"High noon" nghĩa là gì?

Đoạn này khó rồi đây!! Photo by: Eerik Sandstrom on Unsplash

"High noon" = đỉnh trưa -> nghĩa là thời khắc quan trọng nhất của cuộc đối đầu hoặc cuộc thi đấu, khủng hoảng. Có thể hiểu theo nghĩa khác là giai đoạn đỉnh cao của một thời điểm nhất định.

Ví dụ
Peace is the way to live and die, work and play, lead and follow, agree and disagree. At high noon throughout the world, hundreds of others — people probably much like those gathered in San Antonio — were part of a virtual (ảo) 24-hour global prayer meeting. It was somehow reassuring (trấn an). They prayed (cầu nguyện) that compassion (long trắc ẩn) could be the means to end violence (bạo lực). They prayed for us to lead by example, because children learn from our words and actions. They prayed for those whose lives have been lost.

It was high noon after a three-hour practice that required three water breaks, two of them indoors (trong nhà). The heat index was 102 degrees. Nick Foles was running sprints: 50-yard gassers, 10 times, full speed, full pads. Alone.

I may not be the most regular player of Rainbow Six Siege, but Ubisoft’s twitchy team shooter always brings me back with its special events (sự kiện đặc biệt). Today’s Showdown event is an old western three-on-three scenario set in an all new map, Fort Truth. Pump shotguns and magnum revolvers only, befitting (phù hợp) the reskinned and old-timey operators. While not quite as ambitious (tham vọng) as their alien mutant invasion (xâm lăng) event (which has spun off into its own game), I’m expecting a fun, messy close-quarters shootfight. If your trigger finger is itchy (ngứa ngáy), there’s a trailer below waiting for high noon.

'Out of action' -> (máy móc) ngưng hoạt động, (người) không hoạt động được như bình thường vì bị ốm hoặc bị thương

Ví dụ
MESUT OZIL and Sead Kolasinac are out of action indefinitely after the pair were caught in the middle of a North London gang battle.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that goalkeeper Alisson will be out of action for the next few weeks after a calf injury forced the Brazilian off during the 4-1 victory over Norwich on Friday.

Middle-order batsman Suresh Raina will be out of action for a few months after he underwent a second knee surgery (phẫu thuật) a few days back. The UP-batsman said that it was a tough decision but had to be taken because he was facing too much discomfort (lo lắng).

"Off the grid" nghĩa là gì?

Sống xa "điện" không dễ dàng. Image by Nicole Köhler from Pixabay

Sylvia Wilson and her now late husband Rod wanted to prove (chứng minh) a point when they decided (quyết định) to live off the grid and convert (chuyển) their property (tài sản) to solar power (năng lượng mặt trời).

Importantly, installing (lắp đặt) solar panels (tấm năng lượng mặt trời) on your roof (mái nhà) does not mean that you’ve gone off the grid. Most solar energy systems (hệ thống) are not designed to consistently (liên tục, đều đặn) generate (tạo ra) enough electricity to be a home’s only power source, which is why the vast majority (phần lớn) of solar homeowners maintain a connection with their utility (tiện ích) company.

We all picture celebrities (người nổi tiếng) to be living in lavish (lãng phí) mansions (lâu đài, biệt thự) on the hills (đồi) of Hollywood, but many, like the ones below, opt (chọn) for a home that is close to the simple (đơn giản) and regular (bình thường) life. You may be surprised at how many celebrities have explicitly (dứt khoát) chosen to stay away from the Hollywood lifestyle, hence the term, “off the grid.”

As Pam Grier celebrates (ăn mừng) 70, she finds peace (yên bình) off the grid. Pam Grier’s role as the owner (chủ) of a hardware (phần cứng) store in rural (nông thôn) Nebraska in the ABC sitcom “Bless This Mess” isn’t a complete departure (sự rời bỏ) for the film legend: She lives in rural Colorado and has spent much of her life on ranches (trang trại chăn nuôi) to find serenity (sự thanh bình) from Hollywood life.

"Have a memory like a sieve" nghĩa là gì?

Nắm tay nhau thời trẻ, dắt tay nhau lúc về già Photo by Noelle Otto from Pexels

'Have a memory like a sieve' = có trí nhớ như cái sàng/cái rây -> người trí nhớ kém, nhanh quên

Ví dụ
Do you have a memory like a sieve or do you never forget anything, like an elephant? Whatever you capacity (khả năng) for remembering things there is always a good way to test it.

I have a memory like a sieve, so I’ve forgotten specifics about the books and comics I’ve read in recent years. And I admit, I completely missed out on some of the comics issues and young reader titles.

Even if you have a memory like a sieve, it is on record that the Honourable Minister for education recently attended an occasion in Gbongan when Dr. Babalakin dedicated an edifice (dinh thự) in honour of his father in Gbongan Village.

But practically speaking, it allows my girlfriend and I to always have a list, be it shopping, things to get for the house, or things for our daughter. The ability to have everything synced (đồng bộ) on both our phones is a godsend (may mắn), as I have a memory like a sieve.”

"Hunt where the ducks are" nghĩa là gì?

Cùng đi săn vịt nào!! Photo by: Sebastian Pociecha on Unsplash

"Hunt where the ducks are" = săn vịt đúng nơi chúng ở -> nghĩa là theo đuổi mục tiêu, kết quả ở đúng nơi dễ đạt được.

Ví dụ
As he prepared for his own run for president, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater likewise tried to bring white southern conservatives (Đảng bảo thủ) into the Republican fold. But rather than proposing (đề xuất) a partnership between the South and the Northeast, Goldwater wanted to connect southern Democrats with libertarians (người theo chủ nghĩa tự do) and conservatives in the Southwest and West. In a 1961 speech to southern Republicans in Atlanta, Goldwater famously declared (tuyên bố) that the GOP should “hunt where the ducks are” by writing off “the Negro vote” and pursuing southern whites instead.

Most Democrats have a policy agenda they’ll campaign on, including tax hikes, Medicare-for-all and pro-choice judicial appointments — pretty much what they always want — but they’re going to hunt where the ducks are. The more time Republicans spend explaining that they aren’t racists (phân biệt chủng tộc) and sexists, the more often voters hear “Republicans,” “racist” and “sexist” in the same sentence. Democrats learned at least one thing from Ronald Reagan: If you’re explaining, you’re losing.

Of course, the main benefit (lợi ích) to the publishing venue is, fittingly, a social one–which fits his job. “You hunt where the ducks are,” Nunokawa told the Chronicle. “Facebook is where my students are.” The feature on Nunokawa was the cover of the most recent Princeton Alumni Weekly. It featured a straight-ahead close-up of Nunokawa’s face, across which was written: “YOU CAN’T WRITE 3,200 ESSAYS (bài văn) ON FACEBOOK WITHOUT MAKING A FEW FRIENDS.”

'Lend someone one's ear' = cho ai mượn tai -> tập trung lắng nghe ai nói.

Ví dụ Friends, Vulcans, Starfleet officers, lend me your ear tips (mẹo)!

As for you, dear visitor, lend me your ear while I point you to the best restaurants, bars, hotels, outdoor adventures, and things to do while you’re in Jackson Hole.

It's like another family that I can call at any time. I feel like I can call any of you at any time and you would lend me your ear. That's a really good feeling. You don't get that with many people in life, really.

Be sure to lend me your ear and also voice your thoughts in the comments section right below. Just remember that this is pure speculation (nghiên cứu), and I claim to have no backstage (hậu trường) knowledge of why Black actually missed out.

"Hunt high and low" nghĩa là gì?

Cùng đi săn trứng Phục sinh nào!! Photo by: Bee Felten-Leidel on Unsplash

"Hunt high and low" = tìm trên cao và dưới thấp -> nghĩa là tìm/truy lùng kiếm ai hoặc thứ gì khắp mọi nơi.

Ví dụ
The Flower and Garden Festival adds an Easter twist with a scavenger hunt. Pick up a clue (gợi ý) map and hunt high and low in the World Showcase for hidden eggs decorated (trang trí) to resemble (tương đồng) Disney characters. Return your completed clue guide for a special prize.

“In 1987, I had two young children and was pregnant (mang bầu) with my son, James. We had come back to the UK from living abroad and I was a full-time mum. I didn’t want to miss out on my children growing up, so I considered (cân nhắc) starting my own business. Party Pieces was as a result of my personal need (nhu cầu) for my own children’s parties. You had to hunt high and low to find suitable party supplies. I found suppliers and put up notices in my daughters’ playgroup that said ‘Planning a Party?’ and started getting orders. My memories of those early days are very vivid (rõ ràng),” she said.

We also share a love of chocolate. When I was six, I would run down to his restaurant – we lived upstairs (trên tầng) – to find the industrial-sized chocolate he used. I would hunt high and low and realise (nhận ra) he had hidden it. I finally matched my father when I looked inside the oven and there it was.

"Like a hole in the head" nghĩa là gì?

Đấy gặp nhau nói chuyện bỏ cái điện thoại đi có phải vui không? Photo by ELEVATE from Pexels

'Like a hole in the head' = giống như một lỗ hổng trong đầu -> hoàn toàn không cần/không có nhu cầu hoặc không sử dụng cho cái gì.

Ví dụ
Jeremy Corbyn shouldn’t fall into the trap of giving Boris Johnson an election. Unless, that is, he is pretty confident of winning it and, on the basis of the latest polls, Labour needs an election like a hole in the head.

To tell the truth, I think the design is awful. In the true meaning of that word it's a heavy, non-descript piece of international-style architecture. I would have thought we need another centre - in addition to the North Wharf project – like a hole in the head.

“Turkey needs another election campaign (chiến dịch bầu cử) like a hole in the head,” Bluebay’s Ash said, adding that completing the S-400 purchase would almost certainly trigger U.S. sanctions (trừng phạt). “In my twenty years covering Turkey, I have not felt this concerned.”

'Like a bat out of hell' = giống như con dơi phi ra khỏi nơi tối tăm -> rất nhanh, bất ngờ.

Ví dụ
My sister thought she’d pass her driver’s test easily, despite minimal practice. She could drive, that was for sure, usually like a bat out of hell.

Even if you leave New York City Center after this piece of theatrical (sân khấu) madness like a bat out of hell gulping (chìm, nuốt chửng) at the night air, you may do so with a smile on your face—a baffled, stunned one, but still a smile.

I was ready to take off like a bat out of hell, sprang forward by the electric motor. I pedaled (đạp bàn đạp) once and the bike crept forward. The speedometer read two, three mph. Pedaled again, same thing. This is where I learned what pedal-assist means: you have to keep pedaling to get the boost.

"A fool and his money are soon parted" nghĩa là gì?

Mua em luôn này anh gì ơi :P Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'A fool and his money are soon parted' = tên ngốc và tiền của anh ta sớm muộn cũng phải chia tay -> những người mua bán mà không có cân nhắc; bán cho kẻ ngốc thì dễ dàng

Ví dụ
Money makes the mare (ngựa cái, tình huống khó khăn) run and he who pays the piper (chi phí mọi khoản) calls the tune. But there are also dangers, for it's said in the Bible (kinh thánh) that the love of money is the root of all evil, plus a fool and his money are soon parted.

There are also 39.7 million Americans who live in poverty (nghèo đói), according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau. It’s the pressure people feel to appear wealthy that drives so many of us to spend above our means — there’s a saying my grandpa always repeated: “A fool and his money are soon parted.”

It's rather hard to feel bad for Trump supporters, in general — but with that said, no one deserves to be fleeced (lừa đảo) of their hard-earned money. And while it can easily be argued that they ask for it, in a way — a fool and his money are soon parted, and all that — it's important to remember that stealing is wrong, no matter who does it and for what purpose.

"Keep your own counsel" nghĩa là gì?

'Keep (one's) own counsel' = giữ ý định/bàn bạc cho riêng mình (ai đó) -> giữ bí mật, không để lộ suy nghĩ hay kế hoạch của mình (ai đó) với người khác

Ví dụ
“That’s how frustrated (chán nản) and angry I had become. It’s difficult to sit there and hear people waffling (nói chuyện dông dài) on and keep your own counsel, let alone your temper.”

If you want to make progress on North Korea, then keep your own counsel and stop heeding (chú ý, để ý) the awful advice of others, particularly National Security Advisor John Bolton who has a long history of magical thinking that America can impose its will on other countries.

If in doubt, play it safe Aquarius. The Seven of Swords is a ‘warning’ card which hints (gợi ý) that not everyone around you has your best interests at heart, or would respond to your plans in a positive way. So, don’t share them. Keep your own counsel and be prudent about whom you trust.

"Keep your nose clean" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Nicholas Swatz from Pexels

'Keep one's nose clean' = giữ cho mũi (của ai) sạch -> cư xử đúng mực; tránh vướng vào rắc rối ('đừng nhúng mũi vào' chuyện gì)

Ví dụ
It’s a savvy (hiểu biết) version of Donald Trump’s art of the deal: We’ll help you with employment, schooling, and health care to address your problems; in return, you keep your nose clean, or else.

Often looking both ordinary and uncomfortable in interviews, Armstrong seemed to absorb (thu hút, lôi cuốn) his four-square, work hard and keep your nose clean character from his surroundings growing up in tiny Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Meanwhile, on these three-hour round trips, I’m listening to Colson Whitehead’s Nickel Boys, which is based on an actual reformatory (trại cải tạo) school in the panhandle (doi đất, dải đất hẹp) during the Jim Crow era where black boys were abused, raped, and often beaten to death (in 2009, investigators found a number of unmarked graves). It is bleak (lạnh lẽo, trống trải). And the thing about the beatings and abuse (lạm dụng) in that school — as Whitehead explains it — is that it was completely indiscriminate (không phân biệt). Like, if you’re a black kid, there was no way to game the system. There was no way to keep your nose clean, so to speak, and avoid the beatings. You got beat because you were black. Period.

"Play innocent" nghĩa là gì?

Ngây thơ vô số tội. Photo by: Atikh Bana on Unsplash

"Play innocent" = tỏ ra vô tội -> nghĩa là hành xử như thể không biết gì, không liên quan đến sự việc, hoàn toàn vô can.

Ví dụ
“The city of Orange City and Orange City Public Library commandeered (trưng dụng) the state and resources to play innocent victim (nạn nhân) and use prosecution (khởi tố) to promote its agendas and raise funds for the library,” one of Dorr’s motion stated.

The behaviour (hành động) of a police constable (cảnh sát ở cấp thấp nhất) when whisking (vụt) away women medicos (sinh viên y khoa) who were staging (dàn dựng) a protest (phản đối) against the relocation of Unani Hospital in Charminar to Erragadda has spiralled into a controversy (tranh luận) due to his downright (rõ rành rành) cheap behaviour. A video of this distasteful behaviour by a male constable pinching and stamping woman medico discreetly is going viral (gây sốt). Taking advantage of the situation, the male constables groped women medicos and tried to play innocent. Unable to bear the pain, the women medicos whimpered (khóc thút thít).

“They always insult (xúc phạm) us into the field and don’t respect us but play innocent. The Iranians think they are great and the best and we are the worst. But I believe that they are fatal (tai họa), malicious (hiểm độc) and damned (ghê tởm) people. For me, this nation doesn’t exist, even though they proudly call themselves Persians, not Arabs. Sometimes we have to play with them, but for me, they don’t exist,” Kubiak said.

"Kill the goose that lays the golden egg" nghĩa là gì?

'Kill the goose that lays the golden egg' = giết con ngỗng đẻ trứng vàng -> phá hoại, hủy hoại, làm hỏng thứ gì đó mang lại lợi ích cho bạn

Ví dụ
The impact of festivals on the Old Town in particular must obviously be addressed but I humbly (đơn giản) contend (cho rằng, khẳng định) that what is needed is positive, creative thinking if we are not to kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

What Sweden, Denmark and other Nordic countries have are welfare states funded by their market (capitalist) economies which produce, as Jeffrey Dorfman points out, “high corporate and personal incomes that support the tax collections making the government benefits feasible (khả thi).” The Nordic countries, he added, “are smart enough not to kill the goose that lays the golden egg.”

Those managing the parks must be cautioned against letting the “profits” from wildlife tourism “kill the goose that lays the golden egg.” The tiger is essentially at the apex (đỉnh) of an elaborate eco-system (hệ sinh thái phức tạp), it cannot thrive (phát triển) in isolation. So there is urgent need to ensure that the recent positive signs do not result in complacency (tự mãn, bằng lòng). 'Just what the doctor ordered' = chính là những gì bác sĩ yêu cầu -> chính xác (đúng) những gì được yêu cầu để cải thiện tình hình tốt hơn hoặc khiến ai khỏe hơn, giống như hay nói 'chuẩn không cần chỉnh' đó mấy bạn

Ví dụ
"It was just what the doctor ordered," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Masa came out and was really pitch-efficient, especially in the middle innings. I thought he was really cruising, and we needed it."

EVER THINK SHOPPING is just too noisy? Are you getting tired of hearing those hits of the ‘60s over the loud speakers at your super market? A grocery store (cửa hàng tạp hóa) in Nelson might have just what the doctor ordered — quiet time.

Đừng ai phá hỏng khoảnh khắc này nhé Photo by Subodh Bajpai from Pexels

'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' = nếu nó không vỡ thì đừng sửa -> nếu mọi thứ đang hoạt động hoặc tiến triển tốt thì không cần phải thay đổi nó.

Ví dụ
This lack of creativity (sáng tạo) may be attributed to the age-old mentality of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, or simply because in most cases it’s a guarantee that the advertisement will do well.

For the 1968 model year, Chevrolet could leave well enough alone with the Camaro; it was an instant hit and racking up strong sales numbers and track figures against the Mustang. After all, the saying does go “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The changes from 1967 to 1968 were subtle (tinh tế, nhạy cảm), but thoughtful (thận trọng) nonetheless.

Clocking in at less than two minutes, this song possesses all the earmarks (đánh dấu) of a garage punk banger: brevity, catchiness, an upbeat demeanor and warm, lo-fi fuzziness. None of these traits, of course, are unprecedented for Loafers, as this seems perfectly on brand for the outfit, but you know what they say — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

'Hands are tied' = tay bị trói -> không được tự do hành động, bị ngăn cản giúp đỡ hay can thiệp vào do vượt tầm kiểm soát của ai (bởi quy tắc, mệnh lệnh hoặc ưu tiên khác)

Ví dụ
When it comes to data breaches 'our hands are tied at the moment. We're sort of powerless against banks,' says one woman.

Gary Hamilton admits his ‘hands are tied’ at the minute as they bid to try and tie Rhys Marshall down to a new deal at Mourneview Park.

“The intent (ý định, mục đích) is clear, to push the limits as much as we can under federal law and also to fight as hard as we can both on the legislative front and on the legal front in order to have local control back in our hands over these particular facilities,” Jacob said.

"On the ropes" có từ "ropes" là dây thừng hoặc dây được căng xung quanh sàn đấu boxing. Khi bị đối thủ đánh áp đảo thì ta có xu hướng bị dồn về phía góc của sàn đầu và sẽ tựa lên dây -> on the ropes. Thành ngữ này có nghĩa là sắp bị đánh bại hoặc ngục ngã, thất bại.

Ví dụ
With darkness falling on July 2, the Union Army was “on the ropes as much as it had ever been,” according to the author.

‘A team like Dublin are always going to come at you. They came at us and I suppose we were on the ropes but we didn’t deal with it well. They came running at us from a lot of different angles and really got their tails up (tự tin).’

At this time the NT was on the ropes and the national economy was clearly declining (suy giảm). The NT Government, highly sensitive to planning controversies (sự tranh luận) in Alice Springs, kiboshed (cản trở) the town council’s initiative (sáng kiến).

"A one-horse race" = cuộc đua độc mã.

Last night they landed a second mighty blow on the one team who seemed capable of making this championship a one-horse race.

In contrast to the Million, where the horses were clustered (tụm lại) throughout, the Beverly D. was a one-horse race for the opening three quarters.

City get the ball rolling for the second half. Meanwhile, before any meaningful action occurs, here’s our old friend Mac Millings making reference (tham khảo) to an MBM from 2007, for goodness sake. “Dearest Scott, I know It’s back! and It’s on!, but, while I’m excitedly nervous about how my hometown Hornets and their record signing, Ismaila Sarr, are going to fare, as far as the top of the table goes, I am decidedly uninspired by a two-horse race that’s really a one-horse race.

Photo by João Camargo from Pexels

'Going to hell in a handbasket' = xuống địa ngục trong một cái khăn tay -> trong điều kiện bị phá hủy, tàn phá nặng nề, trong tình trạng xấu; không tránh khỏi thất bại hoặc hư hại

Ví dụ
You’d have to be living on the moon to not know that the world, environmentally speaking, is going to hell in a handbasket. In fact, the moon is probably where we’ll end up if we don’t take action on waste and climate change.

During the Civil War, “going to hell in a handbasket” came into general use, meaning doom (bất hạnh, diệt vong) is ahead. Considering prophets of doom nowadays, is there any difference? Many Americans say the same thing.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket. And the fact that you waited until the absolute last minute to start cramming (nhồi nhét) for your philosophy (triết lý) midterm isn't helping. In short: Life is stressful. One way to manage that stress and avoid burnout is to meditate (trầm tư).

"God helps those who help themselves" nghĩa là gì?

Ảo diệu chưa? Photo by Miriam Espacio from Pexels

'God helps those who help themselves' = Chúa giúp đỡ những ai biết tự giúp chính mình -> bạn không thể trông chờ vào sự trợ giúp từ người khác mà phải tự nỗ lực để đạt những gì bạn muốn. Khi bạn tự cố gắng, những điều may mắn, và sự trợ giúp sẽ đồng hành cùng với bạn.

Ví dụ
"I know that you are great worshipers (người sùng đạo) but God helps those who help themselves. It is now time to confront the government and remind them that their one of the major mandates is to ensure the wellbeing of the citizens so that a Mosotho woman like 'Mé Doti can sleep soundlessly in her home.

″‘Trust in God but tie (buộc chặt) your camel (lạc đà)’ is an Islamic proverb that I related to library planning,” Hawkins explained. “In our culture, we might understand it as ‘God helps those who help themselves.’” Hawkins also described information from an SCKLS study that identified two general trends of change in south-central area public libraries.

When was the last time you heard someone say knowingly “God helps those who help themselves. Just like the Bible says.” We know the Bible (Kinh Thánh) actually does not say that. Instead, the Bible does say, “The helpless commit themselves to you: you have been the helper of the orphan ... O Lord, you will hear the desire of the meek (nhu mì, dễ bảo); you will strengthen their heart, you will incline your ear to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed.” Psalm 10:14-18.

"Ahead of the game" = dẫn trước trong cuộc chơi.

We got ahead of the game by employing the best people in our research laboratories.

“When you are building a business in a rapidly (nhanh chóng) changing industry you are going to have to be ahead of the game,” said Martin as he spoke about his journey since 2006.

Ví dụ

'Fate worse than death' = định mệnh còn tệ hơn cả cái chết -> tình huống rất khó chịu, rất tồi tệ, 'thà chết còn hơn'

Ví dụ
"It's really, really important to me for people to know this is not a worse-case scenario (viễn cảnh). This is not a fate worse than death. Life does go on and in my opinion it can only get better," she said.

That’s more than 400,000 Americans who could be saved from a fate worse than death. Young people and those with a genetic predisposition (thiên về) are most at risk, particularly during adolescence (thời thanh thiếu niên), when the brain is exquisitely vulnerable (dễ bị tổn thương).

'Fall between the cracks' = rơi vào giữa vết nứt -> bị lãng quên, không chú ý tới; mất phương hướng, khó lựa chọn trong một tình huống hoặc trường hợp phức tạp

Ví dụ
"I think that we need to be very mindful (lưu tâm, để ý) of patients (bệnh nhân) who fall between the cracks and especially have bad results." He says not all of her information "fits together" and recommended Gilarski speak further to her doctor to see what other options are available.
