"Be at cross purposes" nghĩa là gì?

Bình tĩnh, đừng manh động chớ người anh em! Photo by mark6mauno.

"Be at cross purposes" = tại những mục đích khác nhau/trái ngược nhau -> cụm từ này nghĩa là xung đột, chống lại, chống đối với ai hoặc điều gì.

Ví dụ
Not only does this contradict another assertion by him in the same media interaction — that he was “fully convinced that a majority of the Kashmiris totally support” the legal abatement of Article 370 — it also seemed to be at cross purposes with the government’s other efforts to present India as the sole arbiter of Kashmir’s destiny.

Consolidation and integration need not be at cross purposes. They are different axes that can both be pursued simultaneously. We can consolidate domain focus, expertise, funding, and acquisition to train, equip and present forces at the same time that we develop combined arms doctrine, concepts of operation, and collaborative command and control.

A park that’s essentially the size of a tennis court shouldn’t cost so much. Why does it have to be so elaborate? In addition to the aforementioned (đã nói ở trên) walkway, it will have trees, landscaping and low walls upon which people can sit. Much of the ground — too much for our taste — will be covered surface, not grass, which seems to be at cross-purposes with the notion of a park as “green space.”

Đường đời còn lắm chông gai. Photo by: Gratisography on Unsplash

"Bump in the road" = cú va chạm mạnh -> nghĩa là khó khăn phát sinh làm cản trở quá trình tiến tới/đi tiếp/phát triển/tiến độ (công việc).

Ví dụ
Clarets boss Sean Dyche hopes Danny Drinkwater’s brush with trouble will prove to be nothing more than a bump in the road on his way back to his best form (hình dạng). Drinkwater, 29, is currently nursing an ankle (mắt cá chân) injury after a reported ‘attack’ outside the Chinawhite club in Manchester a fortnight ago.

Setting aside a bump in the road with a tough (khó khăn) start against the Phillies on Sept. 7, Stroman has gotten better and better each time he's taken the mound since the Mets acquired him prior to the trade (trao đổi) deadline.

Canada-headquartered Fiera Capital is targeting growth in the UK when it comes to private assets as the chief executive called Brexit an ‘unfortunate (không may mắn) bump in the road’.

"That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger" nghĩa là gì?

Đẩy tạ nâng cơ, muốn khỏe đẹp phải kiên nhẫn Photo by Li Sun from Pexels

'That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger' = những gì không giết chết/đánh gục bạn sẽ làm bạn mạnh mẽ hơn -> bạn có thể trưởng thành hơn kể cả từ những trải nghiệm tồi tệ nhất.

Ví dụ
Despite the divorce (li hôn) going through in seconds, Laurence said the financial hit was “horrendous” after spending a lot of money to reach an agreement. Referring to the situation a "drastic life change," he said to The Times: “Goodbye, money! “Goodbye, wife! Argh! But that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger, doesn't it?

As their most recent film, "Avengers: Endgame," just crossed the box office threshold to displace "Avatar" as the top-grossing film of all time, the brothers admit the capstone of 11 years of Marvel storytelling was a Herculean effort that, if gone awry (hỏng, thất bại), could have broken them. But as Anthony reminded, "That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?"

I’ve been making the joke (lời nói đùa) for a while that On A Wire is our Paul’s Boutique where it’s like … didn’t do well when it came out, but now, “Oh, it’s my favorite record!” That’s not what you said in 2002! Actually, my takeaway from that record is that I don’t think it’s a home run from start to finish, but the songs from that record that are good are some of the best we’ve ever written. Ultimately, it’s part of what brings us to this point, that reception (tiếp nhận, tiếp thu) or lack thereof to the record. That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

"No man's land" nghĩa là gì?

"No man's land" = Vùng đất không người -> Vùng không bị chiếm đóng, tách biệt khỏi tầm nhắm của các bè phái gây chiến tranh/đất không chủ, đất cằn cỗi/tình huống mơ hồ do sự không chắc chắn về cách tiến hành.

Ví dụ
“Some recent trade optimism (tính lạc quan) and split views on what the ECB will do has kept gold stuck in no-man’s land,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst (nhà phân tích thị trường cấp cao) at Oanda.

Hamilton was soon in no-man's land, and when he did eventually stop, six laps (vòng đua) later than Leclerc and seven laps later than Vettel, the Briton re-joined the race behind both Ferrari cars and Verstappen, too.

India has told the UN Security Council that peacekeeping currently is in a "no-man's land" and called for the next generation of reforms (sự cải cách) in peacekeeping based on incentivisation (sự thúc đẩy hóa), innovation (sự cải tiến) and institutionalisation (sự thể chế hóa).

"Your strong suit" nghĩa là gì?

Làn da sô-cô-la quyến rũ Photo by Helzio Pires Cupertino from Pexels

'One's strong suit' = một bộ bài hoa (một trong bốn quân cơ, rô, bích, tép), dãy cùng hoa -> sở trường của ai, món tủ.

Ví dụ
If walking in heels (giày cao gót) isn't your strong suit, you may want to opt for these block-heeled suede (da lộn) shoes. The thick heel is becoming more popular by the day, and the stunning tan color is exceptionally versatile.

Once in, the method for voting is simple. The staff at the polling station will hand you an empty envelope. Inside the booth, you’ll find stacks of slips with each party’s letter-based symbol and name in Hebrew. If Hebrew is not your strong suit, familiarize yourself with your party’s symbol beforehand (lúc trước), or write it down and bring the note with you into the booth.

The question should be: How do you create a smooth system within your business? Identify the gap that you no longer want to fill yourself and then delegate (đại biểu) what isn’t your strong suit. You don’t need top talent. You need to find someone teachable who has different skills than yours and can learn quickly. The goal is a highly trainable team with complementary (bổ sung) strengths.

"Mean enough to steal a penny off a dead man's eyes" nghĩa là gì?

"Mean enough to steal a penny off a dead man's eyes" = Đủ bần cùng/bần tiện để trộm đồng xu của người đã nhắm mắt/đã chết -> Vô cùng nghèo khó, rẻ mạt, bủn xỉn và đê hèn.

Ví dụ
Dundee’s defence was mean enough to steal a penny off a dead man's eyes at the start of the season and Forster is determined to rediscover that habit, starting at Morton.

Your iPhone is designed to last five years at the very least because that’s when Apple stops you from using the latest version of its iOS operating system after this length of time – which might sound mean enough to steal a penny off a dead man's eyes but is actually a rather generous support period.

Next, head to iCloud Backup, tap Back Up Now, and enter your password. If you don’t use your device much, it’ll start backing up. (Be on Wi-Fi, unless you hate yourself.) If you’ve loads of apps that store a ton of data locally, you’ll have to buy more iCloud space, because Tim Cook needs a new yacht (du thuyền) and only gives you a mean enough to steal a penny off a dead man's eyes 5GB for free.

"Have a strong stomach" nghĩa là gì?

Cậu có ăn được mấy món như vầy không? Photo by Kaboompics .com from Pexels

'Have a strong stomach' = có một cái dạ dày khỏe -> có thể ăn được nhiều thứ (thường là những thứ lạ) mà không bị ảnh hưởng tới dạ dày, không thấy buồn nôn; có khả năng trải qua hoặc chứng kiến thứ gì đó khó chịu mà không cảm thấy buồn nôn.

Ví dụ
"Diamond, you gotta get here, right away," Neff began excitedly. "I've been robbed!" Diamond said he would be right over. "Thanks, Diamond — I hope you have a strong stomach."

So if you enjoy the intrigue (thích thú) of court politics, want to see a daring, modern take on the ascendancy (uy thế) of one of history’s most powerful women—and you have a strong stomach—you won’t want to miss this one.

This is not for anyone who is easily afraid. In order to get through this adventure (cuộc phiêu lưu) you need to have a strong stomach and little to no fear. If that sounds like you, then this is the perfect fall activity for you to dive (đắm chìm) into.

If you are going to try and scalp down-and-out retail shares these days, keep the position sizes small and realize that the markets are not acting rationally, at least in that sector. If you don't have a strong stomach and the ability to see shares cut in half or worse, stay away. Longer term, the sector is toast, but in the short term, inefficiencies abound.

"Man's inhumanity to man" nghĩa là gì?

"Man's inhumanity to man" = Chỉ sự độc ác/sự nhẫn tâm của con người với nhau.

Ví dụ
“We explore the darkness that can be man's inhumanity to man (and beast) (thú vật),” Hornus said. “Yet we also embrace the goodness of others.

Roadblocks (hàng rào chắn), hurdles (rào; (nghĩa bóng) khó khăn cần phải vượt qua; chướng ngại vật), dead end streets — “man’s inhumanity to man” — have been purposely placed in the paths of African Americans, men and women alike, since the days of Jamestown in order to deny them the rights and opportunities afforded whites in the U.S.

What makes those conflicts (xung đột) so interesting is that they depend on the divine (thần thánh). Everyone wrestles (bóp méo, xuyên tạc) with his or her place in the universe, and if you’re a person who believes in God, you wrestle with man’s inhumanity to man and the silence you may hear when you try to speak with your creator (đấng tạo hóa).

"All talk (and no action)" nghĩa là gì?

Lên kế hoạch cho lắm rồi không biết có thực hiện không đây! Photo by You X Ventures on Unsplash

"All talk (and no action)" = toàn lời nói và không có hành động -> cụm từ này nghĩa là chỉ có nói suông mà không thực hiện, hay có thể gọi vui là NATO (not action talk only).

Ví dụ
Former Councilwoman Sue Lovell said the city isn’t doing enough to address a “new normal” of stronger storms. Challenger Bill King characterized the city’s response as all talk and no action.

“Since 2005 until now Abbas made many promises that he never delivered on. With all of his threats to stop all agreements with Israel, to (threaten to) stop security coordination, it’s all talk and no action. He doesn’t have a clear strategy when it comes to dealing with Israel.”

After a typically hyperactive summer season, Downton Abbey will prove to be just the soothing nightcap sought by many moviegoers eager for something that’s all talk and no action. (In the world of this movie, an action scene is when someone hits a hot-water pipe with a shovel.) It’s a gentle picture about genteel (thượng lưu, trưởng giả) people, as witty and warm as one might hope.

"A gong show" nghĩa là gì?

Bộ cánh "thời thượng"? Photo courtesy Jason_Cobb

"A gong show" là một sự kiện lố bịch, hỗn loạn, thảm họa.

His last day of work is Friday. “Too much to do . . . It’s a gong show here,” he said recently at his downtown office.

I start with a sigh of relief (thở nhẹ nhõm) that the circus did NOT come to town this weekend. Because it would have been a gong show with the clown named Antonio Brown.

As voters, we need to take the time to listen to debates (tranh luận), read and listen to the news. This election has turned into a gong show. Mud slinging (lăng mạ) and accusations (những lời buộc tội).

"The project has been on again, off again," said Bourassa. For a while, it stalled (ngăn cấm) — materials degraded (cơ sở xuống cấp) and had to be replaced, and paint froze. "It was just a bit of a gong show," she said.

"Man of leisure" = Người đàn ông nhàn rỗi -> Người đàn ông có đủ nhiều tiền nên không cần đi làm để kiếm sống và họ dành thời gian để làm bất cứ việc gì mà họ thích thôi.

Ví dụ
Now I'm just a man of leisure, but I do use public transport (phương tiện công cộng) a lot. I'd rather catch a train or a tram to go into the city than to drive.

McGregor used his time as a man of leisure by continuing his rivalry (kình địch, đối thủ) with the Russian, as well as his rivalry with Paulie Malignaggi, with constant jibes (hòa hợp, đi đôi với nhau) on Twitter.

June 21, 1922. Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, born in St. Petersburg in 1889, a man of leisure living in the Hotel Metropol in Moscow, is deemed (cho rằng, tưởng rằng) a subversive (người tìm cách lật đổ) by the Emergency Committee of the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs.

"Give the show away" nghĩa là gì?

"Give the (whole) show away" = phá show -> tiết lộ bí mật (để lộ kế hoạch...) hoặc cho thấy sự bất cập.

Ví dụ
After the painful telephone conversation with Nicholas she had been perilously near to breakingdown (sụp đổ) and giving the whole show away. She had felt weak and unsuited (không phù hợp) to play the part of a heroine (nữ anh hùng).

You see I'd been away from home for a day or two before I came here, and when I did this quick- change business it struck me (nhận ra) that if I had letters forwarded it would give the whole show away, so I wired (cố gắng) to stop them.

He himself, a professional undercover agent (đặc vụ bí mật) , not a gifted amateur (thiên tài nghiệp dư) like Janice, was liable to err (phạm lỗi) on the side of caution (thận trọng), never trying anything which, if it failed, was liable to give the whole show away.

"Man the fort" nghĩa là gì?

"Man the fort" = Người canh giữ pháo đài -> Chịu trách nhiệm giám sát/trông giữ nơi nào/một vị trí mà không ai canh chừng hoặc khi ai vắng nhà.

Ví dụ
And I'm not successful enough to have a bunch of assistants to man the fort for me so I can peace-out. IT WAS MY GOAL [to be a veterinarian (bác sĩ thú y)].

Full disclosure (vạch trần, phơi bày): When Williams’s name was floated as being connected to the Patriots back during the summer, I endorsed (xác nhận) . . . passing on a deal for the pass protector. The Patriots needed to see whether Wynn, a 2018 first-rounder, could man the fort and stay on the field.

Another Ovitz friendship imploded (cụm lại) with equal notoriety (trạng thái rõ ràng): the one with CAA co-founder Ron Meyer. When their relationship dissolved, Meyer exited CAA for Universal, leaving Ovitz to man the fort alone. But don’t fret (phiền muộn) too much: Mike staged a breathtaking revenge (sự trả thù), snatching up a beach property Meyer had badly wanted before his ex-pal (người bạn cũ) could close the deal.

"Man plans and God laughs" nghĩa là gì?

"Man plans and God laughs" = Mưu sự tại nhân, thành sự tại thiên -> Chỉ trích/bình phẩm chiều hướng con người lập những kế hoạch vì không có sự đảm bảo rằng các kế hoạch đó sẽ có kết quả hoặc thực hiện được.

Ví dụ
It’s been said that “man plans and God laughs.” It’s a truism (chân lý hiển nhiên) that was confirmed in Sooke resident Shawn Driver’s mid-August foray (sự đánh phá) to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah where his dream of pushing his 1953 Studebaker to 300 mph was stymied (ngăn trở) by bad weather.

Why, then, is it so hard for some people to find a marriage partner and build a family? Marriage, sex and children are the among the most natural of human desires, and being unable to achieve them is excruciatingly painful (vô cùng đau đớn). I guess that’s why they say, “Man plans and God laughs.”

It’s a harsh (khắc nghiệt) fact of life that people get divorced, fall out or pass away. But it’s a happy fact of life that people reconcile (cam chịu, giải hòa), have their own families or re-build their lives. The old Yiddish proverb says ‘man plans and God laughs’, but letting your will become irrelevant (không liên quan) is no laughing matter. So as your life changes, it’s well worth thinking about changing your will to reflect (phản ánh) your circumstances.

Ví dụ
Cool, man. I don't want to take up too much of your time. It was nice to talk to you, and like I said, I would love to meet you sometime. I'm a big fan.

Thanks for reading all year, it's been good to talk to you all back at home and the support from home this year has been pretty incredible really, so hopefully we can have a better year next year and keep moving forwards.

"Man on the make" nghĩa là gì?

"Man on the make" = Người đàn ông đang có nhu cầu -> Người đàn ông đang kiếm bạn tình/đang theo đuổi một lợi ích cá nhân.

Ví dụ
They added: "He’s a man on the make and a shameless social climber (kẻ thích làm quen với những người giàu sang), but he lacks the brains and drive of his father. "He’s ambitious (tham vọng) and arrogant (kiêu ngạo), pompous (khoa trương) and slippery (láu cá, không đáng tin).”

Jack Lemmon is a young man on the make who lets his company’s executives use his apartment for extra-marital affairs (những vụ ngoại tình). After an office Christmas party, he finds his boss’s mistress (tình nhân), a young woman played by Shirley MacLaine, whom he knows from the office, at his apartment, where she’s tried to overdose (sử dụng quá liều) on pills. They strike up a complicated relationship with multiple entanglements (rối rắm, vướng mắc), both professional and personal. It’s a remarkable movie (and a Best Picture winner) that ends on New Year’s Eve.

For better or worse, that encapsulated (tóm lược) my view of late-model post-prison David Crosby: he was a man on the make, driven by his circumstances (which had surely left him in the sort of desperate yet oddly affluent (xa hoa, giàu có) lifestyle that seems to befall the formerly rich and celebrated in this country) to leverage (đầu cơ vay nợ) what was left of his star power to pay his bills. He was a tragic (bi kịch) figure, proudly undone as much by hubris (ngạo mạn, xấc xược) as his legendary appetite (lòng tham muốn, sự thèm ăn) for illicit (trái phép, bị cấm, lậu) substances.

"Man of the moment" = Người đàn ông của thời khắc -> Người đàn ông được tôn kính, chúc mừng và ngưỡng mộ vì giành chiến thắng lớn/nhân vật chính của một bữa tiệc hoặc buổi liên hoan.

Ví dụ
Man of the moment Maddison arrived at the King Power ahead of the match sporting an outlandish (kỳ dị, lạ lùng; người nước ngoài, xa xôi) Louis Vuitton rucksack (cái ba lô) - with a price tag (nhãn giá) to match.

It is Ranveer Singh who bagged (lấy được, bỏ vào túi) the Best Actor trophy (cúp) at the recently held IIFA 2019 for his performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat. But for the 34-year-old actor, it is Ayushmann Khurrana who is the man of the moment.

But with 78 minutes on the clock, Cain once again was the man of the moment as he finished his drive through the middle of the park with a perfectly weighted ball which found an awaiting (đang đợi) James Norris, who emphatically (mạnh mẽ, dứt khoát) dispatched (đá nhanh gọn) the ball into the net to double Liverpool’s lead.

"Cheaper by the dozen" = rẻ hơn với mười hai -> cụm từ này có thể được hiểu theo hai nghĩa là: rẻ hơn khi mua số lượng lớn; ít tốn sức và đạt hiệu quả cao hơn nếu nhiều người cùng giải quyết một vấn đề nào đó.

Ví dụ
It really is cheaper by the dozen thanks to a sweet deal courtesy of Krispy Kreme. Customers who buy a dozen of any doughnuts can get a dozen chocolate glazed doughnuts for only $2.

Now we know that home-run records are getting cheaper by the dozen — which is one fewer than the number of blasts the Diamondbacks and Phillies combined to hit in one game in June, a new mark.

The collection also features an extremely rare bottle number 1 of 1957 Bowmore 54 year old “Crashing Waves”. What makes this particular bottle so valuable? Only 12 were ever released. Cheaper by the dozen certainly doesn’t apply here, as this particular whisky is estimated to be worth between $100,000 and $130,000.

"Why buy a cow when you can get milk for free" = tại sao phải mua bò trong khi bạn có thể nhận sữa miễn phí? hoặc "Why buy a cow when milk is so cheap?"

Why Buy a Cow When Milk is so Cheap? Wholesale electricity prices have decreased dramatically in New England. But we still pay some of the highest electric rates in the country.

Why buy a cow when milk is so cheap? I first heard this male chauvinistic line when I was perhaps 10 years old. The reference to a woman is unmistakable. So is the analogy to sex (tình dục) outside of marriage (ngoài hôn nhân). Premarital (tiền hôn nhân), mostly.

My parents were gossiping (tán gẫu), mainly over my head, and a scrap drifted down in my father's voice: "Why buy a cow, when milk is so cheap?" I asked what that meant, and my parents laughed. "Your father is talking about what happens when men and women live together without being married," my mom explained, in a lower voice.

"If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain" = nếu núi không đến với Mohammed thì Mohammed phải đi đến núi -> nghĩa là phải thay đổi hành động của mình cho phù hợp khi mọi thứ diễn ra không như mong đợi; tiếng Việt có câu "Trời không chịu Đất thì Đất phải chịu Trời" đó các bạn :)

Ví dụ
“’Mediation (hòa giải) on Wheels.’ What if you lived in a far-flung area and did not have the financial means (phương tiện tài chính) to travel to one of these centres? “This was the problem we had to resolve. As the old saying goes, ‘If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, then Mohammed must go the mountain.’ “In human interaction (tiếp xúc), there is always conflict (mâu thuẫn) and not everyone has the means or wherewithal (phương tiện cần thiết) to settle these conflicts in the traditional method in the courts.”

Unlike other newspapers, we will not expect people to pay for our content. We will not even expect them to travel to a stationery. If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, then Mohammed must go to the mountain. We will be freely available in hotspots (điểm nóng) around Malta, ready for pickup at your convenience (tiện nghi).

As the saying goes, if the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed will go to the mountain. I feel the same about Ikea. More years than I care to remember ago, I flounced (hối hả) back to New Zealand from Europe and unpacked a shipping container stuffed with Ikea goodies that (dare I say it) felt a little fancy at the time.
