"Make mincemeat out of " nghĩa là gì?

Phần thưởng của người chiến thắng. Photo by Fauzan Saari on Unsplash

"Make mincemeat out of" hoặc "make hamburger (out) of (someone)" có nghĩa là nghiêm khắc trừng trị ai, đánh bại hoàn toàn ai đó. "Mincemeat" là miếng thịt đã bị băm.

Ví dụ
Second-year tackle (ngăn cản) Kolton Miller struggled like any rookie his first season, but the former UCLA Bruin has bodied some of the best defensive ends in the league this season and made mincemeat out of them.

After a statement win over the New England Patriots in Week Nine, the Ravens have been making mincemeat out of their AFC North rivals in the Cincinnati Bengals, a game that has seen Jackson make perhaps his most-exceptional play yet.

“The AG’s office made mincemeat out of 1366 opponents (đối thủ). They methodically and meticulously (tỉ mỉ) defended I-1366 and completely decimated (tàn sát) every single one of opponents’ arguments,” Eyman exclaimed in a January 2016 email to supporters.

Tại sao 1+1 lại bằng 0 nhỉ? Photo by Jonathan Andrew from Pexels

"Chinese puzzle" = trò xếp hình bằng các miếng gỗ của Trung Quốc (mức độ khó cao) -> câu đố rắc rối, vấn đề rắc rối khó giải quyết.

Ví dụ
The unintended consequences (hậu quả không lường trước) in all this are “a Chinese puzzle, a really difficult puzzle,” according to Boeheim.

A Chinese puzzle: how do protesters (biểu tình) in Hong Kong believe wrecking railway stations, setting fires and throwing petrol bombs will bring them what they want?

The long life symbol inspired papers to dub (gán cho cái tên) the discovery of the mutilated corpse (xác chết) as a "Chinese Puzzle". The body was naked and anchored beneath the water with industrial weights and a hydraulic lorry jack (kích thủy lực).

How they figure this out is a Chinese puzzle, a really difficult puzzle. To make it legal and so that one guy doesn’t get this and what about these guys? And the quarterback (tiền vệ) and running back get this and the linemen (trọng tài biên) don’t get anything.

"Off like a prom dress" nghĩa là gì?

Sao về sớm vậy anh? Photo by Bella The Brave on Unsplash

"Off like a prom dress (in May)" = nhanh như trút bỏ đầm dạ hội -> cụm từ này mang tính hài hước, nghĩa là rời đi hoặc ra về rất nhanh và đột ngột. Hành động này được ví như sự hào hứng và nhanh lẹ trong việc quan hệ tình cảm sau buổi prom của các học sinh trung học Mỹ.

Ví dụ
Remember what a hosebeast you were about food when you were pregnant? You just morphed into The Beastmaster. Luckily, for some women, this means the baby weight comes off like a prom dress.

Perhaps the funniest meme came from John Cena. The WWE star was sitting in the crowd in civilian clothes (đồ xi-vin) when a uniformed official whispered something in his ear (NOT STAGED AT ALL), and suddenly Cena was off like a prom dress.

CRISPR has the ability to modify ova (trứng) and sperm (tinh trùng). Ethics (đạo đức) of modifying unborn generations is a whole OTHER article! Gene editing to treat human disease is "off like a prom dress!" to quote my favorite soccer announcer, Ray Hudson. There are several companies gearing up for human testing in a variety of genetic maladies (chứng bệnh), including cystic fibrosis (xơ nang). See how I set that up in Act I and paid it off here?

"A while back" nghĩa là gì?

Khi chúng mình còn trẻ Photo by Luizmedeirosph from Pexels

A while back = a while ago = một thời điểm nào đó trong quá khứ. Từ 'a while' ở đây dùng với nghĩa 'một khoảng thời gian ngắn'.

Ví dụ
A production leak from a while back seemed to hint (gợi ý, tiết lộ) that WandaVision would start filming earlier than expected.

Jack Puncochar booked a four-day weekend a while back, taking this coming Friday and Monday off work and planning to take his girlfriend to Arizona during the time off.

I had assumed this to be true when I first moved to Los Angeles County in the 1980s. I was quickly proved wrong — more than half of my coworkers (đồng nghiệp) and personal friends were born and raised in California. I’ve occasionally been in groups of people where I’m the only non-native Californian. One of my coworkers a while back was a fifth-generation Californian.

"Chinese fire drill" nghĩa là gì?

Khi vạch kẻ đường chỉ để trang trí :D. Photo by Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash

“Pendleton is going to be one huge Chinese fire drill when the mobilization (huy động) starts.” Dawkins said. “You'll be more productive there than here. There's a light colonel (đại tá) there—John X. O'Halloran, good man—as inspector/instructor (huấn luyện). You can use his office and people."

His political career has been fraught with controversy (đầy tranh cãi) and includes a pair of 2017 apologies. One apology stemmed from a video he posted of himself and a passenger sitting in a car and yelling “Chinese fire drill” before the pair got out of the car, ran around it and switched seats.

For the uninitiated (không biết gì), a "Chinese fire drill" can be described as a form of vehicular musical chairs. Here's how it works: A car full of people, usually teenagers, stops at a red light. Everyone then gets out and runs around the car until just before the light changes back to green, with all participants jumping inside the closest door. Anyone who fails to get back into the car is left behind as the rest zoom off.

"Like the clappers" nghĩa là gì?

"Like the clappers" nghĩa là cực kỳ nhanh và mạnh mẽ.

Ví dụ
In my experience cars that have turbochargers (máy nén kiểu tua-bin) installed tend to go like the clappers and be a heck of a lot of fun for a period before you have too much fun and - bang - catastrophe.

“Nutanix provides a standard environment, with a fast response,” said Maidment. “With it being so performant, it allows things to work quickly and on-premise. The main thing for DevOps is that it goes like the clappers.”

“We’ve been mobilising (huy động) some key voices to write to the university and put the case, and we are very, very pleased about the petition (đơn xin, kiến nghị) which has only been up for a short time and is going like the clappers.”

Long classified in Germany as “luxury goods” (hàng xa xỉ) taxed at the highest possible rate (mức thuế cao nhất có thể), tampons (nút bông, len hoặc vải thấm nước đặt vào âm hộ phụ nữ để thấm máu khi có kinh; băng vệ sinh), pads and other menstrual products will soon join bread (bánh mì), books (sách) and cut flowers on the list of items considered “necessary for everyday life.”

The change, set to take effect on Jan. 1, will reduce the tax on menstrual (thuộc/liên quan đến kinh nguyệt) products to 7 percent from 19 percent. Parliament passed the law last week, as a campaign to reduce the high taxes on period products spread across the globe.

While 75 percent of all items considered essential in Germany — and therefore taxed at the lower rate — are foodstuffs, the category also includes other, less obvious products. Cut flowers, books and newspapers, paintings, collectible coins, and theater tickets (vé xem hát/kịch) are also on the list.

Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, can be a colorless (không màu) to white substance (chất) appearing as flakes (bông (tuyết)), beads (giọt, hạt) or a granular form, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The substance can cause irritation (ngứa) to the eyes, burns (bỏng) to the skin (da) and a temporary loss of hair (rụng tóc tạm thời).

"Hit rough weather" nghĩa là gì?

"Hit rough weather" = gặp phải thời tiết xấu -> vấp phải khó khăn hoặc vấn đề nào đó.

Ví dụ
Nobody wants to interview that superstar anymore. The relationship between him and the media has hit rough weather.

In the backdrop (bố trí) of the launch of two pilot projects of ‘smart fencing’ along India’s International Border with Pakistan on Monday, a similar setup that was planned border along the Brahmaputra river in Dhubri later this month has hit rough weather.

For the past couple of months, UberEats has been reportedly looking out for a better deal to sell its loss-making Indian business. After its talk hit rough weather with food delivery major Swiggy, now UberEats is in talks with e-commerce major Amazon for a possible buyout (tiếp quản).

"Hit/touch a nerve" = đánh vào dây thần kinh -> khiêu khích ai đó bằng cách đề cập tới một vấn đề nhạy cảm.

Ví dụ
The Boston marathon bombing in 2013 hit a nerve across America; two brothers made a superpower (cường quốc) look vulnerable (có thể bị tổn thương) again.

Ciera Elledge heads (đứng đầu) Tent City project, a nonprofit that helps gather supplies for the homeless community. She said David Vann’s death hit a nerve with the organization.

Del Vecchio’s recent comments appear critical (then chốt) of the Mediobanca boss. He hit a nerve by suggesting the bank might do better by expanding more aggressively (hung hăng) in investment banking and relying less on income from its consumer finance business and its holding in the giant (khổng lồ) insurer Assicurazioni Generali SpA.

Tầm nhìn tốt. Photo courtesy: Randall Langenhoven

"Hindsight is 20/20" có từ "hindsight" là nhận thức muộn, sau khi xảy ra mới nhìn ra vấn đề và 20/20 nghĩa là mắt tốt = nhìn nhận một việc sau khi xảy ra thì dễ hơn là dự đoán tương lai -> không nên lo lắng về quá khứ hoặc đừng nên chỉ trích việc người khác đã làm.

Ví dụ
Hindsight is 20/20, so here’s the truth no Rutgers fan wants to hear, especially given how the month of September went for the Scarlet Knights.

But in a stunningly (cực kỳ) rare moment of contrition (hối hận), Musk expressed regret over the decision at his deposition (cách chức), part of a class-action shareholder suit that’s gained momentum (đà) in recent months. “At the time I thought it made strategic sense for Tesla and SolarCity to combine. Hindsight is 20-20,” Musk said. “If I could wind (quay lại) back the clock, you know, I would say [I] probably would have let SolarCity execute (hành quyết) by itself.”

This year's Construction Career Pathways Conference will cover an extensive (rộng) range of topics, including programs for every stage of learning, recruitment strategies, becoming an industry of choice, recognizing that hindsight is 20/20 and more. Attendees will gain insight (hiểu biết sâu sắc) from educators and industry professionals, hear from young craft professionals on why they chose construction and create an actionable (có thể triển khai được) outreach plan for 2020. "A powder keg" nghĩa là gì?

Tập trung vào đi ông, cháy bây giờ -.- Photo by: Alev Takil on Unsplash

"A powder keg" = thùng thuốc súng -> nghĩa là tình huống rất dễ thay đổi đột ngột và trở nên nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) said a patient had died in a Saskatoon emergency room due to overcrowding (quá tải bệnh nhân) and short staffing. "It's becoming a powder keg of a dangerous situation," said union president Tracy Zambory.

Frothy housing markets, high consumer debt loads and an explosion in alternative mortgage (thế chấp) lending are creating a powder keg that our 43rd Parliament would be wise to defuse. But as Canadians were reminded during this election campaign, our federal politicians are hardly a logical bunch.

Tooke’s one-dimensional characters help the plot (cốt truyện) along by stating only the very obvious (rõ ràng), like “If we lose, we lose the Pacific” and “This place is a powder keg.”

"Head out after (someone or something)" = Theo đuổi hoặc theo dấu ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Kendall and her crew head out after her dancers whip (quất) their ponytails (tóc cột kiểu đuôi ngựa) in front of the competition's faces.

Amy Schumer bundles up in a lustrous camel (lạc đà sáng bóng) overcoat as she and her husband Chris Fischer head out after Charlize Theron's fundraiser.

It may take a strong focus on ambiance (môi trường) and added experience-related features like live music, creative food menus, and more to convince some consumers to head out after dark. P.F. Chang's late-night concept also offers an incentive (khuyến khích, khích lệ) for diners already at the restaurant to stay longer and spend more.

"Head for tall timber" nghĩa là gì?

You faded away. Photo by  Tiko Giorgadze

"Head for tall timber" = Hướng về phía cây gỗ cao -> Phóng chạy và trốn đi.

Ví dụ
For two months, it seemed the Patriots were going to head for tall timber with the AFC's top seed and that everyone else was playing for No. 2.

Byrne also released a statement, saying: “From the Mueller investigation (cuộc điều tra) to this impeachment sham (giả mạo vụ tố cáo), President Trump has been under constant attack. I won’t sit back and watch them destroy our country. Alabama deserves a Senator who will stand with the President and won’t head for tall timber from the fight.”

Cliff’s AI really isn’t that smart, and you can get alongside him out of his line of sight quite easily by strafing (bắn phá, quở trách). When you’re faced with a group of his soldiers, just gun Cliff down as quickly as possible and ignore his army. Be warned that they’ll fade away (dần biến mất) but won’t quite stop shooting you, so when you see him disappear just head for tall timber.

"Head away from (someone or something)" = Hướng ra xa ai/cái gì -> Quay hoặc di chuyển ra xa ai hoặc điều gì.

Ví dụ
If you find yourself struggling (khó khăn) to find them, then you can always head away from the area and return in a bit to search for them some more.

Though note that you'll need to head away from the bright lights of cities and keep the phone steady to properly make use of astrophotography (phép chụp ảnh thiên văn).

Michelangelo produced an interesting and creative scene. A male, nude figure sits on a box that contains masks of different facial expressions (biểu cảm gương mặt). "Himalayan blunder" nghĩa là gì?

Sai quá sai. Photo courtesy: The White House

"Himalayan blunder" có từ "blunder" là sai lầm ngớ ngẩn -> sai lầm to lớn, nghiêm trọng.

Ví dụ
Apparently he lost his job because of a Himalayan blunder.

2004 was also its finest hour in Indian politics with the Left (Cánh Tả) parties combining to win as many as 60 seats and massively influencing central government policies. Four years later, the Left withdrew its support to the government on the issue of the Indo-US nuclear deal in what would prove to be yet another Himalayan blunder for the party.

It is inconceivable (không thể hiểu được) that someone like Modi, given his ideological (tư tưởng) grounding (kiến thức căn bản) and his political and diplomatic (ngoại giao) experience, would commit the Himalayan blunder of asking a loose cannon (người thất thường) like Trump to mediate (làm trung gian) between India and Pakistan. Forget Modi, not even a novice (người mới) in politics on the other side of the political spectrum (phân bố) would make this mistake. What is more likely is that when Modi met Trump in Osaka during the G20 summit, the issue of Pulwama and Balakot would have cropped up.

"High-handed" nghĩa là gì?

Chuẩn bị "ăn" nha! Photo courtesy: Stuart Leckenby

"High-handed" = cao tay -> người sử dụng quyền lực mà không quan tâm đến ý kiến của người khác; cậy quyền.

Ví dụ
Mr Brown said the planned charges (cáo buộc) were the last straw (cái cuối cùng) for customers already angry over banks' high-handed attitude.

Uganda has protested to Rwanda after two suspected smugglers (người buôn lậu) were shot dead near their common border, saying the response by Rwandan soldiers was high-handed (quá tay, nặng tay).

Talk about wild cards (nhân tố khó đoán): Bloomberg, a now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t Democrat, could have a significant impact on a party said to be lurching (lảo đảo) to the left, further dividing Democrats at a moment when they need to show unity (đoàn kết). Is this what an angry, suspicious (đáng ngờ) nation needs — another billionaire with a history of high-handed management (and allegations of crude (thô lỗ) statements about women) leveraging (tác động) his fortune to win the White House?

"Have a swelled head" nghĩa là gì?

Ta là chim Khổng Tước. Photo by  Vivek Doshi

"Have a swelled head" = Đầu phình ra -> Người kiêu căng, tự phụ và đề cao bản thân.

Ví dụ
To be sure, there are psychic payoffs (sự hoàn trả về mặt tinh thần, mang tính tâm linh). Alexander doesn't have a swelled head where entertainment is concerned, and freely acknowledges nobody rushes into a hospital yelling, "Is there an actor in the house?" He says he acts because it keeps him happy, like a kid on the playground.

As pictured, he also visited the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library. This workshop was geared toward younger children, in Grades 2 through 4. The library program was called The Magic Lie, based on his belief that writers are similar to both liars and magicians, creating words that seem real but aren’t. Part of his goal was to increase children’s confidence in their own ideas – or, as he put it, to “have a swelled head,” which he described as an admirable quality.

The Message Bible gives us that strong picture of love. 1 Corinthians 13:3-7 says, “So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt (phá sản, trắng tay) without love. Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for itself. Love does not want what it does not have. Love does not strut (vênh váo). Doesn’t have a swelled head. Doesn’t force itself on others, isn’t always “me first”. Doesn’t fly off at the handle. Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others. Doesn’t revel when others grovel (quỳ gối, phủ phục). Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth. Puts up with anything, trusts God always. Always looks for the best. Never looks back, but keeps going to the end.”

"Have a head for heights" nghĩa là gì?

Nằm ngước lên núi cao sao trông mình thật nhỏ bé. Photo by  Jez Timms

"Have a head for heights" = Có trí tuệ siêu đỉnh -> Người có tài trí và làm việc tốt; người có khả năng chịu đựng và không sợ độ cao.

Ví dụ
If you don't have a head for heights, you may want to look away now. A woman perches (đặt ở trên cao) high on a cliff (vách đá) looking out over a beautiful waterfall (thác nước).

Another unmissable (không thể quên được, không thể bỏ lỡ) piece of architecture is the Petronas Twin Towers. These twin towers are the tallest in the world, and you can even experience the view they offer for yourself during your visit. If you have a head for heights, you can visit the Sky Bridge, which is a walkway above the city, which connects the two towers.

What if you don’t have a head for heights? According to Jez, bouldering can help to conquer vertigo (chế ngự, chiến thắng sự chóng mặt) – particularly if you start with horizontal climbs. “The fact that there is no kit makes it less daunting,” he says. “There are no ropes (dây thừng) or harnesses (dụng cụ lao động, bộ yên cương) to trust; you know what you’re getting involved in.” Besides, a fear of heights can be due to conditioning rather than an actual phobia (sự ám ảnh, nỗi sợ hãi), he adds. “When children are left to their own devices, they often just go for it.”

"Have a sudden rush of blood to the head" = Tự nhiên muốn sôi máu lên não -> Bất chợt bị tác động mạnh tới cảm xúc hoặc quá kích động nên dẫn đến hành động dại dột và gây ra điều không mong muốn; vì phút bốc đồng nên sự việc thành ra như vậy.

Ví dụ
If you have a sudden rush of blood to the head and decided to make an impulse (sự bốc đồng, sự thôi thúc) buy, make sure to stay away from Floyd Mayweather’s apparel (quần áo, y phục) products.

“We find it very hard to get the South Pacific right: every few years we suddenly have a rush of blood to the head and decide we have to take the South Pacific seriously, then we forget about it.”

We'd all live in a comfortable retirement and would have one of the best education and health systems in the world. Sounds too good to be true. Well that's most certainly what New Zealand would have looked like if one highly paranoid (chứng bệnh hoang tưởng) man didn't have a rush of blood to the head in 1975.

"Have (one's) head screwed on (right)" = Đầu được vít chặt -> Người suy nghĩ rất thực tế và có óc phán đoán.

Ví dụ
Gary’s clearly been in and out of trouble in the past, but he’s got his head screwed on. He’s a really sweet guy, he seems very kind – and Sarah thinks he’s quite fit!

“It’s fairly insane to work for something and then have it happen very quickly and be confused about where you are at,” she says. “I definitely did have my head screwed on, which I’m grateful for.”

Sharing his thoughts on Rio, Kate's father enthused: 'He is great.
