"Down to a fine art" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Igor Peftiev on Unsplash

"Down to a fine art" = đến mức thành nghệ thuật -> thành thạo/thành thục, học và hiểu rất sâu/rất rõ, đến mức hầu như rất ít hoặc không tập trung/cố gắng cũng làm được/hoàn thành việc gì; kiểu (làm bài kiểm tra) dễ đến mức 'nhắm mắt viết tay trái' cũng được đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
While the Queen is rarely seen without a statement lipstick, and even more exuberantly (hoa văn, hoa mỹ) hued (đầy màu săc) clothing, Duchess’s Catherine and Meghan have got nude make-up down to a fine art.

BRITISH adults of all ages have revealed (công bố) a host of tricks and powers they believe they have down to a fine art - with one in ten truly believing they have the power to make anyone fall in love with them.

"One more to go after this one and he has equalled (ngang bằng) Schumacher, which was considered to be almost unreachable (không thể đạt được). "Year-in and year-out, he has delivered against all comers in all situations and he has got this down to a fine art now, the way he goes about it.

"Fire and brimstone" = Hỏa ngục và diêm sinh/lửa và lưu huỳnh -> Mô tả sự đau đớn và việc bị trừng phạt nơi địa ngục hoặc đơn giản chỉ là lối nói để hù dọa ai.

Ví dụ
The group introduced religious themes and the intense frontman's (phát ngôn viên) fire-and-brimstone Baptist delivery to the regional style of modern alt-country.

National MP Harete Hipango made a fire-and-brimstone contribution, saying "this is a bill that seeks to kill people". "I seek to kill this bill because of the repugnancy (mối ác cảm, sự chống lại) of what it seeks to do," she said.

Each character understands that they are dead, and they assume that they are in hell, expecting the usual fire and brimstone. But as time wears on they gradually realize their predicament (điều đã được tiên đoán trước): Their eternal punishment (sự trừng phạt muôn đời) will be to stew over the crimes that they don’t yet acknowledge that they have committed, either to themselves or to each other. As one character remarks, it turns out that they are to be their own torturers (người tra tấn, người làm khổ về thể xác lẫn tinh thần).

"Take them apart" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alexander Andrews on Unsplash

"Take something/someone apart" nghĩa là tách cái gì thành từng bộ phận; phê bình ai/cái gì một cách nghiêm khắc.

Ví dụ
According to reports in the Spanish press (báo chí), crime gangs (băng nhóm tội phạm) who sell the vehicles overseas or take them apart before selling the parts are responsible for much of this type of crime.

The ceiling of the pergola (khung dây leo) is wood Guy reclaimed (tái chế) from a forage (thức ăn cho súc vật) box, an endeavor (nỗ lực) that took quite some time. "I got it down by Minneapolis," he says. "It was a day of labor to take them apart. That was a process."

But, let me make this clear. I am not denigrating (xem thường) the workers with their boots on the ground. No, I have been there. I am talking about management. The biggees in their fancy offices and get their bonuses every year. They are the cause of all this shenanigans (hành vi tai quái, sự bịp bợm). But who can stop them? It has to be some one with the intelligence and know-how that can take them apart and make them suffer. Where is that person?

"Fire into" nghĩa là gì?

"Fire (someone or something) into (something)" = Bắn ai đó/giải thoát ai đó khỏi điều gì/giải quyết xong việc gì/sa thải ai đó ra khỏi một công việc.

Ví dụ
With Dons scoring just once in their last two league games - the 4-0 defeat (thất bại, thua trận) to Peterborough and the 2-1 reverse (ngược lại) against Accrington - Nombe's goals could fire him into contention (sự cãi nhau, tranh chấp) for a more regular slot in Paul Tisdale's League One squads.

This should provide an entertaining clash (động chạm, ẩu đả) between an offensive (tấn công, đả kích) and a defensive-minded player. Pliskova will likely do the majority of the attacking in this match, backed by a powerful serve and forehand. Azarenka at the peak (đỉnh cao, đỉnh điểm) of her powers was one of the best defenders in the game, and her return of serve was particularly impressive. If she is regularly able to return Pliskova’s serves with interest, it could just fire her into the second round.

Had SoftBank taken control of The We Co., WeWork’s official name, then it would be required under accounting rules to consolidate (củng cố, hợp nhất) the company into the Japanese company’s financial statements, effectively bringing that dumpster (thùng đựng rác to) fire into its own living room. All that WeWork debt — $22 billion at the end of June, as well as future loans (khoản cho vay) needed to fulfill the $47 billion lease payments in coming years — would be added to the $137 billion of liabilities (khoản nợ) already on junk-rated SoftBank’s balance sheet.

"Hang in the balance" = (bấp bênh) ở trên cân (ko ngả hẳn về phía nào) -> trạng thái bất định, không ai biết chuyện gì sẽ xảy ra.

Ví dụ
World leaders are meeting to discuss the situation, with peace in the region hanging in the balance.

Sen. (thượng nghị sĩ) Elizabeth Warren released a plan on Thursday aimed at protecting the rights of LGBTQ Americans, many of whose livelihoods (nghề nghiệp) hang in the balance as they await the Supreme Court’s decision in three landmark (cột mốc) discrimination (kỳ thị) cases.

Yet despite the severity (nghiêm trọng, gay go) and amount of wounds suffered by both Boeing and Muilenburg (who the company’s board of directors stripped of (cách chức) his chairman role on Oct. 11), none of the bad news seems to have been fatal to the company's brand. The next few months, however, will be critical—and both Boeing and its CEO's futures hang in the balance. Can the company smoothly get the 737 MAX back into the sky? And can the airplane maker and airlines get passengers back into seats?

"Hang by a thread" = treo bằng sợi chỉ -> tình trạng rất hiểm nghèo, khó vượt qua. Tiếng Việt gọi là "ngàn cân treo sợi tóc".

Ví dụ
The player's career is hanging by a thread after this latest injury to his knee.

The Softbank takeover (tiếp quản) comes as WeWork’s low cash reserves hang by a thread; the company was recently forced to delay layoffs (cắt giảm) because it couldn’t afford severance (đền bù thôi việc) costs, the Journal reported.

It’s fitting if Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) or fellow members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Giáo hội các Thánh hữu Ngày sau của Chúa Giê Su Ky Tô) (LDS) help fulfill (hoàn thành) an 1843 prophecy (lời tiên tri) attributed (quy cho) to their faith: One day, the U.S. Constitution “will hang by a thread and a Mormon (Giáo hội Mặc Môn; là một giáo hội Kitô giáo lớn và nổi tiếng nhất trong phong trào Thánh hữu ngày sau), or a group of Mormons, will save the nation.”

"Fire (someone) with anger" = lửa giận (ngùn ngụt) -> Gây ra cảm xúc rất tức giận trong ai.

Ví dụ
Over time, Tenley started to notice what she later came to view as red flags in the relationship. He would text her constantly (nhắn tin cho cô liên tục) throughout the day, firing him with anger when she didn’t respond. He’d make her block random people or remove them from her social media.

Lydia's mother, Michelle Roberts, spoke to MailOnline after the inquest (cuộc điều tra một vụ chết bất thường) into her daughter's death. She said: "Adam has been allowed to carry on with his life while we are still here, suffering. "He has changed his name and got a new job. As a family, it fires us with anger about what has happened."

These are the first pictures of paedophile (người có quan hệ tình dục với trẻ em; kẻ ấu dâm) Adam Wells whose girlfriend took her own life after discovering sickening (ghê tởm) images on his phone. They emerged (nảy ra vấn đề) as the mother of tragic (xấu số, bi kịch) Lydia Roberts fired her with anger at her daughter's former boyfriend (bạn trai trước đó) being "allowed to carry on with his life".

Kids are notorious (nổi tiếng) for getting sick in the winter months, runny noses and sneezes go hand in hand with the Canadian climate, but when are they too sick for school?

Discourse (diễn thuyết) on the 2005 National Sports System Law has picked up, with several influential (có ảnh hưởng) people in the country’s sports landscape (bối cảnh) calling for the law to be reassessed (đánh thuế lại, phạt lại) by reaffirming (tái xác nhận) the roles of those on the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and National Sports Council (KONI). "Set someone/something apart (from someone/something)" nghĩa là làm ai/cái gì tách hẳn ra (hơn hẳn, khác hẳn, nổi bật hơn mọi người/mọi thứ).

Ví dụ
All are far from perfect, hampered (bị cản trở) by glitches (sự cố nhỏ) including over-stylisation (sự cách điệu hóa quá mức) and blatant symbolism. Yet the urgency and ferocity (tính dữ tợn, tính hung ác) of their DNA have set them apart from most Turkish films released this year.

“The brand development, encompassed (bao gồm) a number of fact-finding sessions (buổi tìm hiểu thực tế), which were really useful to really get under the skin of the team and the unique laid-back (thoải mái) approach that is so apparent Cowgills. Elsewhere, the models see the addition of various aesthetic (về thẩm mỹ) enhancements to set them apart from their standard counterparts. A handful of equipment, usually optional, also comes as standard on Polestar Engineered cars.

"Be breathing fire" nghĩa là gì?

Ai thích xem ảo thuật, điểm danh phát nào? Photo by Shaun Salmon

"Be breathing fire" = Đang phun lửa -> Ai đó đang thể hiện sự tức giận của mình.

Ví dụ
I found out a few weeks ago that I am pregnant (mang thai) with our fourth child and I don’t know what to do. My husband hasn’t spoken to me properly since I told him. I know he is breathing fire and feels let down (thất vọng) and is 100 per cent blaming (đổ lỗi) me.

It may not seem like it, but anger is a pretty complicated emotion (cảm xúc rất phức tạp). Many times it's not a case of someone just breathing fire. According to experts (chuyên gia), there is a connection between anger and vulnerability (tổn thương). When someone's lashing out (đả kích, xỉ vả), there's usually something more going on beneath the surface.

Justin the Sun is back, and this time around, he seems to be breathing fire. The start crypto (hội viên bí mật) kid means business! After announcing his support for the Binance trading competition of WIN token, the founder and CEO of cryptocurrency platform (nền tảng, mô hình) Tron has now gone an extra mile.

"A fire extinguisher" = Bình chữa cháy -> Người can dự vào một cuộc hẹn hò của cặp đôi nào đó để ngăn/dập tắt cảm xúc đang nồng cháy và rạo rực giữa họ. Người này còn được gọi là "chaperone" (bà đi kèm/người phụ nữ lớn tuổi đi theo cô gái trẻ và còn độc thân đến buổi hẹn hò hay các sự kiện và tiệc tùng ở nơi đông người).

Ví dụ
A new ‘elite’ (cao cấp, xa xỉ) dating agency has been set up in Devon offering face to face vetting (kiểm tra chặt chẽ) and a discreet (dè dặn, kín đáo) chaperone service on dates to make people feel safer.

Enter the fire extinguisher, or the dad figure. At least that’s how I felt. As often as I dine (ăn cơm trưa chiều) with strangers for work, I have to admit I was a little tentative (ngập ngừng) about interrupting (gián đoạn) what I imagined to be their good time. But Jake and Emily turned three’s a crowd into three’s company, peppering (hỏi dồn dập) me with as many questions as I had for them.

“I have an entire packet from students’ statements that I will be handing over to the board. This is way above my daughter,” she said. The woman said her daughter reported the incident to a parent chaperone the night of the dance and waited for nearly an hour with her friends until her mother got to the school. "When I arrived my daughter was sitting at a table crying. I walked in and sat down next to her and asked what happened,“ she said. Her daughter was too distraught (mất trí, điên cuồng) to speak so an administrator told the girl’s mother that her daughter had been sexually assaulted (bị tấn công tình dục).

"Stand apart from someone/something" nghĩa là đứng tách rời khỏi ai/cái gì; khác biệt, dễ nhận thấy, dễ phân biệt với những người/vật khác.

Ví dụ
Just as Sanders and Warren have distinguished themselves (nổi bật, gây chú ý) on domestic matters (vấn đề trong nước), they stand apart from their rivals (đối thủ) when it comes to defining the role the US should have in the world.

Mimyo, chief editor (biên tập viên chính) of Idology, feels they have a bit more work to do. "TXT for now don't stand out much in terms of skill but what to note is their production is good." But he does think that they stand apart from big brother BTS.

"It's an indication (sự biểu lộ) of our neutrality (thái độ trung lập)," Pflaum continued. "We really do stand apart from any other collaboration platform in that neutrality and the breadth (sự phóng khoáng, sự rộng rãi) of apps that we integrate with deeply."

Historically Jews have chosen to keep themselves apart from the majority culture, not because of a sense of superiority (sự tốt hơn, vượt trội hơn), but because of the practice of a different lifestyle.

As 2019 begins, Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Poco, is carrying a lot of hype (sự cường điệu) on its shoulders. Tăng giảm chóng cả mặt. Photo by André François McKenzie on Unsplash

"Rise/ shoot up like a rocket (and fall like a stick)" = tăng nhanh như tên lửa -> chỉ sự tăng trưởng nhanh chóng (và cũng suy thoái nhanh chóng).

Ví dụ
Vietnam mattress imports (nhập khẩu nệm) are rising like a rocket, government figures reveal (tiết lộ). And other countries, such as Mexico, are also seeing strong growth.

Heimlich rescheduled his interview for another day and then ... heard nothing until a much-belated (muộn màng) rejection letter arrived two years later like a ghost from the past in July 2015. Rocket Fuel rose like a rocket, but it soon fell like a stick.

We have not yet reached the “distress” stage but we might be near it. Worries about the security of cryptocurrencies (tiền mật mã) could be the trigger (gây ra) for another sell-off. At that point, the price could fall as quickly as it rose—as the saying goes “up like a rocket, down like a stick”.

"Be torn apart" nghĩa là bị chia rẽ, bị chia cắt (thường trong hôn nhân, gia đình).

Ví dụ
Putin himself repeated many times that it’s hard to deal with a United States that is torn apart by internal fighting (nội chiến).

When a Welsh community is torn apart by a huge explosion that kills a number of people, including children, Polly Bevan finds herself at the centre of the tragedy (bi kịch).

In Star Wars: The Awakening of Strength, Ben Solo, the man behind Kylo Ren's mask, tells his father Han that he is torn apart. He clearly has doubts (sự nghi ngờ) about his decision to engage in the dark side. Of course, Ren then makes a film to dispel (xua tan) his doubts. He kills his own father.

"(Sitting) like piffy on a rock bun" có nghĩa là điều gì đó dễ thấy nhưng lại bị lờ đi, bị bỏ rơi. "Rock bun" hay "rock cake" là loại bánh quy hoa quả có bề mặt nhám như cục đá. "Piffy" không rõ nghĩa, có thể là phần hạt nhỏ trên mặt bánh, dễ thấy.

Ví dụ
"Anything might happen. And I'd be sat here like Piffy on a rock bun waiting all day for you to come back."

'Where the bloody hell have you been?' she says to Luke, 'leaving me sitting there like piffy on a rock bun.'

“Well, I must confess (thủ nhận) I feel like piffy on a rock bun with the two of you,” said Fina. “But what about the first proverb? Could it be something related to a wolf in sheep's clothing?”

There was she, beaming into (cười rạng rỡ) her own remote lens, the object of all she surveyed (nghiên cứu), and there was he having to stand around like - if I may use an old northern expression - piffy on a rock bun.

"Rock up" có nghĩa là (đột nhiên) xuất hiện và cư xử thản nhiên (cho dù đến muộn.)

Ví dụ
You can’t just rock up to a League without doing your exercises, mind.

"He likes the free feeds," said Payne. "I'm sure he'll rock up for a free lunch here and there."

Derek, Devi, or one of the other presenters would promptly (nhanh chóng) rock up and confront the business owner, who would bust out some pretty incredible excuses (biện hộ), or bolt as they realised their goose was cooked (gặp rắc rối).

RTE’s expenses (chi phí) could also be cut in two if they rock up to one venue knowing that they are covering Tier 1 and Tier 2 games without having to increase spending – and that is a very important issue in the national broadcaster (đài truyền hình quốc gia) right now.

"Live apart from someone" nghĩa là sống riêng với ai đó (người mà đã từng ở chung trước đó hoặc người nên sống cùng như mối quan hệ vợ chồng với nhau).

Ví dụ
The actress, 47, explained her reasons behind the decision to live apart from Brad, 48, was to give their teenage children 'space' as she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday.

To minimise (giảm đến mức tối thiểu) the risk of spreading the infection (lan truyền bệnh lây nhiễm), MSF patients with MDR-TB are encouraged to live apart from others, with limited visits from family and friends during their treatment.

Her husband is a humanitarian coordinator (điều phối viên nhân đạo) for the United Nations (Liên Hợp Quốc) in Yemen, designated a “non-family station” because of the conflict there, so their son is being forced to live apart from both parents, with his aunt in Egypt.

"It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do something" hoặc "you don't have to be a rocket scientist (to do something)" = đó là điều đơn giản, bạn không cần phải cực kỳ tài giỏi/ thông minh để làm điều đó. "Rocket scientist" là nhà khoa học tên lửa.

Ví dụ
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that children cannot be in a place where there are illicit (bất hợp pháp) drugs. We understand that.

SpaceX seems to always be looking for more engineers and talented workers. But there are other types of jobs under Elon Musk's company that don't require being a rocket scientist.

I read the praise to the people of Kinsey for fighting off the trash depot. I congratulate them, too. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the difference between the folks in Kinsey who fought off the stink (mùi hôi thối) and the folks that fought to eliminate (loại bỏ) the daily stink they are being exposed to in Dothan.

"As solid as a rock" hoặc "steady as a rock" = rắn như đá -> vững như bàn thạch, ổn định, mạnh mẽ, đáng tin cậy.

Ví dụ
Today the couple are solid as a rock and enjoying life with their new baby boy and a healthy relationship with Scrappy’s daughter from a previous relationship.

Yet these difficult conditions have made Anvil what they are today: a band that stands solid as a rock in the turbulent (hỗn loạn) waters of a musical genre that produces like no other music by fans for fans.

Lucy in the Sky is flat and cold and terribly dull, despite decent work from Portman and her co-stars, including Jon Hamm as her philandering (tán tỉnh) astronaut flame, Dan Stevens as her steady-as-a-rock husband, Zazie Beetz as the other woman, and Ellen Burstyn as Lucy’s foul-mouthed (hôi miệng), chain-smoking (nghiện thuốc lá) Nana.

"Get (one's) rocks off" có nghĩa là "lên đỉnh", đạt cực khoái (trong quan hệ tình dục, ở nam giới). "Rock" là từ lóng thay cho tinh hoàn. Cụm từ này cũng có nghĩa là đạt được niềm vui, sự hài lòng.

Ví dụ
She’s scowly (cau có) and tough, and clearly isn’t fond of our hero. Can’t really blame her, since he is constantly getting his rocks off by demonstrating (chứng tỏ) how much cleverer he is.

Benedetti’s and Brown’s chemistry (ăn ý) is undeniable, and it doesn’t hurt that they speak sexy Italian throughout. If you’re deep in your feelings and want to think about your ex while getting your rocks off, press play.

One of the biggest perks (lợi ích) of being mega-famous in the music business is that you don’t need Tinder to get your rocks off. "Fly apart" nghĩa là rơi vỡ thành từng mảnh, vỡ tan.

Only problem is, I didn’t manage to get it to stick firmly (chắc chắn) enough and it would suddenly fly apart. Luckily I wasn’t anywhere where the tablet could fly off as well, but it’s just possible.

Ví dụ
If you're worried you may be drifting apart from your spouse (bạn đời, vợ/chồng), there's a few ways you can turn things around in your relationship and learn how to save your marriage.

Ví dụ
Immediately, my last week’s Atkins resolution to eat nothing but protein and a few low-carb veggies (rau) came to mind. Was this a small change? No, it was not. It was more like a gag-me-with-a-spoon radical (triệt để) change.

Well gag me with a spoon. I would've put good money on Bethesda's Wolfenstein: Youngblood debuting (ra mắt) at the top of the UK Charts this week, given the mainstream gaming public's natural propensity (xu hướng) to drift toward shooters. But it was not to be, as Nintendo's fantasy warfare title Fire Emblem: Three Houses made a glorious debut at the number one spot.
