"On the rocks" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Casey Horner on Unsplash

"On the rocks" = trên tảng đá -> nghĩa là rượu được phục vụ trong cốc với đá, nghĩa khác là trong trạng thái hỏng hóc, ọp ẹp, thiếu thốn.

Ví dụ
Two months after Chinese actress Angelababy and actor Huang Xiaoming refuted (bác bỏ) talk that their four-year marriage is on the rocks, rumours (tin đồn) are once again flaring up. Huang, 41, and Angelababy, 30, married in 2015 and have a two-year-old son, but have faced persistent (bền bỉ) scrutiny of their relationship due to the little interaction (tiếp xúc) between them on social media.

Margaritas are an essential (thiết yếu) cocktail everyone should know how to make by the time they're 30 — although arguably much sooner. Many people prefer to enjoy these cocktails frozen, but the classic drink is typically served on the rocks with a salted rim (phủ muối lên vành cốc).

“It is true our marriage is on the rocks, but it is not true that I have divorced (ly dị) her. I have not taken her back to Mombasa. It is also not true that she refused to stay with my mother and siblings. Stop spreading (lan tỏa) lies and work,” he said

"Cheap and nasty" có từ nasty nghĩa là tồi tệ. Cụm từ này được sử dụng để phàn nàn về một vật nào đó được tạo nên từ những chất liệu rẻ tiền và không đảm bảo chất lượng, dễ bị hư hỏng.

Ví dụ
“I really dislike the floor and wall tiles,” she says. “The white glossy wall tiles add no character and give it a public toilet vibe, while the faux marble floor tiles look cheap and nasty.”

It’s actually not the first time that Sega has given its branding over to a mini Mega Drive with pre-installed games, but these were of the cheap-and-nasty variety manufactured by AtGames that also used dodgy (không đáng tin cậy) emulation (bản sao chương trình).

Jon.E said: "I’ve stayed at numerous all inclusive hotels throughout Europe and the Caribbean and unfortunately this is the worst - [it] doesn’t even warrant a one star rating - I’m going to be blunt, the hotel was only 50 per cent full...this hotel is cheap and nasty, and should be avoided."

"Cheap Charlie" là cụm từ dùng để ám chỉ những người keo kiệt, bủn xỉn. Cụm từ này được sử dụng rộng rãi ở nhiều nước khu vực Đông Nam Á Và có thể đã xuất hiện ở Việt Nam trong thời kỳ chiến tranh để nói đến những tên lính Mỹ không bao giờ sẵn lòng vung tiền vào các quán bar, nhà hàng hoặc gái điếm.

Ví dụ
A crass gesture, perhaps, but one that gives the lie to a commonly held opinion on the island that the Russian tourists coming here these days are all cheap-Charlie, zero-dollar visitors.

I’ve been visiting Thailand since 1989 and I still visit regularly now. I’m definitely not a negative person or a cheap Charlie but I can see the writing on the wall and unfortunately it is not going to get any better as far as I can tell.

Lodge, who was attacked by a female bartender and hit with her shoe, said that he lives in Hua Hin and has been unfairly made fun of (bị cười nhạo, chế nhạo) in the English press and on the ThaiVisa forums following the incident. He noted that well-known newspapers The Mirror and The Sun called him a “Cheap Charlie” for his supposed complaining about beer prices.

"Big man on campus" nghĩa là gì?

"Big man on campus" = Nam sinh có tầm cỡ trong sân trường -> Chỉ nam sinh có sức ảnh hưởng/nổi tiếng trong trường, thường là ở các trường Đại học.

Ví dụ
Tonga is now the big man on campus, literally and figuratively (nghĩa đen và nghĩa bóng). He’s not quite as recognizable as star quarterback Zach Wilson, but he’s getting there.

That leaves Tyler Boyd as the big man on campus and a prime opportunity for the 49ers defense to eliminate (loại trừ) him from the game flow and make the complimentary (khen ngợi, khen tặng) guys like John Ross or the tight ends put up the numbers.

Dusty Baker is one of the greatest prep athletes (vận động viên dự bị) Sacramento has produced. He lived the post-World War II narrative of Sacramento where the old town was infused (truyền, ngấm) with African American residents who often integrated (hợp nhất) their neighborhoods. The Bakers did that in Carmichael. Baker was one of the few African Americans at Del Campo High School in his day, yet attained (đạt được, giành được) big man on campus status via star turns in multiple sports.

"Be man enough" = Đủ dũng cảm/can đảm để làm điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
"I think he should come out and be man enough to say, 'There is real consequences (hậu quả) to holding views and taking actions like this and I, Justin Trudeau, will resign,'" he said.

“Now, quite frankly (thẳng thắn), if he is not going to be man enough to stand up and accept the club are still paying his wages, and they will be for at least the next 12 months, then I think keeping him on the bench (ghế khán đài), or not even picking him for the bench, is the right move.

“He wants you to do well, which then ultimately makes the team and him do well. “It’s massive in football that you do get across how you feel and what you want. Once you are in this game you have to be man enough to know it’s not personal. “It’s something to do with the game and to be successful you have to have that.”

"Be a man of his word" = Người đàn ông luôn giữ lời hứa/làm đúng như lời mình đã hứa.

Ví dụ
And Alvarez proved to be a man of his word in the Outback Bowl. He had Joel Stave hand off to Gordon 34 times to cram 251 yards down the throats (cổ họng) of those big talkers from the SEC West in a 34-31 Badgers victory.

Nicole saw right through Michie's lies when he threw Tommy under the bus. She had her chance at that moment to take out Holly and neuter the showmance, but she deferred to Cliff, who foolishly believed Michie would be a man of his word and honor their Final 4 ... even after Michie had just laid into them and lied about Tommy.

And unless Brooke is hallucinating (gợi ảo giác) — which we’re pretty sure she’s not — that hooded psychopath (người bệnh tâm thần) has already claimed the lives of the gas station attendant (he tried to warn them!) and the hot, ear-less hitch hiker. To make matters even worse, the final shot of the episode welcomed back Brooke’s “Night Stalker,” who unfortunately appears to be a man of his word.

"A man about town" = Người đàn ông sắp xuống thị trấn -> Người đàn ông giao thiệp rộng và ăn mặc rất thời trang, họ thường đi tới các sự kiện thời trang, clubs hoặc nhà hát.

Ví dụ
Graphic artist Shelley Howard is a native Chicagoan. A man about town who explores big city pleasures. But his identification extends beyond Chicago.

Joseph Losey’s “Mr. Klein” (1976), showing in a select run at Film Forum beginning September 6, imagines a French Catholic named Robert Klein, a man-about-town who spends his days bilking Paris’ Jews for priceless pieces of art (kiệt tác nghệ thuật vô giá).

The sun was rising in the sky, t’would make a glorious day. Back in the castle, the wife was now ready for some tasty morsels (miếng) of food and drink to sustain her for the day ahead. As she ate, her husband’s absence (sự vắng mặt) caused her no concern — Robert de Barri was a ‘man about town’ of his time. It was not unusual for him to visit parts of their vast estate and call on others of his ‘upper class’ (tầng lớp thượng lưu).

"A wise man of Gotham" = Người khôn ở xứ ngốc -> Người vô cùng ngốc nghếch.

Ví dụ
People in Gotham are accustomed to (quen với) hearing Batman jokes, but many aren't aware of ... Villagers were also dubbed the Wise Men of Gotham.

Determined to do anything they could to prevent King John from ever setting foot in the place, the so-called “Wise Men of Gotham” hatched an ingenious (khéo léo, mưu trí) plan.

“They’re either liars or they’re a wise man of Gotham ," Nugent said. "But, in the world of political correctness, some guy in a lab coat made a decision. He’s never even eaten a deer; he’s never been in a deer woods and if he has, he’s either lying or hopelessly ignorant (hờ hững, lờ đi). "A man's man" = Người đàn ông tham gia vào những hoạt động cho nam giới/tính cách dễ dàng/phù hợp với người đồng giới hơn so với khác giới.

Ví dụ
He's a man's man but definitely a woman's kind of guy! Oh, and did I mention he's talented? He's a great singer, songwriter, and entertainer.

The comedy shorts award went to Neil’s Yard, from Samantha Lyden and Theresa Burns, about a ‘man’s man’ builder who offers a lesson in feminism (thuyết nam nữ bình quyền) to the other lads on the site.

If there’s anything to remember Torrey Smith for, it should be for his work in the communities of wherever he was. Since coming to Maryland in college for the hometown Terrapins, Smith was dedicated to being a man’s man and striving for greatness as an individual. Nothing was more important in his life than his family and God. You can’t hate a man with the compassion and understanding that he was born with.

"Boldly go where no man has gone before" = Liều lĩnh đi tới nơi mà trước đây chưa ai từng đi qua -> Khám phá một vùng đất mới/lãnh thổ chưa được thám hiểm hoặc làm điều gì mà chưa ai từng làm từ trước tới giờ.

Ví dụ
India fancies itself a spacefaring nation now. Yes, it’s great ‘to boldly go where no man has gone before’. It’ll feel even better, paying GST before blast-off (sự phóng tàu vũ trụ lên trên không trung).

It began by posing a simple question: “What are the principle reasons for undertaking a national space program?” The report then answered that question, laying out four factors, starting with the “compelling” urge (sự thôi thúc đầy thuyết phục, hấp dẫn) of human beings to explore the unknown -- to “go where no one has gone before.”

This was another great addition by galaxy (thiên hà) brained Dayton Moore that NO ONE saw coming. The 20 year old switch hitting shortstop from the London Kings (and most definitely not from Star Trek) has enjoyed massive power numbers from each side of the plate, but specifically the right side, where he has hit 20 every year. All this while playing all infield (gần khung thành) positions. It makes you wonder why every team wasn’t in on him this whole time. I’m guessing it has to do with Moore’s willingness (ý chí) to boldly go where no man has gone before.

"A man of my kidney" nghĩa là gì?

"A man of my kidney" = Người đàn ông có tính khí/quả thận của tôi -> Người có tính khí giống/tương tự tôi.

Ví dụ
The only mention of kidneys in Shakespeare is in The Merry Wives Of Windsor when Falstaff refers to someone as “a man of my kidney”.

As noted, our ancestors (tổ tiên) must have known very little about kidneys. Nowhere do we find a link from kidney to urine (nước tiểu). Yet in the 16th century, about two hundred years after the emergence of kidney as an anatomical (khoa giải phẫu) term, it acquired the sense “nature, temperament” (tính khí); hence the idiom a man of my kidney.

The closest the kidneys get is to be used as a synonym (đồng nghĩa) for disposition (tính tình) or temperament. As Falstaff puts it in “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” “a man of my kidney.” Or as T.S. Eliot’s speaker laments (than khóc) the loss of their youth in “A Cooking Egg,” saying they will meet “heroes of that kidney” in the afterlife, describing poet and scholar Sir Philip Sidney and Roman general Coriolanus.

"Run a tight ship" nghĩa là gì?

'Run a tight ship' = vận hành một con tàu chặt chẽ -> điều hành công việc, một nơi nào đó hay một nhóm theo cách chặt chẽ, có kỉ luật và hiệu quả.

Ví dụ
The full report is available from the CCC and contains a lot of handy tips on how to run a tight ship where things like this don’t go unnoticed for years.

Be personable and approachable - A great teacher will really want to help students be their best. They will foster a desire to learn rather than run a tight ship.

While Google has been trying its darnedest (nỗ lực hết sức) to run a tight ship on its Play Store, nasty apps created by bad actors still manage to find their way onto the Android storefront. The latest of these threats has been named ‘the Joker’ – after the iconic and manic Batman villain – and has been found on a total of 24 Android apps that, until recently, could be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Jacksonville wants to run a tight ship with an old-school Tom Coughlin as team president (chủ tịch, đội trưởng). Yet, it is somehow letting players run all over the head coach on the sideline. This isn’t something that will necessarily breed success for the Jaguars moving forward this season. It really is crazy how things have fallen apart at the seams for a team that’s two seasons removed from an AFC Championship Game appearance.

Ví dụ
Perhaps your life experience thus far indicates (chỉ ra) you are one of those people who can drink coffee at all hours and still sleep like a rock. If so, congratulations, and don’t change a thing, you’re perfect. “If you don't have trouble falling asleep and you feel well rested during the day, then [drinking coffee late in the day] is fine,” Dr. Sampat says.

You are now in a righter state of mind for us to tell you about Miraval Austin, a new wellness wonderland in Texas Hill Country where you'll paint your feelings, throw a few hatchets, get a hot stone massage, drink some wine, sleep like a rock at night and interpret (giải thích) your dreams in the morning. "Float on air" nghĩa là gì?

'Float on air' = lơ lửng trong không khí -> cảm giác tự do và phấn khích, phởn phơ.

Ví dụ
Clue 3: Where sounds and laughter (tiếng cười) float on air, lovely notes beyond compare. So close nearby, but hidden where? A place to settle and to share.

Books in stacks are a persistent motif in scenic designer Brett J. Banakis' array of impressively expedient sets. They flank an antique chest, the show's MacGuffin, that seems to float on air as the lights come up. The phone rings and an abrupt message states, "Not available" in a terse (cộc lốc) American accent.

Mr. Lahiri, who often wore aviator sunglasses (kính râm Aviator) and frizzy wigs, worked as a magician (ảo thuật gia) for years. In one video on social media, he appears to float on air while suspended from the side of a truck. In another, he walks on a busy street with the illusion that his head has been cut off.

Life is not a barrel of laughs; rather it is a very complex journey with full of ups and downs. Sometimes it feels like blessing and sometimes it feels like curse (lời chửi thề). Accomplishments and challenges are part of life. When you achieve something, you float on air, and when life throws you a curve ball, you end up self-loathing and disgust.

'Float a trial balloon' = thả một quả bóng kiểm thử, trước kia người ta dùng bóng bay để tìm hiểu tình trạng thời tiết -> đề nghị, gợi ý một kế hoạch, ý tưởng để kiểm tra phản ứng của mọi người và nhận phản hồi.

Ví dụ
Trump’s move to float a trial balloon to Denmark to try to buy Greenland, a strategic and geopolitically important territory, is not all that unusual historically:

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is starting to float a trial-balloon explanation for its apparent slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The Daily Beast has learned, in hopes of escaping the consequences of an episode that has shaken whatever geopolitical confidence existed in Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

David Brigode, senior project manager for Sonoma County’s Habitat for Humanity in Santa Rosa, told the Index-Tribune this week that, while no formal proposal (đề xuất) has been submitted, he wanted to float a trial balloon about the project to gauge (phán đoán) community reaction and get in front of any inaccurate information that may circulate (lưu hành, truyền bá) in the community.

"Float an idea" nghĩa là gì?

Một vote cho sự sáng tạo Photo by malcolm garret from Pexels

'Float an idea' = (làm) một ý tưởng nổi lên -> gợi ý điều gì đó để phán đoán sự quan tâm hoặc nhận thức của mọi người với nó, giống một kiểu 'mớm lời' ấy nhỉ các bạn.

Ví dụ
Many of these corporations do give equally to both Democrats and Republicans, and as such, you’d expect them to give money to a few Republicans. But they can avoid giving money to the most bigoted (tin mù quáng) and anti-gay voices in the Republican party. And if they do, let’s float an idea — maybe those companies shouldn’t get a Pride float.

Public companies in the United States face unique demands. Under rules developed by the federal Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), any of such a company’s shareholders (cổ đông) can float an idea for all shareholders to consider by placing a “proposal” on the corporate proxy statement, a government-mandated document that makes required disclosures and lays out items to be considered at the company’s annual meeting (đại hội thường niên).

I always thought speed was a modern, universal truth until I read about the Open Decision Framework, which Jim Whitehurst described in The Open Organization. With this approach, you want to float an idea early with stakeholders but delay the decision process as long as possible. By giving everyone the opportunity to get a say in a major decision, team members not only feel that they’ve been heard, but they also have a greater sense of ownership of the success of the solution, and you end up with an overall better solution than top-down decision making.

"Just off the boat" nghĩa là gì?

Hôm nay tôi cô đơn quá, giữa thành phố xa lạ Photo by picjumbo.com from Pexels

'Just off the boat' = vừa ra khỏi thuyền -> người mới đến một nơi nào đó (có thể dễ bị lừa, vẫn còn ngây thơ).

Ví dụ
Since Wajima is a fishing port, seafood can be found at virtually every stall. You can buy fresh fish just off the boat and have it made into mouthwatering (chảy nước miếng, thèm rỏ rãi) sashimi, or get a steamed abalone sliced up to go for later enjoyment.

But Omar is not "just off the boat." She came to the United States in the 1990s, according to her official House website. "Before running for office, she worked as a community educator at the University of Minnesota, was a Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and served as a Senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council." She is also a former state representative (người đại diện).

It was the start of a life-long obsession. Mr Nadim, 40, has now completed 7,000 dives (lặn) and runs his own centre in Fujairah. From his base at the marine club overlooking the Gulf of Oman, Mr Nadim organises dives, teaches and mixes breathing gases. When I meet him there, he is just off the boat. Tanks are slotted neatly into holders, dive suits hang from the walls while students are arriving for the next class.

'On a slow boat to China' = trên chuyến tàu chậm tới Trung Quốc -> (trải qua một chặng đường hoặc hành trình dài) mất rất nhiều thời gian đặc biệt đi tới kết luận hoặc điểm đến không chắc chắn, rõ ràng.

Ví dụ
Graziano Pelle put on a slow boat to China after refusing to shake coach’s hand. Italy coach Gianpiero Ventura has sent home striker Graziano Pelle after the Shandong Luneng forward refused to shake his hand when he was substituted during Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Spain.

So, what did these engineers do with the old hardware once they finished testing? Did they just toss them in the trash? Did they send them on a slow boat to China to sit at an e-waste facility? Nope, they've been stored in boxes "in someone else's office" over the years, separated by the year they were released (and/or tested).

In 1997, Sir Tom Stoppard was the first playwright (nhà soạn kịch) to be knighted (được phong tước) for his services to the arts since Terence Rattigan. Some of his work is ingenius but this is not his best work - or the best version of it. Rough Crossing, now showing at Cambridge Arts Theatre, was written in 1984. From this production, if it was good then. Its stale (cũ) now. It's set on a ship and watching this flat production feels like you have got on a slow boat to China.

Too late for a clean block, the older Antetokounmpo brother went for a cheap shot instead — a shove (cú đẩy) from behind that sent Barnes into the photographers and people seated along the sideline.

As the interview went on, Cuomo appeared frustrated with Castro’s lack of contrition (sự hối lỗi, sự hối hận). “I hear you. This show's all about robust debate and it's also about decency. That seemed like a cheap shot.”

'Blow one's top' từ này xuất hiện trong ngành hàng hải, khi tàu thổi không khí lên ống khói để đẩy sạch bụi bặm bám ở bên trong thường gây ra tiếng động rất lớn làm người nghe giật mình, sợ hãi -> trở nên cáu, tức giận và quát tháo người khác.

Ví dụ
You’re ready to blow your top – but how much is due to your internal (bên trong) hunger and how much to external (bên ngoài) annoyances?

"I'm so used to it so I don't have a reaction anymore," he told reporters after the game. "Sometimes you blow your top, sometimes you think you need to send a message to the referees (trọng tài)."

Anger issues: Is a parasite (vật kí sinh) from your cat causing you to blow your top? A PARASITE carried by your cat may have burrowed into your brain and be triggering furious bouts of temper, it was claimed today.

In Anger: Taming the Beast, therapist (nhà trị liệu) Reneau Peurifoy proposes a three part test to decide whether your anger is constructive or damaging. Next time you blow your top ask yourself these questions: Did a real threat exist? Was the level of your anger proportionate to the threat? Did your actions effectively reduce (làm giảm) the threat with the least amount of harm to yourself and others? These are the warning signs that your anger is an issue.

'Blow to smithereens' có từ 'smithereens' là mảnh nhỏ, mảnh vụn -> đập thứ gì thành nhiều mảnh nhỏ; đập tan một ý tưởng hay kế hoạch bằng cách vạch ra những lỗi sai của nó.

Ví dụ
Rage 2 may be full of baddies (nhân vật phản diện) to shoot and things to blow to smithereens, but Avalanche has storytelling ambitions too.

The world isn't going to blow to smithereens in 11 years. (This viral conclusion from a recent climate change report is just factually wrong.) But the UN’s committee of climate scientists, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said in October that we will need to fundamentally and restructure our governments and global economic system if we want to avoid an absolute worst-case warming scenario.

She wrote, “The other side of the story — and I came to learn that every story has another side — was not driven home to me until my parents moved to Japan in the summer of 1970, when I was 10. I could not help being acutely aware (nhận thức sâu sắc) that I was living in a country my grandfather had once tried to blow to smithereens. By then, I had already gleaned (lượn lặt thông tin) enough during tense family dinners to have more than a few inklings of doubt about what happened to Japan during the vengeful (trả thù, báo thù) summer of 1945. Children sense anything that is amiss.”

“As a result of the boundary settlement made in 1920 Londonderry was faced with a boundary wall and at one blow all her valuable long-standing extensive contacts with East Donegal and the peninsula were cut off. To this day Londonderry has never fully recovered from that blow. I cannot believe that any scheme or proposal to isolate Londonderry and strike another blow at her prosperity would be accepted by this House,” he added.

For thereby they were given full citizen rights and equality for a people which was much more clearly and definitely a race apart than all others, that has always formed and will form a State within the State. . . . Ví dụ

The German newspaper claims the release clause (điều khoản) on Brandt’s contract will drop to around £21m this summer; something of a steal for a player who would probably be quite cheap at twice the price.

The $68 million is a fig leaf. It’s 0.03% of the three fossil fuel companies’ combined annual revenue (thu nhập). It’s change they found in the couch. It gives them a nice slurry of green paint to pour over their tarnished images and is cheap at twice the price.
