"Rice rocket" nghĩa là gì?

Nước láng giềng - Thái Lan cũng có loại xe này. Photo courtesy prayforsnow

"Rice-rocket" = phản lực gạo -> là từ lóng nói đến loại ô tô nhẹ và nhanh, nhập khẩu từ Nhật Bản hoặc các nước Đông Á. Đây được coi là cách nói mang tính phân biệt chủng tộc bởi "rice" (gạo) tượng trưng cho các nước châu Á ăn chúng.

Ví dụ
This Japanese rice-rocket is unquestionably the most heroic form of transport since the Apollo 11 lunar module.

One thing driveshaft (khiến) me crazy.. they use the wrong sound for her motorcycle!! They use a sport bike/ rice rocket sound for a Harley/ sportster type bike.. it’s all wrong!!

In fact, this little rice rocket already has an insane power to weight ratio thanks to its 1,441 cc four-stroke inline four-cylinder engine (động cơ xi-lanh) pumping out 207 horsepower (mã lực) on a chassis (gầm xe) that only weighs 593 lbs soaking wet.

Oh, don’t worry — despite using an offensive term like “rice rocket,” using pidgin (ngôn ngữ pha trộn, đơn giản hóa) English to describe what Asians might say, and calling white men who marry Asian women “suckers,” Ignatius doesn’t back down from her statements.

"Rock the foundations of" nghĩa là gì?

Phóng viên đưa tin giật gân, nhưng không ai giật mình. Photo by Redrecords ©️ from Pexels

"Rock the foundations of something" = rung chuyển nền tảng của điều gì -> tác động lên bản chất, giá trị hoặc niềm tin của cái gì.

Ví dụ
In a promo released a few days ago, 60 Minutes said the episode would feature “a story so important it can’t be missed”, which was “set to rock the foundations of Australia”.

Amon Amarth, (yes, their drums sit on top of a giant Viking helmet) and Behemoth will rock the foundations of King John’s Norman castle built in 1200 which is built on a Viking site that dates back to 922.

The second striking commonality (điểm chung nổi bật) among Auer proponents (người đề xuất) at SCOTUSblog is their excessive speculation (suy xét quá mức). Specifically, each scholar voiced the alarming possibility that overturning Auer would rock the foundations of administrative law (luật hành chính).

"Moving three times is as bad as a fire" nghĩa là gì?

Xe hư rồi lấy gì để chở đồ sang nhà mới? Photo by VanveenJF

"Moving three times is as bad as a fire" = Ba lần chuyển nhà giống như một lần cháy nhà -> Chuyển nhà tận ba lần thì mọi thứ thiệt hại y như một lần cháy nhà/tác động của việc thay đổi quá nhiều quá nhanh có thể dẫn đến những khó khăn và rủi ro nhiều hơn so với việc vẫn giữ sự kiên định hay không dao động.

Ví dụ
Every time I move my house, I make three items broken at least as a saying: "Moving three times is as bad as a fire".

In a month, they has changed the rules three times which is so complicated and hard to obey, they think that the new ones will make all members more disciplined (có kỷ luật). But unluckily, some members don't accept it all and they left their jobs. This is a true fact of "Moving three times is as bad as a fire".

Of course, the risk is that, as the expression goes, “moving three times is as bad as a fire”. In other words, with the economy having lost its lustre (vinh quang, ánh sáng rực rỡ) in recent years, and with political uncertainty likely to remain high, there is a risk that the BoE goes too far, too fast — and that they crunch (nhai, nghiến răng) confidence.

"Hit the sawdust trail" nghĩa là gì?

Trong đêm, một bàn chân bước... Photo by Johannes Plenio on Unsplash

Several of those meetings made religious history in Union County. They caused thousands to “hit the sawdust trail,” and unquestionably the good they did was tremendous (to lớn).

Afterward (sau đó), Sunday invited those who "wished to be saved by the Lord" to "come forward." (tiến lên) Many chose to accept the "call to Christ" gingerly (thận trọng/rón rén) walking across the sawdust-laden floor in a practice that had come to be known as "hitting the sawdust trail."

After his conversion to Christ, Billy Sunday hit the “sawdust trail” and moved America with his passionate preaching (thuyết giáo/thuyết giảng). He is said to have drawn (lôi kéo, lôi cuốn, thu hút) more press (báo chí) than World War I. And, like Moody before him, preached to more than 100 million people.

"Last burst of fire" nghĩa là gì?

Trước khi chia tay anh có lời cuối cùng nào cho em không? Photo by Artyom Korshunov

"Last burst of fire" = Ngọn lửa bùng cháy cuối cùng/viên đạn nổ cuối cùng -> Nổ lực/sự cố gắng cuối cùng trước sự thất bại hay thua trận.

Ví dụ
When revealed however, we would not have a new name on the trophy (cúp, chiến tích) for it was defending champion Rockybay Foley who etched (khắc sâu) his name yet further in the history books by going back-to-back in the Laurels, despite a wonderful last burst of fire from our local hopeful Grangeview Ten.

What remains of General Leia Organa’s tattered Resistance (sự đối kháng, chịu đựng tả tơi, xé từng vụn) after The Last Jedi has pulled out all the stops for to hold out one last time against the onslaught (sự tấn công dữ dội) of the First Order, now under the command (lệnh) of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren—and now, we get to see what will become of their last burst of fire . And also so many spaceships (phi thuyền, tàu vũ trụ).

That last group of rounds, fired while the SUV was fleeing (lẩn trốn, bỏ chạy), were sufficient to support the jury’s verdicts (lời phán quyết của hội thẩm đoàn) of guilty on the three counts of attempted murder (of Davis’ three friends in the car) and the throwing missiles (đầu đạn, đạn phản lực) charge. That is, the jury was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that this last burst of fire could not be justified as lawful self-defense (tự vệ).

"If you play with fire, you get burned" nghĩa là gì?

"If you play with fire, you get burned" = Nếu chơi với lửa thì có ngày bị bỏng/thiêu -> Bạn sẽ bị đau khổ/chịu đựng sự đau đớn nếu bạn làm điều nguy hiểm nào đó.

Ví dụ
IF you play with fire, you get burned. Play with fire as the Tories have been — by delaying and watering down Brexit until it feels like it won’t happen at all — and the party will become engulfed (nhấn chìm, xuống vực thẳm) in a destructive firestorm (bão lửa phá hủy).

If you play with fire, you get burned. It couldn't have been, literally (nghĩa gốc), more true in the case of this elderly person from Thiruvallur. Seventy-year-old Mani, of Jayalakshmi Nagar, was charred (đốt thành than) to death when he failed to stub out (dập tắt) a cigarette.

The old saying, “if you play with fire, you get burned,” certainly rings true for the 44 percent of burn injuries emergency rooms saw during the month surrounding the Fourth of July. Burn injuries were most commonly seen on the hands, fingers, and arms. Burn injuries on hands and fingers often result from (do từ việc, gây ra từ) getting burned while lighting a firework (pháo hoa) or holding a lit firework.

"The curtain falls on" nghĩa là gì?

Khi nào bác mới múa xong vậy, chán quá!! Photo by Sheerazi on Unsplash

"The curtain falls on (something)" = tấm màn phủ lên cái gì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cái gì đó kết thúc, chấm dứt, ngừng hoạt động.

Ví dụ
Pakistan are also scheduled to play three T20Is each against Australia (November 3, 5 and 8) and Bangladesh before the curtain falls on their international domestic season in early February 2020.

But the curtain falls on even the most storied career, and this past Monday Steve found himself in the community room of the Falcon substation (ga xép), a modest outpost (tiền đồn) that sits just south of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

In a country with an embarrassment of cultural and historical riches, a true list of must-visit places in India would be endless and even then wildly incomplete. But with the idea that any potential destination should be a few hours from Mumbai and should be something that's nothing too organized or involved, here then is The Hollywood Reporter's quick guide of places to go after the curtain falls on the fest (cuộc hội họp, cuộc sum họp).

"Curtain off" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Barry Weatherall on Unsplash

"Curtain (something) off" = kéo màn xuống -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ngăn cách cái gì hoặc một nơi nào đó bằng màn, rèm hoặc tấm chắn để không cho ai hoặc điều gì tiếp cận.

Ví dụ
In the video captured by CCTV, a group of policemen and police volunteers are seen standing around a man resting on a bed in an emergency room. Two of the volunteers then curtain off the bed and appear to punch the man repeatedly.

Regus decided to replace an outdated 75in TV screen in a high-end (tinh tế, sành điệu) meeting suite of their central Copenhagen facility. The overall requirement was to create a superb viewing experience for customers and visitors without having to curtain off a magnificent view out of the suite across the capital.

Glenn Wheatley told the ABC the loss was a "one-off" (việc chỉ xảy ra một lần) and denies he almost went bankrupt (bị vỡ nợ, bị phá sản). He also says he didn't change seating plans or curtain off venues to make them look full. He describes the tour as "a rare loss" but also a big loss, which, together with Michael Chugg, he took on the chin.

"Take the curtain" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ed Zavala on Unsplash

"Take the curtain"= tiếp nhận tấm màn -> cụm từ nghĩa là ra sân khấu sau những tràng vỗ tay hoan nghênh (thường chỉ cho diễn viên).

Ví dụ
Additionally (ngoài ra), his approach to the text allowed audiences to understand what this character was going through in this moment. Alagna, an incredible (xuất sắc) actor, took the curtain and wiped the character’s tears with it.

“[Drummer] Mitch [Mitchell] took the curtain, pulled it aside, says, ‘Oh my God,’” says Cox of taking the stage. “After I saw these people — oh, wow. Jimi, he says, ‘Man, they’re sending a lot of energy up to the bandstand (bục dàn nhạc). So what we’re going to do, we’re gonna grab some of that energy and send it right back to them.’ And that’s just what we did.”

We finally got in. It was a good production, which somehow made the play seem very Swedish and gloomy (u sầu) and emotional; the house was full, but whether because the play was successful or merely because people knew I was coming I don’t know; and I had to take the curtain with my actresses, and then make a speech, and then be photographed, and then hurry away to dress for a small dinner party of not more than 20 people at the house of my publisher (nhà xuất bản), Kaj Bonnier.

"Hire and fire" = Tuyển dụng và đào thải -> Tùy ý cho thôi việc, tùy ý sa thải ai/tuyển ai vào làm và nhanh chóng sa thải họ.

Ví dụ
Lanier — he launched his successful campaign to create a Cabinet system that allows governors to hire and fire many top state officials.

Labour vow (thề, hứa nguyện) to give football fans power to hire and fire club directors. Jeremy Corbyn meets Newcastle United supporters and criticises "bad owners" such as billionaire (tỉ phú) businessman Mike Ashley.

The Australian Christian Lobby has backed calls for religious (thuộc tôn giáo) businesses such as aged care providers to gain more powers of hiring and firing employees who do not conform (chuẩn mực, tuân theo) to religious teachings.

Chắc sắp bắt đầu cảnh rùng rợn lắm đây! Photo by stefano stacchini on Unsplash

"Lift the curtain on (something)" = kéo màn sân khấu lên -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bắt đầu, mở màn; công bố, đưa ra ánh sáng.

Ví dụ
Peterson will tell behind-the-scenes (bí mật, sau hậu trường) stories to lift the curtain on how he built languages like Dothraki and Valyrian for Game of Thrones and Shivaisith for Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World. His presentation is an inside look at a fascinating culture and an engaging entry into a flourishing (phát triển lớn mạnh) art form.

“Even as there is growing opposition (sự phản đối, chống đối), there is also growing support for the noble cause of UNFPA. It’s sad that some of these wrong impressions are deliberately (cố ý) misleading (sai lệch), in my opinion, and it is very important to put the truth forward,” she said, adding that the pushback against rights and choices of girls around the world has also led UNFPA to become even more stronger in insisting that it has to lift the curtain on these taboos and discuss these issues.

The Charlotte Business Journal’s signature Best Places to Work awards program turns a spotlight (sự chú ý cao độ) on companies around the region that have put in place policies and practices to attract top talent -- and keep them engaged. And the time has come to lift the curtain on our 2019 honorees (người được vinh danh). This awards program is based on employee surveys, conducted and scored by Quantum Workplace, that took place after a nomination (sự đề cử) process earlier this year.

Ví dụ
One Redditor commented, "Hey they can fire insults me if they send me some free stuff," before allowing, "However, in all seriousness that is really unprofessional. Wonder why their customer support thought that was an appropriate response."

The Kurds have made it clear that they view the U.S. withdrawal (sự rút khỏi, thu hồi) as a betrayal (sự phản bội). Video emerged Monday of Kurds pelting (trút xuống, đập mạnh ào ào) American vehicles with vegetables and firing insults at U.S. troops (cảnh sát, lính) as they drove out of Syria.

She has now apparently appealed to China's National Film Administration, asking that it demand changes to the way her father is depicted (miêu tả). In one scene, a cocky (vênh váo, tự phụ) Lee gets into a best-of-three fight with Brad Pitt's character, a stuntman (người đóng thế) named Cliff Booth, after the pair fire insults at each other. Lee is seen to win the first round, but is slammed into a vehicle in the second. The third never gets under way.

"Fire questions at" = Bắn/tra tấn hàng loạt câu hỏi -> Hỏi dồn dập ai một loạt các câu hỏi.

The judges seem to have finally caught up to his speed and fire questions at him one after the other. 5 minutes are left but there is no escape.

“One thing I absolutely need to do more of is quizzing (khảo vấn),” he says, “as I have a constant assessment of my cognitive (kinh nghiệm, dựa trên hiểu biết) skills. Luckily my fiancé (chồng sắp cưới) (whom he met on the quiz scene) is also a quizzer so I get him to fire questions at me.”

Like Radar O’Reilly in MASH, you can hear the sound of helicopters (trực thăng) approaching. On Thursday (Oct. 17) at 11 a.m. New York time, we will be holding a discussion on the terminal (phần cuối) on this month’s book club choice, The Case for the People’s Quantitative Easing by Frances Coppola, a defense of helicopter money. You will be able to fire questions at me, Coppola, and Bloomberg Opinion colleague Clive Crook.

The letters were sent to Stephanie Lay’s 19-year-old son Bryce in Windham, but were addressed to Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services — in Cincinnati, Ohio.

most of the letters said the company was denying a payment of $54. Some say $0. The claims go back to 2016. Lay began receiving the letters Thursday.

Lay first thought it was a joke. She says she’s spent countless hours trying to figure out how this happened, and says she was especially amused (rất buồn cười) by a line written at the bottom of every single one of the letters that says, “Go Paperless!”

"Fire drill" nghĩa là gì?

"Fire drill" = Biện pháp phòng hoả/Diễn tập cứu hoả -> Trong kinh doanh có các sự kiện, hoạt động tình huống vô ích, không sinh lợi và tốn thời gian hoàn thành/tình huống hay hoạt động cấp thiết, bất chợt hoặc mớ công việc phức tạp phải giải quyết.

Ví dụ
Please note that we have no fire drills scheduled for today. So in case of an alarm, I would like to point out the nearest emergency exits, which is behind you and through the door to the left.

That said, a lot of couples will start with something simple, she said, “and realize, 'we should do more.'” It comes down to “figuring out how that person who would be left behind, how do they digest information (thông tin phân loại, sắp đặt có hệ thống, tóm tắt có hệ thống) best? I tell couples sit down together, pretend something happens, it's almost like a fire drill: what would you do?” This drill helps expose holes (vạch trần những lỗ hổng) in a plan.

They went through -- you forgot there were four times that there were threats of tariffs (mối đe dọa của các xí nghiệp tránh thuế quan) going into effect, and then three of those four were postponed (trì hoãn). So Hasbro was going through these fire drills of getting expedited (được tiến hành, xúc tiến) shipping, warehousing (trữ kho) extra stock. And that, you can really understand. And we all know expedited shipping costs extra money, even if you're clicking on your Amazon.

"Hang fire" = (tạm) ngừng bắn -> Đợi một chút để hành động cho việc gì đó/đợi để đưa ra hành động quyết định/không làm bất cứ việc gì trong khi đợi thông tin/trì hoãn việc gì.

Ví dụ

Allegri attended Bayern Munich's sensational win (chiến thắng làm náo động dư luận, gây ra một sự xúc động mạnh mẽ) at Tottenham on Tuesday night and has also been linked to the Manchester United hotseat.

Apple's macOS 10.15 Catalina update is likely to land at some point this week, but the months-long beta process hasn't been plain sailing (tiến trình hành động không có gì rắc rối). Just like iOS and iPadOS 13, bugs (ảnh nhỏ trong quảng cáo) haven't been kind to Apple. But those bugs aren't the reason you might want to hang fire before updating.

"Draw a curtain over (something)" = kéo tấm rèm bao phủ cái gì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không đả động tới việc gì, cái gì.

Ví dụ
“The fact is, those areas still exist and there are still elements within them who can create problems at any particular time, so you really can’t draw a curtain over it and say that it has been solved,” said Forte, who urged (thúc giục) the public to assist the police in weeding out (loại trừ, gạt bỏ) criminal elements (phần tử tội phạm) by providing the police with information.

Answering the door at his home in Hexham, near Newcastle in northern England, Ian Clarke, the father of UK backpacker (khách du lịch phượt) Caroline Clarke, said he had knew of Milat's illness but had nothing more to say about him or the murder (vụ án mạng) of his daughter in 1992. "We are tired of telling the story," he said. "We really just want to draw a curtain over it. It's very draining."

Three years after Prince Rogers Nelson passed into the great beyond, his unfinished memoir (ký sự), The Beautiful Ones, is set to hit bookshops the world over. This wouldn’t have been a big deal in the case of most deceased (đã mất) musicians. Not because their stories wouldn’t be interesting enough, but because few icons have gone to the lengths Prince did to draw a curtain over every aspect of his personal life.
