"Sour stomach" nghĩa là gì?

Trông rất có thai nhưng lại là đầy bụng. Photo by Thiago Borges from Pexels

"Sour stomach" = dạ dày chua -> bệnh lý, gồm các triệu chứng như buồn nôn, ợ chua, khó tiêu, đầy hơi.

Ví dụ
Ranitidine (tên loại thuốc) is available as an over-the-counter (không kê đơn) and is used to treat heartburn (ợ nóng), acid indigestion (khó tiêu) and sour stomach.

From the time she was twenty-eight years old and returned from traveling for an extended period throughout Mexico, Diane V., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had suffered from sour stomach accompanied by heartburn and acid indigestion.

I've repeated this mantra (câu thần chú) to my patients thousands of times over the years: “An empty stomach is an acid stomach.” One of the surest ways to trigger (gây ra) a sour stomach bloating attack is to go way too long in between meals.

The recalls are part of an ongoing recall of ranitidine products, commonly used for treating and preventing ulcers (loét) in the stomach and intestines (ruột). The drugs are also used to treat acid reflux (trào ngược) and heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.

"Get out of a jam" nghĩa là gì?

'Get out of a jam' = thoát ra khỏi hoàn cảnh bế tắc.

Ví dụ
In other words, is Warren being straight with voters or simply trying to get out of a jam she created for herself when she hopped on Sanders’s Medicare-for-all bandwagon to protect her left flank?

Not only does Kelley earn her place by booking the signings and interviews, she’s also there with a chainsaw (cưa xích) at the ready when Ash needs to get out of a jam! Going back to the medieval thing, their exchange here is reminiscent (nhớ lại, gợi lại) of a knight and squire, which I dig.

Democrats (Đảng viên đảng Dân chủ) and the media presented Ambassador Gordon Sondland’s testimony (bằng chứng) Wednesday — that there was a quid pro quo in the Ukraine affair — as an anti-Trump “bombshell.” In truth, it was an “attention-grabbing and enormously clever gambit (bước đầu, thí quân) to get out of a jam,” argues the Washington Examiner’s Byron York.

The Maritotes argued that at restaurants in town, such as Fuller House and El Cine, patrons (khách quen) can have a kick in the wrist and leave without ever ordering anything to eat.

“Jimmy Hoffa was the cleanest man who ever lived. He never had a kick in the wrist in his life. He never had coffee in his life. He didn’t smoke cigarettes. He didn’t womanize (không quan hệ lăng nhăng với phụ nữ).” It goes on to add, “[Ragano] recalls a Saturday night in Chicago when Hoffa brought a group of high-living men to a soda shop for chocolate ice cream.”

Làm sao với được mặt trời? Photo by Aziz Acharki

"Kick in the guts" = Cú đá vào ruột/một cú chí mạng -> Một cú đá/sự đả kích nặng và trầm trọng tới thể xác hoặc tinh thần của ai (physically or mentally).

Ví dụ
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill wanted their new $290 million, 25,000 seat North Queensland Stadium to host the fixture, describing the NRL’s decision to pick Sunshine Coast as a “kick in the guts”.

Construction and demolition (sự phá hủy) waste producers face a potential levy (tiền thuế) of $20 per tonne (tấn). Canterbury Demolition director Lionel Green says that will be a kick in the guts for small companies like his.

"I think the law change the National Party put in place then, it was just a nasty gesture (hành vi dơ bẩn). It was nothing about reintegrating offenders or getting them ready for reintegration (tái hội nhập). It was just a nasty kick in the guts for them. So after the Supreme Court came out this year and said it's against the Bill of Rights and the Treaty, I thought Cabinet has to at least consider this. I took a paper to Cabinet and they agreed we should put the law back to the way it was before 2010 and that is what we are going to do," he says.

"Kick into the long grass" nghĩa là gì?

Anh, mình qua kia chụp hình nhé? Không, anh sợ rắn lắm! Photo by Scott Broome

"Kick (something) into the long grass" = đá (cái gì) vào bãi cỏ cao (-> khó tìm thấy hoặc không còn có thể để mắt đến) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là từ chối giải quyết một vấn đề ngay lập tức vì thường nó sẽ ảnh hưởng/gây rắc rối tới họ; trì hoãn trong việc đưa ra quyết định hoặc hành động.

Ví dụ
Inquiries (sự thẩm vấn) are what the Government does when it wants to kick something into the long grass.

There is talk that a Tory government would seek to establish a cross-party group to examine the issue - a classic way of kicking something awkward into the long grass.

The Conservatives have come under fire for kicking social care policy into the long grass over after it emerged a long-awaited overhaul (sự kiểm tra kỹ lưỡng) of vital care has been left out of the party's manifesto (bản tuyên ngôn).

"Have a kick to it" = Có một sự say mê với nó -> Có hương vị nồng cay hoặc gây kích thích; nồng độ cồn cao.

Ví dụ
“Hot Molly” did indeed have a kick to it but the pepper's lingering warmth proved to be a perfect compliment to the strong coffee and warm milk.

The Creole Shrimp taco is the only seafood (hải sản) option on the menu, and it features grilled shrimp, shaved cabbage, remoulade sauce and jalapeños. Be forewarned (cảnh báo trước), this dish does have a kick to it, but it’s worth it for the burst of flavor that accompanies the spice. The remoulade sauce is delicious. Consider ordering an extra side of it if you get the rice or salad bowls.

Despite the description listing ranch dressing as one of the ingredients (nguyên liệu), I didn’t detect (loại trừ) any ranch (nông trại) whatsoever. But I didn’t find that it was really needed. The chicken wasn’t dry at all, although the Buffalo sauce could be responsible for that. The sauce did have a kick to it, but it wasn’t unbearably spicy. The sticks of carrot and celery (cần tây) were a nice addition to balance out all of the chicken, which there was a lot of.

"Get (one's) kicks" = Có niềm vui -> Tìm niềm vui, thích thú và say mê với cái gì.

Ví dụ
I've learned to get it whenever I can and imminent (sắp xảy đến) new baby arrival has heightened my sense of urgency to get my kicks while I still can.

“Other people paint beautifully on canvas (bức vẽ) or write wonderful poetry,” he wrote in The Art of the Deal. “I like making deals, preferably big deals. That's how I get my kicks.”

I’m excited for the beta stage of 112 Operator. I’m even more excited for the final release! But for now, I’ll have to get my kicks out of playing 911 Operator, which I now have on PC and Nintendo Switch. Whilst it’s fun to play now, I eagerly await the future of the series in its next full installment. Everything is improved upon, and I’ll be there for it when it releases in full, in all its emergency management glory.

"Hit a sour note" hoặc "strike a sour note" có nghĩa là gặp phải tình huống hoặc điều gì xấu, không may, không vui vẻ gì. "Sour" hiểu theo nghĩa "tồi, kém".

The three-day music festival featured more than 130 bands on 10 stages stretching more than a mile from the Broadway Pier to the Bayfront Hilton. The event hit a sour note with some Coronado folks (nhóm người) on the other side of the bay.

Bill was being coy about his actual character, but he revealed not really being into Star Wars and that seemingly was how writer/showrunner Jon Favreau convinced him to take a role in the series, as his fans would get a kick out of him taking shots at Star Wars and then eventually being part of it.

Tennis all-time great, universally recognised nice guy, and sneakerhead, Roger Federer, has doubled down on his passion for kicks with his latest investment.

"Sour as vinegar" nghĩa là gì?

Khỏi nói cũng biết chua cỡ nào. Photo by Govinda Valbuena from Pexels

"Sour as vinegar" = chua như giấm. Nghĩa khác là xấu tính, (tính tình) khó chịu.

Ví dụ
Sometimes he turns up with bags of red or black cherries and green grapes sour as vinegar.

John Dooley found the people there “as sour as vinegar.” “They are opposed (chống đối) to us all along this [Monocacy] valley, and are or pretend to be fearful of punishment (sợ trừng phạt) from the Yankees.”

“Night crows (quạ đêm),” Adath said, “and she the queen of the crows. The king likes bright colors, bright words—she has no chance.” From the group of the Hebrew (Do Thái) wives came Yeshara's voice, words sour as vinegar.

The universal belief is, that all things which have become sour to the taste are converted into vinegar ; hence, if a glass of really pure Aiken wine is presented to a connoisseur (người sảnh sỏi) in the article, he will pronounce it not only as sour as vinegar, but he will venture to say that the glass contains more vinegar than wine.

"Drag (one) kicking and screaming" = Kéo ai vừa đá vừa la hét -> Bắt ai tới một nơi khác hoặc bắt họ thay đổi mặc dù họ không muốn làm điều đó.

Ví dụ
“If you and I are making a deal, and you have to drag me kicking and screaming the whole way, what are the odds (sự thách thức) the deal is going to hold?

A whole day to celebrate being a postdoc? To my jaded postdoc sensibilities, the 10th annual Postdoctoral Research Day, themed “Transcending Boundaries” and featuring speed networking and a “Gong Show”, seemed guaranteed to drag me, kicking and screaming, out of my comfort zone.

Elizabeth Warren is on the way to securing the Democrat nomination (sự đề cử), and the ensuing general election battle will be a re-run of Little Bighorn except, ironically, Sitting Bolshevik will be Custer. Trump’s going to drag her kicking and screaming and nagging (cằn nhằn, rầy la), always nagging, down the trail of tears until that glorious November night when Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and maybe Minnesota all express their reservations over sending this tiresome scold to the White Wigwam in Washington.

"Go sour" nghĩa là gì?

At least these deals involve factories, machinery, or real estate (bất động sản), which you can claw back if loans go sour. What kind of collateral (vật thế chấp) can WeWork provide? Pretty decorations from their leased (thuê mướn) properties?

In the film’s first 10 minutes, director (đạo diễn) Melina Matsoukas (“Insecure,” director of Beyoncé’s “Formation” video) delivers a frustrating and frightening scene that’s probably all too familiar to some as you watch a routine police stop go sour quickly.

"A kick in the butt" nghĩa là gì?

Quay mông đây để ta đá cho tỉnh nào. Photo by  Nsey Benajah

"A kick in the butt" = Cú đá vào mông -> Một hành động/cử chỉ có ý tốt đẹp để tạo động lực cho người nhận cú đá đó (người tiếp nhận, lĩnh hội).

Ví dụ
Those are the people who will encourage you, brainstorm (động não) with you, listen to you, and give you a kick in the butt when you need one.

“He’s our leader,” Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler said. “We understand sometimes we need a kick in the butt, and he’s the guy who can provide that. On any given night, you know he’s going to come out and compete. Even if he’s not on the score sheet, he’s working, he’s killing penalties, he’s playing physical. He’s a guy we look to when times get tough.”

Bouncing back after a relationship ends is rarely instantaneous (tức thời). It's tempting to wallow in self-pity (tủi thân) or pine after your ex, even if the relationship ended for a good reason. Laughing helps, spending time with friends helps, but sometimes, a kick in the butt is what you need more than anything. Plenty of people have survived breakups, and — believe it or not — you will, too. If you need a little help picking yourself up and moving on from your ex, these inspiring breakup movies are sure to do the trick.

"A kick at the can" nghĩa là gì?

"A kick at the can" = Một cú đá trúng hộp -> Một cơ hội để làm, cố gắng và đạt được điều nào đó.

Ví dụ
I guess the frustration (nản lòng, thất vọng) is, how many times can a development come back, virtually very similar, to keep trying to get a kick at the can?”.

“Sometimes it’s just not good enough,” Lamont said after the incumbent (người có phận sự, bề trên) Progressive Conservatives were handed a second successive majority mandate (ủy nhiệm). “I think over the next few years, I don’t think things will get much better under the PCs, so I think there will be another opportunity to take a kick at the can soon enough.”

Yeah. Now, after making the playoffs, getting a taste of it, I can't imagine not making them again. You don't realize what you've been missing out on until you've been there. We did get there in 2013-14, lost to Minnesota in Game 7 at home. And then you always expect you're going to be there and get a kick at the can every time, but you realize pretty fast that it's not like that, that it's pretty hard making it. It's not a guarantee (sự bảo đảm). You gotta earn it. And that's what you're trying to do.

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade" nghĩa là gì?

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade" = Khi cuộc đời cho bạn một quả chanh, hãy tìm cách để pha một cốc nước chanh -> biến cái không may mắn trong đời thành cái hay, cái đẹp, đừng than vãn.

Ví dụ
They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and that’s how new Freo Docker Hayden Young became accomplished at kicking on both sides of his body.

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” they say, but it’s not always easy to escape our hardships (thử thách cam go) or mold every sticky situation into a positive, palatable (dễ chịu) form.

"We love trekking into the forest and our ‘picnic’ basket is usually filled with fruits, nuts and water. We throw in a lemon or two, because when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade,” laughs Tulsi Naik, F&B manager, Novotel Hyderabad Airport

"If life gives you lemons — like, your personality, for example," he continued, self-deprecatingly (tự ti), "you should first make lemonade. Then, make sure no other companies can produce or distribute their own soft drinks. So the only game in town is lemonade."

"Lemon Law" nghĩa là gì?

Hiện "Luật Quả Chanh" đã được áp dụng ở nhiều nước tiên tiến trên thế giới. Photo by JESHOOTS.com from Pexels

"Lemon Law" = Luật Quả Chanh-> một luật của Mỹ bảo vệ những người mua phải xe ô tô hoặc những sản phẩm bị lỗi, cho phép sửa chữa, đổi trả, hoàn phí. "Lemon" ở đây ý chỉ những chiếc xe hay hỏng hóc, xe cũ... Thêm một điều thú vị là “Luật Quả Chanh” đã từng được đề cập trong phim "How I met your Mother" (xem ví dụ).

Ví dụ
Introduced in the year 2012, the Lemon Law was designed to help safeguard the interest of consumers.

Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection (Cục bảo vệ người tiêu dùng) said 2019 has already been a record-breaking year for the number of Lemon Law Program cases it’s processed, and expects to surpass last year’s record for the amount of money recovered.

The Lemon Law was first introduced in How I Met Your Mother season 1, and it's based on lemon laws created to protect purchasers from buying defective used cars. Barney came up with the idea to protect the dating world. The dating Lemon Law gave each person five minutes to decide if there will be a second date. In those minutes, they had the chance to call off the date for any reason, avoiding any bad dates.

"The answer's a lemon" = câu trả lời là quả chanh -> kết quả, đáp án không như kỳ vọng. "Lemon" ở đây được hiểu là điều gì đó không tốt, không đạt yêu cầu, gây thất vọng (như trong máy đánh bạc biểu tượng hình trái cây, quả chanh có giá trị thấp nhất).

Ví dụ
We will definitely miss this service. I do question whether any significant cost savings (tiết kiệm chi phí) can be squeezed out by squashing services further — though I suppose the answer’s a lemon.

Abbott, in all his actions in both public and private arenas, has been shown to be a man of substance (người có sức ảnh hưởng) , reliability and good reputation. Put two and two together, Bill Ogilvie? The answer's a lemon.

The moment that that proposal (đề xuất) is made, I know that the first answer will be: 'But the quality of the stone is not suitable for our business at all.' But the answer is a lemon. Of course, it is not the ideal stone for this purpose.

The reason that I love Trondheim is that when I try an idea on with the orchestra (ban nhạc), the members are not afraid of making unconventional (trái với thông lệ) sounds.

The central bank cannot take any action against the banks unilaterally (đơn phương, một bên) but can try a plan on with the state government which has the ultimate authority to decide if the bank should continue operations or be shut down (ngưng hoạt động).

Ví dụ
“I was waiting to be told I’d be going back to Townsville but Mal says ‘go and catch up with the boys and I will try to catch you later’.

"I will try to catch you later, OK?" Hannah tells him... only for Luke to try to interrupt (gián đoạn, phá đám) her time with another man.

Ví dụ
"I'm in no position to give you a quote on it," said Rick Engler, a new spokesperson for the theatre. "You can try me back in a few months. Maybe I'll know more then."

Diane Marie Mast, who represented herself in the lawsuit (bộ luật), did not immediately try her back Easton home seeking comment Monday afternoon. "Try (one's) damnedest" = Làm hết sức lực của mình, cố gắng hết khả năng.

Ví dụ
He is coaching at one of Brisbane's premier rugby (bóng bầu dục) schools and, he says, try his damnedest to locate the heir to Wallabies No.10 Bernard Foley.

“Try your damnedest not to do anything to embarrass (ngăn trở, làm bối rối) that, not to do anything that would upset that brand, because it doesn’t take but one to do it,” Ross said. “Please uphold yourself in the most utmost professional way that you can.”

Dern’s performance is informed by her passion for the subject matter. She feels very strongly about exonerating (giải tội, miễn cho) innocent Death Row inmates (bạn chung tù), just as Gilbert did. Seeing her as Gilbert try her damnedest to save Todd from death is a heartbreaking yet inspiring process. It’s also incredibly fascinating to witness the bond that a metalhead alcoholic and an upper-middle-class playwright (nhà viết kịch) form through empathy (đồng cảm) and compassion (lòng thương xót, trắc ẩn).

"Try (one's) wings (out)" = Thử dang đôi cánh -> Thử dùng kỹ năng hoặc điều mình mới học vào thực tế; thử làm điều gì mới để xem mình có thể may mắn không.

Ví dụ
Try your wings, Josh! You will not grow new muscles (cơ bắp, sức mạnh) by tolerating bad behavior, keeping quiet and cursing (chửi rủa) Bart under your breath.

Your first goals as a new consultant (người cố vấn, tư vấn) are to try your wings, build your confidence and establish your credibility (sự tín nhiệm, đáng tin cậy). Your initial clients will be happy to let other people know about your work.
