"Frog face" nghĩa là gì?

Coi nhìn cái bản mặt nó kìa! Photo by David Clode on Unsplash

"Frog face" (mặt ếch) là thuật ngữ chỉ những người thô lỗ đặc biệt bởi vì họ thiếu kỹ năng xã hội, ngốc nghếch hoặc do tính cách vốn dĩ quái gỡ.

Ví dụ
The big question was whether the public, especially in the US, was ready to drive around town in a frog face.

Political discourse (bài diễn thuyết) goes low, Congress MP (nghị sĩ Quốc hội) says CPM state secretary has a ‘frog’ face. The Congress MP's remarks were aimed at Balakrishnan, the CPM state secretary and the party's highest-ranking official (viên/công chức) in Kerala.

Stephen Colbert returned from vacation Monday to torch Donald Trump and the U.S. delegation’s visit to England, a trip hosted by the royal family. To drive his many jokes home, Colbert dusted off (phủi) his POTUS (abbreviation for President of the United States) and Treasury Secretary (Bộ trưởng Tài chính) Steve Mnuchin impressions, as well as one for a generic Buckingham Palace butler (quản gia) of sorts. He still had them down pat (vỗ nhẹ/vỗ về)— especially the Mnuchin frog face. Colbert also invoked (viện chứng) Netflix series “The Crown” to emphasize the absurdity (vô lý/ngớ ngẩn).

"At death's door" = ở cửa tử -> nói giảm nói tránh về việc ai đó bệnh rất nặng, có thể không qua khỏi.

Ví dụ
His skin was so pale, he looked like he was at death's door.

As Morgan Jones, Lennie James has been among the most enduring (lâu dài) faces of the Walking Dead franchise, appearing in the pilot episode (tập chiếu thử đầu tiên) and ultimately becoming the leading man on spinoff Fear the Walking Dead. Those days may be over, based on the Fear season five finale, which ends with Morgan quite literally at death's door.

The evening draws its formidable (dữ dội) strength from its central character. Stone has built the production around Pretty Yende’s Violetta, and the South African soprano (giong nữ cao) makes the part entirely her own. From the glittering coloratura (nét lèo) of the first act to the heart-rending (đau lòng) drama of the last, she has all the flexibility and the weight this chameleon (người không kiên định) role demands, and she has mesmerising charisma (sức hút lôi cuốn). It takes some persuasive theatrical skills to make us believe that a woman as strong and toned as Yende could be at death’s door, but she has them.

"Put one's face on" -> trang điểm, make-up.

Ví dụ
Jill's still busy putting on her face.

This is me. This is my face. My daughters look at this face every day and I want them to see that I love my face just as much as they do. I don’t need to ‘put my face on’ before I walk in the world.

“I saw him in his clown face almost as much as his normal face,” Spencer Horsman remembers. As a kid, he loved to watch his dad put his face on, carefully setting it with baby powder to keep it from melting off with sweat. Sometimes, exhausted after a long day of performing, he’d fall asleep with his makeup on.

"Smoke like a chimney" nghĩa là gì?

"Ống khói tàu" đi rồi! Photo courtesy: Mildiou

"Smoke like a chimney" có từ "chimney" là ống khói = hút như ống khói -> những người hút thuốc liên tục, liên miên.

Ví dụ
My granddad, who smoked like a chimney and lived to 97, was lucky enough never to encounter a promoter (người quảng bá).

The all too common ‘alternative’ is nowhere to be found here. Only a raunchy familiarity (quen thuộc sắc sảo) and a call-back (nhớ lại) to grin-worthy ACDC-esque Australiana. Lyrically, there’s humour and a tongue-in-cheek (lời nói đùa mỉa mai) likability—as always with these party boys—and the temptation (cám dỗ) stands to “smoke like a chimney and drink like a fish.”

The smokers drifted in from the balcony. One said, “I eat everything organic but I smoke like a chimney.” Olly told a story about a friend of theirs who is vegan through the week but gets drunk on weekends and binge-eats (ăn liên tục) chicken nuggets. Someone was remembering the last time they took LSD (ma túy). Alexa looked appalled (kinh sợ). She had to “trip-sit” (canh chừng) friends on LSD once. They started to vomit. She would not trip-sit again.

"Get out of one's hair" = ra khỏi tóc tôi -> ngưng làm phiền hoặc ngừng việc trở thành gành nặng của ai đó.

Ví dụ
And I'll get out of your hair soon. You will get no problems from me man.

Yes, she’s the worst, but he needs to keep up the facade (vẻ ngoài) that the FBI believes she’s on their side as she hands over files that implicate (ngụ ý) Hank Crawford and HCI in past corruption. So, he tells Madeline, who’s in the middle of getting Zapata to track down a hacker named Del Toro who can crash an airplane and secure her a hefty (nặng) defense contract, that if he can get a few more HCI files from her, he’ll be sure to get out of her hair faster than the FBI usually would.

“I could pontificate (lên mặt phán, nhưng thật ra không biết gì), but I’m going to answer your question very succinctly (ngắn gọn) — no,” Finebaum said earlier this season. “Pac-12, get out of my hair, man. Every year they tease (chọc ghẹo, khiêu khích) us and every year they blow (làm hỏng) the opening game. Last year it was Washington in a close one against Auburn. This time it was Oregon. Auburn was struggling. They were almost out of this game, and somehow Mario Cristobal mismanaged (quản lý tồi) the game clock. He mismanaged the plays. With a really good quarterback in Justin Herbert, they found a way to lose. Give Auburn credit. They won at the end with a freshman quarterback, but come on, Oregon was their last big chance. Stanford? USC? Utah? Please.”

Thôi xong... Lật rồi! Photo by Mohamed Nohassi on Unsplash

"Turn turtle" chỉ hành động lật ngược lại, lật ngửa (như rùa lật). Cụm từ này cũng thường được dùng để miêu tả lật tàu/thuyền.

Ví dụ
There are baths too deep to get out of, so you have to turn turtle and push yourself up and out.

Due to some reason he lost control over the wheels (bánh xe) of the vehicle causing it to turn turtle.

Just as the song in Vikrithi goes, a smartphone camera is a one-eyed window to the world that has the ability to tear apart lives as well as mend (hàn gắn) broken bonds (liên kết/mối quan hệ). Vikrithi is essentially about a bunch of good people -with 'textbook goodness' - and how their lives turn turtle through a viral (lan nhanh như vi-rut) photograph.

"Crazy like a fox" (điên như cáo) là cụm từ chỉ những người rất xảo quyệt, mưu mô trong khi bên ngoài tỏ ra ngốc nghếch, khờ khạo, điên khùng.

Ví dụ
The other producer points out that Judy may be crazy, but she's crazy like a fox. She will never record the songs until the end.

Heath Ledger brilliantly gave us the quintessential (thuần tuý) Joker, a murderous (giết người) punk (rác rưởi/kẻ xấu) who’s crazy like a fox, in “The Dark Knight.” But Phoenix’s version stands on its own as a much different, emotionally wrenching (đau đớn/khổ sở) interpretation (sự giải thích).

"This is crazy but it's crazy like a fox," Clinton said. "If the Republicans (đảng Cộng hoà) and Trump and his supporters in the media can muddy (vấy bẩn) the waters and raise all kinds of crazy conspiracy (âm mưu) theories, then maybe people won't pay attention to the danger he poses to our country."

"Play a bit part in" nghĩa là gì?

Dù xuất hiện mấy giây cũng phải lung linh chớ! Photo by on Unsplash

"Play a bit part in something" nghĩa là đóng một phần, vai trò rất nhỏ, không quan trọng (trong một vở kịch, bộ phim, chương trình nào đó; hoặc trong kết quả, hậu quả của hành động nào đó).

Ví dụ
Already looking to be in the form of his career, Valtteri Bottas served definitive (đáng tin cậy) notice that this season he is refusing to play a bit part in the title fight by taking pole for the Chinese Grand Prix.

They uploaded the resulting photos on a free website called GigSalad, where actors and entertainers can connect with clients who want them to show up at a company Christmas party or play a bit part in a commercial.

Reece Shearsmith delights in a wonderfully Machiavellian depiction (khắc họa) of Vladimir Putin. While he does play a bit-part in the main story, he mainly functions as narrator (người kể chuyện), regularly breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. With many of the play’s events unfolding in London, it does feel very meta to observe the Russian president baulk at the cost of a programme at a theatre which expects its patrons to use portaloos outside (The Old Vic is undergoing some refurbishment (sự tân trang) works).

Sao sáng nay không có chút sức lực nào hết vậy ta!! Photo by Ethan Sykes on Unsplash

"Not a blind bit of something" = không phải điểm mù của cái gì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không có chút gì đó.

Ví dụ
The case for referenda (cuộc bỏ phiếu của toàn dân) is that the nation makes known its will. But that is not a blind bit of use if our politicians disagree with it and try – as they are doing – to overturn (lật ngược) their declared wish.

“Most of the schools I am talking about, we have two teachers out, enforcement, tickets are issued and it makes not a blind bit of difference – parents do not care. They are just bothered about picking up their child and dropping them off.

The Aston representative said: “I support the People’s Protest. Many hard working families are pushed to the limit and that burden (gánh nặng) has now increased. “Working people are struggling (cố gắng) to live as it is and not a blind bit of notice has been taken.

"Play merry hell" -> nghĩa là làm ai/cái gì rối tung lên.

Ví dụ
You should know that the game will play merry Hell with your iPhone's battery life. After around 45 minutes of empire (đế chế) building, I'd noticed that my handset had taken a 25% hit to its battery. Such is life.

Perhaps he'll take voluntary retirement (giải nghệ). Time travel might even give him the chance to return to his original era (kỉ nguyên), although that would admittedly play merry hell with the timeline.

Rowley emphasised (nhấn mạnh) that the team is pushing verticality with Cyberpunk 2077, so expect to find yourself ascending towering structures and taking routes that will play merry hell with your vertigo (chóng mặt).
