"Full of life" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Miguel Bruna on Unsplash

"Full of life" = tràn đầy sức sống, nhiều năng lượng, yêu đời.

Ví dụ
Amphibians (động vật lưỡng cư, crocodiles and fish lived in the swamp (đầm lầy), and on dry land, small and large dinosaurs. It was full of life.

Though full of life, the slums (khu ổ chuột) of Buenos Aires, where seven percent of the city’s population lives, are nobody’s idea of a fun place.

Honeyland is, like Hatidze, full of life. She’s the last woman working as a wild beekeeper (nuôi ong) in Europe, and there’s little boundary (ranh giới nhỏ) between herself and the hives (tổ ong) she tends (chăm sóc).

An Indian man reportedly killed in his hometown of Thane on Friday night by unknown assailants (kẻ tấn công) was a caring, kind hearted and jovial (vui vẻ) man 'full of life', staff working at the Dubai restaurant he owned told Khaleej Times.

"A full-court press" nghĩa là gì?

Nói lắm trời tối rồi kìa. Photo by Charles 🇵🇭 on Unsplash

"A full-court press" có từ "court" là sân bóng rổ và "press"là từ viết tắt của "Pressure," nghĩa là gây áp lực. Trong bóng rổ, đây là chiến thuật đội phòng thủ gây áp lực lên đội tấn công trên toàn bộ sân bằng. Hiện nay cụm từ này có nghĩa là sự cố gắng/ áp lực (lên ai đó) để đạt được thành tựu.

Ví dụ
But the court loss may have triggered (gây ra) a new chain of events. That day, two Republican senators (thượng nghị sĩ Đảng Cộng hòa) put on a full-court press to get Trump to intervene (can thiệp).

The Clippers’ front office put on a full-court press to retain (giữ chân) him, signifying (cho thấy) how much they value him and wanted him back, according to sources. That mattered (quan trọng) to Green.

I think if the US ‘Full court press’ trade negotiation tactics (chiến lược đàm phán thương mại) are successful, then the outcome (kết quả) for Australian beef exports could be devastating (tàn phá) in terms of losing the market advantages (mất lợi thế thị trường) we once enjoyed, both in price and volume (khối lượng).

"Not playing with a full deck" nghĩa là gì?

May ra thì thắng được. Photo by Inês Ferreira on Unsplash

"Not playing with a full deck" có từ "deck" trong "deck of cards" tức là bộ bài có 52 lá. Nếu người nào chơi thiếu bài ("not playing with a full deck") thì người đó thiếu trung thực và đang tạo lợi thế cho người khác. Cụm từ này cũng chỉ người không bình thường/ không thông minh.

Ví dụ
Marty uses the alias (biệt hiệu) “Marty Tollington” on Facebook – we know that because he is dumb enough to admit it. Similarly, he uses an alias on Twitter (IronHorseman101), and is dumb enough to link to his Facebook page from it. Marty is clearly not playing with a full deck.

My present policy is to pretend that I am insane (giả vờ điên). Just as no insane person could be executed (tử hình) under the law (until Henry VIII changed it), I operate on the premise (giả thuyết) that no journalist will bother with a person who isn’t playing with a full deck.

The Astros aren’t exactly playing with a full deck right now. Shortstop Carlos Correa is still on the mend (hồi phục) after broken ribs (gãy xương sườn) were the result of a massage gone terribly wrong while All-Star Alex Bregman bowed out of Thursday night’s game with a lacerated chin (cằm rách) (it took four stiches to close the gash).

"Dead from the neck up" nghĩa là gì?

Designed by Freepik

"Dead from the neck up" = trông liệt từ cổ đổ lên -> nghĩa là ngu ngốc, ngớ ngẩn.

Ví dụ
If I have to tell you what a socialist (thuộc đảng xã hội) win for the White House means for our future, you're already dead from the neck up.

The manager is dead from the neck up. How could he assign (giao) such a big task to Jimmy, he is a newbie (người mới) and clueless (không biết gì). Now we are in this mess (mớ hỗn độn) thanks to him.

“These days, the American dream is more apt (có khuynh hướng) to be realized (thực hiện) in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina.” – Bernie Sanders said. With the Trump economy busily humming (hoạt động mạnh) in the background, you would have to be dead from the neck up to believe that.

Even for those not into comics or who aren't all that familiar (quen thuộc) with Marvel, those interested in the stories of humanity (nhân loại) striving (đấu tranh) to be its best to overcome (vượt qua) the challenges (thử thách) and evils (cái xấu) that present themselves to the world on occasion will find something to adore (thích). "I think you have to have no heart or be dead from the neck up, if you can't be affected (bị ảnh hưởng) by some of what you will see in here," Saunders said.

"Battle of the bulge" nghĩa là gì?

Image by PublicDomainPictures from Pixabay

"Battle of the bulge" là tên một cuộc chiến trong Chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai, ngày nay nó được dùng để chỉ nỗ lực giảm cân, giữ dáng.

Ví dụ
Sorry, I can't go out and eat with you. I am in the battle of the bulge.

The battle of the bulge may seem daunting (gây nản chí), but the Health Ministry (Bộ) believes it is not an unwinnable (không thể thắng được) fight.

How far would you go to beat (đánh bại) the battle of the bulge? Gym at 6am? Give up bread, potatoes and pasta? Banish (từ bỏ) the biscuit barrel (hộp bánh quy) and chuck away (quăng bỏ) the chocolate?

With an increasing urban (thành thị) population (dân số), rising disposable (sẵn có) incomes (thu nhập) and a growing taste for international dishes, it's no wonder that China is facing a new problem-obesity (béo phì). To help bolster (giúp) the battle of the bulge, the State Council (Quốc vụ viện), China's Cabinet (chính phủ), issued (ban hành) a guideline (chỉ dẫn, đường lối) recently to implement (thực hiện) the Healthy China initiative (khởi xướng), which encourages (động viên) people to adopt (làm theo) healthier lifestyles and diets.

"Bitten by the bug" nghĩa là gì?

Image by Livia Novakova from Pixabay

"Bitten by the bug" = bị bọ cắn -> ý chỉ việc bất ngờ trở nên hào hứng với một công việc, sự việc nào đó. Những sự việc, công việc gây hào hứng đó thường được đặt giữa từ "the" và từ "bug".

Ví dụ
Linda is bitten by the K-pop bug. She spends all days watching performances (màn biểu diễn) of these idol singers from Korea.

I'm still not bitten by the football bug despite how many people around me become so excited over it.

Jake Gyllenhaal has been bitten by the baby bug! Desires (Ao ước) to become a father. Jake Gyllenhaal wishes to be a father someday!

That was the first time Judy met her in-laws (họ hàng nhà vợ/chồng) and attended an actual horse race at a harness track (đường đua ngựa). It only took that one time and she was bitten by the horse bug.

"Blown out of the water" nghĩa là gì?

Image by Fathromi Ramdlon from Pixabay

"Blown out of the water" = bị thổi bay ra khỏi mặt nước -> ý chỉ việc thất bại hoàn toàn, bị đánh bại một cách dễ dàng. Cụm từ này được lấy hình tượng từ việc những con thuyền khi chiến đấu bị trúng hỏa lực của đối phương.

Ví dụ
The Argonauts have had a rough (vất vả) start to the season (mùa giải), from being blown out of the water by Hamilton to losing by a single point to BC, Toronto is currently (hiện tại) the only team to not have a single game in the win column.

Mr Versteege said the industry could previously (trước đây) argue (tranh luận) problems in nursing homes (nhà dưỡng lão) were exceptions (trường hợp ngoại lệ) and the vast majority (phần lớn) were providing quality care, but that had been "blown out of the water" by media coverage (sự đưa tin của truyền thông) and royal (hoàng gia) commission (mệnh lệnh) investigations (điều tra).

Newcastle fans have seen these last 70+ days as a draining (gây kiệt quệ) depressing (chán nản) experience, a couple of years of austerity (sự khắt khe) forced (áp đặt lên) on Rafa Benitez after returning to the Premier League and any hopes of progress (tiến bộ), now blown out of the water by the NUFC owner (chủ) as he happily pushed (đẩy) the top class manager out of the exit door.

I hate change. I’ve always been a creature (sinh vật) of habit (thói quen) who revels (miệt mài) in the familiar (quen thuộc) and finds comfort in what she knows best. So when parenthood (giai đoạn trở thành cha/mẹ) came knocking, I was blown out of the water. The surrender (từ bỏ) of my sleep, the overwhelming (quá mức) responsibility (trách nhiệm), and a baby who cried almost as much as I did and who pooped so much that I should have considered (cân nhắc) going into the fertiliser (phân bón) business, was enough to send me into turmoil (rối loạn) and wonder (tự hỏi) what on earth had possessed (ám ảnh, ảnh hưởng) me to upset the apple cart of my previous comfort zone (phá hỏng kế hoạch ở trong vùng an toàn của bản thân).

"Full of piss and vinegar" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ashton Bingham on Unsplash

"Full of piss and vinegar" có từ "piss" và "vinegar" là "nước tiểu" và "giấm". Cụm từ này ý chỉ (ai đó) sôi nổi và nhiệt tình quá mức. Cụm từ sử dụng lần đầu bởi Mickey Spillane trong Death Dealers (1966): “You were young and fast and strong. Full of piss and vinegar.”

Ví dụ
“Her kid brother was about 14 years old and full of piss and vinegar,” Klein wrote. “Like any typical 14-year-old, he enjoyed aggravating big sis (chọc tức chị cả), and on this day, he kept turning the radio up louder than she was willing to tolerate (tha thứ).

Bruce was so very witty (hóm hỉnh) and intelligent and funny and even though at the time, I was half full of piss and vinegar, like so many of the youth of the 1980s, I did attain (đạt được) a lot of good wisdom (kiến thức) from Bruce on life and especially his big love for movies.

The knight of the realm (hiệp sỹ của vương quốc) was full of piss and vinegar even though this was the 38th of 39 dates on a tour that started last September. Two hours and 45 minutes with no intermission (không gián đoạn) and he never left the stage. He didn’t even say “hi” until two songs in.

"Go down the rabbit hole" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn gì?? Chưa thấy thỏ bao giờ à?? Photo by: Gary Bendig on Unsplash

"Go down the rabbit hole" = rơi xuống hang thỏ, tích truyện Alice đến xứ sở diệu kỳ -> lâm vào tình huống hay bắt đầu một quá trình rất kỳ lạ/kỳ cục, khó khăn, phức tạp, hoặc hỗn loạn, nhất là trường hợp độ phức tạp/hỗn loạn đó ngày càng thêm rối rắm...

Ví dụ
It’s critical (tối quan trọng, cốt yếu) for us to understand that the ripples of this behaviour have consequences (hậu quả), and in particular (đặc biệt), they permeate (thấm đẫm) masculine culture everywhere. Any parent will be aware of the new pressures of dealing with the conundrums (những câu hỏi hóc búa) of social media once your children can go down the rabbit hole of accessible internet.

Stone isn’t shy (tự ti) to admit that the concept (ý tưởng) of Young Southpaw is strange. He doesn’t expect everyone to get what he’s trying to do right off the bat, but he knows what it’s all about, and he loves being able to go down the rabbit hole with his material. Stone is hoping to make Boston a monthly stop with Bat Soup, but before that happens, he’s just really looking forward to bringing his material to a crowd that will get it.

To really go down the rabbit-hole, Nebura even made designs for the TFT board based off of alternate universes introduced by popular League of Legends skin collections seen with the ‘Pixel Kingdom,’ ‘Buraddo Mun,’ ‘Cottontail’s Lair’ and more.

"Catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Matthew T Rader on Unsplash

"Catch more flies/bees with honey than with vinegar" = mật ong thu hút nhiều ruồi/ ong hơn là dấm hay nói cách khác là mật ngọt thì chết ruồi, ai lại từ chốt (lời nói) ngọt ngào, nhẹ nhàng bao giờ.

Ví dụ
The best advice was: “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” Basically, you get what you want with kindness, not aggression (tấn công), whether in negotiations (đàm phán) or leading people.

You know the saying "you catch more bees with honey than vinegar?" Well, I'm making up a new one: You get fresher McDonald's fries with kindness than aggravated assault (chọc điên). Doesn't have quite the same ring, but you get it.

I've seen first hand (tận mắt thấy) how people turn into Dr. Jekyll the second they get behind their camera, and it's not pretty. I shouldn't have to say this, but don't forget your manners while on a shoot. It's somewhat of a cliche (sáo rỗng), but you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, and this is just as true when shooting.

"Breed like rabbits" nghĩa là gì?

Chú thỏ hồng trên lá vàng rơi. Photo by Noah Silliman

"Breed like rabbits" = Đẻ như thỏ (thỏ vốn được biết đẻ con rất nhiều và nhanh chóng) -> Chỉ ai đó sinh con nhiều/liên tục trong một thời gian ngắn.

Ví dụ
Good Roman Catholics (công giáo) do not need to breed like "rabbits", the Pope (giáo hoàng) has said, but should practise "responsible" parenting instead.

Limiting our growing human population (dân số) is one factor in the equation (sự cân bằng) – fortunately, when women are educated and empowered with choices, they tend to limit the sizes of their families; it's when societies break down and people are very deprived (tước đoạt, cách chức) that they "breed like rabbits".

With a reported 35 million Americans claiming Irish ancestry (tổ tiên), it’s clear we breed like rabbits when given the space, so much so that the population of Ireland itself is now dwarfed by a ratio of around 7:1 by our North American cousins. A quick look at the map from the Washington Post reveals the geographical trend (xu thế theo khu vực), with the Mid West and North East proving popular spots. The hotter, desert states weren’t as attractive, with decent sunscreen only coming to the market in the early 20th century. We burn easily, us Irish folk (họ hàng thân thuộc).

"Gather (one's) wits" -> Hoàn hồn lại, trấn tĩnh lại để bình tĩnh suy nghĩ một cách hợp lý và đúng đắn.

Ví dụ
If you can manage to gather your wits after that utterly fabulous news (tin bịa đặt, hoang đường), check out some of our favorite reveals from the panel below!

Overwhelmed and Confused: After a string of unfortunate stressful experiences, some individuals need time to let the dust settle, and gather their wits about them. They do not need to make major changes to their lives, and often do well with reassurance (sự làm yên lòng).

Before I could gather my wits about me, I heard another bang (tiếng sập mạnh) to the onside rear door of my car, then another and another. It was then I realized I was in the midst of a mob (băng nhóm tội phạm) intent on doing me harm. "Dodge a bullet" = né viên đạn -> suýt soát tránh được tình huống mà lẽ ra rất nguy hiểm, thảm khốc, không mong muốn, có hại; gần giống 'thoát chết trong đường tơ kẽ tóc' đó các bạn

Ví dụ
This will also help maintain (duy trì) the current value (giá trị) of Smith, the Giants’ closer. If the Giants were in sell mode, the chances of Smith ending up elsewhere as a set-up man would be high. If they decide to hold him, he remains a closer and fantasy owners dodge a bullet.

While it appears we will dodge a bullet when it comes to potential-Hurricane Barry, seeing a storm rumble through (quét qua) the Gulf of Mexico should not only trigger some Harvey-related PTSD, but remind us that during hurricane season, we often have to deal with bad weather. Forget the wind, water kills most people in tropical storms (bão nhiệt đới), both the storm surge and the rainfall. If anyone understands this, it's Houstonians.

“We are, of course, monitoring beaches (giám sát các bãi biển). Our Sea Turtle Cooperative members have all been advised, so they know if any whales turn up, that we’re aware as soon as possible. Đừng nhờn với anh. Photo by DeMorris Byrd

"Mess with (one's) head" = Mớ hỗn độn trong đầu -> Khiến ai đó nổi cáu, tức giận, khó chịu, rối bời và vân vân mây mây. :)))))

Ví dụ
I walked for miles to sort my head out under the pretence (giả vờ) that I was looking after the dog. This job can mess with your head.

Now 48, he said: "For years and years I couldn't get over it. I lost my faith in the system and adults in general. It really did mess with my head. At one time I got suicidal (tự tử)."

Over the long term, stocks (cổ phần) way outperform bonds. Stocks are more volatile (biến đổi)– value bonces more – but clearly more profitable if you can hang on and not have to sell. This is especially important for retirement planning, where poppycock (chuyện tầm phào) drivel like “you should have 100 minus your age as the percentage invested in stocks” can really mess with your head and screw up (siết chặt) your returns (doanh số).

"Make yourself understood" nghĩa là gì?

"Make (oneself) understood" = Làm cho bản thân được hiểu -> Cố gắng làm cho người hiểu chính xác ý mà bạn muốn truyền đạt tới.

Ví dụ
"But the amount of time you've spent in Spain and you haven't been able to pick up enough language to make yourself understood?".

As you consider what you do to make yourself understood, it releases a part of you that was hidden inside. Saturn and Pluto spice up contacts and hearing from an “S” name from the past makes for a passion boost.

I volunteer in a primary school helping the very youngest children get to grips (nắm vững kiến thức) with the English language. 'On the blink' = trong ánh sáng chập chờn, nhấp nháy -> làm việc không được thuận lợi, có trục trặc, hành động khác lạ. Ngoài ra thi thoảng nó cũng được dùng với nghĩa 'say xỉn'.

Ví dụ
Around 10.30 pm on Saturday, runway lights went on the blink due to rainwater seepage (rò rỉ, thấm qua). This was confirmed by Air Traffic Control (ATC) officials after inspection of the airstrip at 10.35 pm.

Even from the outer fringes (mép ngoài) of the stacked main stage, where the speakers make the guitars of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory sound like a washing machine on the blink, the effect is still transcendent (siêu việt, lớn).

The story opened in a fancy (tưởng tượng) house with a swimming pool and a party in full swing. But out in the kitchen, dad (Babou Ceesay) was pressing a knife into his palm (lòng bàn tay) until the blood ran. Cut to one year earlier and a different house, a shabby terrace (hiên nhà cũ) where the fridge was on the blink and a repo (mua lại) man was quizzing dad about unpaid parking fines.
