"A tempest in a teapot" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Clément Falize on Unsplash

"A tempest in a teapot" = cơn bão lớn trong tách trà -> nghĩa là việc bé xé ra to, việc không đâu cũng làm to chuyện.

Ví dụ
It does seem all a tempest in a teapot. After all, we haven’t heard any peeps from Joussardians. But then, there are nowhere near as many people living in Joussard as Driftpile. Maybe there just aren’t enough rousers (người khích động) in Joussard!

Stay with me; this looks like a tempest in a teapot, but it isn’t. On July 1, Japanese Prime Minister (thủ tướng) Shinzo Abe announced (thông báo) that Japan would restrict (hạn chế) exports of fluorinated polyimide, resist, and hydrogen fluoride to South Korea. These materials are integral (cần thiết) to manufacturing semiconductors (chất bán dẫn), which account for more than 21% of South Korea’s exports. And the price of semiconductors has spiked since Abe’s announcement, which down the road will mean products like smartphones are going to be much more expensive.

If you’re not following the Android blogs, you might say this is a tempest in a teapot. But what’s brewing in this seemingly small teapot is the future of the operating system (hệ điều hành) used by the majority (phần lớn) of people today — one that’s bigger than the iPhone and bigger even than Windows.

"By hook or by crook" nghĩa là gì?

Đâu là chìa khóa để mở trái tim em? Photo by Chunlea Ju

"By hook or by crook" = Bằng móc hoặc bằng cái gậy có móc -> Bằng đủ mọi cách hoặc trăm ngàn phương kế để đạt mục đích nào đó chẳng hạn.

Ví dụ
Advocate Dali Mpofu, Moyo's legal representative, alleged (đưa ra luận điều) on Friday that Old Mutual aimed to keep Moyo out of the gate “by hook or by crook”.

Everything that came near the Colombian against Warford was repelled (cự tuyệt, xua đuổi), by hook or by crook, as the Toffees kept a clean sheet (giữ sạch lưới) in their 1-0 win.

"One of our gripes (phàn nàn, kêu ca) this season is that we haven't created enough chances, but we can talk about their 'keeper (who was voted man of the match) making good saves and being a bit unlucky at times, but the ball has to go in the back of the net, by hook or by crook.

In Siberia, more than 2 million hectares of forest continues to burn. Unprecedented fires (vụ cháy không lường trước) have already officially been recognized as an attempt to hide illegal logging (khúc gỗ). The fire passed through the territories that had previously been allocated for the implementation of investment projects. Today, the investment territory is the Far East. Investors by hook or by crook try to get forest plots. What schemes are used for this? And is not one thing hidden behind loud statements – the desire to make money on deforestation (sự phá rừng), and then hide the traces (vết tích) in the fire?

"Go bananas" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: abbs johnson on Unsplash

"Go bananas" -> nghĩa là trở nên phi lý hoặc điên rồ. Có thể hiểu theo nghĩa khác là bày tỏ cảm xúc vui mừng/phấn khích một cách hồ hởi.

Ví dụ
Indeed, the 68-year old pediatrician (bác sĩ khoa nhi), who is also an expert (chuyên gia) in child obesity (béo phì), said softly but adamantly (cứng rắn), “I do what I preach. I wouldn’t go bananas if someone else gave him a bit of chocolate, but I’d never buy it."

The life of a NRL coach can be hellish (như địa ngục). When at the helm of a team in form, things smell pretty good. String together a handful of wins and the fans go bananas; watching their boys climb the ladder and loom into semi-final contention (ganh đua).

Rahul Bose had no reason to go bananas after seeing the bill for two specimens (mẫu vật) of the calorific fruit he asked for after a session at the hotel gym: Rs 442.50. After all, even if the luxury hotel in Chandigarh slipped up by categorising two unpeeled bananas as a ‘fruit platter’ and adding 18% GST accordingly, it merely followed the credo of its kind.

"Two strings to (one's) bow" = Căng hai dây lên cung -> Có hai hoặc nhiều cách thức để chinh phục mục tiêu/đạt sự thành công hoặc hiểu đơn giản là có phương cách dự phòng.

Ví dụ
I do want two strings to my bow in a race (cuộc đua) as competitive as this and Paul Nicholls’ ROMAIN DE SENAM is the other one I like at 33/1 (Betfair Sportsbook, 28/1 General).

Walker added: "I think he's a master with the ball and people will watch his hard hitting and enjoy that, it's the exciting bit of T20 cricket when the balls sails out the park and that's why he's such a valuable player for us because he's got two strings to his bow.

“From a winemaking (người làm rượu) point of view I like making these wines. After AB&D I didn’t want to be typecast (phân khớp vai) as the guy who makes all those hard to pronounce wines, the guy who just did the weird stuff. This is a return to say that I am a man with maybe two strings to my bow, maybe not just one.”

"A lot of cities only have one or two strings to their bow but Toowoomba has got numerous now in many aspects (khía cạnh). Before it was mainly driven by agriculture and schooling, whereas now we're so strong in the medical side, the business side (and) the retirement side is still strong.

"On neutral ground " nghĩa là gì?

"On neutral ground " -> Vùng trung lập -> Lập trường/lãnh thổ trung lập.

Ví dụ
“The whole thing is political and the charges are preposterous (phi lý) ,” Ncube said. “We want to defend our case, but they reneged (bội ước, từ bỏ) on meeting on neutral ground at the last minute. A police station isn’t neutral, it isn’t safe.”

Afterwards, South American football blew a collective sigh of relief and consoled (an ủi) itself that there could be no repeat. The traditional format of a home and away, two-legged (2 trận đấu gồm lượt đi và về) final was giving way to a one off decider on a neutral ground -- Santiago, Chile in this year's version.

Greenlight New Orleans is installing rain barrels (thùng tròn) on neighbors’ properties. The Mid-City volleyball group is cleaning up the bank of Bayou St. John where they play. Mid-City Vineyard Church is picking up trash (nhặt rác) around Sacred Heart apartments. Volunteers with the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization are meeting on the Jefferson Davis Parkway neutral ground between Conti and Bienville streets to pick up trash.

"Sitting on a gold mine" = Ngồi trên mỏ vàng -> Sở hữu/kiểm soát điều gì/công việc sẽ sinh ra nhiều lợi nhuận và tạo ra nhiều tiền.

Ví dụ
Which means, if you're lucky enough to own property (sở hữu tài sản) on this pristine (ban sơ) peninsula (bán đảo), you just might be sitting on a gold mine.

“Trevor, I don’t think you understand; you’re sitting on a gold mine. We need to do this for a crowd. You need to come to the township (thành phố nhỏ) and start DJing gigs. No one has ever seen a DJ playing on a computer before,” he said.

The gold focussed exploration company only listed on the ASX in January last year and appears to be sitting on a goldmine – literally – at its flagship (tàu đô đốc) project, located in the underexplored and prospective nation of Côte d’Ivoire.

Tuyết rơi nhiều quá...thôi cứ đi bộ cho an toàn. Photo by adrian

"On the safe side" = Phía an toàn -> Cho chắc ăn/tránh những rủi ro, nguy hiểm có thể xảy ra và không liều hành động.

Ví dụ
To be on the safe side, dry your sage (cây xô thơm) leaves now by blanching (làm tái) them - dipping them into boiling water followed by cold.

Jetski showed some promise early in his first preparation but didn’t run up to his promising debut (lần đầu ra mắt công chúng) in two subsequent (tiếp theo, lần sau) starts. Gelded this time in so he’s worth keeping on the safe side.

To be on the safe side, BMC hasn’t issued property tax bills to around 2.5 lakh (cánh kiến đỏ) buildings, which have homes that fit the criterion (tiêu chuẩn).

They may be forced to conduct arbitrary (toàn quyền quyết định) and unlawful censorship (cơ quan kiểm duyệt) of opinions they feel are controversial (gây tranh cãi), just to err (sai lầm) on the safe side of the rules.

"Without a stitch on" nghĩa là gì?

Nude là cả một nghệ thuật! Photo by Hanna Postova on Unsplash

"Without a stitch (of cloth) on" = không một mảnh vải che thân. "Stitch" ở đây có nghĩa là một mảnh vải nhỏ hay một cái áo, cái quần.

Ví dụ
“Each year about this time when summer’s winding down (chuyển mùa), the Naked Ladies burst upon the scene, like Eve… without a stitch of greenery (cây), fresh and schoolgirl pink.

On these jaunts (cuộc đi chơi), he witnessed some of the most bizarre sights (cảnh tượng kỳ lạ) one could see. “You saw ash-clad sadhus (người đàn ông khổ hạnh) wearing Raybans and talking on their iPhones, without a stitch of clothing on their bodies.

When I was a child, we had stories we told over and over. There was the time my father ran out of the house in the middle of the night without a stitch of clothing on because he thought a fox was after our puppies. Or the time a Canada goose chased my brother and me into a bush (bụi cây).

"Your heart's content" nghĩa là gì?

"One's heart's content" hoặc "one's content" = chứa đựng cả trái tim -> (làm việc) với một tinh thần quyết liệt, dồn hết tâm trí.

Ví dụ
Yes, you can sing along to your hearts content as Shane, Mark, Nicky and Kian perform all the Westlife classics (kinh điển) on stage.

In his 92nd year, Sheehan sticks by his computer every day, writing prose and poetry (thơ văn) to his heart's content and often to that of his readers.

The loyal and passionate (trung thành và đam mê) BTS fans even coined (đặt ra) the term ‘Namjooning’ to represent the way that RM is living his best life. The definition is: “To do what you want to do to your heart’s content as Kim Namjoon” and “To experience the life you really wanted to have and live with it to the fullest.”

"Wear your heart on your sleeve" nghĩa là gì?

Con gái đẹp nhất khi là chính mình. Photo by Court Prather on Unsplash

"Wear one's heart on one's sleeve" = đeo trái tim trên tay áo -> người thật thà, không thể che giấu cảm xúc. Trong vở "Othello" của Shakespeare vào thế kỷ 17, nhân vật Iago nói "I will wear my heart upon my sleeve/ for daws to peck at", được hiểu là thể hiện những cảm xúc sâu kín cho mọi người cùng biết.

Ví dụ
She added: “I wear my heart on my sleeve and most people know everything about me. Obviously, there are things that are still personal that I wouldn’t broadcast (lên sóng) but mostly this is it.”

You purposely (cố tình) go in the DR because you don’t want your other houseguests to think that you’re soft (yếu mềm) and mushy (ủy mị) and you wear your heart on your sleeve and you’re easily manipulated (dễ bị điều khiển).

I’m a working class (tầng lớp lao động) girl and I like to put that in my act and celebrate that and wear my heart on my sleeve. It’s really important to me because we live in an age where so many want to be something else and actually it’s great to celebrate who you are.

"Eat your heart out" nghĩa là gì?

As you eat your heart out, tunes (giai điệu) will be playing the whole day through to set a fun and upbeat (lạc quan) vibe.

When the shoes were picked up from the school a few of the teachers and reception (lễ tân) said, 'Banksy, eat your heart out!' The children have much to be proud of and it was a fun way to teach them about local heritage (di sản).

The expression, ‘eat your heart out’ is usually followed by the name of a famous individual (người nổi tiếng). In my example, what I am jokingly suggesting is that I am a better detective (thám tử giỏi) than Sherlock Holmes — that he would be extremely jealous of my ability to solve cases (xử lý vụ án).

"Keep in stitches" nghĩa là gì?

"(Keep someone) in stitches" = giữ mũi khâu, cẩn thận bục chỉ -> (khiến ai) cười như được mùa, cười nắc nẻ, không dừng lại được.

Ví dụ
Lewis Capaldi left Ibiza bar staff in stitches after struggling to pull a pint (cốc bia) at The Highlander bar in San Antonio.

RTE presenter Jennifer Zamparelli has her followers in stitches after dressing up her toddler (quần áo đứa trẻ) as her on screen alter ego.

8:30 PM “Highway of Heartaches” Owen and Smelley will keep you in stitches while your foot is tapping (gõ) and you are groovin’ to the tunes (nhún nhảy theo giai điệu).

The six episodes will no doubt have you in stitches from the word go, just as if it were the bigger and more outrageous (thái quá) northern brother of BBC Three’s This Country.

"Fork over/over/upon something" có nghĩa là đưa/trả cái gì (thường là tiền) dù bạn không muốn.

Ví dụ
Right now, Big Pharma names its price, and U.S. taxpayers fork over $129 billion to pay drug company’s yearly tab (hóa đơn) to Medicare.

President Donald Trump has abruptly cancelled (đột ngột hủy) his trip to Denmark — because the prime minister (thủ tướng) wouldn't fork over Greenland.

Nicola is a fifteen-year-old Naples teenager who’s tired of seeing his mother forced to fork over monthly protection money (phí bảo hộ) to local hoods (nhóm người).

Fork over the dough (tiền)! The state shuttered (đóng cửa) iconic Brooklyn pizzeria Di Fara on Tuesday over more than $150,000 in unpaid taxes (thuế chưa nộp), officials said.

"A hill of beans" nghĩa là gì?

Đậu có thể nấu nhiều món mà, sao lại bị gán cho cái mác không giá trị nhỉ? Photo by George Becker on Pexels

'A hill of beans' = một núi đậu -> thứ không mấy quan trọng, giá trị hay đáng giá.

Ví dụ
When I ask the question, “What are you doing to develop the next generation?” I usually hear a lot of lip service and superficial (hời hợt) things that, in most cases, don’t add up to a hill of beans.

And yet, when it came time to take down the only person who stood in his way, Jon's Targaryen heritage (thừa kế) didn't seem to be worth a hill of beans. According to actor Kit Harington, that's because his choice was based on turning his back on that blood.

The people of Hong Kong are in the streets fighting for these things. We should be, too. The protesters in Hong Kong are making a conscious statement that the pursuit of happiness involves more than just money, that all the dollars in the world don’t amount to a hill of beans if you’re not free to say what’s on your mind.

"Have the world by the tail" nghĩa là gì?

Cứ vui đi vì cuộc đời cho phép Photo by Godisable Jacob from Pexels

'Have the world by the tail' = có cả thế giới đằng sau đuôi -> có một cuộc sống rất thành công, thỏa mãn và hạnh phúc; mọi thứ trong tầm kiểm soát

Ví dụ
It’s a fact: Bad things happen to good people. The Brann family seems like they have the world by the tail. Parents Darrell and Christi are hard-working; Darrell as a contractor who has lived in the county since 2001, and owns the OK Theatre, while Christi is a Wallowa County native and stay-at-home mom who home schools her children.

Malcolm Cater appeared to have the world by the tail — at least through two years of high school football with Riverhead and his freshman season at Syracuse University. Playing on a full scholarship for the Orange and wearing the same uniform No. 4 as he did for Riverhead, Cater was second on the depth chart at middle linebacker and looked destined to be a starter his sophomore (năm hai) season.

"There's highs and lows. There's days you feel like you have the world by the tail and you can be really generous and maybe improve some equipment here or your barn here or your house there, and then there's days where you're going, 'Man, I don't know if we're going to have enough to make it through the end of the year...we maybe shouldn't have made those improvements to the house,'" Geigle said. "It's kind of a like a roller coaster (tàu lượn cao tốc; người hay thay đổi cảm xúc) or arguing with yourself all the time."

"Hard on the eyes" nghĩa là gì?

Ơ hay tự dưng cái cây ở đâu ra đây nhỉ? Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

'Hard on the eyes' = nhìn khó chịu -> không hấp dẫn, xấu xí

Ví dụ
But while it might be hard on the eyes, the property's agent Charles Bailey told 7NEWS.com.au it has received a great deal of interest.

No matter how hard on the eyes traditional Crocs are, at least they serve a purpose. These gloves, on the other hand, appear to actually hinder movements. But hey, that's just the price of fa-shun. As in, you'll likely be shunned from society for sporting these.

Blue light is a light that can be seen everywhere from the sun to digital and electronic devices like smartphones, televisions, and computer screens. It can be pretty hard on the eyes, which is why a handful of the new glasses are made with special blue light-filtering technology that prevents the light from causing headaches, blurry vision, and loss of sleep.

Many hockey fans aren't even sure of what a Flyer is - but I digress. It is a "P" with a wing, we think. It's not exciting or intimidating or interesting. The fact that the team was part of the 1967 Expansion and has only made a few minor adjustments is essentially the only reason this uniform isn't lower. There is not much to be excited about — outside of tradition — but at least the Flyers orange isn't too hard on the eyes . . . unless you're from Pittsburgh.

"Seamy side of life" nghĩa là gì?

'Seamy side of life' = mặt trái của cuộc đời -> những khía cạnh không dễ chịu, xấu xí, cực nhọc của cuộc sống; một khía cạnh khác chưa được tiết lộ

Ví dụ
A seamy side of life on the North Olympic Peninsula that many never see was revealed in the allegations of a 39-page probable cause statement released Friday.

"It's sad to hear people say I capture the seamy side of life," he says. "I don't see anything horrible (kinh khủng) in these pictures of mine. They are not just 'social photography,' as many people see them, they are my personal encounters and scenes."

The Rev. Vincent King, who by virtue (đức hạnh, đức tính tốt) of his ministerial and social activities is in a position to speak of the seamy side of life in Dunedin, gave an Otago Daily Times reporter yesterday some particulars of the many forms of evil which come under his notice.

There’s a scene at the end of “Jackie Brown” when Jackie, played by the incomparable (không thể sánh được, có một không hai) Pam Grier, makes an offer to bail bondsman Max Cherry to fly with her to Spain and start a new life. Max, played to world-weary perfection by Robert Forster, seriously considers it. He wants to. He has fallen for her. But he can’t. He’s a Los Angeles guy, drawn to the seamy side of life. He stays.

"Hold on for dear life" nghĩa là gì?

Cái ngoắc tay đầy trách nhiệm Photo by Jasmine Wallace Carter from Pexels

'Hold on for dear life' -> giữ chặt cái gì như thể cuộc sống của bạn phụ thuộc vào nó.

Ví dụ
There is hardly room for everyone on the already-crowded bus, and as it begins to pull away, several children climb on to the footboard (bậc lên xuống) of the bus and hold on for dear life.

Proponents of the four-team playoff say the regular season is its own playoff (trận quyết định). In that case, who can beat Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia and Ohio State and hold on for dear life until the CFP committee sets the bracket (đồng hạng)?

The goal came towards the end of a second stanza in which Australia’s youth was forced to hold on for dear life as the side of former Socceroo Brad Maloney piled on (dồn) the pressure in their quest for back-to-back Championships. The Young Socceroos thoughts will now turn to this November when they will travel to Taiwan to play the host nation, Macau and Laos in AFC U19 Championship qualifying.

Sosa scored two knockdowns in the fifth round, with the first coming when he nailed Rhodes with a left hook (cú đấm móc) to the head that dropped him flat on his back. Rhodes slammed (đập mạnh) his head on the mat on the knockdown but showed determination to survive. His legs were very unsteady as he tried to hold on for dear life. Sosa continued to pound him with both hands, eventually sending him to all fours with an overhand right with about 10 seconds left in the round.

"Risk life and limb" nghĩa là gì?

Cảnh không dành cho người yếu tim Photo by Juliano Ferreira from Pexels

'Risk life and limb' = mạo hiểm cả mạng sống và tay chân -> làm việc gì nguy hiểm có thể gây ra thương tích nặng nề hoặc nguy hiểm tới tính mạng

Ví dụ
WOULD you rather pee (đi tiểu) with a washing machine rattling away overhead, or risk life and limb by climbing out of a bath positioned next to a staircase (cầu thang)?

Missisippi pays its C.O.s the lowest annual salary in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. SMCI starting salary is a mere $12.33 per hour for guards to risk life and limb.

Australia’s Dean Jones really did risk life and limb when, badly dehydrated (mất nước), he batted on to score a double century against India in the heat and humidity (ẩm) of Madras (now Chennai) in 1986/87.

You don’t have to fly all the way to the African Serengeti to see wildlife roam freely or risk life and limb trekking solo in Montana or Alaska to catch a glimpse of mountain lions, buffalo, elk, or grizzly bears. There are places where you can experience these majestic (hùng vĩ) and wild animals in a way that’s responsible for both you and the creatures in settings that are also safe and family friendly.

"Make capital out of" nghĩa là gì?

Khi còn trẻ phải học hành chăm chỉ nghe chưa mấy đứa? Photo by Liam Anderson from Pexels

'Make capital out of something' = tạo ra vốn từ -> tận dụng/lợi dụng tình huống để làm lợi cho mình, kiếm lợi từ cái gì

Ví dụ
Northstream offers services to mobile operators, network and handset (máy thu phát cầm tay) vendors, and the industry at large. The company helps communications service providers (CSPs) identify industry shifts, adapt to market changes, and make capital out of new business and technology opportunities.

The advice may be a momentary (chốc lát, tạm thời) reprieve (cứu giúp tạm thời, hoãn thi hành) for long-suffering husbands who may have been victims of depravity (hành động đồi bại) by their wives but really, why would a husband want to make capital out of such conduct in bed by his wife? Is DOVVSU serious about husbands reporting their wives to the police for wearing jeans in bed?

“It is difficult for me to judge the decisions taken at the Army HQ but one thing is clear that the sudden and complete exit of Kalwant Singh from the picture of Kashmir operations would perhaps not be very desirable. To start with, the Pakistan and Azad Kashmir governments would try and make capital out of this change. Secondly, it would lower the prestige (uy tín) of the Army Commanders in the eyes of the public and thirdly, it would accentuate (nhấn mạnh) the differences and widen the rift (rạn nứt) among the Army generals at a time when they should all be united in a common endeavour. Gen Thimmaya who is succeeding Gen Kalwant Singh would no doubt be a very successful Army Commander in the Kashmir theatre.”

"If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" nghĩa là gì?

"If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" (Nếu bạn trả mấy hạt lạc thì bạn sẽ được những con khỉ thôi) có nghĩa là nếu bạn trả lương ít thì bạn sẽ có được những nhân viên bình thường thôi. Phải trả lương cao hơn thị trường thì mới mong có được những người giỏi: Tiền nào của nấy.

Ví dụ:
The member for Hardwick and Salters Lane said: "It would be interesting to know what they pay managers at each of these care homes because to quote the famous saying 'if you pay peanuts you get monkeys'.

Tory councillor Andrew Baggott defended the decision. He said: “I approve of this, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys." There’s no reason why a person who does little work should be paid the same as someone who does the most work.

IBIA director Unni Einemo, who has been a central figure in the IMO negotiations (đàm phán) on the sulphur (lưu huỳnh) cap, warned that pursuing bunker fuels with below market prices would likely cause problems for their buyers. “I am tempted to say if you pay peanuts you get monkeys... We see too much of bunkers buyers chasing the lowest possible price,” she said. (Chú thích: Bunker fuel is the generic term given to any fuel poured into a ship’s bunkers to power its engines.)

-----

Eccentric billionaire Chiquinho Scarpa ruffled (làm trái ý, làm mếch lòng) more than a few feathers in his native Brazil recently when he announced plans to bury his beloved Bentley.

The businessman said he would bury his $500,000 luxury car - a black Bentley Flying Spur- so that he could drive it in the afterlife (thế giới bên kia, thế giới âm, hậu kiếp). 62-year-old Scarpa said he had been inspired after watching a TV documentary on the Egyptians, who were buried with their most precious belongings.

Needless to say, the plan drew an avalanche (tuyết lở, tràng dồn dập) of criticism on social media, with people labelling him as cruel, elitist and downright (đích thực, rành rành) insane (điên cuồng, mất trí). Poverty campaigners savaged him for his “wasteful lunacy (hành động điên rồ, cử chỉ điên dại, ý nghĩ rồ dại)”, saying that the car could have been donated (hiến) to charity (từ thiện).

...Just as the car was about to be lowered into the ground, Scarpa called an abrupt (đột ngột) halt (dừng) to proceedings. He told the assembled media: “I have not buried my car. Everyone thought it absurd when I said I’d do it. It is absurd to bury bodies, which can save many lives. Nothing is more valuable. Be a donor (người hiến tặng), tell your family”.
