"Consolation prize" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Jonathan Chng on Unsplash

"Consolation prize" có từ consolation là an ủi -> từ này nghĩa là 'giải khuyến khích'.

Ví dụ
In the eighth grade, Hải realised that his mother had to always open the door while carrying (bế) him. So Hải researched (nghiên cứu) and created an internal (từ bên trong) locking system that automatically opens doors with a mobile phone. Only pre-installed (cài đặt sẵn) phone numbers can connect with the system. With this system, Hải won the second prize in the Creative Competition for Teenager in 2015 and the consolation prize in the 2015 National Youth Competition.

Hundreds of thousands participate (tham gia) in the Kerala Lotteries to turn their lives. The Kerala State Lottery Department brings out 8 bumper prize values for today’s Sthree Sakthi SS-172 Lottery. Also, there’s a consolation prize worth ₹8,000. The first prize winner gets a prize value worth ₹60 lacs. The second prize is worth ₹10 lacs while the third prize winner will be awarded with a cash prize value of ₹1 lac.

US Open officials have apologised (xin lỗi) after a competition appeared to present tickets to the women's semi-finals as a consolation prize. Fans are being encouraged (động viên) to sign up for the Fan Access Pass for this year's tournament, which begins on 26 August, with the chance to win tickets.

"Different strokes for different folks" nghĩa là gì?

Chúng ta đều không giống nhau. Bạn tôi đều lấy chồng, đẻ con rồi, còn tôi thì chưa muốn. Photo by Brooke Cagle on Unsplash

"Different strokes for different folks" = vạn người vạn nét -> mỗi người đều có những nhu cầu, mong muốn khác nhau, không ai giống ai.

Ví dụ
It might be hard to pinpoint (xác định) the best job in the United States. Different strokes, different folks. Good jobs don’t always have good benefits.

Of course, there’s different strokes for different folks, if you know what I mean. And what I mean is: Different styles of cinematography (kỹ thuật làm phim) will appeal to different audiences (khán giả).

At the age of 27, it feels as though most people I know who are the same age as me are either getting married, or are married and having children. I’m not putting that down by any means. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

While each had a first individual gallery show at about the same time, in the years since, Jonassen has mostly given her work away or stashed (cất giấu) it under her bed. Christwood will be only her second show. Different strokes for different folks, obviously.

"Knock it together" nghĩa là gì?

Ước mơ hồi nhỏ của bao người. Photo by Miryam León on Unsplash

"Knock/throw something together" = cùng đập/ ném -> va chạm/ tập hợp điều gì đó vào phút chót/ xây dựng hoặc sản xuất thứ gì đó kém chất lượng, vội vàng.

Ví dụ
I don’t start with a rhythm (nhịp điệu). I start with a sound and I work with the words. Those two things are the most important and then, when I throw them together, I have a piece.

I’m still annoyed (vẫn khó chịu) enough by her plot line in Endgame that I can’t say I wouldn’t want to see ScarJo’s Natasha return from the dead (trở về từ cõi chết) and knock (Red) skulls together.

Even if it was some ramshackle plywood platform (nền gỗ dán xiêu vẹo) your dad threw together a few feet off the ground, it symbolized (tượng trưng) a sort of escape hatch (lối thoát) from reality; a private, parent-free club.

"Draw a veil over" nghĩa là gì?

Ra cái vẻ thần bí chút chút. Photo courtesy Nick Boileau

"Cast/ draw/ throw a veil over (something)" = che giấu, lấp liếm (bằng cách nói lảng đi, hoặc không nói tới).

Ví dụ
So shameful (đáng xấu hổ) is it you’d think the British would want to draw a veil over it. But not so.

It has often been supposed (thường được cho là) to cast a veil over the personality of a limited company (công ty TNHH) through which the courts (tòa án) cannot see.

Kean’s determination (quyết tâm) to look ahead to a new start (hướng tới khởi đầu mới) in a new country should not, however, be seen as an attempt (nỗ lực) to draw a veil over the recent past.

You can’t be too careful can you? Anyway, nobody nowadays seems to want to draw a discreet (kín đáo) veil over any private activity (hoạt động riêng tư) they might be indulging in (ham mê, chìm đắm).

"Burn in effigy" nghĩa là gì?

"Burn someone in effigy" hoặc "burn an effigy of someone" = đốt một hình nộm hoặc hình tượng trưng một người đáng ghét.

Ví dụ
My neighbour burnt an effigy of me, threatened to rape (đe dọa hãm hiếp) my daughter and terrorised (khủng bố) me for FIVE years – the stress caused me to miscarry (sảy thai) my baby.

Women activists (nhà hoạt động) of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Janwadi Mahila Samiti took out a protest march (diễu hành phản đối) here on Sunday and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister (Bộ trưởng) Manohar Lal Khattar for allegedly making a reference (cáo buộc liên quan) to Kashmiri girls.

The members of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) burnt the effigy of Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health (Bộ trưởng Bộ Y tế), and continued boycott (tẩy chay) of elective duties (nhiệm vụ dân cử) and emergency services (dịch vụ khẩn cấp) in the State on Sunday to protest against (phản đối) the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill.

"Go to the dogs" nghĩa là gì?

Để tui ăn cho! Photo courtesy: F Suwarna

"Go to the dogs" = cho chó ăn -> chỉ mọi thứ ngày càng trở nên tệ hại, tệ hơn so với lúc trước, ngày càng sa đọa. Một số nói nguồn gốc của cụm này xuất phát từ thức ăn cũ, không ăn nữa sẽ đem cho chó ăn.

Ví dụ
Speaking of going to the dogs — Wade Won is a veterinarian (bác sĩ thú ý) who is now working as a diagnostic imaging resident (bác sĩ nội trú) at Mississippi State University, where he reads The Blade online.

Hercule Holmes wrote: “Weston Super Mare has been left to go to the dogs for the last 50 years […] No investment, no support for entrepreneurs (nhà kinh doanh), no attempt to turn these towns into anything nice.”

They are appalled (kinh hoàng) at the fact that the PN and PL have allowed our public transport system to go to the dogs, while the levels of asthma (bệnh hen suyễn) caused by the uncontrolled car emissions have now reached gargantuan (khổng lồ) proportions, making us the first country in the European continent – and the eighth in the whole world – as regards asthma in children.

"Burn to a crisp" nghĩa là gì?

Có vẻ hơi cháy, nhưng nhìn vẫn thèm. Photo courtesy Chris Campbell

"Burn something to a crisp/ cinder" = làm cháy thành than, cháy khô đét.

Ví dụ
This creates a very warm and cozy atmosphere (bầu không khí ấm áp, ấm cúng). Everything is cute, to the point where even watching a dragon burn a guy to a crisp was kind of a pleasant visual (hình ảnh dễ chịu).

Salander's antisocial behaviors (hành vi chống xã hội) include tossing (ném) a Molotov cocktail at her murderous (sát thủ) Russian spy father and watching him burn to a crisp in the front seat of his Mercedes.

You’ve got a mound of mushy vegetables (đống rau nhũn) sticking to a deteriorating wok (chảo hỏng) on one burner, chicken burning to a crisp in a frying pan on another, all while your pot of polenta (nồi cháo ngô) bubbles over onto the stove, scorching you with (làm bạn bỏng) scalding corn grit shrapnel (mẩu ngô nghiền nóng).

"Dog days" nghĩa là gì?

Tới tháng của chú rồi đấy! Photo courtesy: Josh Hawkins

"Dog days" có từ "dog" xuất phát từ ngôi sao tiếng Hy Lạp "α Canis Majoris", nghĩa đen là chó con. Người xưa coi chòm sao này là sức nóng, hạn hán, bão, chó dại và xui xẻo. Ngày nay, "dog days" được xem là những ngày nóng nhất, khó chịu nhất của mùa hè.

Ví dụ
This week, readers wanted bright and light flavors to combat (chiến đấu) the dog days of summer.

The dog days of summer are here. It’s hot, sometimes miserably so. Humans are hot. Dogs are hot. All creatures great and small are hot.

Over the past few years, there’s been an interloper (kẻ xâm phạm) in the dog days of summer, a period when the concert season slows to a trickle (nhỏ giọt). The Time Spans festival, put on since 2015 by the Earle Brown Music Foundation Charitable Trust, has filled a bare corner of the New York calendar — not with seasonal pops, but with contemporary music of the most dense, bristly and brilliant variety.

"Catch your breath" nghĩa là gì?

Cháy lên mấy đứa! Photo courtesy: Amy M

"Catch one's breath" nghĩa là ngừng lại và nghỉ sau khi hoạt động thể chất để có thể thở đều lại bình thường; lấy hơi.

Ví dụ
Tokyo stocks fell Monday as investors caught their breath following a strong advance over the two previous sessions.

Catching my breath, letting it go
Turning my cheek for the sake of this show
Now that you know, this is my life
I won't be told what's supposed to be right
(Bài hát Catch my breath của ca sĩ Kelly Clarkson)

To kick things off (bắt đầu) on Sept. 28, acting legend Woody Harrelson will be hosting, and pop star Billie Eilish will take the SNL stage to hype up the crowd even more. Things only get bigger the following Saturday, when acclaimed British actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) will pull the hosting duties, and as the musical guest — let me catch my breath — the queen herself, Taylor Swift, will be performing.

"Flip somebody off' nghĩa là gì?

Fork you! Photo courtesy: Chris Hausbeck

"Flip somebody off' = giơ ngón giữa với ai đó -> hành động khiếm nhã thể hiện thái độ không hài lòng hoặc giận dữ.

Ví dụ
I got really mad at Steve and I flipped him off!

We walk outside into the soft, late-summer air and unlock our bikes. A friend stands on the corner. “See ya later Lance!” he yells. I flip him off and laughing, we pedal over the culvert (cống) and across the tracks toward home, our red tailights dancing in the dark.

I have noticed with increasing frequency that when I signal to change lanes, I often see a car way behind me going about twice the speed limit, who rather than slowing down for my obvious signaled legal maneuver (điều khiển) speeds up while I am changing lanes. They then honk their horn, come as close as they can to the bumper (cản xe), flip me off, then race around me while cursing out the window.

"For all is worth" nghĩa là gì?

Hễ làm chuyện gì, thì cứ làm hết sức mình. Photo by Gene Devine

"For all (one) is worth" = Xứng đáng/giá trị cho ai -> Làm hết sức/hết khả năng hoặc tới giới hạn cao nhất về khả năng của bản thân.

Ví dụ
Norrie is priced a little short for his date with French qualifier Gregoire Barrere while Dart, who possesses (sở hữu) a decent temperament (tính khí tao nhã), will battle for all she is worth against Ana Bogdan.

McIlroy finished with the best non-Tiger strokes-gained (được giành trận stroke) season in PGA Tour history (or at least since 2003, when the statistic was first tracked). That metric underlines, italicizes and bolds McIlroy's steadiness from start to finish in the 2018-'19 season. For what it is worth, Koepka finished ninth in the category (phân hạng).

With so many creative tools and inspirations (niềm cảm hứng), it’s easy to feel lost amidst the sea of choice. Limited only by imagination, (and maybe budget too,) these tools make for fun times exploring, innovating, and providing photographers with an opportunity to find their own unique, artistic style (phong cách nghệ thuật độc nhất). In the words of photographic pioneer (người tiên phong), George Eastman: “Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”

"Seen one, seen them all" nghĩa là gì?

Phim Drama nào mà chẳng có nội dung tựa tựa như nhau. Photo by  Jakob Owens

"Seen one, seen them all" = Thấy một thì cũng như thấy hết tất cả -> Tât cả mọi thứ đều giống nhau một cách chính xác, biết một trong những điều này/điều kia thì cũng đủ để biết tất cả chúng. Cụm này cũng được dùng với những động từ khác như "Read", "Heard", "Done".

Ví dụ
And yet wealthy people (người giàu có) live exactly the same lives – only they have more money and ... "Seen one, seen them all – it's just that some people dress better.

Ultimately (cuối cùng, sau rốt), it’s wonderful to see the Ferguson twins branch off and become their own person. It was always weird (kỳ quặc) watching the two of them group together during rose ceremonies on the reality dating series. While they look exactly alike-seen one, seen them all, Emily and Haley are two separate beautiful women, each of whom deserves to find love on their own.

I stood at the side of the stage. Over approximately 12 hours of music two things struck me. The music sounded the same, all the time, and no-one was mixing. Big names. Credible names. I’m a little lost without my glasses, so the black outfits (trang phục) also made them look alike, seen one, seen them all. I was heartened that at one point one had the good grace (ân điển, ân sủng) to stand out a bit and don some headphones as a novelty hat for the duration (khoảng thời gian) of his set.

ông b thắc mắc:

ông a kể:

- vậy là đúng - ông b đáp,

ông a bức xúc:
- vậy mà hôm qua, tôi báo tin sắp được làm bố một đứa bé nữa, cô ta lại đập cái xoong vào đầu tôi, đúng là quá đáng mà.

"Black as night" = Đen như đêm tối -> Rất đen hoặc rất tối tăm.

Ví dụ
THE sky is as black as night when Mat Tildesley sets off to capture big waves crashing on the reef (mép) breaks along the Bicheno coastline (bờ biển).

Black as night and filled with lime (đá vôi) soft serve, the chocolate horns and purple sugar make for adorable theming (chủ đề), (and delicious eating).

- rồi làm sao phân biệt lý nào với lý nào?
- khó chi, phân biệt bằng họ chớ :D

"Hit-and-run" nghĩa là gì?

Tớ sẽ mách mẹ. Photo courtesy: Mike Bowers

"Hit-and-run" = đụng rồi chạy -> chỉ tài xế gây tai nạn xong rồi bỏ chạy, không báo công an và tìm cách giúp người bị tai nạn hoặc trong quân sự thì đây là một thuật ngữ có nghĩa là tấn công chớp nhoáng.

Ví dụ
In December 2004, she was involved in a hit-and-run car accident in Los Angeles, California, after she switched lanes and struck another vehicle.

A man killed in a hit-and-run near San Jose State University last week has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as Fernando Arturo Alvarez, 20, of Modesto.

The KCR-60M was originally conceived (hình thành) by Indonesian defense planners as a ‘hit-and-run’ platform that could swiftly (nhanh chóng) deploy (triển khai) guided anti-ship missiles against larger surface combatants (chiến sĩ), before quickly receding into the archipelagic (quần đảo) background. Hội những người Cool ngầu. Photo by  Robson Hatsukami Morgan

"The old-boy network" = Mạng lưới/hội bạn già chơi với nhau -> Hệ thống liên lạc của những người bạn chung trường học, tổ chức or clubs để hỗ trợ/giúp đỡ lẫn nhau.

Ví dụ
However, Shanks argued the case for gender equality (bình đẳng giới tính) on Newstalk ZB on Friday morning, saying the notion (quan điểm, khái niệm) of an old boy network within sport needed to be replaced by diverse (đa dạng) thinking.

The enduring power of the old boy network has been laid bare by a study that found alumni (hội cựu sinh viên) from nine leading public schools are 94 times more likely to reach the elite (ưu tú, cao cấp) than those who attended other schools.

Graft (sự hối lộ) and corruption (sự tham nhũng). Good old boy network. A budget stuffed with fluff (nạm bông), and waste. As the campaign to replace term-limited Mayor Bob Buckhorn grinds (áp bức, đè nén) on toward the March 5 election, a portrait (chân dung) of a clubby city ruled by personal connections has emerged from the candidates' responses at forums and their own campaign messages.

"A change of heart" = Sự đổi lòng -> Sự thay đổi trong quan điểm và cảm xúc trước một vấn đề.

Ví dụ
Things look bad for Ross but his life is saved when, after having a change of heart, George (of all people) comes to his rescue (sự giải cứu).

Once a passionate promoter of Hindu-Muslim amity (tình hữu nghị), Vaibhav Purandhare writes how Savarkar had a change of heart during his time at the Cellular Jail. He came out of prison driven by a desire to remake his country in the name of Hindutva or Hindu nationalism the Indian nation is seen as a nation based on Hinduness, the author writes.

The reasons job seekers (người tìm công việc) ghosted potential employers (nhân viên tiềm năng) varied: Over half just decided the job wasn’t right for them, and 40% ghosted after receiving another offer. About a quarter (một phần tư) of ghosters couldn’t face telling the employer they had a change of heart; 13% mention general communication problems with the recruiter; and 11% just didn’t know what to do, so they disappeared.

"Booby prize" nghĩa là gì?

Giải thưởng của bạn là một tràng pháo tay!!! Photo by: Gabriel Alenius on Unsplash

"Booby prize" -> nghĩa là (trò đùa) giải dành cho người về bét một cuộc đua.

Ví dụ
Oversweet (quá ngọt) borscht, tasteless chicken in dry blintzes (bánh kếp), unpleasant heavy meatballs, stodgy dumpling, greasy (béo ngậy) latkas, damp strudel pastry, and what we suspect were tinned carrots, all extremely unattractively presented, win our gastronomic booby prize.

Even if Apoel do lose, the booby prize would be ideal for Ioannou; by qualifying (đủ điều kiện) for the Europa League there is a chance he could be reunited (tái hội ngộ) with former teammates McTominay and Rashford and finally taste the Old Trafford atmosphere (không khí).

Appearing at the prize-giving, where Princess Charlotte left her mother and grandmother laughing in mock-shock after poking her tongue out at the crowd, the two children saw their mother cheerfully (vui vẻ) pick up an enormous (khổng lồ) wooden spoon (thìa gỗ) as a booby prize.

"On the long finger" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Sayo Garcia on Unsplash

"On the lòng finger" = (đặt cái gì) trên ngón tay dài -> nghĩa là hoãn lại/để sau hoặc trong trạng thái trì hoãn/do dự.

Ví dụ
What is the biggest mistake that you’ve made in business?
Not hiring (thuê) early enough, unfortunately looking for someone when you need them is often too late. It’s a case of when you know you might want somebody or need somebody, you are kind of putting it on the long finger in terms of, it’s chicken and egg between when the work is coming in and when you need staff etc. You need to hire before you need the person definitely (rõ ràng).

I think I’ve learned how to keep a lid on existential (tồn tại) crisis (khủng hoảng) when it rears it’s head, then something happens to throw a spanner in the works. It’s what it is to be human, I suppose, and we need answers, so we constantly ask the unanswerable questions. The one certainty is we are going to die, yet we spend our lives keeping the surety of that on the long finger. As the Dalai Lama would say, resistance is futile (vô ích).

"Being an Irish lad (thanh niên), you just take things in your stride (bước đi dài). I'm not going to forget about my life just because I won Love Island," he said. However, he is putting a planned surgery on the long-finger for now as the strapping Irishman reckons that it's the "worst time ever to get your face chopped up."

"Feel her ears burning" nghĩa là gì?

Tự dưng thấy nhột nhột. Photo by Sarah Pflug from Burst

"Feel one's ears burning" = cảm thấy tai nóng bừng -> hẳn là có ai đang nói xấu mình.

Ví dụ
I could feel my ears burning. I'm glad to meet you, too, Karla. Bryson told me a lot about you, as well.

There’s a long-running (lâu đời) old wives’ tale that if your ears are burning, it’s because someone is talking about you.

Stopping what he was doing, he leant back against the worktop and folded his arms (khoanh tay). 'You don't like me,' he said thoughtfully (thận trọng). 'Why is that, Beth?' She could feel her ears burning.

If you've ever felt your ears burning, it's probably not because somebody's talking about you, as the old saying goes. Rather, burning ears are often a sign of something going on in your body or the result of environmental conditions (điều kiện môi trường).

"One in a hundred" nghĩa là gì?

Nổi bật giữa đám đông :) Photo by: Nick Fewings on Unsplash

"One in a hundred" = một trong một trăm -> nghĩa là rất không phổ biến, rất hiếm, độc nhất hoặc xuất sắc.

Ví dụ
In the Farrelly Brothers’ 1994 movie, “Dumb and Dumber,” Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) is assessing his chances to date socialite (người có vai vế trong xã hội, người nổi bật lên trong xã hội, người giao thiệp rộng) Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly). One in a hundred, he asks? Mary: I’d say more like one in a million. Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance? We mention this because on Tuesday night, Lowell’s City Council played its Lloyd Christmas card, voting to ask a federal judge (thẩm phán) to alter (thay đổi) a consent decree on the future makeup of the council and School Committee.

When researchers (nhà nghiên cứu) asked pig farmers in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam, whether they routinely (thường xuyên) added antibiotics (thuốc kháng sinh) to their animal feed to make them grow faster, only one in a hundred said yes. Fears had been growing that the practice, which fattens swine (vỗ béo) and also wards off (đẩy lùi) infection (nhiễm trùng), was widespread, but hard data was scarce (hiếm), so the study’s results – obtained by researchers from Australia and Vietnam in 2018 – were reassuring (yên lòng).

Carrier defenses (hệ thống phòng vệ) are layered (cài) to provide in-depth protection. Carrier strike groups (nhóm tấn công) arrange their defensive perimeters (vành đai) in layers (theo từng lớp) that reach out hundreds of miles, so that any enemy seeking to get within targeting range must overcome multiple hurdles (rào cản). That applies to hostile (thù địch) missiles, manned aircraft, submarines or any other potentially threatening system. The virtue (ưu điểm) of layered defense is that no layer needs to be perfect to protect the carrier. For instance, if each of three layers is 80% effective, the number of successful penetrators (xâm nhập) (.2 times .2 times .2) would likely be less than one in a hundred.
