Carpinteria, snapped up about two years ago for $18.6 million, is now in escrow (chứng thư giao kèm điều kiện) to be sold at a presumably (có thể đoán chừng) profitable amount after it came on the market about two months ago at $24 million.

While Wolverine was drawn as gruff (thô lỗ, cộc cằn) as every by Frank Quitely in the series, later artists would gussy him up to more resemble (tương đồng) "The sexiest man alive." Morrison himself intended this, remarking in the first trade of New X-Men that he wanted to include in readership "women who slavered (làm nô lệ) over Hugh Jackman." Conversely (ngược lại), the comic book version would begin to exhibit (trưng bày) the more powerful healing factor of the movie Wolverine, seemingly coming back from the most fatal (tai hại) of damage.

"Practice makes perfect" nghĩa là gì?

chạm tay vào điều ước :D Photo by: Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

"Practice makes perfect" = luyện tập hoặc lặp lại một việc gì đó nhiều lần sẽ khiến con người ta trở nên thành thục và khéo léo; 'có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim'.

Ví dụ
The four oldest of Jeff and Caroline Moellman’s five children spend hours every day practising the piano and the violin under the instruction of their parents. At the annual (hằng năm) Ontario Music Festival Association’s provincial competition (cuộc thi tỉnh) last month, the children proved (chứng tỏ) that practice makes perfect.

Armstrong and Aldrin rehearsed (diễn tập) collecting samples on fake, indoor moonscapes (quang cảnh cung trăng). Armstrong practiced taking off and landing in the Lunar Landing Training Vehicle in Houston. And, to simulate (mô phỏng) walking in the moon’s lower-gravity atmosphere (không gian trọng lực thấp của mặt trăng), astronauts (phi hành gia) were suspended sideways by straps and then walked along a tilted wall. NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey even blasted out (tạo ra) craters at Cinder Lake, Arizona to create a landscape that matched part of the moon’s surface—because, after all, practice makes perfect.

David Epstein is an Evanston native (người bản địa) who currently lives in Washington DC. His new book, "Range," is a book that challenges the idea that practice makes perfect. People who want to master a skill should gain a broad variety of skills first, then move into specialization (chuyên môn hóa).

"Send her flying" nghĩa là gì?

Bộp bộp bộp. Photo by Jakob Owens

"Send her flying" = Gửi ai đó bay đi -> Đá, ném, tông, quăng ai đó bật bay lên trên rồi rớt xuống đất.

Ví dụ
"I hit it on the head (đánh đầu) — it sent me flying and I landed on my hip (rớt xuống mái nhà).

A grieving (đau buồn) daughter told of her anguish (nỗi đau đớn) at watching a 'drugged-up' driver crash into a hearse (xe tang) and send her mother's coffin (quan tài) flying.

Driving on the moon is way more extreme than off-roading (địa hình gập ghềnh, hiểm hóc) on Earth. Wild temperature swings and unfiltered (không được lọc) sunlight will punish regular tires. Shards (mảnh vỡ) of dried lava (dung nham) will shred (xé thành miếng nhỏ) them. And there's six times less gravity (trọng lực), so if you hit a rock, it'll send you flying.

"Streak of good luck" nghĩa là gì?

Cỏ may mắn. Photo by Yan Ming

"Streak of (good) luck/fortune" -> Một chuỗi, một loạt những điều hoặc sự kiện may mắn liên tục xảy ra.

Ví dụ
“My eyes were opened to a different kind of school,” Day said. “I’ve always been very proud of the fact that I had the opportunity to go to Penn State. I never expected that type of opportunity. It was just kind of like a great streak of good luck.”

On the left was the radical (triệt để, quyết liệt), progressive (tiến bộ) Themistocles. Like Rhett Butler, he was daring, impetuous (mãnh liệt, dữ dội), and unscrupulous (cầu thả). Lacking full Athenian citizenship due to his birth, his political star rose due to a streak of good fortune and he lived a reckless (liều lĩnh) life of action. A tutor of Themistocles once said that—either for good or for evil—he would one day become a great man. Themistocles said he could not play the lyre (đàn lia), but he made Athens great.

Prior to the semifinals (trước trận bán kết), a streak of good fortune had temporarily pushed VAR from the headlines. America’s quarterfinal win over France last Friday, in what was called the “final before the final,” hinged on (bối rối) the one-woman magnificence (vẻ tráng lệ, nguy nga) of Megan Rapinoe; the officials were mercifully (nhân từ, khoan dung) peripheral (ngoại biên).

"Make my blood run cold" nghĩa là gì?

Ước chi một ngày mua hàng không cần nhìn giá! Photo by VanveenJF on Unsplash

"Make (one's) blood run cold" = làm cho máu lạnh toát -> ý chỉ sợ chết khiếp, vô cùng sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
No matter what form or what stage, that sentence is one that would make anyone’s blood run cold.

Apart from the race and something to carry your water bottle, the only thing you need to pay for is a decent (tử tế, lịch sự) pair of shoes. Prices are typically high enough to make your blood run cold, but those runners are worth it.

However, the withdrawal rate (tỉ lệ rút tiền) of between 5% and 6% recommended by the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA - Hiệp hội tiết kiệm và đầu tư Nam phi)) makes countless investors (vô số nhà đầu tư)’ blood run cold, because for so many on the brink of retirement (trên đà nghỉ hưu), it simply won’t be ‘enough’ to live off.

"The order of the day" nghĩa là gì?

giá điện tăng là điều bình thường... Photo by Dan Gold on Unsplash.

'The order of the day' nghĩa là phong tục thịnh hành, điều phổ biến, quan trọng. Ngoài ra, còn có nghĩa là (thứ tự) các vấn đề cần bàn luận trong một cuộc họp.

Ví dụ
Orange is still the order of the day for flamboyant Rickie Fowler ahead of final round at The Open.

Surge pricing (giá tăng theo thời điểm, cân đối cung cầu) remains the order of the day: We’ve got increased competition and cheaper sources of energy. So why are electricity prices rising?

Bright skies and low winds were the order of the day in Northern Ireland, a stark contrast to the heavy rain that is forecast to provide a huge challenge for the leaders on Sunday.

Unlike in North America, where the indigenous (bản địa) population was smaller and the European settlers much more numerous, in South America fusion (hợp nhất) was the order of day.

"Fall out of love" nghĩa là gì?

Tận cùng của nỗi đau. Photo by Nikita Herasimenka

"Fall out of love" = Đánh rơi tình yêu -> Dần dần hết yêu, không còn tình cảm với ai đó hoặc việc gì đó.

Ví dụ
What happens when we fall out of love with our business? What do you do about burnout (sự mệt mỏi khi đã phải làm việc quá sức)?

Talking of Breda, who has killed seven people and still hasn’t been caught, Bryan says that rumours (những lời đồn) she’ll team up with (hợp sức, cùng làm việc với) the soap’s (loạt phim) OTHER serial killer (kẻ giết người hàng loạt) Silas are unfounded – and promises a twist that will see viewers fall out of love with her.

Prince Harry’s most notable (có tiếng, có địa vị) and long-lasting relationship is with blonde (vàng hoe) bombshell (làm dư luận xôn xao) Chelsy Davy. They were often seen together from 2004 to 2011 and even attended Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding together. Their relationship ended shortly thereafter (sau đó, về sau). Fans of the royal couple (cặp đôi hoàng gia) were convinced that Davy was going to be “the one” and it was disheartening (làm nản lòng, nhụt chí) to see Prince Harry and Davy fall out of love.

"Do a number on" nghĩa là gì?

Vị đắng cuộc đời. Photo by Jonathan Rados

"Do a number on (someone or something) -> Gây tổn hại, tổn thất hoặc tổn thương tới ai hoặc điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
"It did a number on me because I played it wrong and I didn't play what I had to play against her," Halep said on the WTA Insider Podcast. "I didn't think that much during that match and I got really upset at myself.

"The harm is already happening here. Well, propose something that doesn't do a number on our community,”

“I believe that my daughter jumped to get away from him (nhảy lên để tránh xa anh ta). I truly believe that” Smith may be spending the rest of his life in a prison cell (xà lim), but even though police believe they found their guy, Leo knows nothing will bring back his girl. “Just don’t believe it, you know? Does everyone know that… why you gonna do a number on her?”

"Pea in the shoe" nghĩa là gì?

Em cho anh giận một giây thôi đó. Photo by Blake Cheek

"Pea in the shoe" = Hạt đậu trong chiếc giày -> Chỉ một sự bực bội, tức giận nho nhỏ hoặc một xíu thôi; việt nam thì thường ví là 'hòn sỏi trong gót giầy' đó bạn :)

Ví dụ
Aside from (bên cạnh) the annoying pop-ups that it throws on occasion, things have been quiet otherwise. Except for a pea in the shoe, the email signature.

Snoring (ngáy): It’s only funny if you or the person you sleep next to aren’t suffering from it. Contrary to popular belief, it’s far from a pea in the shoe. It’s actually the cause (nguyên nhân cốt lõi) of many serious health problems, and it can lead to irritability (sự dễ cáu), impaired (suy yếu, tổn thất) judgment, and reduced problem-solving & conflict-resolution skills (kỹ năng xử lý vấn đề và giải quyết xung đột). But luckily, Smart Nora is the easy, non-invasive (không xâm lấn) method to stop snoring once and for all without masks or mouth pieces.

At four tabs, this is likely the optimal (tối ưu) number of menu items for the client. A pea in the shoe is a changed back behavior after entering and scrolling (cuộn lên xuống) through search results. Instead of returning to the previous screen, the system back button now exits you from the app. A tap of the bottom bar is required to navigate (điều hành, duyệt thông tin) elsewhere.

"A lot on my plate" nghĩa là gì?

Tôi sẽ xong việc sớm thôi. Photo by  Thought Catalog

"A lot on my plate" = Có rất nhiều thứ trên dĩa của ai đó -> Có rất nhiều công việc để làm.

Ví dụ
“And that’s really three different positions. That’s three different fundamentals (quy tắc cơ bản); that’s three different techniques (kỹ năng, kỹ thuật). You’re involved in the run game, the passing game and pass protection. So, you have a lot on your plate.”

I spend a lot of time in France, where humble (khiêm nhường) municipal (đô thị, thành phố) gendarmes (hiến binh) routinely wear holstered pistols (súng bao da dấu bên trong các dây thắt lưng) on duty (theo bổn phận, nghĩa vụ). I don't feel threatened by that. Our next prime minister (thủ tướng) will have a lot on his plate.

Chris Boswell will be on everybody’s radar at Saint Vincent College, but place kicking isn’t the only aspect of the Steelers’ special teams that figures to be heavily scrutinized (kiểm tra chặt chẽ) this summer. Coordinator (điều phối viên) Danny Smith will have a great deal on his plate.

"In a lip lock" nghĩa là gì?

Anh yêu em. Photo by  Alejandra Quiroz

"In a lip lock" = Trong một cuộc khóa môi -> Đang hôn nhau nồng nhiệt. :))))

Ví dụ
In the said video, the 49-year-old singer and songwriter (nhạc sĩ) is seen in a lip lock with another man who clearly looks nothing like her boyfriend.

This candid (vô tư, bộc trực) picture of Priyanka and Nick sharing a passionate lip-lock on the red carpet (trên thảm đỏ) left everyone swooning over them (bị xúc động, ngất trước họ).

The adorable duo (bộ đôi) celebrated their engagement (lễ đính hôn) with a romantic lip-lock.

As per Spotboye report, the lead couple (cặp đôi vai chính) Tejasswi and Kunal refused to do lip-lock scene! When Tejasswi was asked regarding the same, she revealed that the makers (nhà sản xuất) had initially asked her and Kunal do a lip-lock scene.

"A face like a wet weekend" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Vincent Delegge on Unsplash

Khi ai đó nói bạn có "a face like a wet weekend" tức là bạn đang có một khuôn mặt dường như vừa bị tổn thương, buồn bã, thảm hại.

Ví dụ:
So here we have it, Cllr Goodman on local TV, with a face like a wet weekend, telling us the only way to ‘clean air’ is by introducing a Congestion charge.

Uhtred’s Saxon followers aren’t a bit keen to invade (xâm chiếm) their homeland, and their lord gets a face like a wet weekend every time a fellow Dane slams down (ném phịch) his cup of ale and promises to burn Wessex to the ground.

He came on when the game was entering its final stages, with a face like a wet weekend, he stepped up to take the penalty (droit du seigneur for being Florentino’s pet), converted from the spot then shrugged (lay) off his team mates as they rushed over to try and celebrate with him.

"As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly" nghĩa là gì?

Ủa! Hình như có gì sai sai! Photo by Fredrik Öhlander on Unsplash

"As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly" (Như việc một con chó có thể ăn lại những thứ nó nôn ra, một người ngu ngốc có thể lặp lại những sai lầm của họ.) là câu thành ngữ ý muốn nói rằng những người ngu ngốc thường có xu hướng lặp lại những lỗi lầm, những hành động sai trái mà họ đã từng gây ra.

Ví dụ
As the Book of Proverbs says, "As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly". Perhaps as prime minister, Mr Turnbull should have read his Proverbs before attaching himself to the same policy that had previously ended his job as opposition leader.

McCormick got a penitentiary sentence (tuyên án cải tạo) in 2009 for a string of break-ins (đường dây đột nhập vào các toà nhà để trộm cắp). He then followed the law for several years, working as a roofer (thợ lợp mái). But earlier this year, McCormick fell back into a life of drugs and crime. "As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly," said defence lawyer Hal Mattson, quoting from the Book of Proverbs in the Bible.

Gordon Offin-Amaniampong writes: As a dog returns to his vomit so a fool repeats his folly. Did that strike a cord? Maybe it did, maybe it did not. Probably, I can do better than that. So how about this---: A nation that’s prone to what I term ‘Convenience Politics’ would perpetually (không ngớt, không ngừng, liên tục) lack social, economic and political development, it would permanently lag behind its peer group of nations but above all, it would miserably (cực kỳ, kinh khủng) leave its people impoverished (bần cùng hóa, làm cho nghèo khổ) if not reduced to nothing. The reason, the game never changes. It’s politics as usual they say. And it’s same old political gimmicks or politricks. This is their mantra: ‘we know the government or the opponents are right but we won’t go with them’.

"Let the dog see the rabbit" nghĩa là gì?

Ngày dài chả biết làm gì. Photo by Nicola Dreyer on Unsplash

Albert might have been in public a happy 'let the dog see the rabbit' sort of man, but he rolled the dice (gieo xúc xắc) with some of the greatest political cardsharps (kẻ cờ gian bạc lận) of his time.

Christine says she has made Paddy, famous for his catchphrases “no likey, no lighty” and “Let the dog see the rabbit”, promise to cut out the one-liners (bỏ những lời nói đùa) when she goes into labour (vào phòng đẻ).

Byrne and event producer John Kennedy travel down to Dingle from Dublin six or seven times a year for meetings and to check out new places to host the trail. “You do have to be on the ground to ‘let the dog see the rabbit’, so to speak."

"Shore leave" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Oliver Sjöström on Unsplash.

'Shore leave' nghĩa là thời gian nghỉ phép chính thức một thủy thủ chuyên nghiệp được phép lên bờ (thường nhậu/chè chén say sưa, bài bạc, ngủ với gái...), được hiểu là (khoảng thời gian) tự do trong hải quân Mỹ.

Ví dụ
Though Spieth is ranked 16th on tour in first-round scoring and second in second-round scoring, he has been stumbling across the weekend like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Veronica is back at Neptune, serving as co-owner of her dad’s detective (thám tử tư) agency. Logan is back on shore leave and she’s getting her kisses in while she can. There’s a new mystery (bí ẩn) as someone is trying to sabotage (phá hoại ngầm) Spring Break, driving tourist dollars away from Neptune and hurting small businesses. Patton Oswalt is involved somewhere. And through it all, Veronica tries her best not to swear.

The game begins by placing the two players in control of a pair of navy blokes (thuyền trưởng; gã, chàng), back in what feels like a WWII era setting. This duo is enjoying some drunken shore leave at a fairground of sorts. You're soon shepherded (trông nom săn sóc, hướng dẫn, dẫn dắt) towards some sideshow attractions (điểm thu hút) that explain the mechanics of the game: one of you tries out a punching-based (đấm bốc) fairground challenge that teaches the combat controls (kỹ thuật chiến đấu); meanwhile, the other player goes to a fortune-teller (bói toán) booth where you learn the conversational and decision-making mechanics. Then you swap.
