"A pretty penny" nghĩa là gì?

Anh ấy có tất cả, chỉ là không có em... Photo by Emre Alırız on Unsplash

"A pretty penny" có nghĩa là nhiều tiền. "Penny" là loại đồng xu được sử dụng tại một số nước nói tiếng Anh.

Ví dụ
While there are treasures inside that are surely worth a pretty penny, you may find a secret about this mysterious town as well.

A piece of college football history and Alabama history is in a garage in Scottsboro. It could soon be yours if you’re willing to pay (sẵn sàng trả) a pretty penny, for something a little rusty (han rỉ).

As evidenced by snaps of Jenner on the getaway (chuyến đi), she's been opting for colorful ensembles (chọn trang phục màu sắc) fit for an Italian summer holiday. Che bella! Of course, dressing like Kylie Jenner costs a pretty penny.

While Auburn will use the new logo, it’s unclear if the university will update the logo on all of its sports equipment and uniforms for the upcoming season (mùa giải tới). Despite the small change, it will cost the school a pretty penny.

"Dyed-in-the-wool" = Len được nhuộm màu -> Một điều gì đó được hình thành và thấm sâu trong lòng mãi mãi và chắc như đinh đóng cột không thể thay đổi. Ví dụ như một ý kiến hoặc một niềm tin.

Ví dụ
Downs plays Randa, a dyed-in-the-wool career gal (cô gái) who has a restraining (ngăn trở) order against her from her previous employer.

In his book, Beyond Charlottesville: Taking a Stand Against White Nationalism, released as the president told reporters on the White House lawn that he is not a racist, McAuliffe called the president “a white supremacist” (người chủ trương ưu thế của người da trắng) and a “dyed-in-the-wool, unapologetic (không biện hộ) racist.”

Traditionally, you were a dyed-in-the-wool lifer, more often than not making the slow crawl (sự bò trườn) to the top through retail and commercial banking.

Former Asante Kotoko coach CK Akonnor has revealed that he is a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the Porcupine Warriors. “What I feel is what you don’t understand… My blood is red and there is no other time to show the love for the reds than now… let’s see you in red,” Akonnor tweeted.

"Dead men's shoes" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kelly Sikkema

"Dead men's shoes" = Đôi giày của người quá cố -> Bạn chỉ được thăng chức hoặc được nắm quyền khi người lãnh đạo cấp cao qua đời và bạn sẽ được thay vào vị trí đó của họ. :(

Ví dụ
For years, getting a stand at Tefaf Maastricht was a case of waiting for dead men’s shoes. But with the launch of two New York fairs, much has changed.

We all dream of fishing the best rivers at the peak (cao điểm, đỉnh điểm) of the season but for most of us it remains a dream rather than a reality. During the majority of my fishing career it has been the case that there were rivers or at least some beats on rivers upon which fishing was simply unattainable not because it was not to let, at a price, but because demand far exceeded supply resulted in the hackneyed (nhàm) phrase “waiting for dead mens shoes” even for those with the substantial funds available to fill them.

The first aisles of the 31st edition of Tefaf Maastricht (which opened on 8 March and runs through 18 March) are testament to a changing of the guard in the Old Master world, still this fair's bread and butter. Only five years ago, getting a stand in the Mecc Maastricht was a case of waiting for dead men’s shoes—it was an old boys' club, new exhibitors a rarity (sự hiếm có). This year, there are 16 first timers among the 275 exhibitors, from antiquities specialists (Galerie Chenel and Safani Gallery) to Modern and contemporary art galleries (among them Perrotin, Massimo de Carlo and Mazzoleni).

"More than meets the eye" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Noah Grezlak on Unsplash

"More than meets the eye" = hơn những gì mắt thấy -> nghĩa là còn có những ẩn ý, khía cạnh khác mà ban đầu không nhìn ra.

Ví dụ
Demented Dimensions – Sterling Manor is home to more than meets the eye. A dimensional vortex (cơn lốc) has opened portals to terrifying realms (thế giới) where unearthly (huyền ảo) creatures (sinh vật) await.

At a glance (nhìn thoáng qua), some of Zotac's mini PCs appear rather unassuming (khiêm tốn), based on size alone. The names are sometimes a dead giveaway that there is more than meets the eye, however, as is the case with the company's new Magnus Mini Creator PC family. Living up to the "Magnus" moniker, these comparatively tiny PCs come outfitted (trang bị) with with an Intel 9th generation Core processor (bộ xử lý) and GeForce RTX graphics (cấu hình).

Karen Talbot’s garden is much more than meets the eye. It’s a medicine cabinet (tủ thuốc) featuring such natural remedies (phương thuốc) as jewelweed, which she said can be crushed up (nghiền nát) and used as a salve (thuốc bôi) for poison ivy rashes (phát ban) on the spot. It’s also a cupboard with snacks like bishop’s weed, a plant that Talbot said tastes like a “very, very strong celery.”

"Sow dragon's teeth" nghĩa là gì?

Đã đi 1/3 cuộc đời mà chưa thấy rồng phun lửa thì phí cả thanh xuân. Photo by  Mateus Campos Felipe

"Sow/plant dragon's teeth" = Gieo/trồng răng rồng -> Thực hiện hành động dự định/nhằm ngăn chặn rắc rối/xung đột/bất hòa nhưng cuối cùng lại khiến điều đó diễn ra.

Ví dụ
With Brexit continuing to engulf (nhấn chìm) and dominate politics in the UK, complacency (tính tự mãn) surrounding the fragile peace in Ireland is sowing dragon's teeth.

Smith and Marx had much to say but have been ill-served by uncritical followers. Marx complained, quoting Heinrich Heine, that "I have sown dragons' teeth and harvested fleas (con bọ chét)."

“We would like to represent Ukraine at Eurovision, and it would be an honor for us. We have invested great efforts, energy and time in it. We came to the National selection for this. But we don’t want victory at any cost. Our mission (sứ mệnh) is to unite people with our music, but not to sow the dragon's teeth. Therefore, we have a clear answer to the proposal of the National TV company – we won’t go to Eurovision-2019,” the message says.

"Shut your gob" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Noah Buscher

"Shut your gob" = Từ lóng nghĩa là "Câm mồm lại!" các bạn cẩn thận khi dùng nhá. ^^

Ví dụ
Leandro Gonzalez Pirez has publicly stated he and the Atlanta United players do not like Frank de Boer's side. He might want to shut his gob.

In particular, Leo Varadkar has been called a "dope" (chất kích thích) by The Sun, who also told him to "shut your gob." Now, it's the Mail's turn to swing for the Fine Gael leader.

My London-born mother-in-law (mẹ chồng) has been known to jokingly say “shut your gobs!” to my children. Getting smacked in the gob will make you stop gabbing (nói lém, bẻm mép).

"Sail against the wind" nghĩa là gì?

Anh không sợ đi ngược chiều gió, chỉ sợ ý chí sớm bị vụt tắt. Photo by  Pablo García Saldaña

"Sail against the wind" = Căng buồm ngược hướng gió -> Cố gắng làm mọi cách để đạt được mục tiêu bất chấp những sự phản đối và khó khăn trước mắt.

Ví dụ
Thunberg is due to set out from the UK shores mid-August and – depending on the weather – arrive in New York around two weeks later. It is hurricane season in the Atlantic, meaning the boat will be sailing against the wind and may meet rough weather. Forecasters anticipate about a dozen storms between June and November.

What led me to sail is the sense of freedom: freedom to go outside and sail against the wind, hearing the sound of water when you passing the waves, to be able to take the boat where I want, just like a child whom for the first time takes a bike and rides by himself!

"Consistency," says 12-year-old Krygsveld, in answer to the secret behind his success. "I always try to sail against the wind. In the morning it was lighter and in the afternoon the wind picked up and I was ready for that."

"Every Jack has his Jill" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Nathan Dumlao

"Every Jack has his Jill" = Nồi nào vung nấy -> Mỗi người đàn ông đều sẽ tìm được người phụ nữ lý tưởng hay chân ái của đời mình.

Ví dụ
People sometimes think that by finding the perfect person, they will find their perfect partner. They are wrong. Suitability, not perfection, is the name of the romantic game. Interestingly, two imperfect people can form a perfect romantic relationship and every Jack has his Jill.

But Princess Returning Pearl is different in that it is really romantic – unrealistic even – in terms of destiny and mindset (tư duy). Characters who do evil (cái ác) get what they deserve and every Jack has his Jill. In the end, the son and daughter of the emperor abandon their noble (quý tộc) identities and go on to live happily ever after with their spouses.

Handing an item back to its owner will increase your bond with that character. These bonds are important as they help boost your support level with that person. The higher your support level with each character, the more you get to learn about them. Plus, as you grow your relationship with students or soldiers you’ve recruited, the stronger the aid they will offer in battle becomes. Growing your support level is also essential when looking to gain a romantic partner. Anyway, every Jack has his Jill.

"Give away the store" nghĩa là gì?

Hôm nay anh bao cả quán. Photo by: Erik Mclean on Unsplash

"Give away the store" = cho đi cả cửa hàng -> nghĩa là trả giá quá cao hoặc nhượng bộ quá nhiều khi thương lượng, đàm phán hoặc giao dịch.

Ví dụ
Donald Trump did not give away the store. But more important, to the experts (chuyên gia), the collapse (sụp đổ) of the summit (hội nghị thượng đỉnh) proved that a marriage that should never have happened in the first place was over.

Agencies (cơ quan) must stick to their guns and not give away the store without compensation (đền bù). Detailed plans should only be done with pay.

They must provide answers as to whether Dallas volunteered troves of economic development (phát triển kinh tế) and infrastructure (cơ sở vật chất) information. And if they did, lawmakers must vow to jettison (vứt bỏ) this give-away-the-store approach that makes it nearly impossible for local companies to compete (cạnh tranh).

"Have a cow" nghĩa là gì?

Vui lên đi, cuộc sống có bao lâu mà hững hờ! Photo by Julian Hochgesang on Unsplash

Nếu bạn đang "have a cow" thì có nghĩa là bạn đang rất buồn hoặc đang rất tức giận, bực bội.

Ví dụ
Don’t have a cow! The Simpsons used to be a cornerstone (nền tảng) of pop culture, the show now seems antiquated (cổ xưa).

Don't have a cow if someone breaks into your house at 4 a.m. Just calmly speak to them and maybe pour them a glass of orange juice.

Lisa looks at a framed photograph of Apu inscribed (khắc), “Don’t have a cow.” Marge adds, “Some things will be dealt with at a later date,” and Lisa adds, “If at all.”

"A Benjamin's portion" nghĩa là gì?

Trở về xứ Ai-cập xưa. Photo by Fynn schmidt

A Benjamin's portion of views went to videos about video games, but even then that accounts for only 18 percent of all views.

“If people know what’s in your portfolio, then they can reverse (đảo ngược) engineer your strategy,” Brown said. Many of UTIMCO’s investments are public, however, and the fossil fuel (nhiên liệu) industry makes up the Benjamin's portion of it. Investing in fossil fuels and leasing land for oil and gas operations are practices many students have been critical of.

According to figures compiled by the USAID, trade quadrupled (gấp 4 phần) in value from 2002 to 2008, a year when it reached $100 billion, but fell back in 2017 to just $39 billion. “Petroleum products continued to account for the Benjamin's portion of AGOA imports, with a 67 percent share,” Hamilton said.

"A major player" nghĩa là gì?

Ai mới là người "chủ chốt"? Photo courtesy: Computadoras Venesystem, C.A

"A major player" = người chơi chủ chốt.

China is and will continue to be a major player on the international stage and a vital economic partner of the EU.

You may not have heard of Kobalt before, but you probably engage (dính tới) with the music it oversees (giám sát) every day, if not almost every hour. Combining a technology platform to better track ownership rights (quyền sở hữu) and royalties (tiền bản quyền) of songs with a new approach to representing musicians in their careers, Kobalt has risen from the ashes of the 2000 dot-com bubble to become a major player in the streaming music era.

The suits hope to end this scenario (kịch bản): You are booking a hotel room, thinking you’re paying $120 a night. You know there will be taxes, but you get to the end of the booking and find that besides taxes, you are being assessed (định giá) a resort fee. In some cases that may be as much as $95 a night, said Charles Leocha, co-founder of Travelers United, which advocates (ủng hộ) for travelers and has been a major player in issues involving the travel industry, including airlines.

Đau nha. Photo courtesy: PhotoArtMarie

"Flogging a dead horse" = quất con ngựa chết.

Pam's flogging a dead horse trying to organize the theatre trip. It's quite obvious that nobody's interested.

Kokela said talking to the banks on the issue of job losses was akin (na ná) to flogging a dead horse.
“In our history, the last strike we had was in 1920, and it was not about job losses. We are looking at a total shutdown (đóng cửa)," Kokela said.

He granted (cho phép) a defence application to dismiss the case after the prosecution (truy tố) ended, and said although Joubert became involved only at a late stage, “he realised that calling other witnesses would be flogging a dead horse”.

Không có sự bắt đầu làm sao có sự kết thúc? Photo by Daniel Jensen

"From go to whoa" = Từ đầu đến cuối, từ bắt đầu đến hoàn thành.

Ví dụ
“Initially when I first started I was trying to go for that old ‘filmy’ look, and I’ve sort of moved away from that because having control from go to whoa I’ve noticed that sometimes that heavily processed look isn’t great in terms of printing.”

The fact that Green managed to lead the prestigious (có uy tín) event from go to whoa is even more impressive. And that her mentor, a fellow Aussie, was there to join in the celebrations is even better. Her mentor? Well, it just happens to be the last Australian winner of a LPGA major - Karrie Webb.

Campion College were victorious (chiến thắng) in the 1 v 2 clash clash (đụng nhau, ẩu đả) Old Surfers, 57-31. Big forward Nelson Brown (16), assistant coach Paora Dewes (15) and captain Orlando Pedraza (12) gave the college three scorers in double-figures. Campion were in control 14-6, 29-15, 45-20 from go to whoa. Surfers Luke Bradley and Mercy Bristow both scored 9 points but Shane McClutchie, head coach of Campion, the competition leaders, was pleased.

"Take a rain check" nghĩa là gì?

Mưa rơi lặng thầm. Photo by  reza shayestehpour

"Take a rain check" = Kiểm tra tình hình mưa -> Từ chối một sự đề nghị hoặc một lời mời và hứa sẽ làm hoặc đi vào dịp khác.

Ví dụ
If you had plans to take the kids swimming at the Shadle Aquatic Center Thursday, you'll need to take a rain check.

“It’s only for people that have tickets for the Monday game,” Murphy said. “We will be contacting people who had tickets for the Sunday game about the process of getting a rain check or getting a refund.”

While the Dodgers won the game 5-1, slamming two homers in the ninth inning, Ryu had to take a rain check on his 12th win this season, and the 150th in his career as he left the mound (gò đất) in the seventh inning when the game was tied scoreless. “He is one of the leading pitchers in the major league baseball, who always presents a chance for his team to win. Today, this held true,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, praising Ryu’s performance against the Rockies.

"Olly olly oxen free" or "All-y all-y oxen free" = Câu khẩu hiệu được sử dụng trong các trò chơi của con nít như trốn tìm chẳng hạn, khi nghe câu này thì người chơi đang trốn có thể ra ngoài hoặc quay lại vị trí khác mà không bị thua hay bị loại ra khỏi trò chơi và cũng báo hiệu trò chơi đã hoàn toàn kết thúc.

Ví dụ
“Olly Olly Oxen Free!” With that call, kids come out of their hiding places while playing a game during summer vacation. As the 2020 Presidential election approaches, it seems like it has also called out all the Democrats who wish to replace Donald Trump.

Grossssssssssssssssssssssssss. Billings had three errors which certainly didn’t help their pitchers. Jeffy “El” NIno struck out three in two innings, Andrew “Old” McDonald struck out one in an inning, and Valentin Martinez struck out two in an inning. All of those appearances didn’t have earned runs because we’ll just talk about happy things. Jonathan “Free” Willems went 2 for 4 with a double, and James “Olly Olly Oxen” Free went 2 for 4 with the lone RBI.

He comments: “I think there are different times throughout history where relationships have meant different things. In the Stone Age, they meant survival. In the Victorian era (thời đại), they meant politics. And I think part of what they mean in our era is refuge. A bright spot of intimacy (sự mật thiết) in an otherwise intricate (rối ren, phức tạp) web of de-personalisation (không cá nhân hóa) and the mass casual insincerity among daily interactions. Olly Olly Oxen Free.”

"Cow into" hay "cow (someone) into (something) là thành ngữ chỉ hành động gây áp lực lên ai đó để khiến họ phải làm việc gì hoặc thuyết phục họ làm việc đó bằng cách khiến họ cảm thấy xấu hổ khi họ không làm.

Ví dụ
Where terrorism (chủ nghĩa khủng bố) is designed to break the spirit of society, one Londoner, Richard Angell told the BBC exactly why he won’t let cowards (kẻ nhu nhược) with knives cow him into fear.

Ghana's Immigration Department (Cục quản lý xuất nhập cảnh) prevented him from traveling outside the country on a number of occasions last week in what appears attempts (cố găng/ nỗ lực) to cow him into submission (sự phục tùng).

Takei said on Twitter that the Russians “want to cow me into silence,” adding in a later tweet, which has also since been deleted, that the actor had previously faced cyber attacks (tấn công mạng) from Russian bots (nhà bình luận chính trị nặc danh) after he criticized (chỉ trích) Russian President Vladimir Putin’s anti-LGBTQ policies.

"Cow college" là thành ngữ dùng để chỉ các trường cao đẳng, đại học mà ở đó, các ngành đào tạo được chú trọng là các ngành liên quan đến nông nghiệp hoặc ám chỉ những trường ở vùng xa xôi, hẻo lánh, ít được biết tới.

Ví dụ
The closest approximation to a cow college in the UC (University of California) system, University of California-Davis’ agricultural programs are rated second in the world in U.S. News Global Universities Rankings.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest on the college football calendar: Rivalry Week. On Saturday, Auburn takes on (đối đầu) Alabama, whose fans refer to their state rival (đối thủ) as a “cow college” and to its supporters as barners (kẻ thù).

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had a good reputation, or so the grown-ups told me, but I found it little more than a pleasantly-landscaped “cow college” (ngôi trường vùng xa xôi với những phong cảnh đẹp) or “Moo U” where social life was dominated by bowtie-wearing man-children honing (mài giũa) their alcoholism and most courses were taught by woefully (tồi tệ) unprepared, underpaid teaching assistants.

"Pour heart out to" nghĩa là gì?

Những tâm sự mỏng bên người thương. Photo by Kelly Sikkema

"Pour (one's) heart out to someone" = Trải lòng mình với ai -> Chia sẻ những suy nghĩ tình cảm thật lòng và sâu sắc nhất của mình với ai khác.

Ví dụ
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has poured his heart out on the sudden demise (sự băng hà, thoái vị) of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after the veteran Congress leader passed away at the age of 81. Reacting to her death, Akshay said that the three-term chief minister had ‘effectively changed the face of Delhi during her tenure (nhiệm kỳ).’

If you are caught by your significant other, tell him you didn't know what else to do and you were in a really deep hole you felt you couldn't come out of. You tend to run from your emotions, but now you are forced to deal with them face to face. Take a deep breath and finally pour your heart out to him. Here's to hoping he understands.

"God's given you a story. You need to tell that story and not worry about who you're going to offend, don't worry about who you're going to try and attract, God will do all that, he's in that business. You've got to be honest to your story and you've got to pour your heart out and do everything you can to tell that story," said Heavener.

“Part of the application process is ‘tell me why you think you’re the best candidate for the award’ and that’s when they really got to kind of tell their story and pour their heart out about their history in welding and why they like it what they want to do in the future.”

"Dollars to donuts" nghĩa là gì?

Quả bóng tròn tròn là quả bóng xinh xinh Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

Cụm từ thường đi kèm 'bet dollars to donuts' = cá tiền với mấy cái bánh -> nhấn mạnh sự đảm bảo, chắc chắn (chuyện gì sẽ xảy ra)

Ví dụ
And I’ll bet you dollars to donuts had a smaller man ripped off (bắt chước) the same move Fifita did – that being a ‘big’ front-on shot on a bloke moments after he’s passed the ball – little man cops a penalty. Stays on the field. Betcha.

Either way, I’d bet dollars to donuts that each of these UNC newcomers outperforms (làm tốt hơn) their respective ranking on this list. We’ll find out beginning in early November when the Tar Heels kick off the season against Notre Dame at the Dean Smith Center.

Hyundai on Monday introduced the 2020 Sonata Hybrid. It looks just about the same as its gas-only siblings, but there are a few key differentiators. There's a fresh grille (lưới tản nhiệt) that's exclusive to hybrid models, in addition to a specific rear spoiler and some cool alloy (hợp kim) wheels. We haven't seen the interior (nội thất bên trong) yet, but we'd bet dollars to donuts that it's pretty much the same as the standard Sonata.

"Sing off the same songbook" nghĩa là gì?

Đồng điệu cả tâm hồn lẫn thể xác. Photo by  Jo Jo

"Sing off/from the same songbook" = Hát chung một quyển bài hát -> Có chung hiểu biết với ai về điều gì, nói đồng quan điểm với ai về điều gì đặc biệt ở nơi công chúng.

Ví dụ
“They are one of the best acoustic roots-bluegrass bands out there. They are not playing from the same songbook of Flatt and Scruggs. They write their own music.”

This requirement made sense to be placed in the definition of “Done” because it applied broadly. In fact we had multiple Scrum Teams working on this product, and they shared one common definition of “Done”. All the Scrum Teams had to be “singing from the same songbook”.

It’s pretty rare to get all the media in our land singing from the same songbook. But if the Australian Federal Police raids on journalists this week achieved one thing, it was to unite everyone from Alan Jones to the Green Left Weekly.

"Carrot and stick" nghĩa là gì?

Thân lừa ưa nặng Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'Carrot and stick' = cà rốt và gậy.

And with that in mind we face the great change that our society must make in order to de-carbonise ourselves. It is, for instance, possible to change the public’s behaviour to a more environmentally friendly way of life, using both carrot and stick.

But because the far-left elements of the Democratic Party will do anything to regain power, they attempt to make Trump’s “carrot and stick” policy look like a negative. President Trump is dealing with belligerent countries (các nước tham chiến) that possess or are trying to develop nuclear weapons that can be used against America, and instead of the liberals standing with our President, they focus on trying to destroy him. It is they who are emboldening (khuyến khích) our enemies — not Trump.

Beijing is hardly offering a carrot and stick approach; the current choice is between either a longer or a shorter stick. The short stick approach allows Hong Kong time to sort out this mess, accompanied by heavy doses of police violence accompanied with lashings (nhiều) of punishment – a word used frequently by Beijing’s mouthpieces. The long stick is significantly more brutal (tàn ác, hung bạo), it can be wielded (vận dụng) by the PLA and once that’s done all bets are off. One Country Two Systems, what remains of it, can be consigned to a deep hole in the ground.

"Rip-snorting mad" nghĩa là gì?

Muốn hít khói à? Photo by Alex Mihai C

"Rip-snorting mad" = Tức đến xịt khói -> Vô cùng phẫn nộ và tức điên lên.

Ví dụ
Other passengers who take the bus say they’ve seen people turned away for not having bus fare, but it never resulted in physical violence (bạo lực). “They usually get rip-snorting mad or the bus driver just tells them to get off (xuống xe),” Tony Broomfield said.

The father of the one of the Parkland shooting victims has urged the city of El Paso to “get rip-snorting mad” in the aftermath of the Walmart shooting that left 22 dead, saying: “Get out there, scream, shout, do something.”

THE DIVIDE ISN’T ONLY between the Group of 5 and Power 5. There’s a divide in the MW, too. Boise State paid its 11-man football staff (head coach and 10 assistants) a combined $3.995 million last season compared to Nevada’s $1.891 million. That’s more than double the investment. So, while I get when Wolf Pack fans get rip-snorting mad when Nevada loses to Boise State, including a 31-27 defeat last season, sometimes you get what you pay for. Money doesn’t always lead to wins, though. Colorado State’s staff made $3.742 million last season but went 3-9, including a 49-10 loss to Nevada. Wyoming’s staff made $3.336 million and didn’t reach a bowl.

"Chink in armour" nghĩa là gì?

'Chink in armour' = khe hở của bộ áo giáp (về mặt hình tượng thì nó giống vớt Gót chân Achilles) -> điểm yếu nhỏ nhưng có thể gây thiệt hại, bất lợi không ngờ tới.

Ví dụ
Coastal security (an ninh vùng biển) continues to be a chink in armour. A comprehensive plan with a three-tier security was drawn up. The Indian Navy and the Coast Guard components are broadly in position, but the third tier of marine police is still struggling to take shape. A National Maritime Authority is also yet to be set up.

The leggings and sports bra together aren’t the cute matching set that I’m used to, so I’m also feeling that tiny bit less confident (tự tin). My workout doesn’t necessarily suffer for it, but my mindset does, and that’s the entire reason I go to the gym: to clear my mind and feel strong. Ultimately, I feel like there’s a chink in my armour and I can’t help but feel uncomfortable throughout my session.

Coca-Cola didn’t renew its contract for Thums Up with Salman Khan for the first time since 2012 and signed on Ranveer Singh instead, who symbolises youth. Besides this, Khan was earlier replaced as brand endorser (người chuyển nhượng) of Revital by former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. What works for Khan is that he reaches out to the hinterland easily, but his chink in armour is his relevance among urban audiences and millennials.
