"Cat in the sack" nghĩa là gì?

Tôi đã chuyển tiền được 4 tiếng rồi mà sao lượt like chưa tăng là sao! Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

"Cat in the sack" (con mèo ở trong bao bố) là thành ngữ chỉ một trò lừa, mưu mẹo hay một giao dịch gì đó đáng ngờ.

Ví dụ
“The truth has started coming out of Pandora’s box. He (CEC) couldn’t hold the cat in the sack for a long time. He spoke the truth slipping his mouth (buột miệng),” Rizvi said in a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka this noon.

The Kremlin was more comfortable with the old president because it was clear how to act. But [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko said during the debate that Volodymyr Zelensky is a 'cat in the sack.' This is absolutely a cat in the sack for the Kremlin. That's what scares the Kremlin," she said,

AIPAC misleads (đánh lừa) American officials and presents the two-state solution as an Israeli interest and as the position of the State of Israel, even though the two-state solution is not the position,” he said in a press release. The anti-BDS resolution (nghị quyết) is a “cat in the sack,” he went on, positing (cho rằng) that the members of Congress (Quốc Hội) relied on AIPAC and thus unwittingly (vô tình) backed (ủng hộ) a call for a Palestinian state. “It’s a scandal.”

"I was up all night with a sick friend" = Tôi đã thức cả đêm để chăm người bạn đang bị ốm -> Một sự biện hộ/viện cớ phổ biến cho việc không có mặt ở nơi mà người đó nên ở vào đêm trước.

Ví dụ
My wife always believes in everything I say to her and even my excuses like "I was up all night with a sick friend" whenever I have a night out and not come back home.

Last night, I couldn't go back home because I spent all night with my girl in the bar, and I think my mom will be extremely crazy at me but she's got better after hearing my excuse "I was up all night with a sick friend".

Some have become endurance (sức bền, chịu đựng) tests for trophy-hunting hikers, while many can be broken down into manageable chunks for recreational ramblers (người đi dạo chơi), or those of us looking for an excuse for a pub lunch like "I was up all night with a sick friend". Whatever your walking mojo, you’ll want to rest and rejuvenate (làm trẻ lại, làm khỏe lại) with an overnight stay.

"Have a bad night" nghĩa là gì?

Ngủ bù cho đêm qua. Photo by Kalegin Michail

"Have a bad night" = Có một đêm thật tệ -> Không ngủ ngon suốt cả đêm.

Ví dụ
“We had a really great night on defense (phòng ngự) and special teams,” Nettleton coach Ken Topps said. “We didn’t have a bad night on offense (tấn công), and we just have to fine tune some things. The weather was bad, and we sat there and waited for two hours to be able to play.”

I've yet to have a bad night's sleep since I started using this comforter. The only downside (bất lợi) is that it could be a little wider. I ordered the king-size comforter (106 inches by 90 inches), and it barely covers the sides of my standard king-size bed. Aside from that, I really love everything else about this comforter.

Sleep deprived (túng quẫn, thiếu thốn) workers are also common in Phoenix and San Diego, where residents are regularly experiencing restless nights, with only 24 percent of the population in both cities getting 7+ hours of sleep every night. However, San Diego comes in as the worst city for good quality sleep with 61 percent of people regularly getting a bad night’s sleep.

When the crops (vụ mùa) are dry and brown, the combines start their march across the land, lights and engines scouring (cọ sạch) the fields far into the night.

"Warm up to someone/ something" có nghĩa là trở nên cởi mở, bắt đầu thích hay trở nên tha thiết hơn đối với ai/ điều gì hoặc trở nên nhạy cảm và dễ bảo hơn.

Ví dụ
To his relief (nhẹ nhõm), she had remained very professional the whole day, and seemed to warm up to him again after lunch. As he left, she smiled—not expecting a hug or kiss good-bye. That was to his liking.

Tan said that he got into a lot of arguments with Sophia because of these tensions. However, determined (quyết tâm) to get his family to warm up to her, he would constantly encourage (không ngừng khuyến khích) his then-girlfriend to visit his family.

Then I looked over at the hangging birdcage (lồng chim), only to see no parakeet in the cage. Awhile back, Randy had bought him a parakeet (vẹt đuôi dài) as a way of getting Opus to warm up to him. I walked over to the cage and saw the little blue parakeeet lying still at the bottom of his cage, with its neck off to one side.

"Warm as toast = ấm như bánh mì nướng -> thoải mái và ấp áp (đặc biệt là khi thời tiết bên ngoài rất lạnh)

Ví dụ
I noticed that the Canadian horses seemed unfazed (không bị ảnh hưởng) by the cold, nasty weather because they were warm as toast even if they were covered in ice.

Sara hadn't changed the thermostats (bộ ổn nhiệt) on the radiators (bộ tản nhiệt) yet, and Gran's flat was probably as warm as toast, while up here the heating was turned down low.

People would complain (than vãn) about their cold feet, you know, at the bus stop or somewhere, and I'd laugh quietly because mine were always warm as toast.

There was a fire burning in the grate (lò sưởi)– Lucy had insisted on it despite Papa's weak protestations (sự phản đối) that he was as warm as toast and she was to stop fussing (om sòm, rối rít)– but it did little to warm the bare, chilly room.

"Be like ships that pass in the night" = Như những chiếc tàu trôi qua đêm -> Chỉ những người chỉ thoáng gặp nhau chốc lát. Thường là những người sống cùng nhau nhưng ít khi gặp nhau.

Ví dụ
The Newsnight presenter, a mother of two, has admitted her high-flying career (nghề nghiệp bay cao) in current affairs has had an effect on her family life, and that she and her husband are ‘like ships that pass in the night’.

Most people have never heard of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the 19th-century American poet, scholar (học giả) and translator of Dante. But there is one fragment (khúc, đoạn) of his writing every-one will be familiar with, namely the phrase 'ships that pass in the night'.

“It’s just part of my day,” she says. “If I’ve not ran, like on a rest day, I just feel like something is missing. Rest days are few and far between and they are important for recovery (sự hồi phục). During the week I don’t really see my partner Perrie, but he’s really supportive. We can be like ships that pass in the night so we make sure we always do something together on the weekends.”

"Take a free ride" nghĩa là gì?

Cái gì miễn phí đều không thể bỏ qua. Photo by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

"Take a free-ride" nghĩa là có được sự ưu tiên, lợi thế đặc biệt mà không cần bất kỳ khoản phí nào (thường là không công bằng).

Ví dụ
C’mon and take a free ride. A new free service using six-person, street-legal electric golf carts (xe điện) will launch Sept. 7.

As it turns out (hóa ra), people in groups are more likely to want to take a free ride—enjoy the benefits of wine and food and company without paying for it.

Of course if this is true for one fisherman (ngư dân) then it is also true for all and the agreement will be shortlived (rút ngắn) as everyone will attempt to take a free-ride on the back of others (thus the freerider problem).

Some groups, like environmentalists (nhà môi trường học), achieve an intermediate degree of success: an active lobby (vận động hành lang) pursues the policy interests (lợi ích chính sách) of a core of loyal supporters, while others with similar views take a free ride.

On the way to Mars, the helicopter will hitch a ride on the rover’s belly, covered by a shield (tấm chắn) to protect it during the descent and landing (hạ cánh).

Now, thanks to an initiative (sáng kiến) from Cycling Without Age, seniors in Minneapolis and St. Paul are able to hitch a ride on a Danish trishaw (xích-lô) to get out and about (ra ngoài hoạt động).

"Stir the pot" = khuấy cái nồi -> thích tạo ra những căng thẳng và xung đột cho người khác.

Ví dụ
My younger brother always stirs the pot by getting into arguments with my parents.

Many times I’ve read this person’s comments/responses to others. Surely he is writing in jest (giễu cợt) and hoping to “stir the pot.” With that said let’s reverse his thinking on this particular issue and put it in my words and world.

Although Channel Nine is yet to announce the cast, insiders claim the network has recruited Jessika Power and Ines Basic to star in the hit series. Known for their controversial (gây tranh cãi) carryon, a source close to the situation revealed that the unlikely Married At First Sight stars have been cast to stir the pot and lift the show's ratings.

"Ride/run roughshod over" có nghĩa là hà hiếp áp chế, chà đạp người khác. "Roughshod" là móng ngựa sắt có đinh chìa.

Ví dụ
This is what has just happened to the residents and the early childhood centre in the Te Mata Rd/Durham Drive area of Havelock North. We must not allow giant, faceless corporates (tập đoàn không có bộ mặt người/vô nhân tính) to ride roughshod through and over our communities.

As the government rides roughshod over the mounting (tăng lên) public anger about the chopping of age-old trees (chặt cây cổ thụ) to make way for the widening of roads, a new page is being turned in environmental protection awareness (nhận thức bảo vệ môi trường).

Boris Johnson cannot be allowed to ride roughshod over parliamentary democracy (dân chủ nghị viện) and impose a view that represents, at best, the view of some hundred thousand Conservative (Đảng bảo thủ) members who crowned the Prime Minister. Johnson has no mandate (nhiệm vụ) beyond this.

"(As) tight as a drum" = căng như da của mặt trống. Nghĩa bóng là bịt kín quá chặt hoặc an toàn đến nỗi nước hoặc không khí không thể thoát ra hay xâm nhập vào.

Ví dụ
Sergeant Zorn's red jacket is stretched tight as a drum across his substantial gut (thắt chặt ruột).

The man with the one steely eye (ánh mắt nghiêm khắc) is slightly smaller than Michael, and he looks to be as old as the doctor, but he's as tight as a drum. As he extends his hand to shake Michael's, Michael notices that one of his fingers is completely gone, and another one is missing.

Opening with “Message in a Bottle,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” and “Englishman in New York,” the performance was tight as a drum, honed (mài giũa) in an ongoing world tour showcasing his biggest songs both from The Police and his solo career — the greatest hits he recently re-arranged and re-recorded (phối lại và thu âm lại) for the 2019 album “My Songs.”

"A one-night stand" nghĩa là gì?

Người lạ ơi hãy cho tôi một bờ vai. Photo by Manuel Meurisse

"A one-night stand" = Tình một đêm

Ví dụ
Explaining why their relationship didn't go any further, Port said, "I was nervous. I had never had a one-night stand." As a result, she "didn't want to be with him alone … I was way too nervous to do it and then I lost my chance and it's really one of my bigger regrets in life."

Set in Derry, Northern Ireland, the film centers on Pamela (Gallagher), a fun-loving single mother (người mẹ đơn thân) whose lonely, buttoned-up (cài khuy áo) teenage daughter Allegra (Petticrew) disapproves (phản đối) of her lifestyle. Their relationship is further strained (căng thẳng, miễn cưỡng) when the forty-something Pamela becomes pregnant after a one-night stand with a plumber (thợ ống nước) half her age who is not ready for fatherhood.

From there, the trio (tam tấu) formulated (đề ra, phát biểu có hệ thống) the song, which is all about setting the rules for a one-night stand: "It’s just a room key, you ain’t gotta lie to me / Can’t you just use me like I’m using you? / How it goes is, the bar closes / There’s no king bed covered in roses / Just a room without a view / I don’t want a number you ain’t gonna answer / Let’s just stick to the one night standards."

“I said 'I want a night out with Crouchy', so I went on a night out with Crouchy,” beamed (tươi cười rạng rỡ) the Ireland striker yesterday.

Princess Diana, who is affectionately (âu yếm, trìu mến) known as “The People’s Princess,” is rumored (đồn đại) to have spent a night out with Freddie Mercury one evening. The pair had a close relationship, and she didn’t miss out on an opportunity to hang out with him while in disguise (cải trang, che đậy) at a legendary (huyền thoại) London gay pub in the 1980s.

"How long is a piece of string" nghĩa là gì?

"How long is a piece of string?" = đoạn dây thì dài bao nhiêu. Được sử dụng như một câu trả lời cho câu hỏi như "How long will it take?" hoặc "How big is it?" khi chiều dài hoặc kích thước không xác định, vô hạn hoặc hay biến đổi.

Ví dụ
How much lower can they go? How long is a piece of string? Recent history proves that zero and even negative interest rates (lãi suất âm) weren't able to sustainably (không thể chứng minh được) reflate (tái lạm phát) individual domestic economies.

The question basically came down to are third-party (bên thứ ba) smartphone repairers safe? The answer is “How long is a piece of string?” So begins a ‘discussion’ on the pitfalls (nguy hiểm, cạm bẫy) of smartphone repairs that raises some of the issues you should be aware of.

The Oil & Gas Authority (Cục Dầu Khí) said it could not give a timescale for the conclusion of its “open-ended” investigation (điều tra nghiên cứu) into Monday’s 2.9-magnitude tremor (cường độ chấn động), which followed fracking (công nghệ khai thác dầu) by Cuadrilla last week. An OGA spokesman said it was “a case of how long is a piece of string?”.

"Three-dog night" nghĩa là gì?

"Three-dog night" = Đêm ba con cún -> Đêm rất lạnh/lạnh buốt giá nên cần cún nằm trên giường cùng sưởi ấm cho nhau.

Ví dụ
"They were thankful for the response speed, and saving them from a three-dog night in an exposed (vạch trần) location."

Through Tonight: It’s another three-dog as clear skies and calmer winds promote ideal cooling conditions. Lows range from the mid-teens to low 20s most spots. Winds are from the west around 5 to 10 mph.

High winds can also make this transition occur earlier, especially when combined with some extremely three-dog nights even when water temps have been hovering (lơ lửng) in the mid 50-degree range. Some years it can even be delayed until water temps get closer to 40 degrees (water is most dense (dày đặc) at 39.2 degrees). This is more rare and happens in stable weather with slow water temp drops and minimal wind ... that doesn’t happen here!

"March to the beat of a different drum/ (one's) own drum" = bước hành quân theo nhịp trống khác -> hành động/ hành xử khác (thường là không phù hợp) với tiêu chuẩn xã hội hay các quy tắc thông thường hoặc hành xử khác với người khác.

Ví dụ
“Me? I always march to the beat of my own drum, and I have always lived with a heart that’s open (tấm lòng cởi mở), so I welcome all changes in my life,” he says quietly.

But leaders in the West Virginia Legislature (Lập pháp) decided to march to the beat of a different drum by tossing out (loại bỏ) the going rate (hồi suất hiện hành) altogether.

Until you have experienced Piazzolla's The Four Seasons, you haven't really lived. Your heart will probably beat to a different drum when he is done, and you will be better for it.

He’s a 5-year-old domestic short-hair cat who likes to march to the beat of his own drum. Oreo doesn’t have any experience with dogs or other cats yet but he warms up to (trở nên hứng thú, nồng nhiệt) people very quickly.

"Thief in the night" = Tên trộm ban đêm -> Hành vi/cử động nhanh, bí ẩn và lén la lén lút.

Ví dụ
Surrounded by pictures of her loving family, Strydom’s mother, Martie Strydom, said that the illness creeps (lẻn vào, ập đến) up like a thief in the night.

She took her own life before she could be executed, but was still burned at the stake. However her remains were snatched (bị vồ lấy) by a thief in the night sometime in the 1860s.

Speaking of “global warming,” the Bible has a global “warming-warning” of its own: “the day of the Lord will come (đến, giáng lâm) as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent (sôi sùng sục) heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up (bị thiêu đốt).

"Dig your own grave" nghĩa là gì?

Có ai không, cứu vớiiii Photo by Frans Van Heerden from Pexels

'Dig one's own grave' = tự đào mồ chôn ai -> tự chuốc lấy họa cho mình, làm việc gì dẫn tới hậu quả dễ thấy trước

Ví dụ
Jan and his family paid the ultimate price for harbouring Jewish people on his estate during German occupation. He was instructed to dig his own grave before he and his family were finally executed (chấp hành, thực hiện).

And Tayshia is more than happy to remove herself from the drama. “I’d rather just wipe my hands clean and walk away and be like, ‘You know what, you can dig your own grave,’ ” she says. Blake is then seen tripping and hitting a rock while catching a ball on the beach. “Karma,” Tayshia says as the women share a laugh.

On Saturday morning (Aug. 3), while on a short pilgrimage (hành hương) to Taoyuan, Han was chastised (đánh đập) by a Chinese man from Shanghai and his Taiwanese wife. They gave the thumbs down to Han. The Taiwanese woman called out to the mayor, saying, “Han Kuo-yu, kneel at China’s Taiwan Affairs Office. Aren’t you embarrassed (ngượng, xấu hổ)?” The Chinese man said, “Look at Hong Kong! Loser! I am a Chinese visitor! I’m telling you, the suffering we Chinese endure in China will be the fate of Taiwanese. If you go on like this, you will dig your own grave!”

"The watches of the night" = Đồng hồ ban đêm -> Thời điểm, giờ giấc lúc ban đêm khi ai đó thức giấc.

Ví dụ
On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow (cái bóng) of your wings.

In A study in Scarlet, we read: “I left Holmes seated in front of the smouldering fire (ngọn lửa âm ỉ), and long into the watches of the night I heard the low, melancholy (u sầu) wailings (than vãn) of his violin, and knew that he was still pondering (trầm tư) over the strange problem which he had set himself to unravel (làm sáng tỏ).”

St Luke describes in more detail — and it all takes place at night. “In the countryside close by, there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep during the watches of the night. An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord (sự vinh quang của Thiên Chúa) shone round them. They were terrified, but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour (Chúa cứu thế) has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.’”

'Live by/on one's wits' = sống dựa vào/bằng trí thông minh của ai -> dùng tài xoay xở để tồn tại, sống sót bằng trí thông minh

Ví dụ
I’m at the mercy (may mắn) of, how is it, the kindness of strangers. I’ve learned to live on almost nothing and live by my wits for years. I have a fairly low overhead. I can go for weeks without any business, then get real busy. There’s no internet, no website. Some people say I should, some say I’m better off without it.”

I used to hide my Princeton heritage (tài sản thừa kế). I didn’t want to be stereotyped (rập khuôn) as your typical upper-crust snob with a Princeton degree. Now I cherish it. My education made me, ignited (đốt cháy, kích thích) my intellectual curiosity, turned me into a lifelong learner, gave me the confidence to sail out on my own and live by my wits.

Although only 19 years old, he had no choice but to adapt to his role as a medic (bác sĩ, lính cứu thương). “Eventually what happens, you start seeing people that are killed and then realizing that you’re a 20-year-old or a 19-year-old kid, and you’ve got a medical bag that’s not appropriate to what you’re doing,” said Rascon. “Then all of a sudden, you've got to live by your wits and the skills of your self-teaching and the teachings of others, who are senior medics, and realize that, as a 19-year-old, you're not God. And you're about to see people that are going to get dismembered (mất chân tay), disemboweled (moi ruột), and people that are about to die in your arms. And you did not have the choice to come back and say I don’t want to take care of him. You had to.”

"The morning after the night before" = Buổi sáng sau đêm trước -> Dư vị khó chịu do dùng thức uống có nồng độ cồn cao/vết tích/dư âm.

Ví dụ
He told magistrates (quan tòa, thẩm phán): "It's the morning after the night before and she hadn't appreciated she'd still be over the limit."

The morning after the night before, and Newcastle United are where many people expected them to be: out of another cup competition after a first hurdle (sự vượt hàng rào) fall. In the only all Premier League tie in the Carabao Cup second round, the Magpies hosted Leicester City at St James’ Park.

Sometimes it can be hard to remember exactly what you did the morning after the night before. But if you can, cast your mind back to New Year's Eve (đêm giao thừa) 2005. Across the city and county people were celebrating in pubs and clubs - and luckily, we had some photographers out to capture (chụp ảnh) the festivities.

"Brevity is the soul of wit" nghĩa là gì?

How to vào hình một cách nghệ thuật Photo by Charry Jin from Pexels

'Brevity is the soul of wit' = ngắn gọn là linh hồn của sự dí dỏm -> những câu chuyện cười, chuyện hài sẽ buồn cười và thú vị khi nó được kể ngắn gọn. Các cụ ta nói rồi 'nói dài nói dai thành nói dại', các bạn nhỉ

Ví dụ
Kayak campaign proves brevity is the soul of wit. The travel site's new campaign through B.B.E. is funny, sharp and effective at 15 seconds, but a 90-second video morphs into something else entirely.

Brevity is the soul of wit, and this is especially true when it comes to kids telling jokes, as their adorable tendency to ramble often leads to long-winded jokes that end with convoluted (xoắn) punchlines. So rather than teach your kid long, complex jokes, go with funny one-liners

Perhaps the most difficult part was creating a list without acts who would make the top 10 of my 50 best rappers list (OutKast, The Roots). I’d appease (khuyên giải) a hell of a lot more people by expanding to a top 20 list, but brevity is the soul of wit and the beating heart of a dope tracklist

Brevity is the soul of wit, and we like the minimalism (chủ nghĩa tối giản) of this pair that offers just a hint of tropical swagger (vẻ phóng khoáng, hợp thời trang) with its palm tree silhouette on a white ribbed ground. Richer Poorer’s “Silver Lining Blend” sees cotton blended with silver fibers for odor control and added comfort.

"The dead of night" nghĩa là gì?

Nửa đêm ở Dead End. Photo by  Victória Kubiaki

"The dead of night" = Đêm im lặng -> Nửa đêm khuya thanh tịnh.

Ví dụ
Thirty-four people are feared dead after an inferno (cảnh rùng rợn) ripped through a dive boat off the coast of Southern California, trapping dozens of passengers (làm mắc kẹt hàng tá hành khách) below deck in the dead of night, authorities said.

Can you imagine sleeping in the dead of night beneath partly cloudy skies and nearly calm winds, knowing that, within 10 or 15 miles in all directions, you were entirely surrounded by a ring of 175-plus mph fury (sự mạnh mẽ, mãnh liệt) ? It’s simply unfathomable (không dò, không với tới được).

The details of Adie’s case are preserved in 1704 council meeting minutes, describing a building fanaticism (sự cuồng tín) among neighbors who believed a possibly drunk woman’s claims that Adie was “Coming to take me!” in the dead of night. They believed Adie was an instrument (dụng cụ, nhạc khí) of Satan, channeling the devil’s powers to “molest” (quấy rầy) neighbors she didn’t get along with.

Hãy hòa mình vào thiên nhiên để tâm trí được thư giãn Photo by Simon Migaj from Pexels

'Have/Keep one's wits about one' = giữ được tâm trí, bình tĩnh về bản thân mình -> giữ bình tĩnh, cảnh giác

Ví dụ
“I don’t care whether you know it’s an official or not, it’s your responsibility to have your wits about you that when a referee is near you,” Maas said. “You do not touch him. “We’ve made that very clear in our meetings (Wednesday) and our guys understand that going forward.”

The listing describes the home as “totally dilapidated (đổ nát, xiêu vẹo)”, and advises buyers keen to inspect to “have your wits about you due to its condition”. It’s still attracting attention, with agent Michael Montano, from Raine and Horne Leichhardt, identifying the scarcity (khan hiếm) of that type of property as a key factor in driving buyer interest.

Was the lad (chàng trai, thằng, gã) thing a bit of an act? “We knew that journalists wanted it,” says Pizzorno. “But at the same time, we did grow up where, if you wanted to be in a band, you had to have your wits about you. If you’re playing in a village pub in Leicester in front of a load of lads that would throw darts (phi tiêu) at your head for having long hair, you can either go in and be all art school, or you can snap a snooker cue in half and say, ‘Let’s go!’ But then I still wanted to get them in the corner and talk about Jodorowsky afterwards.”
