"Distance themselves from" nghĩa là gì?

Hey girl, tụi anh ngầu và rất giầu đó nha Photo by Innoh Khumbuza from Pexels

'Distance oneself from someone or something' = tự tạo khoảng cách với ai hay cái gì -> không tham gia, tham gia hạn chế vào cái gì hoặc liên kết, liên hệ với ai; không dính líu tới ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Many Kremlin-friendly candidates are disguising themselves as independents in a bid to distance themselves from the party, whose brand is now widely seen as a liability (khoản nợ).

“The key thing was it was a celebrity show and as an ex footballer I didn’t feel like a celebrity. I was trying to distance myself from it and didn’t want to feel my football was the reason I was getting into it,” he said.

“Living there left me very angry at God, who we profess to be powerful and all-loving but seemed to be distant in a place dubbed (được phong là) the ‘Holy Land,’” he said. “I’m not sure I have or will ever overcome my experiences in Israel-Palestine. There are days it still feels crippling and days I am able to distance myself from it.

The gambling (cờ bạc ăn tiền) partner had their license (cấp phép) suspended last month after reports of their website entertaining bets on children's sport and cockfighting, and last week Tottenham decided to distance themselves from the company after it was revealed the firm had been using Harry Kane's image to encourage people to gamble in Kenya.

"Get what she deserves" nghĩa là gì?

Anh nghĩ xứng với em sao? Photo by Luis Cruz from Pexels

'Get what one deserves' = nhận lại những gì họ xứng đáng được nhận -> nhận lại những điều xấu tương ứng với việc làm của ai, giống như 'gieo nhân nào gặt quả đấy' hoặc 'quả báo đến muộn' đó các bạn :D

Ví dụ
“We wanted to see it last year and obviously that didn’t work out. So he’s been busting his butt all offseason, working, and so to see him come out here and get what he deserves is great.”

According to B&B spoilers, Shauna Fulton (Denise Richards) will be horrified (làm khiếp sợ) when Brooke and Ridge see to it that Flo gets arrested. Bridge wants Flo to get what she deserves, and The Bold and the Beautiful spoilers say she’ll be handcuffed and arrested right in from of her mom.

Meanwhile, in Canada, Serena seems quite cushy (nhàn hạ, thoải mái) in her prison and is even potentially looking at being released, yet it's not long before the tables turn with Commander Waterford effectively ratting her out to the American agent, telling him that Serena induced Nick Blaine to impregnate (làm thụ thai) June, thus it still counting as a rape. It's a brief moment, but it shows just how quickly both the Waterfords turned on one another and how, at long last, Serena is about to get what she deserves.

"Fed up to the back teeth" nghĩa là gì?

Học hành mệt mỏi quá, làm giấc nào!! Photo by: Tonny Tran on Unsplash

"Fed up to the back teeth" = chán (ngấy) đến tận răng -> nghĩa là chán hoặc khó chịu với ai, cái gì.

Ví dụ
'We had to make some difficult decisions (quyết định) at this point,' said Peter. 'To be honest, we were fed up to the back teeth. Our second journey to Japan and still no luck. However, we were offered a slot the following week. There was no guarantee (đảm bảo) the weather would be right, although the indications (chỉ số) were for a dramatic change.'

Residents (hộ dân cư) are ‘fed up to the back teeth’ with a rise in anti-social behaviour and vandalism (hành động cố ý phá hoại hoặc làm hư hỏng các công trình nghệ thuật, tài sản công và tư, các thắng cảnh.....) in Littlehampton, according to one councillor (ủy viên hội đồng). The topic was raised last week by James Walsh (Lib Dem, Beach) who described (mô tả) how car screens and wing mirrors are being smashed, while open drug dealing is taking place on streets.

Speaking at the protest (cuộc biểu tình), IFA President Joe Healy said there is a “severe (khắt khe) income crisis (khủng hoảng) in beef” and some farmers had faced a “financial wipe-out” in recent months. “Farmers are angry and fed up to the back teeth of empty promises from politicians,” he said. “They keep promising – ‘Oh! we will look after (chăm sóc) you on Brexit’.”

"Deserve better from" nghĩa là gì?

Em nghĩ bói đâu được người như anh Photo by Hudson Marques from Pexels

'Deserve better from someone or something' nghĩa là xứng đáng được đối xử tốt hơn từ ai hay cái gì so với hiện tại.

Ví dụ
Public servants from Ohio deserve better from their representatives (người đại diện). We need to be supported as we age and be able to receive all our money to help us live out the rest of our lives.

“As I said following our defeat (đánh bại) (to SuperSport United), our supporters deserve better from a team like ours and for that reason, we have to double our efforts to ensure we get a favourable result on Saturday.”

Ireland and the EU deserve better from the UK. Theresa May forgot to think about the Republic of Ireland. Boris Johnson now thinks about it too much. Neither prime minister understands the complexity of the UK and England's long and troubled history with the island of Ireland.

He says internet users deserve better from the web giant. "Where there are categories in advertising which are being constantly exploited (khai thác), the expectation those would be monitored and properly looked after, but in general terms we have a high volume of businesses which have an excuse for not following your own rules."

"Cast your mind back" nghĩa là gì?

Một chút tưởng nhớ. Photo by Kimo Kremer on Unsplash

"Cast (one's) mind back" = cố nhớ lại. Thường đi với "to" theo sau là thời gian, sự kiện cụ thể

Ví dụ
If this seems hard to imagine (khó tưởng tượng), cast your mind back to the distant reaches (vùng xa xôi) of last summer, when it wasn’t the Amazon in the news but our own forest fires, which blanketed swaths (vùng cỏ bị bao trùm) of Western Canada in smoke.

Cast your mind back to 2009. It's almost like stepping back into a different geological era (kỷ nguyên địa chất). The iPhone was barely two years old, and a smartphone was a glamorous accessory (phụ kiện quyến rũ), not the device around which your entire life revolves.

“Johnson should cast his mind back to the European elections (bầu cử) in May, in which his party came fifth, and ask himself: does he want the Tories to find themselves in a similarly disastrous position (vị trí thảm hại) when the results of the next general election come in, or does he want to sign a non-aggression pact (hiệp ước không tấn công) with me and return to Downing Street?

"Cast a net wide" nghĩa là gì?

Cái gì không biết hỏi ngay anh Google. Photo by Benjamin Dada on Unsplash

"Cast (one's) net wide" hoặc "cast a net wide" = quăng lưới ra xa -> có nghĩa là cân nhắc nhiều khía cạnh, khả năng.

Ví dụ
Elliott suggests (đề nghị) casting a wide net at first and using online search engines (công cụ tìm kiếm) such as Google Flights to get a general idea of the price points that are available (mức giá hiện sẵn).

Andry has methodically built (xây dựng có phương pháp) the Trojans golf programs beginning with identifying (lấy làm mẫu) talented Indiana players, but the school also can cast a wide net, and some like Fahlen and Ross had fathers, brothers or uncles play before them.

You might also be on the older side and feeling pressured (either internally or from external sources (tác động trong hay ngoài) to find someone to settle down (ổn định) with sooner rather than later. If you cast your net wide, perhaps you’ll find a good catch; or perhaps you'll discover that polyamorous relationships (mối quan hệ đa ái - yêu nhiều người) are what you'd prefer.

"Deserve a medal" nghĩa là gì?

Chúc mừng nha Photo by Agung Pandit Wiguna from Pexels

'Deserve a medal' = xứng đáng nhận huân chương -> công nhận những nỗ lực, bền bỉ khi trải qua một thử thách hoặc tình huống mệt mỏi, buồn tẻ. Cụm từ thường được dùng với phong cách hài hước.

Ví dụ
Educators (người làm giáo dục) really do deserve a medal. Especially this "teacher who saved my son" and the awesome teacher giving everyone #classroomgoals.

Kudos to Fayette County Public Schools, where administrators deserve a medal for creativity (sáng tạo), problem solving and cutting costs, all very much needed in our public schools.

DOES your dedicated doctor deserve a medal? Whether it’s a GP, consultant, surgeon or a junior doctor, we want to know how they have made a difference to your life – and they could be crowned Best Doctor at our Who Cares Wins awards.

Compared to UT’s defensive alignment (xếp hàng phòng thủ) issues against Georgia State, the Vols deserve a medal for their pre-snap sets against BYU. Still, the Vols had their issues. It’s fair to wonder just who is in charge of UT’s defense considering Pruitt is a lifelong defensive coach and the Vols have a reshuffled defensive staff.

"Look like something the cat brought in" nghĩa là gì?

Này, nhìn xe cậu kìa, vừa chui ra ở xứ sở nào vậy? Photo by Kristian Karlsson on Unsplash

Thành ngữ "look like something the cat brought/dragged in" dùng để miêu tả những thứ hết đát, dơ bẩn, luộm thuộm (trông giống như vừa bị mèo tha/đào lên).

Ví dụ
"I haven't the face," says he. "Look at me!"
"I have," says I, "and, if you ask me, you look like something the cat brought in."
He winces (nhăn mặt) a little at that.

Unquestionably summer visitors stimulate (thúc đẩy) trade, but with a few exceptions they look like something the cat brought in. To see a stout (mập mạp, đẫy đà) summer visitor in shorts and bare‐legged (đi chân không) is to be taken into a new and dreadful (khủng khiếp) world.

One of the surprising conclusions from reading this book is that there are still all too many media prepared to print or broadcast, and subsequently defend (biện hộ) in court, the type of material to which the only appropriate response is a fairly large sum of media money. Another is that, at the other end of the scale, there are plenty of bullies (kẻ hay bắt nạt), frauds (kẻ gian lận) and touts (người phe vé/ chào hàng) who, with the help of eager (thiết tha/hăm hở) lawyers, can make decent (đứng đắn), honest journalism look like something the cat brought in and can persuade juries (hội thẩm) to gleefully (vui sướng) distribute (phân phát) large amounts of other people's cash to undeserving (không đáng) causes.

"In an age of years" nghĩa là gì?

Lâu quá rồi không đi biển. Photo by Ethan Robertson

"In an age of years" = Trong một thời gian rất lâu.

Ví dụ
“Bankruptcy (phá sản) proceedings can go on in an age of years. It's up to the states and cities that have sued Purdue to determine when it is ...

"I’ve known his family including parents for in an age of years. His parents are wonderful people and Ricky has the same qualities and values – down to earth (thực tế), genuine (chân thật), kind and sincere," Lazarus said.

Asked by a reporter about the China trade dispute that by some measures had already lasted 18 months, he said that “in the great historical continuum (thể liên tục), I don’t think 18 months for this thing is in an age of years.”

"Hen's teeth" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Luke Barkhuizen on Pexels

"Hen's teeth" = răng gà mái -> nghĩa là cái gì đó rất hiếm, ít thấy (gà không có răng).

Ví dụ
As Geelong stretched (duỗi) its lead against North Melbourne on Saturday night, Richo offered his expert analysis (phân tích) on the Kangaroos’ poor goalkicking — they finished the game with just one goal and eight behinds. “(Shaun) Higgins missed one he’d normally kick, (Jack) Ziebell’s missed that one, they’re like hen’s teeth here tonight, those shots, got to make the most (of them),” he said on Channel 7. He continued: “Why are hen’s teeth rare, by the way? I’ve got no idea.”

However, it seems, that’s only the case provided you use the health insurer’s (công ty bảo hiểm) “preferred (được ưu đãi) surgeons”. Ours isn’t, yet changing at this stage is not something we’re keen to do (thích làm). So our surgeon has booked us into the public system, for now, while we try to find out what it will cost to have him do the operation in a private hospital. Apparently, to do this you must have the item numbers for the procedure (quy trình). That’s like trying to pull hen’s teeth, we’ve found.

Safe to say, such unvarnished (thẳng thắn) consent (đồng thuận chung) screens are as rare as hen’s teeth on the modern Internet. But, in Europe, beefed up (tăng cường) privacy laws are now being used to challenge the ‘data industrial complex’s systemic abuses and help individuals enforce their rights against a behavior-tracking adtech industry that regulators  (lãnh đạo) have warned is out of control.

"Clean as a hound's tooth" nghĩa là gì?

Răng trắng khoe nụ cười xinh :) Photo by: Adam Muise on Unsplash

"Clean as a hound's tooth" = sạch như răng chó săn -> nghĩa là có uy tín và chân thành, không làm việc sai trái, nghĩa khác là sạch bong, không tì vết.

Ví dụ
Lady Blue is clean as a hound’s tooth. That’s the feminine nickname (cái tên nữ tính) for Fred Benenati’s striking Nassau blue 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. The two seat sports car is immaculate (trong trắng) in every respect (mọi phương diện). That shouldn’t be a surprise because its owner is of a profession where attention to detail and precision are a must and cosmetic perfection is a plus. Benenati is professor emeritus (giáo sư về hưu) in the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma. He’s owned the fine automobile for nearly two decades, but his admiration for the Corvette marque goes back even further.

“It was as clean as a hound’s tooth,” Toronto Daily Star sports writer Red Burnett said of the spectacular (ngoạn mục) shot. “McNeil never had a chance.” It would be Barilko’s last goal.

Case in point: the transit referendum (trưng cầu ý dân) that Swain opposed (phản đối). It was defeated by a 2 to 1 margin in last week’s election. Briley supported it. In addition, Barry’s disgrace (giáng chức) may have damaged Briley’s reputation while Swain’s is as clean as a hound’s tooth.

"A matter of course" nghĩa là gì?

Tai nạn nghề nghiệp Photo by Aleksandr Neplokhov from Pexels

'A matter of course' = một vấn đề dĩ nhiên -> một hành động hay kết quả như mong đợi hoặc một vấn đề hợp lô-gic.

Ví dụ
We have seen in recent years how various tax-and-spending measures (for example increased tax allowances (tiền chiết khấu thuế) for the self-employed) have been phased in. And that once the process starts it tends to be written in each year as a matter of course, even if final delivery takes time.

Friday night in Thun, BE., school house Allmendingen, conductor Martin Schranz (52) rehearses (nhắc lại) with his brass band. Also two teenagers to play with. Not a matter of course in times of trouble recruiting: “to observe This development in the Canton, tearing me almost to the heart,” says Schranz. He also taught as a music teacher, he also reported a Situation that will slowly and dramatically: “Any music teacher must consider how he wants to survive.”

But what is causing these drops in performance in Major finals? The answer appears to be that Williams wants to win too much. Although winning on the biggest stage was once a matter of course for Williams, she will head into next year’s Australian Open without having won a Grand Slam for two years and still one title short of Court’s record haul of 24 Majors. Both of those facts seem to be weighing her down when she steps on court in Grand Slam finals.
