"A tough pill to swallow" nghĩa là gì?

Thuốc đắng dã tật. Photo by: Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

"A tough pill to swallow" = viên thuốc khó nuốt -> nghĩa là sự việc, thông tin gây khó chịu nhưng không thể tránh khỏi hoặc buộc phải chấp nhận.

Ví dụ
Jamie Drysdale said they played a good game but ultimately came up short and admits (thừa nhận) the silver is a tough pill to swallow. He also gives kudos (danh tiếng) to opposing (phản đối) goaltender Yaroslav Askarov who shut them down when it mattered most.

For the man himself, 2019 was shaping up as a crucial (quyết định) year in his career. With a return to England locked in for 2020, Widdop had planned on finishing his time in Australia on a winning note. Those plans were scuppered (đắm chìm) at Suncorp Stadium in March and he admits it's been a tough pill to swallow as he watched his team struggle (gặp khó khăn) throughout the year.

Black said it’s a tough pill to swallow. Maurice Freeman lives just a short distance from the facility. He said he couldn’t do anything but watch as his dentist (nha sĩ) and friend’s business went up in flames. “My heart goes out to him. Not very many people like dentists. I definitely (hoàn toàn) don’t, but I need him. He’s a great guy in this community," said Freeman. A great guy that Freeman said the community wants to see return to his home office.

"Not my dog" nghĩa là gì?

Gì vô duyên dzậy chời! Quen biết gì đâu mà hun người ta. Photo by João Victor Xavier on Unsplash

"Not my dog" hay "It’s not my dog" là những cách nói có ý nghĩa tương đương câu nói quen thuộc mà chúng ta hay dùng hàng ngày "It’s not my problem." ("Đó không phải là chuyện của tôi." hay nói thẳng ra là "Tôi không quan tâm.")

Ví dụ
It is not my dog if you do not like me. I am just going to keep being me.

I don't waste time on it. It's truly their problem. If they don't like me, that's their problem — it's not my dog; it doesn't exist in my life.

My concern is, he is coming around again needing rides to school. I feel it is not my dog. This has led to some heavy discussions with my husband.

"As tough as leather" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Mitch Lensink on Unsplash

"As tough as leather" = cứng như da -> nghĩa là có sức mạnh, vững chắc về thân thể, ý chí, không dễ bị bệnh hay tổn thương.

Ví dụ
The SR4 riding jeans from Bull-it are available in different styles, and in both men’s and women’s cuts. The denim (vải bông chéo) material isn’t quite as tough as leather, but Bull-it claims its jeans offer an abrasion resistance (chống trầy) at about 89.6% that of cowhide. The jeans accept knee and hip CE-approved armor (sold separately) and are treated with a water repellent (chống nước) silicone finish.

There’s probably not much O’Keefe has’t seen or heard. His 41-year coaching career includes stops at every level. His skin is as tough as leather after dealing with everyone from high school parents to fans in the stands to media mopes like myself who have roasted (chế nhạo) him in columns.

Poorly made gizzards (mề chim) can be as tough as leather, but these are treated with respect, so the texture (kết cấu) is pleasantly chewy without becoming a workout.

"Feel puny" nghĩa là gì?

"Feel puny" -> Cảm thấy đau ốm, yếu ớt.

Ví dụ
The wagons also are equipped with ATV tires for smoother rides. (Young or old, who enjoys being jostled (tranh giành, xô đẩy) around when you're feeling puny?).

If contemplating the vast size of astronomical (thiên văn học) objects makes you feel rather puny and insignificant, then this new discovery will make you feel positively infinitesimal (rất nhỏ, vi phân).

When I was first diagnosed (chẩn đoán), doctors told me I needed six months of chemo. I said, “Bring it on. Six months? That’s the timeframe to prepare for a marathon.” I made a goal to qualify for the 1996 marathon trials while finishing my chemo. Back then, I’d be feeling puny for five days, then good eight or nine days, and I’d go run 10 or 12 miles when I was feeling good.

"Dull as dishwater" nghĩa là gì?

Ôi dào, chén bát cứ để đó, đi chơi đã! Tiền nhiều để mà làm gì? Photo by Scott Umstattd on Unsplash

"Dull as dishwater" (xám xịt như nước rửa bát đĩa) là thành ngữ chỉ cảm xúc chán nản, không thấy có gì là thú vị. Thành ngữ này thường được dùng để miêu tả về con người.

Ví dụ
It was then agreed by all at the bar, and me when I tried it, this beer is as dull as dishwater and similar in appearance.

In a leadership campaign that was as dull as dishwater, where most of the country zoned out after the first televised debate, our new Prime Minister made three key pledges (cam kết).

Despite having an open world at your disposal (theo ý của bạn), the town of Uglyville is as dull as dishwater. Sure, it’s initially quite inviting: its patchwork (vá lại) floors, pastel-coloured (màu xanh lá cây) buildings and craft-inspired (ý tưởng thủ công) visuals make a nice backdrop. But as you move around you’ll realise it’s all exactly the same.

"Feel like a new person" = Cảm thấy như một con người mới -> Bạn cảm thấy trong người được tươi mới và tràn đầy sức sống sau khi trải qua một sự mệt mỏi hay căng thẳng hoặc đơn giản sau khi bạn mặc một bộ đồ mới.

Ví dụ
MAN LOSES 450 POUNDS AFTER DISCOVERING PASSION FOR RUNNING: 'I FEEL LIKE A NEW PERSON'.

Stacey Solomon has said she is feeling “like a new person” after a mini-makeover. The Loose Women panellist welcomed son Rex with partner Joe Swash last month and has been open about the reality of life with a newborn, including her struggle with breastfeeding (cho con bú) and the fact she was worried about going outside with the baby.

Zito had just won the American League Cy Young Award at the young age of 24. He should've been the happiest person in the world. But instead, he felt empty. Now, 17 years later, the former A's and Giants pitcher feels like a brand new person.

"Mickey mouse" nghĩa là gì?

Thiên đường của bao tuổi thơ. Photo by James Hartono

"Mickey mouse" = Chuột Mickey -> Chỉ điều tầm thường, không quan trọng.

Ví dụ
However, unfortunately for Bray Wyatt's younger brother, his run on the main roster (bảng phân công) would see him become a mickey mouse jobber.

“I never said he was Mickey Mouse,” Hansen said. “What I said was a throwaway (truyền đơn, thông báo) line or something said in jest. I just said 'well we can’t because he’s in Australia coaching Australia'. You can make a big thing out of it if you want or you can take it for what it was – something in jest. I’ve got plenty of respect for what Michael has done and [it is] end of the story really.”

OK, it's been a while since I've had a nice, long rant. I'm in the mood, and you're in for a real treat. Have you ever heard of the so-called cosmic (vũ trụ) calendar? This is a frequently used device to illustrate just how small and mickey mouse and inconsequential our lives here on Earth are in the grand scheme of things.

"Go off at half-cock" nghĩa là gì?

Chỉ cần được đến gặp em là anh sẽ bất chấp không gian và thời gian. Photo by Jon Grogan on Unsplash

"Go off at half-cock" là thành ngữ chỉ hành động hấp tấp, vội vàng và thường là dẫn đến thất bại.

Ví dụ
Almost for sure, though, it will go off at half-cock. Verkaik recalls the disasters that befell (xảy ra) the British army, largely led by former (cựu) public schoolboys, in two world wars and contrasts them with the better performance of the royal and merchant (thương gia) navies (hải quân), in which many more officers were educated at state schools.

"Operation (cuộc hành quân) Forto" appeared (dường như) to go off at half-cock, before the ringleaders (tay súng) had won the unequivocal (không lập lờ, rõ ràng, dứt khoát) backing (hậu thuẫn) of key generals. The officers may have been hoping to capture Isaias, who was due to attend a meeting at the Ministry of Information but rescheduled at the last moment.

Fed up (chống lại) with their attitude, Chapman took early retirement in 1973, and his book appeared just in time to excite Margaret Thatcher and those around her as they prepared for government. But he presciently forecast that her efficiency drive (nỗ lực) in Whitehall would go off at half-cock, as the forces ranged against (chống lại) it were powerful and devious (quanh co).

"Bring sand to the beach" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by xiaokang Zhang on Unsplash

"Bring sand to the beach" (mang cát ra biển) ý nói đến hành động dư thừa, không cần thiết. Câu thành ngữ thường được dùng trong ngữ cảnh mang cái gì đó đến một nơi mà đã phong phú/ đã có thứ đó rồi.

Ví dụ
When he told David Hasselhoff – his co-host on America's Got Talent back in 2007 – that he was bringing me along, the Knight Rider star sighed (thở dài), shook his head and said: "Man, you don't bring sand to the beach."

I can actually remember several people advising me, “Not to bring sand to the beach” before I left to start my first year at UGA. There's an assumption (nhận định) that a relationship in high school lacks a sort of substance (vật chất) and authenticity (sự thành thật).

According to state law, possession of half an ounce (đơn vị đo khối lượng) or less of weed is punishable by a $250 fine and up to one year in prison. "The oft-repeated wisdom on the message boards is 'Don't bring sand to the beach,' i.e., you'll be able to easily find what you need once you get there, so don't risk traveling with it," says Tracey-Miller.

Tốt nghiệp đại học là một bước đệm quan trọng để tiến tới thành công!
Photo by Chelsea Audibert on Unsplash

"Means to an end" có thể hiểu là phương tiện, cách thức, bước đệm để bạn có thể tới đích, hoặc đạt được điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
I started my career as a music journalist for Melody Maker. My first novel was about Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers. It was always only a means to an end to writing fiction.

Technology also provides a means to an end for South Africa, as the public cloud alone (đám mây công cộng là một mô hình dịch vụ dựa trên nền tảng điện toán đám mây, được cung cấp bởi 1 bên thứ ba đến người dùng qua mạng internet công cộng.) is expected to generate (cung cấp) 112 000 new jobs in South Africa by 2022, and forecasted to reach $500bn by 2020.

In the early days of the NFL, college football was king and playing professionally was not something most players aspired (khát khao) to do. By planting its flag in large cities, embracing television exposure (đón nhận truyền thông trên ti-vi) and playing a more entertaining style, the NFL surged in popularity (nổi tiếng) in the middle of the 20th century and turned college football into a means to an end for many players.

"Like a bolt out of the blue" nôm na có thể dịch là "Như 1 tia sét phát ra trên nền trời xanh" (bolt là tia sét) Thành ngữ này ám chỉ trạng thái bất ngờ, không lường trước được, không được cảnh báo.

Ví dụ
"It was like a bolt out of the blue. I am a fan of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and dreamed of visiting the cathedral (nhà thờ lớn) with my husband. Now, it's ruined," she said.

It was like a “bolt out of the blue.” That was the reaction of Alan Brazil, a presenter for British radio’s talkSport, to the news of Wayne Rooney’s planned exit from D.C. United to English Championship team Derby County.

NEWS of Mark Durkan's switch south (chuyển sang phía nam) to contest (tranh cử) the European Parliament elections (bầu cử Nghị Viện) for Fine Gael came like a bolt out of the blue in the SDLP's Derry heartland (trung tâm). But while party veterans (thành viên lâu năm) appeared to have no advance knowledge of the move, there had been indications (dấu hiệu) of a growing relationship between Mr Durkan and Fine Gael.

"A penny saved is a penny earned" nghĩa là gì?

Tiết kiệm để có đồng ra đồng vào chứ nhỉ? Photo by Katie Harp - Pinterest Manager on Unsplash

"A penny saved is a penny earned" = để dành một xu coi như là kiếm được một xu, theo đúng nghĩa đen luôn.

Ví dụ
As Ben Franklin once said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” To help your kids learn to manage their money, it’s important for them to understand the difference between wants and needs.

Since before this country’s birth, Americans were urged (thôi thúc) to save their money to ensure their future. A penny saved is a penny earned, as Ben Franklin put it. Unfortunately, that credo (tôn chỉ) went out the window long ago.

During the Depression (cuộc Suy thoái) of the 1930s business at this discount store boomed. It was sold and renamed "Ben Franklin 5Cent and $1" in 1958. Its name suggestive (gợi lên) of one of Ben Franklin's quotes, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

"Pennies from heaven" nghĩa là gì?

"Pennies from heaven" chính là tiền từ trên trời rơi xuống đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
Pennies from heaven when coins scatter (rải xu) as part of town’s historic charter ceremony (lễ hiến chương lịch sử).

Gronk saying to Drew Brees, "Yeah, I'm coming back…" ? Pennies from heaven even if there was no context around his words.

The other 10 percent would go to an acceptable charity organization either here or in Spain. So, you can see why it’s a little shocking that I’m still writing. I should be devoting all my time to the appropriate response to these pennies from heaven.

We are looking for help to set up a Facebook page with a link to Just Giving. In addition, we are exploring the 'Pennies from heaven scheme (mưu)' where the pennies from an interested person’s monthly pay cheque could be donated directly to the charity (tổ chức từ thiện).

"Penny-ante" nghĩa là gì?

Nên cược nhiều hay ít đây? Photo courtesy Wendy Panganiban

"Penny-ante" có nghĩa là không quan trọng, đáng khinh, không có giá trị. Trong trò poker, "penny-ante" nghĩa là đặt cược một đồng xu -> rất thấp.

Ví dụ
The Environmental Protection Agency has seen both: Trump’s first administrator (quản trị viên) was Scott Pruitt, whose zeal (lòng nhiệt thành) for increasing pollution was exceeded only by his penny-ante corruption.

Recent raids (các cuộc tấn công gần đây) on Ontario organized crime groups (nhóm tội phạm có tổ chức) revealed they were using casinos in that province in exactly the same way they do here — but the scale there is proportionately penny ante.

The government has been reminded often enough that the failure to punish the corrupt (thất bại trong trừng phạt tham nhũng), from penny-ante extortionists (kẻ tham nhũng/ tống tiền) to large-scale plunderers (cướp đoạt), is the biggest reason for the persistence of corruption in this country.

"A black eye" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Michael Mims on Unsplash

"A black eye" = con mắt đen, từ này nghĩa đen là mắt thâm quầng (do đánh nhau, hoặc đơn giản là do tô điểm/trang điểm quá đậm); ngoài ra, nghĩa (bóng) là nhược điểm, vết nhơ trong danh tiếng/thanh danh của một người.

Ví dụ
“That’s extremely disappointing (thất vọng) to me,” said City Commissioner (đại biểu) Curtis Richardson. “If he knew from the very start that there were things that might have been illegal (bất hợp pháp) that occurred (xảy ra) that he would have been forthright (thẳng thắn) early on and not put the city and the community through all of this. “It really has been a black eye on the city of Tallahassee," said Richardson, the only sitting commissioner who served alongside Maddox. "He could have saved us all of that for almost two years.”

Given the state of this Tigers’ rebuild -- combined with the notion that Matthew Boyd, Nicholas Castellanos, and Shane Greene’s value will never be this high -- if Al Avila and company don’t get something done by 4 p.m. Wednesday, it’s a black eye on the organization (tổ chức) and an unforgiveable lapse (sai sót).

The episode was hardly a black eye. But, just as Kerry’s smoothie contributed (cống hiến) to questions about the Massachusetts senator’s connection to regular folk, Thompson’s less-than-enthusiastic embrace of the time-honored Iowa tradition clashed with the down-home Southerner he often portrayed as an actor.

"Take care of the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves" = hãy lo cho những đồng xu rồi những đồng bảng (Anh) sẽ tự lo lấy.Pennies số nhiều của penny (đồng xu), "pound" là đồng bảng Anh. Cách nói này khuyên bạn nên tiết kiệm và cẩn thận không phung phí tiền bạc.

Ví dụ
When she was alive, my nana’s top financial tip (mẹo tài chính hàng đầu) was to “take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”.

After the Sunrise interview, Sam and Kochie may have guffawed (cười rộ lên) about Serina sharing a teabag with her husband Neil Hadley to save a few cents, but she is unashamedly an adherent (tuân theo) to the old adage (ngạn ngữ xưa), "watch the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves".

If you’re a business that uses PayPal, you can apply for a lower merchant rate (tỷ giá hối đoái thương mại). The lower rate may only be a little lower, at around 1.9%, but when you add this up over time it soon becomes a pretty penny, which makes it well worth considering (đáng xem xét). Take care of the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves, as they say.

"Worth every penny" nghĩa là gì?

"Worth every penny" = đáng đồng tiền bát gạo

Ví dụ
If Katherine and Michelle Plouffe qualify for (đủ điều kiện tham gia) the Tokyo Olympics, they will have done so on their own dime (tự dùng tiền của mình làm). But the Edmonton twins say it will have been worth every penny.

According to the Sallie Mae report "How America Pays For College 2019," a survey conducted in partnership with (hợp tác với) research-company (công ty nghiên cứu) Ipsos found that seven in 10 parents and students say the cost of college today is either appropriately priced, a bargain (món hời), or worth every penny.

Do you feel so tired some days that it’s like you never slept at all the night before? Well the insanely popular (cực nổi tiếng) Philips HF3520 Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock might be just what you need. It wakes you up slowly with special lighting that simulates (làm giống) a sunrise, and there are so many people out there who swear by it. It’s worth every penny at its normal $140 retail price.
