"Ain't got a lick of sense" nghĩa là gì?

Ừm... Có gì buồn cười ở đây à? Photo by graham wizardo from Pexels

"Ain't got a lick/grain of sense" có nghĩa là không có khiếu hài hước, lại ngốc nghếch.

Ví dụ
“I wonder where he is now,” Turner said. “That nigger didn’t have a lick of sense. Making things worse for himself, probably, wherever he is.”

These men from McKinsey -- and they are mostly men, and mostly white -- are indeed bright. Even so, several more prosaic (tầm thường, không sáng tạo) questions still bear asking: Do they have a lick of sense? Are they any better than the competition? Can you trust them?

"The world has gone out of its mind except for me and you," Nelson sings, seemingly referencing the increasingly confusing times we're living in. He makes a nod (tán thành) to "sitting on the fence" (không theo phe nào) and comments on his inability to relate to an old friend who "ain't got a lick of sense."

"Lose the thread" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ con cừu bị lạc loài. Photo by Felix

"Lose the thread" = Mất sợi dây liên lạc, mất dòng/đoạn câu chuyện -> Không thể theo kịp điều ai đang nói hoặc không nhớ điều mình muốn nói tiếp theo.

Ví dụ
The minute that you lose momentum (đà), you lose the thread. You become extremely vulnerable to distraction.

The crowd seemed to lose the thread, as they did during a longer riff about the perils (hiểm họa) and problems of windmills (cối xay gió), long a Trump target.

Sticking to the story means you get vital equipment quicker, as well as keeping the plot (cốt truyện) together and easier to follow - if you spend 20 hours between cutscenes delivering underpants for random characters it’s easy to lose the thread of what’s going on.

"Lose a packet" nghĩa là gì?

Gặp bài khó rồi đây. Photo by Alessandro Bogliari

"Lose a packet" = Mất một món tiền đánh cuộc/thua cuộc -> Mất rất nhiều tiền cùng một lúc.

Ví dụ
Doorway capital are going to lose a packet here. Those saying SM was badly managed before well half the management are the same.

Those chasing such stocks (cổ phiếu) rarely do well long-term, and though they might have a few big successes, I’ve heard of too many who went on to lose a packet backing the wrong growth prospect at the wrong time.

A network ideally should never lose a packet. But that’s just an ideal condition which never occurs in the real world. Packet loss is an issue that plagues (gây tai họa, khó khăn) almost every ISP. And from my experience, I can easily say that this issue is commonly faced by wireless connections in comparison to that of wired ones.

"Lose my footing" nghĩa là gì?

Vẫn cứ yêu đời, vẫn cứ bay nhảy suốt ngày. Photo by Anthony Ginsbrook

"Lose (one's) footing" = Mất chân trụ, bệ đứng -> Bị trượt chân, té hoặc ngã khi đang thực hiện hoạt động như múa nhảy, đi đứng hoặc leo trèo.

Ví dụ
Caprice also practiced a few solo moves during her training session and at one point grimaced (nhăn nhó) in horror as she appeared to lose her footing.

Careful! At one point, the TV star looked taken aback as she made her way down the steep steps, perhaps concentrating not to lose her footing.

For me, it was crippling (méo mó, biến dạng). I would lose my footing, my self-identity. Because I struggle with bipolar [disorder] (rối loạn cảm xúc lưỡng cực), my emotions are ready to be pulled one way or the other — when I was untreated, as I was then — and I would either react very angrily to the invasion (xâm nhập, xâm phạm) to my privacy (which is exactly what, of course, the paparazzi (thợ săn ảnh) want, because then they can show you as an angry person, not just nice) or I'd get very sad that I was being picked on, or centered, when I really didn't want to be. I didn't choose that life myself — it was my husband's life.

"Lose (one's) buttons" = Mất cái nút -> Trở nên đần độn, kém thông minh và kém cỏi.

Ví dụ
“We may close the Credit Account and demand repayment of the full amount you owe us if you die or lose your buttons.”

They become bankrupt (phá sản) or make any arrangement or composition with their creditors generally or they their buttons.

Another rule states a person ceases (ngừng) to be a member of Globalheart if they lose their buttons within the meaning of the Mental Health.

"A lick of paint" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jarno van Loon from Pexels

"A (new) lick of paint" = vệt sơn mới -> tân trang vẻ ngoài, ngoại hình của cái gì.

Ví dụ
Sharing before and after photos on the Mrs Hinch Made Me Do It Facebook group, Shraiden Leesha explained it cost her nothing to upcycle (nâng cấp, tái chế đồ vật), using just wallpaper and a lick of paint.

Badly fitting, cracked (bị nứt) and weather-worn (bào mòn bởi thời tiết) doors are a source of heat loss (thoát nhiệt). “Fill them in with woodfiller (trám trét gỗ) and freshen up with a lick of paint,” says Allan Reid, the director of Art Windows & Doors in Glasgow.

Banbury Bowl acting manager (chỉ đạo diễn xuất), Becky Arnold, said: "We've done all new lighting, given it a lick of paint, removed all the old bowling chair furniture and put the booths in, so it has been quite an interesting process because every time you walk in the building something new was here or something had changed."

"It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye" nghĩa là gì?

Trẻ không chơi, già hối hận. Photo by  𝕷𝖚𝖈𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye" = Đến khi mất một bên mắt rồi thì trò chơi cũng hết vui -> Một sự cảnh cáo về sự nguy hiểm của một trò chơi nào đó (cảnh báo cho trẻ em và người lớn).

Ví dụ
Her fans were surprised, too. One commenter shared, "I jumped." Another fan added, "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.".

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Or, in reality, a client, an analyst’s support (sự hỗ trợ của phân tích viên), or your credibility (sự tín nhiệm, độ tin cậy) from getting your social media account hacked. And then, HR calls you about your social media governance.

While Falliam were back in their love nest, Evan was stranded alone. Moreover, it was a public embarrassment (ngại, mất mặt) for him and he seems to be on a quest for revenge (trả thù). He took a sample of Fallon's hair from the drawer and there's no clue what he could do with it. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye (or hair, maybe)! Directed by Matt Earl Beesley and written by Kevin A. Garnett, the episode was packed with suspense and thrill all along.

"You must lose a fly to catch a trout" nghĩa là gì?

Cuối cùng cũng tóm được mi. Photo by Mael BALLAND

"You must lose a fly to catch a trout" = Bạn phải hy sinh con ruồi để bắt được cá hồi -> Bạn phải hy sinh điều gì đó để có được điều mình muốn (ý là cái mà bạn hy sinh thì nó rất nhỏ bé/chẳng là gì so với mục tiêu bạn sẽ đạt).

Ví dụ
I have to buy my house for my daughter studying abroad (du học) and I know that "You must lose a fly to catch a trout".

Sorry, man! I need to break it so that I can open my door more easily. You know "You must lose a fly to catch a trout"?

We can't stand our distance relationship (yêu xa) anymore because I have to finish my MBA in Australia, so I decided to break up with her and I know that I hurt her a lot but "You must lose a fly to catch a trout".

"Finger licking good" nghĩa là gì?

Thơm ngon đến giọt cuối cùng. Photo by bruce mars from Pexels

"Finger lickin' good" = vị ngon trên từng ngón tay -> rất ngon, rất tốt.

Ví dụ
While KFC Canada added: "That was finger-lickin' good while it lasted. Our Plant-Based Fried Chicken by Lightlife Foods is sold out, but stay tuned (dõi theo) for its return."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the albums aren’t available on streaming sites (trang web nghe nhạc)), but some kind soul has uploaded them to YouTube — and while they might not be finger-lickin’ good, they’re not too shabby (tồi, xoàng) either.

By the time you read this, KFC's supply of 11 Herbs & Spices firelogs (loại gỗ đốt lò sưởi) may be gone, if this holiday season is anything like last year when the finger-lickin' good firelogs (loại có mùi gà rán) sold out in just three hours, a news release said.

"Win or lose" nghĩa là gì?

Thắng thua không quan trọng, quan trọng là cố gắng hết mình. Photo by  Quino Al

"Win or lose" = Không liên quan đến việc thắng hoặc thua; dù thắng hay thua thì...

Ví dụ
Anthony Joshua has dismissed (loại bỏ) any suggestions that he will retire from boxing win or lose after his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr on Saturday, insisting he has not yet reached the end of the 15-year “sentence” he gave himself when first taking up the sport.

Yet the answer could be less bleak for the party, and for the country, than you think. Whether Labour loses or wins, in this campaign it has begun to set out a new, potent notion (quan điểm có hiệu lực) about how politics should be done and what elected politicians can achieve.

Frankly, it’d be more of a disservice (sự chơi khăm) to college football fans to leave the one-loss LSU Tigers out of the CFP than it would be to put Oklahoma, Baylor or Utah out if they win their conference title game. If you want the best four teams in the country having a shot at making the National Championship Game, then the Tigers have to be a part of the mix, win or lose against Georgia.

"Common as an old shoe" nghĩa là gì?

Hòa mình với thiên nhiên Photo by Javon Swaby from Pexels

'common as an old shoe' = tầm thường như đôi giày cũ -> cư xử thiếu văn minh, vụng về, dung tục; dân dã.

Ví dụ
“George's like the rest of us, he's as common as an old shoe, but he likes to hobnob (đàn đúm) with the big people, so that's great.”

Entrepreneurs who claim they’ve got the next money-making concept are about as common as an old shoe. But a surplus of old shoes is exactly what one Chicago startup is hoping for.

"They're as common as an old shoe," said Betty Balsley, who got to know the Walker family while the now-governor's father was serving as a pastor (cố vấn tinh thần, mục sư) in Plainfield, Iowa.

"Faith was the lens through which he looked at life, family and friends who were the joy of his life," said Fr. Michael Ryan, a longtime family friend, who celebrated the Mass. "He was a modest man in every way, unpretentious (khiêm tốn) and common as an old shoe. The only accolades Rhoady was ever comfortable with were the ones he gave to others.

"Use it or lose it" nghĩa là gì?

Sống xanh. Photo by Brian Yurasits

"Use it or lose it" = Dùng đi không là mất đó -> Nếu không thực hiện điều gì hoặc không tận dụng cái gì thì bạn sẽ mất nó.

Ví dụ
A community farm on Portland has issued a ‘use it or lose it’ appeal (thỉnh cầu) to the public as it struggles to make ends meet (trang trải cuộc sống).

The team from Dublin City University (DCU) found the old axiom (chân lý, châm ngôn) "use it or lose it" holds true for the over-65s when it comes to exercise.

As the protests rage (sự ác liệt, cơn thịnh nộ của những người biểu tình) on in Hong Kong, airlines are being given the green light to cut winter flights by as much as they need thanks to a revision (duyệt lại, xét lại) to the airport’s policy. With passenger numbers decreasing month on month, airlines have already started trimming (sắp đặt, thu gọn) their routes and capacity to avoid flying half-empty aircraft. Now, they needn’t worry about losing their slots as a result, as the ‘use it or lose its criteria (tiêu chí) has been suspended until the end of the winter season.

"Lose the plot" nghĩa là gì?

Khó xác định. Photo by  Karen Zhao

"Lose the plot" = Mất mưu trí -> Hành động một cách lộn xộn, thiếu tổ chức và mất lý trí; không hiểu chuyện gì đang diễn ra xung quanh mình.

Ví dụ
They start off wanting to do the right projects, but, eventually, lose the plot. I didn't judge Zarina. If she is seduced by evil, then so be it.

There were several pull factors — affordability (tính kinh tế), safety and timeliness. But then, a combination of factors set in — the NRZ became unreliable, it was dogged by a string of horrendous accidents (tai nạn khủng khiếp), and finally it seemed to lose the plot.

Simply whenever you thought Mr Fowler couldn’t get any extra off the rails comes rumours he’s set to lose the plot and go rogue (đểu, ranh) with a gun – and presumably take Linda hostage (bắt làm con tin). James Bye and Kellie Shiny have been noticed filming dramatic scenes on location, with a battered and bruised Martin manhandling a terrified-looking Linda whereas waving a hearth arm round. ‘Enders haven’t commented, however with Martin sliding into the darkish facet due to his vendetta (mối thù truyền kiếp) with Ben Mitchell, and being dumped by spouse Stacey, the stall-holder is a unstable mess able to blow up any day now.

"The common touch" nghĩa là gì?

Tinh thần bốn bể là anh em, cười lên cái Photo by Wilson Vitorino from Pexels

'the common touch' khả năng của những người có địa vị cao, có quyền lực xử sự và tiếp xúc với những người bình thường một cách thân mật, chan hòa.

Ví dụ
Rees-Mogg’s Grenfell remarks prove (chứng tỏ) Tories lack the common touch.

"In her letter to Ivy Woodward it is clear Diana wrote from the heart, like one mother to another,” said Sarah Ward, of Lawrences Auctioneers. “The common touch that she had with normal people is here to see.”

Butland adds, “If you’re a royal having to learn the common touch, is that more difficult than being a commoner having to learn the royal touch? She is so natural when I see her with children and families. This is not someone struggling to stay in character. That is her character.”

Alas, the common touch deserted the boss when she tweeted a photo of herself travelling to Cardiff for the BBC debate, with the sign for a first class carriage over her head. Remarkably, within nine minutes the image had been withdrawn, cropped, and republished with the words “first class” no longer visible.

- tin chứ, tao đang cảm thấy một bộ phận bắt đầu cứng lại đây này.

"Wine and dine" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Douglas Lopez on Unsplash

"Wine and dine" = ăn uống rượu thịt, hầu rượu -> nghĩa là thết đãi/ khoản đãi ai nhằm được hưởng ân huệ/ưu đãi từ họ, cá nhân hoặc công việc.

Ví dụ
Who's paying for lunch? Here's exactly how drug companies wine and dine our doctors. Just look at the opioid epidemic (lan truyền bệnh) in the United States. Onestudyfound the amount of marketing, including payments to doctors, was associated with small but significant increases in both prescriptions and deaths from overdose (quá liều).

Teams use lavish (quá nhiều) ‘motorhomes‘, some of them glass fronted palaces that run to three tiers and are a long way from the original mobile homes, as their paddock headquarters and to wine and dine VIP guests.

On November 29th, the Almonte Civitan Club is having a special wine and dine fundraiser (người góp vốn) to help purchase a TrioBike Taxi that will be donated (biếu) to Carebridge Community Support.

"Lose reason" nghĩa là gì?

Khi màn đêm buông xuống. Photo by  Ali Jouyandeh

"Lose reason" = Mất lý trí -> Không còn khả năng suy nghĩ hợp lý và logic, thường là do sự tức giận.

Ví dụ
When we lose touch with the importance of our lives, including our role as parent, employee, or partner, we lose reason to push on.

“My sorrow (sự đau khổ) will not lower my spirits, my anger will not cause me to lose reason, being under surveillance (sự giám sát, theo dõi cẩn thận) will not intimidate (hăm dọa) me into surrendering (đầu hàng, từ bỏ),” Zhang wrote.

It’s easy to lose reason when you are all goggle-eyed (lồi mắt) with love in a new relationship and it’s natural that you would want to have as much of your man as possible whether in public in private. However, witnessing PDA can be very awkward (kì cục) for the onlooker (người xem). So if your boyfriend gently nudges (nhích bằng khuỷu tay) you away when you snuggle (xích gần) into him in the metro, it could simply be because he is more aware of what’s appropriate.

"Find common ground" nghĩa là gì?

Đồng nghiệp là phải thương yêu nhau nghen :) Photo by fauxels

'Find common ground' = tìm được điểm chung, lý lẽ chung (từ 'ground' dùng với nghĩa lý lẽ, lý do, nguyên cớ).

Ví dụ
One forum is to be held this weekend by professionals and academics, who call themselves the Hong Kong Forward Alliance, to find common ground and ways forward. I applaud (hoan nghênh, tán dương) their efforts and wish them every success.

The premiers of B.C. and Alberta appeared to find common ground in their otherwise tense relationship Monday, uniting (cùng hành động, đoàn kết) behind the idea of exporting more liquefied natural gas to Asia and taking pollution credits for weaning countries off of dirtier coal.

"Whether you're black or white, Republican or Democrat, whatever it might be, find a way to find common ground. Give it a chance to work, and if it doesn't, be a future friend. That's my slogan," Isakson said. "... Friends and future friends is what it's all about ... life is a win-win proposition if you'll do it ... but you have to command it no matter what side of the transition you're on."
