"School of hard knocks" nghĩa là gì?

Công việc nào cũng có khó khăn, vất vả riêng Photo by Vijay Putra from Pexels

'School of hard knocks' = trường học của những cú đấm mạnh -> những trải nghiệm từ thực tế cuộc sống chứ không phải qua sách vở, trường lớp đặc biệt được tôi luyện qua gian khổ, nghịch cảnh.

Ví dụ
Fellow central defender Bennett sees £80m Maguire up close tonight as Manchester United visit Molineux. Both of them have graduated through the school of hard knocks on their way to carving out careers as Premier League stars.

Len graduated from Jerome High School in 1961 and then attended the school of hard knocks. In 1960 Len joined the Idaho National Guard and later was in the Army Reserves. On June 17, 1961 Len married Velma Slatter who for 58 years were best friends and partners.

Angela graduated last year and is now in Grade 8 at Nombuso High School. Allen is in Grade 5 at Ithuba and is now a few months away from topping his father’s highest educational achievement. You might say Ngeleka is a graduate of the school of hard knocks. In 2002, at the age of 15, he lost his father to a stroke (đột quỵ). It left him with little motivation and when he relocated to KwaNzimakwe, 10km from Trafalgar on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, he drifted into crime (phạm tội) and drug abuse (lạm dụng).

"A cold piece of work" nghĩa là gì?

Lời em nói như băng giá xuyên thấu tim tôi. Photo by: Osman Rana on Unsplash

"A cold peice of work" = công việc lạnh lùng -> nghĩa là người rất khó tính, thâm độc, khó ưa hoặc đáng chê trách.

Ví dụ
Unlike a certain headliner (tiêu đề), the young Canadian crooner (người hát nhạc nhẹ) doesn’t do the slimy R&B that’s trending. Instead, he keeps it tasteful with simple, gospel-rooted songs of unrequited love. He likely won’t deliver the most energetic set, but you’d have to be a cold piece of work to not be moved when he performs “We Find Love” and “Best Part.”

I have known Jin since she was 17 and escaped from South Oaks Mental hospital in Long Island. She told me numerous times it was her dream to marry a celebrity and trap him, and she dated a bunch of them including Damon Dash before Shane but they were all too smart to marry her. I tried to warn Shane a few times, but Jin is a cold piece of work. She was working at the strip club (câu lạc bộ múa thoát y) and was an escort (điếm) when I knew her and seems like she still has the same attitude (thái độ).

In 1988, she played Brenda Last in a cinema version of Evelyn Waugh’s A Handful Of Dust. Brenda is a cold piece of work, a careless (bất cẩn) mother, bored adulteress. The role suited ‘KST’. It was almost as if she did not need to act.

"Skinny as a beanpole" nghĩa là gì?

Xin hỏi thế gian có ai đẹp như ta? Photo by Christopher Campbell

"Skinny as a beanpole" = Da bọc xương như cái cọc cho đậu leo -> Gầy vô cùng, gầy cà khẳng cà kheo, cao và gầy.

Ví dụ
He seems too tall to be the archetypal (nguyên mẫu) central enforcer, more of a skinny beanpole than a Sergio Busquets.

"Growing up, I was always the skinny girl and I hated it, I saw all the ... I wasn't getting made fun of (bị chế nhạo) constantly for being a stick (cái que) or a beanpole.

Nineteen years old, and skinny as a beanpole, he had been offered a training course working at the luxury department store Bonwit Teller.

The athlete Smith had become was nothing like the Phelps’ had remembered. As for her humility (sự khiêm tốn), she was the same charming (duyên dáng, hấp dẫn) girl they knew and loved. “She was 5-10! Still skinny as a bean pole, but still, 5-10!” Frank said with a similar level of astonishment (sự ngạc nhiên) when they were reintroduced to each other nearly 25 years ago. She had caught the attention of Pac-10 schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State and Washington. Interestingly enough, Washington State never inquired about Smith once.

"Lead a charmed life" nghĩa là gì?

Tự do không âu lo Photo by Nina Uhlíková from Pexels

'Lead a charmed life' = điều khiển một cuộc sống đầy mê hoặc/phép màu -> có một cuộc sống gặp nhiều may mắn và có nhiều cơ hội tốt, tránh được những nguy hại.

Ví dụ
The Forest academy graduate went close again a minute later when he attempted to chip the ball past the on-rushing Muric but the ball drifted wide and the scores remained level, although The Reds’ goal was beginning to lead a charmed life.

From the outside, it looks like Steph and Dom Parker lead a charmed life. The posh (lịch sự, trang trọng) couple from Gogglebox, as they are best known, made their name providing perky (tươi tỉnh, đầy sức sống) pronouncements (tuyên bố chính thức, công bố) on the week’s TV.

Raised in the spotlight (đèn sân khấu), John carried his fame (danh tiếng) with natural ease, friends say. Here he is seen goofing off (tránh mặt) at a dinner party with Chermayeff (right) and her sister, Maro, in 1991. But, says Gillon, “John did not just lead a charmed life. He led a complicated life.”

This month’s full moon occurs in your opposite sign, Sagittarius, on Monday, June 17. This has positive implications for your relationships. The people in your life may suddenly become so generous that it feels like they want to give you the world. Pinch yourself to see if you’re still asleep, then use this time to see if they are simply exaggerating, or if you truly do lead a charmed life of abundance (giàu có).

Ví dụ
An incredible (ấn tượng) video shows a huge alligator chomping (đớp) down on a watermelon - and destroying it effortlessly (không cần cố gắng) in one bite. The video was shared last Thursday on Facebook by Florida's St Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. It shows their largest American alligator, named Bomber, make short work of the big fruit.

Bosch 7 Kg Fully Automatic WAK24168IN Front-Loading Washing Machine is equipped (trang bị) with many innovative (tân tiến) features which will make short work of doing laundry manually.

Andrew Brown has gotten a lot of reps (danh tiếng) rushing the edge during camp, and he got a chance to do the same in live action during the Chiefs’ two-minute drill (diễn tập) on Saturday. Not only did he get off the ball fast, he was extremely active with his pass rushes and was constantly moving his hands. Here he uses a club/punch move to make short work of right tackle Pace Murphy but the quarterback (hậu vệ) is able to step forward and escape.

"Man on the street" nghĩa là gì?

Không chê anh nghèo thì lên xe anh đèo...Ơ hay, em là con gái nhà lành đấy nhá. Photo by Les Anderson

"Man on the street" = Người trên đường phố -> Người dân/người bình thường.

Ví dụ
If you're like most people, you probably think you're a better driver than the man on the street. No doubt you're a more reasonable and kinder person, and heck you're probably better-looking and smarter too.

Passwords were also a valuable commodity (thương phẩm) among respondents (người phản hồi), with the man on the street saying they would pay an average of $3,808 to regain their email password. Meanwhile online banking passwords are apparently a bit cheaper in the minds of respondents; the average respondent would pony up (trả nợ) $3,213 to get their bank password back.

INSIDER's data team pulled information from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis to calculate motor vehicle spending from adults in all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. We also looked at a study by ValuePenguin that found the average annual cost of car insurance (bảo hiểm) premiums in every state. The figures listed in each slide reflect how much Americans spend on motor vehicles and parts, car insurance, and gasoline. Hawaii and New York reported spending the least amount of money annually (hằng năm) on cars, while North Dakota and Wyoming reported spending the most. Here's what the man on the street spends on cars annually in every state.

The state government (chính phủ bang) will strive (cố gắng) to strike a balance between its resoluteness (cương quyết) to embrace (đi theo) Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) and providing employment for its graduates, says Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The green channel is aimed to sustain and promote (duy trì và thúc đẩy) a speedy, transparent and accountable (nhanh chóng, minh bạch và có trách nhiệm) review of combination cases, strike a balance between facilitation (thuận tiện) and enforcement functions (chức năng thực thi), create a culture of compliance and support economic growth," the regulator said.

"Light of my life" nghĩa là gì?

Đi qua bao nhiêu tháng năm Photo by Barna David from Pexels

'Light of one's life' = ánh sáng của cuộc đời ai -> người yêu quý nhất trong cuộc đời ai

Ví dụ
For one man, this event served as the perfect cover story for his elaborate proposal to his girlfriend. "She's just the light of my life, I mean she's everything," said Braven Burleson, about his girlfriend Merrick Brady.

In 2009, she was re-married to Augustine Sanchez. Irene loved music, softball (bóng mềm), sewing, crocheting (đan móc), the Oakland Raiders, Colorado Rockies, and her family. Her family was the light of her life, and she was our Wonder Woman.

Tributes to the teen flooded in on social media after Mr Dreier’s girlfriend shared a post in honour of the “love of my life”. “Thank you for being the light of my life even on your bad days,” she shared. “I’m so sorry that this had to be our goodbye. I love you.”

"Get off a few good ones" nghĩa là gì?

Cười y như chưa bao giờ được cười. Photo by  Vidar Nordli-Mathisen

"Get off a few good ones" = Tránh vài điều/người tốt -> Kể một vài trò hề hoặc kiểm soát được một vài lời chỉ trích nặng.

Ví dụ
Pop was blessed in many ways, but the side of him I enjoyed most was his sense of humor. He loved to laugh and to make people laugh, a gift that is one of life’s most magic spices. He could get off a few good ones like a Vaudeville star and would work them into his speeches and remarks in amazing ways. They were often off-color (thô tục) but he was having such a good time telling them that his audience, especially at graduations, would roar (la hét) with laughter.

If you’re a comedian (diễn viên hài), that’s your job (and your moral compass (kim chỉ nam cho phẩm hạnh, đạo đức) ). But is it possible to be a comedian when you don’t know who you’re making jokes for? When you’re unsure who’s listening and what kind of mood they’re in? How can comedians get off a few good ones they want in a world where the butt of those jokes – from powerful politicians to powerless constituents (lập hiến) – don’t just get upset but turn a community against you or threaten legal action? Can comedy survive in this age of outrage (sự sỉ nhục)?

Wolf says: “I’m really lucky because I get all these premises (tiền đề) that haven’t been thoroughly explored before.” Being a girl in a boys’ club has its privileges (quyền ưu tiên). Not that she settles for clapter or you-go-girl woo-hooing (tán tỉnh, ve ván). “I’m not, like, a buy-my-own-drinks kind of feminist (nữ quyền),” she says at the start of her last special. “We all have our lines. Mine is at the bar.” She won’t be drawn on the overwhelming maleness of comedy nor the lack of diversity (sự đa dạng, phong phú) in late night. (She had a brief talkshow foray (sự đánh phá) with The Break, which Netflix commissioned for 10 episodes.) “It’s just going to take time,” she says matter-of-factly. And while she waits she’ll keep getting off a few good ones.

"Appetite comes with eating" nghĩa là gì?

"Nữa đi, ta chưa no!" - hoàng thượng said. Photo by Shubhankar Sharma on Unsplash

"Appetite comes with eating" có nghĩa là càng ăn càng thấy ngon miệng/ càng có càng muốn thêm, được voi đòi tiên.

Ví dụ
One was always hungrier the day after the meal, which bears out (nói lên) Rabelais's words: 'Appetite comes with eating!"

The drinking was particularly to his taste. Appetite comes with eating. Much more does thirst come with drinking. Two sh(3 quarts) of saké (rượu) did this human hog guzzle (ăn tham như lợn) before he rose to leave.

Elen’s friends always remember to celebrate special occasions (dịp đặc biệt). Instead of attending Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, they go to a birthday party in a luxury motel. Unfortunately, the owner just ate a delicious human liver sausage (xúc xích gan người). And the appetite comes with eating. The party of their life becomes a party of their death.

"Spoil your appetite" nghĩa là gì?

"Spoil/ ruin one's appetite" = làm ai đó ăn mất ngon, chán ăn.

Ví dụ
There is another world out there, isn’t there, I mean other than politics, and people who make your skin crawl (khiến bạn khó chịu), and spoil your appetite, and not just for food, but for life.

I love to rely on the combination of nuts and fruits (kết hợp các loạt hạt và trái cây), either fresh fruit (quả tươi) or dried fruit (quả sấy) for a longer shelf life. A small handful of trail mix is one of my favorite snacks that won't spoil my appetite for my next meal.

Whether or not you were/are lucky enough to have a granny shower (buổi gặp mặt gia đình) you with gifts, wisdom and whatever equivalent (tương đương) of a Happy Meal might have tastily (hương vị) ruined your generation's appetite, you'll find the most touching scenes are between Billi and Nai Nai.

"Greenhorn" nghĩa là gì?

Sao mặt giả nai thế em? Photo by Gabriel Matula

"Greenhorn" = Nai xanh -> Người ngây thơ, non nớt dễ bị lừa bịp, lính mới, người mới vào nghề hoặc người mới nhập cư.

Ví dụ
Money for the awarded scholarships (học bổng) is earned at the annual Buckaroo ride through an interesting Greenhorn tradition.

He contested (tranh cãi) the Molo parliamentary (thuộc quốc hội) seat on a Jubilee Party ticket aged 28, his critics wrote him off as a non-starter and a political greenhorn.

Initially, McNutt didn’t see Christians as a quarterback (tiền vệ), but more of a wide receiver. That changed as another greenhorn, 6-foot-3 senior Braydin Preston, went out for the Wildcatz. McNutt considered him just as talented as the most talented players he already has.

Turns out, the surveillance football from the robberies and promos from the Discovery show were on at the same time on tv. Savvy Deadliest Catch fans quickly put two and two together, and contacted authorities. Deputy (người ủy quyền) District Attorney Chris Parosa summed it up succinctly (súc tích). “I don’t think it was a particularly brilliant move on his part.” In 2010, he was sentenced (bị giam trong tù) nine and a half years jail time. He should be out just in time to apply to be the next Wizard greenhorn again.

"More of a chore than a pleasure" nghĩa là gì?

Làm màu sống ảo tí thôi :D Photo by Thought Catalog on Unsplash

"More of a chore than a pleasure" = việc phải làm/ làm như thói quen hơn là yêu thích -> điều gì đó bạn không thực sự sẵn lòng làm.

Ví dụ
Dry or wet, though, my energy wanes (suy yếu) at 90 degrees and even my daily walking becomes more chore than pleasure.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like reading. But I’m a slow reader and, until recently, had hundreds of pages of required reading every week. Blame (đổ lỗi) college and graduate school, but the truth was that reading seemed more like a chore than an enjoyment.

Just As a brand new beginning is a chance for innovation (đổi mới), it’s also an opportunity to welcome a new generation of Metroid fans. It’s the same with any series which goes on for a long time – there’s a certain amount of assumed knowledge and lore (hiểu biết) that makes coming in as a new player feel like a chore than a pleasure.

"Owe a debt of gratitude" = Mang nợ biết ơn -> Vô cùng cảm ơn/biết ơn ai vì việc họ đã làm.

Ví dụ
Kurdish Pershmerga troops (quân đội) have successfully led the U.S. war on the Islamic State (ISIS), which is why the US-led coalition (sự liên minh) owes them a debt of gratitude, Teller said.

"Louisianans owe a debt of gratitude to Gov. Blanco, who always put the people of our state first, fighting to improve the quality of life for our families and children, championing better educational opportunities for all students at every level and building a stronger Louisiana," Edwards wrote on Twitter.

Kentucky’s kids owe a debt of gratitude to the Courier Journal’s editor, Rick Green, for making a considerable commitment (sự cam kết) of resources to focus on abuse (lạm dụng) and neglect (làm lơ) in Kentucky. That gratitude extends to Debby Yetter, whose reporting prowess highlighted the multitude of factors that are contributing to the tragic state of this commonwealth (thịnh vượng chung) when it comes to the safety of our children.

"From where I stand" nghĩa là gì?

Ngó nhìn vậy thôi, chứ không có ý gì đâu ná. Photo by  Karsten Gohm

"From where I stand" = Từ nơi tôi đứng -> Theo như tôi quan sát/xem hoặc giải thích.

Ví dụ
The book, titled “From Where I Stand: Rebuilding Indigenous (bản xứ, bản địa) Nations for a Stronger Canada,” is scheduled for release (ra mắt) on Sept.

If this is so, when I am in Port of Spain and I look out my window, from where I stand I will see sunshine; but if I pick up the phone and call a friend in San Fernando and she looks out her window she may see rain.

From where I stand inside the South Dakota cornfield (ruộng ngô) I was visiting with entomologist (nhà côn trùng học) and former USDA scientist Jonathan Lundgren, all the human-inflicted (sự tổn thương do nhân loại) traumas (tổn thương) to Earth seem far away. It isn't just that the corn is as high as an elephant's eye — are people singing that song again? — but that the field burgeons and buzzes (tiếng vo ve) and chirps (tiếng rúc) with all sorts of other life, too.

Of late, the debate (tranh luận) on former President Ian Khama’s involvement in politics while still holding his position of a Chief, has come under sharp focus by some, if not all members of the public largely belonging to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). From where I stand, this debate is painfully hypocritical (đạo đức giả) let alone self-serving. It must be stated without flinching that these issues are topical because the tables have turned with Khama providing political mileage he would otherwise provide to the BDP, to other political formations. And in driving a political agenda that could potentially hurt the BDP, he effectively uses the chieftainship (cương vị thủ lĩnh) tag to drive the point home. Naturally and considering the bigger political implication (sự liên can) and ramifications (sự rẽ nhánh) of Khama’s intentions, the BDP should be worried and scared to the marrow (tận xương tủy).

"Enjoy a slap-up meal" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Christiann Koepke on Unsplash

"Enjoy a slap-up meal" = thưởng thức một bữa ăn tát.

Fancy treating yourself to a slap-up meal tonight? Here are four Sunday night dining deals (ưu đãi) you won't want to miss.

I went to lunch in Madrid last Sunday with an Irish expat friend and we enjoyed a slap-up meal for the price of a pint (panh) and a sandwich in Dublin.

Sir Billy Connolly was spotted enjoying a slap up meal with some of his nearest and dearest in the city centre, ahead of today's Celtic match against (trận đối đầu) Dunfermline.

The group - who were without their other brother Jermaine - enjoyed a slap-up meal at the popular restaurant, which has become a favourite for a host (số đông, nhóm người) of celebrities and sportsmen including Ricky Martin, Anthony Joshua and footballer Harry Winks.

While they were separated, he embarked on (vướng vào) an affair (chuyện tình) with Vicky. Months later, however, when Michelle said that she wanted to get back together with him, he was delighted. But when he tried to break it off with Vicky, he discovered that she was pregnant. Desperate (liều mình, tuyệt vọng) to be a dad, he decided to try and lead a double life.

Few things get the Destiny 2 community in a tizzy more than a shot at strike-specific loot (băng cướp), such as The Long Goodbye sniper (người bắn tỉa) rifle (nòng súng) that drops from The Insight Terminus Nightfall. This guide will discuss the only possible way to obtain this weapon (vũ khí), and whether your score will increase or decrease your chances of getting it.

"If they know who the artist is, the safest thing and the right thing to do is to reach out and seek permission."

Ví dụ
