"A shoulder to cry on" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu ngoài kia khó khăn quá, hãy về đây có anh chờ :) Photo by: Toimetaja tõlkebüroo on Unsplash

"A shoulder to cry on" = một bờ vai để dựa vào -> lắng nghe, cảm thông, an ủi người khác khi họ đau buồn, trong hoàn cảnh tồi tệ.

Ví dụ
Like dating, making friends involves kissing some frogs (hôn một vài chú ếch) and you need to be ready to make mistakes and display vulnerabilities (dễ tổn thương). You have nothing to be ashamed of and everything to gain by stepping out of your domestic life (cuộc sống nội tâm) to scout for buddies. Whether you try a book group or a gym class, a drink with a colleague who catches your eye, or make a rendezvous (cuộc hẹn) as an act of kindness with someone who looks like they need a shoulder to cry on, proactive behaviour will eventually earn you the results you’re after. The world is full of people hoping and praying for connection with others, not just likes on social media.

Instead, she helps develop (phát triển) a more advanced version of his suit that incorporates First One tech. Doing so greatly amplifies (khuếch đại) the potential of the suit and reduces the pain he's in. But more than that, she offers Hordak a shoulder to cry on. He finally opens up about his origins for the first time. He reveals the tragic elements of his young life, revealing that he's actually a clone of the real Hordak.

Strength is letting people in, no matter how many times you’ve been hurt before. Strength is being able to say, “I’m not OK right now. I need you.” Just remember, it’s OK to need someone. It’s OK to need a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen to you, a hand to hold. We all need someone to remind us that we’re not invincible (bất bại) — that we are not alone.

"King of the hill" nghĩa là gì?

Cẩn thận nhìn nhầm nha Photo by from Pexels

'King of the hill' = vua của ngọn đồi -> người/vị trí quyền lực, thành công nhất trong một nhóm hay tổ chức.

Ví dụ
When it comes to cryptocurrency (tiền ảo), Bitcoin has long been the king of the hill thanks to its status as the founder of the young industry and its first-mover appeal. A decade later, the original cryptocurrency is still the most valuable one on the market, at one point even reaching as high as $20,000 for a single Bitcoin.

The rise of Kotlin has been meteoric (nhanh chóng, sao băng), and a new report sheds some light on Android developers’ preferences. We took a look at the recent history of Kotlin and traced its growth over the last couple of years, looked at the state of Kotlin today, and then looked briefly to the future. Will Kotlin eat more of Java’s share or will Java remain king of the hill?

In the G10, beyond the immediate adverse reaction in commodity currencies, there remains a potential from more downside for the EUR as the threat of auto tariffs (thuế quan) persists. Also, global growth is mushy (yếu), and it far too early in the easing (lắng dịu) cycle, the impact from the Fed and China's credit easing to feed into data. So, it’s unlikely the US dollar is about to give up its king of the hill status anytime soon.

"Cat has nine lives" nghĩa là gì?

Ngậm miệng lại đi...ruồi bay vô trong giờ. Photo by  Erik-Jan Leusink

"Cat has nine lives" = Con mèo có 9 mạng -> Những con mèo có thể sống sót, tồn tại và chịu đựng trong hoàn cảnh mà có nhiều mối nguy hiểm rình rập và kể cả cái chết.

Ví dụ
If every cat has nine lives, Mario may have exhausted most of his during the four years he'd been missing from his owner's home before turning up 36 miles away.

A cat has nine lives and so does the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. Seventeen years since its founding and $2.8 billion later, the L.M.D.C. should have completed its mission. Are there political motivations for Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Mayor Bill de Blasio for defending this agency and keeping it open? It is time for the L.M.D.C. to close its doors and move on.

Cats have nine lives, remember?) Each of the main cats — the curiously named Munkustrap, Jennyanydots, Rum Tum Tugger, Grizabella, Bustopher Jones, Mungojerrie, Rumpleteazer, Jellylorum, Skimbleshanks, Mr. Mistoffelees and more — get moments to shine and show off their distinctive (đặc tính) personalities in choreographed (sáng tác và dàn dựng) dance numbers.

"In next to no time" -> Còn rất ít thời gian thôi.

Ví dụ
Leeds took over the contest in the second period and put Bristol City to the sword in next to no time.

Samarawickrama not only won the richest prize in Sri Lanka’s schools cricket in 2014 but also capitalized (lợi dụng, dùng làm vốn) on that to enter the Sri Lanka team in next to no time as most of his predecessors have done.

“I – and others – have written to the Home Office to explain that, for a pilot to proceed, all that is required is a simple amendment (sử cải tà quy chính) to the Misuse of Drugs Act. “This could be laid as a Statutory Instrument and would take next to no time at all.”

"Go with the flow" nghĩa là gì?

Giữa dòng Photo by Matthew Leland from Pexels

'Go with the flow' = trôi theo dòng nước -> dễ dàng thích nghi với hoàn cảnh, chấp nhận xu hướng, thuận theo ý muốn của người khác hơn là cố gắng phấn đấu, phản kháng

Ví dụ
So, if the Russians and the Americans seem ready to view the painfully constructed arms control regimes (chế độ) of the twentieth century as disposable, most Europeans seem ready to go with the flow.

The problem is that when things are running smoothly, it’s tempting (xu hướng) to go with the flow and avoid asking questions that might come with tough answers. The problem is that when things are running smoothly, it’s tempting to go with the flow and avoid asking questions that might come with tough answers.

From beautiful walks along Sydney’s coastline (bờ biển), to the breezes (gió nhẹ) of the fresh salty ocean air, a new idea would suddenly spring open and I’d get out my notepad, or we would do a ‘live stream.’ It was teaching me to be ‘in the moment,’ to not overthink it, and to just go with the flow and the answers will come…

"Work like a dream" nghĩa là gì?

Okay, ổn đấy! Photo by Adeolu Eletu

"Work/go like a dream" -> Làm việc một cách rất hoàn hảo, thành công và không gặp bất kỳ vấn đề nào.

Ví dụ
Indeed, Clark, this early, is proving to live up to its tagline (dây giữ gàu), “Clark: It works. Like a dream.” And hopefully, soon enough, we will realize and reap the benefits of this ambitious dream.

Now, I know the negative aspects of the company’s devices. They’re expensive, they’re not as customisable (theo ý khách hàng) as Android devices, and work best in Apple’s ecosystem. None of this is false. But Apple — in my experience — simply make the best smartphones on the market. They’re well-built, work like a dream, and are intuitive (có trực giác). And I always keep coming back.

The Oneida onion chopper has over 90 reviews with the majority of them rating it between four and five stars. As one shopper wrote, “Timesaver that works like a dream. This chopper works for onions, garlic, carrots and celery. Makes beautiful uniform vegetables for making soup. Works great even on hard carrots. Will use for potato pancakes next!!!”

"Take (someone or something) by storm" -> Chế ngự, áp đảo và tấn công ai/cái gì một cách ào ạt và đột ngột.

Ví dụ
Having taken the Championship by storm in 2017/18, Mitrović managed 11 goals last season despite Fulham's dismal (buồn thảm) attempts to stay up.

As part of our weekly Big Championship Debate Reach football writers all of our clubs have given their verdicts (lời phán quyết) on the best youngster to watch out for from their teams this season. These are the players who they have tipped to take the league by storm this coming campaign.

Last season saw the breakthrough (sự đột phá) of some hugely talented players, with players such as Norwich’s starlets Max Aaron, Jamal Lewis and Ben Godfrey all taking the division by storm with some stellar displays.

"Earn a crust" nghĩa là gì?

Đời thế này là đủ. Photo by Allie Smith

"Earn a crust" = Kiếm vỏ bánh -> Kiếm miếng ăn hằng ngày, kiếm tiền bằng mọi cách mà bạn có thể để đủ trang trải cho cuộc sống.

Ví dụ
But in the meantime, a Viking has to earn a crust. Here's the latest news, sent to us by raven (quạ) from our extensive network of wily (xảo trá, quỷ quyệt) footballing spies.

Straight off the bat, players will have to decide if they want to represent a defendant who subscribes to the very tyranny (bạo ngược) that's oppressing (đè nặng, đán áp) both Foley and the people around him. Doing so will help restore his reputation and earn his crust, but might also place those he cares for in danger.

With work getting underway imminently (sắp xảy ra), the club should make full use of Bale’s bench-dwelling experience and employ him as their seat quality assessor. You may not be doing much Gareth, but at least you’ll earn your crust – and your arse (mông) should be splinter-free if you choose right.

"Feel a glow of happiness" nghĩa là gì?

"Feel a glow of happiness" = Cảm nhận ánh sáng rực rỡ của niềm hạnh phúc -> Bạn vui sướng và mãn nguyện.

Ví dụ
Feeling of fear or confusion as it is to feel that warm, cozy glow of happiness.

Yet, the cosmos (sự hài hòa) giveth and taketh away. “You have the skin of a 12-year-old,” my friend observed. It was true – there was some sort of eerie, peachy smoothness to it. Was it the glow of happiness? A surge in collagen or hormones? Either way, no one believed for a second that we weren’t getting any sleep.

According to Forbes, the brand decided to “hyper-focus” on attracting millennial (kéo dài một ngàn năm) males with a series of new advertisements that “featur[ed] young males opening a bottle of Mike’s and being engulfed (chìm đắm) in a glow of happiness.” Despite those efforts, there are countless threads on forums like Reddit where men debate and hand-wring over whether or not Mike’s is actually a “girly” drink.

"Rock the house" nghĩa là gì?

Đêm nay hãy cháy hết mình. Photo by Kyle Wong

"Rock the house" = Làm cho ngôi nhà rung chuyển -> Khêu ra, gợi ra sự phản ứng lại cho khán giả mà bạn đang biểu diễn cho đầy nhiệt huyết và táo bạo.

Ví dụ
Carlos Cid a.k.a. CID released “Rock The House,” a single (đĩa đơn) that will keep you moving all summer long. This track is a dance banger in every sense of the word.

Now that House on the Rock is in the news again, it’s worth asking: Is this attraction greater than the sum of its seemingly infinite number of random (tình cờ, ngẫu nhiên) parts? Was Alex Jordan a prophet, a mad man, or something else?

Walnut stage manages the ‘Pavilion’ and he’s really looking forward to The Ramonas originals (Saturday 10:50pm – 11:40pm ‘Pavilion’ stage), that’s his favourite. A funny story happened on Jimmy’s stage, he’s going to tell you about his stage in a minute. The Pukes (first act on the ‘Opera House’ stage at 3:25pm – 4:10pm) went on with their Ukuleles ready to rock the house and there wasn’t one person in the audience! And they were like Hmmm I’m sure we’ve got at least one fan, and they were about to start playing and they realised that security hadn’t opened the doors, so they had to go off the stage, get the audience in which was quite big in the end.

"Walk the plank" nghĩa là gì?

Đưa nhau ra đầu cầu rồi có nhảy xuống tắm không ta? Photo by Emir Kaan Okutan from Pexels

'Walk the plank' = đi tới chỗ tấm ván.

"They probably thought I would go away quietly. Give him enough time and he will walk the plank. No (he laughs). My own wife and family said 'make them fire you'."

The 25th and 26th of July saw a good number of Instagram accounts walk the plank after the platform permanently suspended (ngưng, đình chỉ) meme accounts that had followings in their hundreds of thousands and some millions.

You'd think New York Police Department officers were being tied up and forced to walk the plank the way lawmakers and police union representatives are talking about a handful of incidents (tai nạn) in which troublemakers drenched (làm ướt) officers with buckets of water.

"A four-letter word" nghĩa là gì?

"A four-letter word" = Một từ có 4 chữ cái -> Một từ có 4 chữ cái nó mang nghĩa chửi bới, tục tĩu và xúc phạm người khác. Các bạn đoán hộ mình đó là từ chi nè? Mình ngây thơ trong sáng quá! :))

Ví dụ
The four-letter word that Duchess Meghan dropped into British Vogue that we all almost missed.

“Help.” It’s probably the hardest four-letter word to say in business. In a society where confidence rules, it can be tough to let the world know you need assistance and don’t have all the answers. Especially if the thought of asking for help terrifies (làm khiếp sợ, kinh hãi) you. Even more so if you feel like you’re “less than” for doing so.

Tingle told PW, “The thousands of librarians who have hosted me for the past three decades have never heard me say a single ‘four-letter word,’ nor witnessed any inappropriate behavior.” The author declined to elaborate (dựng lên, soạn) about the quoted phrase ‘four-letter word,’ and whether he was referring to the incident involving the booksellers, in which no swearing was alleged (khẳng định).

'Paddle your own canoe' = tự chèo thuyền của mình -> hoạt động/làm việc một cách độc lập, tự thân vận động.

Ví dụ
"It is indicative that you are in the dock today and not him. I will allow you the opportunity to paddle your own canoe."

“She loved a good saying. Her best advice was ‘love many, trust few and always paddle your own canoe’. She baked us birthday cakes, made the best Halloween costume and was a dab hand at knitting (đan len) and sewing (khâu vá).

The chirpy (hoạt bát) presenter has not let this move get her down, saying “If you start taking social media seriously it’s the wrong thing to do. While there is a lot of positivity, there is also a lot of negativity. You have to do your own thing – you have to paddle your own canoe.”

Frost wants more female jockeys (cưỡi ngựa) but even as she says so, she once again takes the discussion off on a different course, back to her obsession (ám ảnh). "They will hate me for saying it, but I didn't take too much notice of the research. You always have to paddle your own canoe," she said

"Rise to the challenge" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng có thách anh. Photo by Aziz Acharki

"Rise to the challenge" = Chấp nhận một sự thách thức -> Bạn tận dụng tối đa sức mạnh, sự quyết tâm và kỹ năng cần thiết của mình để hoàn thành thành công một nhiệm vụ rất khó khăn nào đó.

Ví dụ
The Work and Pensions Committee has called on the government to compel (thúc ép) all pension schemes (kế hoạch lương hưu) to show how they are providing value for money, as it is 'unconvinced' the industry can rise to the challenge itself.

“We don’t trust that a Democratic Party that has reneged (thất hứa, bội ước) on their responsibility, a complete dereliction (tình trạng vô chủ, bỏ rơi) of duty for the last 40 years, will actually rise to the challenge at this moment,” said Varshini Prakash, the 25-year-old executive director of the Sunrise Movement.

Every year presents itself with a new set of challenges for business leaders, whether it’s the talent gap, generational shifts, an up-and-down economy, or the usual 21st-century challenges, like technological modernization, digital transformation and globalization. In order for leaders to successfully rise to the challenge, it’s not enough to leverage (tận dụng) their skills for leading their organizations -- they must learn to lead themselves.

"Go on record" = Được lưu giữ, ghi lại -> Được ghi vào hồ sơ, cái gì đó đã được chứng thực.

Ví dụ
3 former Tesla workers go on the record with claims they were fired (bị sa thải) after falling pregnant, taking childcare leave (đơn nghỉ phép để chăm sóc con), and making a phone call.

Let's discuss the challenge of going into this record. At the time, it had been a few years since Short Bus and your partnership with Brian Liesegang had dissolved and you were now taking the lead with a new group of musicians.

More than a dozen (một tá) House Democrats have gone on record saying they would support an impeachment inquiry (cuộc thẩm vấn bôi nhọ, gièm pha) into President Trump since Robert Mueller testified about his Russia investigation on Capitol Hill last week. Some 107 House Democrats – 11 short of a majority of the caucus – now publicly support impeachment.

"Backroom boy" = Chàng trai nơi hậu trường -> Những nhà khoa học/nhà nghiên cứu mà ít được công chúng biết đến.

Ví dụ
You may remember him as the incompetent (kém cỏi, bất tài) backroom boy who played an important role in losing Theresa May her Parliamentary majority.

'Everyone knows who won. But not everyone knows how' - watch a riveting (thắt chặt) account of how Britain's history was shaped with Brexit: The Uncivil War. Witness the Emmy Award Winner and Academy Award Nominee, Benedict Cumberbatch essays the role of Dominic Cummings - a backroom boy and a disruptor (kẻ phá hoại) who 'Takes Back Control.'

Call it political compulsion (sự bắt buộc) but Mamata is now devoting more time to her party. She has been holding meetings with district leaders and counselling them on how they should check the growing influence of BJP. She has engaged election strategist Prashant Kishor, who has held several meetings with her and her nephew, Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee. He has also attended party meetings as a backroom boy.

"Break new ground" -> Đề xuất sáng kiến để cải tiến, làm những điều mà từ trước chưa từng làm được, thiết lập một kỷ lục mới hoặc là người tiên phong làm điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
The Carlow Live website continues to break new ground, and set new records, with an astonishing (ngạc nhiên) number of page views in July.

The Del Norte Senior Baseball All Star team are about to break new ground as the first Del Norte Little League team to compete at the West Regional when play kicks off in Sacramento on Thursday.

Rafael Amado spent close to 5 years at Adaptimmune looking to break new ground in the TCR field of oncology (ung thư học), going inside cells to find new targets to combat cancer (chiến đấu với ung thư). As of today, he’s making a switch to the cutting edge of one of the hottest fields in cell therapies, where he’ll be expected to take a lead role on a front-running charge at an off-the-shelf approach in CAR-T.

"In the name of heaven" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn tao có ổn không? Photo by Andre Hunter

"In the name of heaven" = Trong danh Thượng Đế -> Cụm để nhấn mạnh câu hỏi về sự nổi cáu, tức giận. Kiểu "Cái quái gì vậy?", các bạn tham khảo thêm "What the hell", "What on earth" nhá.

Ví dụ
What in the name of heaven is happening? I don’t care how angry you get, there has to be something wrong upstairs for this kind of thing to happen.

In predictable corners, moderate (ôn hòa) Muslims would be excoriated (bị phê bình gắt gao) for not speaking out more forcefully against the extremists (người cực đoan) in their midst. Foreign nations would be hit with sanctions (lệnh cấm vận, sự trừng phạt) for not doing enough to help the cause. Politicians might go so far as to call for a total ban on Muslims entering the United States “until our country’s representatives can figure out what in the name of heaven is going on.”

The time is 1987. The movie is Spaceballs. As Dark Helmet ponders his next move, his lieutenant (trung úy) has a brainwave (ý kiến hay bất chợt): "Get me a cassette of Spaceballs the movie." The videotape is produced, and soon Dark Helmet and the lieutenant are peering at a screen on which they can be seen watching themselves. "What in the name of heaven am I looking at? When does this happen in the movie?" Dark Helmet demands. "Now," answers the lieutenant. "You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now." "What happened to then?" "That's then." "When?" "Just now."

"Don’t let one's guard down" = luôn đề phòng, cảnh giác trước các mối nguy hiểm. Ngược lại, "let your guard down" nghĩa là ít đề phòng, thư giãn hơn.

Ví dụ
"This storm still has a long way to go before it leaves this state," he said. "Don't let your guard down."

He was in his second training camp with the Green Bay Packers, and he was finally starting to buy into (tin tưởng) the program and let his guard down.

The dream could act as a warning to you to be careful who you trust. Perhaps you need to get to know someone better before you let your guard down with them.

"No spring chicken" có nghĩa là không còn trẻ nữa đâu, qua cái tuổi xuân chơi bời rồi. :D

Ví dụ
Some have reacted negatively to his potential arrival because of his age. At 33, he's no spring chicken.

Los Angeles Chargers Philip Rivers is no spring chicken. The 37-year old and the Chargers have a regular-season win total of 9.5 games.

Guida is no spring chicken either. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame earlier this year as part of the class of 2019, into the Fight Wing.

Keep in mind that Daniels is no spring chicken; he turned 30 in May and spent seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers before the Lions scooped him up (hất/ đá anh ta) last week.

"Dance with death" nghĩa là gì?

"Dance with death" = khiêu vũ với thần chết -> nghĩa là làm những việc rất nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
With a fire in his heart, and on his clothes, Apollo has burst back into the public eye, and after the commitment (cam kết) to danger on every level this week, we’re waiting with bated breath (hồi hộp) for his next dance with death.

Memoirs (hồi ký) are for those raised by alcoholic (nghiện rượu) ragamuffins or those who find themselves unwittingly (vô tình) in their final years behind a cupboard (tủ bếp) or have a dead husband and sick daughter in the span of a month. The stories most often follow someone from one state to the next. Some even span across several countries. They don’t often appear to be about a boy who lived in one state his whole life, about a boy whose parents have issues unrelated to drunkenness, or about a boy whose closest dance with death was an edible snowball surrounded in dirt.

Pupils of Okwach Primary School in Muhoroni constituency, Kisumu County, are forced to perform a delicate (khéo léo) dance with death during the daily commute (đi lại) to school. "Go off the rails" nghĩa là gì?

Đường về ga ôi sao lắt léo Photo by Chait Goli from Pexels

'Go off the rails' = trệch khỏi đường ray -> đi sai hướng, hoặc (người) mất kiểm soát, hành động không đúng mực, không chấp nhận được.

Ví dụ
Given all that complexity (rắc rối), Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley expected the show to go off the rails at some point. But he thinks the second season is, if anything, even stronger than the first.

Any time a conversation enters an “open domain"—meaning it spans (kéo dài, mở rộng) multiple topics or isn’t doing a very specific thing (looking up directions, or telling you movie times, for example)—the conversation can go off the rails.

Put a bunch of Democrats on the stage and they can’t help but go off the rails: They compete (ganh đua, đấu tranh) with each other to win the favor of liberal activists, and saddle (đặt nặng) themselves with unrealistic positions that could leave a nominee (người được đề cử) vulnerable in the general election.

Obviously some of this is hindsight (nhận thức muộn màng) -- it's not like anyone expected Fulmer's career to go off the rails the way it did -- but some of it is applicable to just about any pitcher. Injuries (chấn thương) happen, and sometimes the pitcher in question can never regain their former stuff or their former consistency (bền vững, phong độ).

Trump later called Ricardel and the FLOTUS staffers into the Oval, where they presented their versions of the FLOTUS Africa trip Ricardel had tried to keep from going off the rails due to the ignorance (ngu dốt, không biết) and insensitivity (thiếu nhạy cảm) of the First Lady’s staffers.

"Ripe old age" nghĩa là gì?

"Ripe old age" = già khú đế/ đạt đến tuổi (số tuổi).

Ví dụ
BRITAIN'S oldest man Alf Smith has died at the ripe old age of 111 years and 128 days old.

Science explains that the part of our brains that handle anticipating consequences (xử lý hậu quả lường trước) is the brain’s most recent innovation, and that it doesn’t fully mature until the ripe old age of 25 years old for women, and 30 years old for men.

But in 2013, measurements (phép đo lường, tính toán) suggested HD 140283 - dubbed (gọi là) the 'Methuselah star' after the biblical figure said to have lived to the ripe old age of 969 - was about 14.5 billion years ago, based on its extremely low metal content (hàm lượng kim loại cực thấp).
