"Be bitter and twisted" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Soumil Kumar from Pexels

"Be bitter and twisted" = đắng và xoắn -> đau khổ, buồn bã vì những tổn thương, ám ảnh trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ
I've heard a few grumblings (càu nhàu) from bitter and twisted old folk longing for a grittier (cứng cỏi hơn) take but this is as good as anything we could have hoped for from Disney.

It felt like the first time Taylor had read the room wrong, opening the floodgates (tháo cũi xổ lồng) for a litany (kinh cầu nguyện) of criticism that would eventually crest (trèo lên) with another run in with Kanye ahead of her bitter and twisted Reputation album.

[People engage in online abuse (bạo hành mạng)] because they're so bitter and twisted because of the fact that they're doing nothing with their own lives they think that it's okay to go online and say these dirty type of things and use bad language and be horrible quite simply because they've nothing better to do.

"Get your knickers in a twist" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Pixabay from Pexels

"Get (one's) knickers in a twist" = xoắn cái quần lót -> có nghĩa là nổi cơn tam bành, giận điên lên (vì chuyện không đâu). "Knickers" là quần lót chẽn gối (của phụ nữ). Cụm từ này xuất hiện ở Anh, trong Anh-Mỹ có cụm tương tự là "get/have your panties in a knot".

Ví dụ
They also have these cheeky (táo bạo) cherry cotton briefs that come in a pack of five for just €5, so no need to get your knickers in a twist.

OK, it’s a bit expensive and a bit woo-woo (viễn tưởng), but I don’t see why you’re getting your knickers in a twist. That’s because I haven’t told you who’s selling it.

After all, narrow-minded (đầu óc hạn hẹp) keyboard warriors have recently managed to get their knickers in a twist over such “oh-so shocking” shifts as Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid (Nàng Tiên Cá) being played by an African American.

The Bushtucker trials (thử nghiệm) are the main event, what the crowds are screaming for, what we are all tuning in to see! It’s like going on Great British Bake Off and getting your knickers in a twist if they ask you to make a cake! It’s crazy! That’s what you are there to do!

“Get a grip” nghĩa là gì?

Tĩnh tâm, không màng sự đời. Photo by Felipe Borges from Pexels

“Get a grip” có nghĩa là bình tĩnh, cố gắng kiểm soát cảm xúc của bản thân. Khi bạn nắm giữ (grip) một thứ gì đó, bạn có khả năng hoàn toàn kiểm soát được mình. “Get a grip of” còn có thể là hiểu hơn về một điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
Tommy soon tried to get a grip on the proceedings, as the laughter continued for quite some time.

Eventually, the seasoned stars got a grip on themselves, but giggles (cười khúc khích) continued until they went to their next video package.

I call on both Likud and Blue and White to get a grip and understand that the people do not want more elections (bầu cử). They have had enough of elections.

Get a grip! The very entitled people (người có quyền) who need a reality check - including a couple who complained their food was taking too long while a customer was having a heart attack.

"Take a drubbing" = Nhận một trận đòn đau, sự đánh bại không còn manh giáp -> Thất bại hoàn toàn; thua thảm bại; bị chỉ trích hay quở trách nặng.

Ví dụ
From the early metrics onward (tiến về phía trước), it was pretty obvious that ratings for Game 1 of the 2019 NBA Finals were going to take a drubbing.

I made this bet before Clemson came in at number five overall and now I feel like NC State may be set up to take a drubbing so Clemson can prove they deserve (xứng đáng) to be in the top four.

The Trump administration is battling with California over auto emissions (sự phát ra, bốc ra) and fuel economy regulations. If the White House is successful, EV sales growth could take a drubbing. California has been allowed to require tougher emissions standards than the federal government’s, and other states have been allowed to follow California’s lead.

"Come out swinging" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by gleb krasnoborov from Pexels

"Come out swinging/ fighting" có nghĩa là cạnh tranh, đối đầu với ai (trên tinh thần đam mê, nhiệt huyết). Cụm từ được dùng trong giới quyền Anh khi một võ sĩ đưa nắm đấm lên để tấn công đối thủ của anh ta. "Swing" nghĩa là dùng tay để tấn công người khác.

Ví dụ
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has urged (thôi thúc) his players to 'come out fighting' in order to arrest a slump (đình trệ) in form which has seen them win only one of their last nine Premier League games.

Prime Minister Antti Rinne (SDP) has come out swinging in a political fight (cuộc chiến chính trị) against one of the parties in his own government coalition (liên hiệp chính phủ) – and given the Centre Party an ultimatum (tối hậu thư) on his own future.

No one really expected that Netanyahu, after receiving the news of the indictment (truy tố), would face the nation and say he would step down. That is simply not the Netanyahu way. But his decision to come out swinging is a fateful one whose consequences (hậu quả) will be borne (phải gánh chịu) by us all.

"Swing for the fences" nghĩa là gì?

Chiến đấu hết mình vì người hâm mộ. Photo by David Morris from Pexels

"Swing for the fences/bleachers" có từ "fence" là hàng rào, hoặc "bleachers" là hàng ghế khán đài. "Swing" trong bóng chày là một cú xoay người thật mạnh để đánh bóng. Nghĩa bóng của cụm từ này là nỗ lực hết sức có thể để hướng tới mục tiêu.

Ví dụ
Las Vegas Ballpark will host Dinger Derby on Dec. 14 and 15, during which local fans will be allowed to swing for the fences and win season tickets.

"Well, Bob Myers -- it depends if he's ready to swing for the fences, because LaMelo Ball is that swing-for-the-fences pick," he said. "Somebody's going to be brave enough to do it."

Our proposed (đề xuất) approach has three components (thành phần). First, scale up public spending (chi tiêu công) on science — emphasizing (đề cao) the need to swing for the fences.

So it would be surprising if the second-year GM doesn’t again swing for the fences, with the winter meetings set to officially begin Monday. There is no guarantee (đảm bảo) Van Wagenen will be successful in his pursuit (mưu cầu), but industry insiders at least expect him to try.

I know who holds my future. Photo by Andrew Neel

"Take a dim view of (someone or something)" = Bi quan về cái gì, đưa ra ý kiến mập mờ/không rõ ràng -> Không có vẻ thích thú với cái gì, không đồng tình với ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Each is seeking a second term next year, and voters take a dim view of candidates looking past the election in front of them to the next race.

The shares could have a high yield (sinh lời cao) because the share price has fallen, as investors take a dim view of the future prospects of the company.

“Now, investors take a dim view of that. They want a return (lợi nhuận) on their equity (tính công bằng), and that means cash liquidity (khả năng thanh toán bằng tiền mặt). They want to see that, the same as they are getting it in other industries."

"Swing the balance" nghĩa là gì?

"Swing the balance" = xoay chuyển thế cân bằng -> yếu tố, nhân tố thúc đẩy, tác động lên kết quả của điều gì.

Ví dụ
Other people step up as her father, her fiancé, her counsellor, her university professor and so on. Here is where audience participation can swing the balance.

Huddersfield tend to play quite direct from defence (hàng phòng ngự) and duels in the air could help to swing the balance of play in their favour if Leeds don’t get a grip of that (không hiểu).

“It is clear there are many things wrong with this national pastime (tiêu khiển) of ours, whatever the general benefits we might derive from it as participants and fans,” a paper by three Atlantic Canada academics said in 2013. “Many changes are needed to swing the balance... Whether this will actually take place in the near or distant future is difficult to say.”

"Take a dig at (someone or something)" = Đào bới, moi cái gì ra -> Chỉ trích hay sỉ nhục ai/cái gì hà khắc.

Ví dụ
ROGER FEDERER appeared to take a dig at his rivals (địch thủ) for "changing their wife" every year because they are "distracted".

In comments on fellow Bachelor alum Jessica Brody's Instagram post on November 23, 2019, Chelsie seemed to take a dig at her ex.

Responding to the big news, Amber was quick to take a dig at her former love interest posting a snap on her story about cutting negative people out of your life.

"Swing shift " nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Lily Banse on Unsplash

"Swing shift" nghĩa là ca đêm, ca làm quay vòng, làm việc từ tầm chiều tối đến nửa đêm (thường là từ 3 giờ chiều đến 12h đêm).

Ví dụ
The officers of the squad liked the name, as a tiger is known to hunt and move silently under the cover of darkness, and this squad worked the 10-hour swing shift from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Soon, Villalobos started a family and his parents encouraged him to get a job within the Ysleta Independent School District. In 2004, Villalobos landed one as a swing-shift custodian (quản lý) at Eastwood Heights Elementary School.

Any occupation that puts the body at odds with the circadian rhythm’s (nhịp đồng hồ sinh học) use of the light/dark pattern of the Sun is at higher risk for injury or accident. Truck drivers, physicians and other medical personnel (nhân viên y tế), night and swing shift workers, for example, are more likely to be on the road late at night or early in the morning when most drowsy (ngủ gật) driving accidents take place.

"Take a crack at (something)" = Quất một roi/làm rạn nứt cái gì -> Thử cố gắng để làm điều gì.

Ví dụ
Arnott's press release says just 50 boxes were delivered to “the lucky few”, and that we were to take a crack at sussing (phát hiện ra, điều tra kỹ) what the flavours were.

After making golden debut (lần ra mắt công chúng đầu tiên) in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, Nathalie Rose Uy said she would continue training and take a crack at qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Over the weekend I successfully got a wizard (phù thủy, pháp thuật) to invent the internet, thanks to spotting Robert Yang’s attempts to make an AI gay. We’ve both been mucking (chế giễu) about with AI Dungeon 2, a text adventure game that will take a crack at responding to anything you type. It’s built using OpenAI’s GPT-2, a text generator they trained by reading the internet – the one they’ve refused to share their full research on, they claim in case people abuse it to create fake news.

Ván bài cuối cùng. Photo by  Miroslav Jonas

"Take a chance on (someone or something)" = Đánh liều, mạo hiểm; tạo cơ hội cho ai/cái gì để chiến thắng hoặc thành công khi thấy họ có khả năng thất bại hoặc nhận kết cục tệ.

Ví dụ
However, the excitement for the Rockies could come if another team decides to take a chance on one of the players Colorado left unprotected.

Arsenal need to follow the lead of arch-rivals (đối thủ tinh quái) Tottenham and get a proven manager in place, says John Hartson, with the Gunners in no position to take “a chance” on Freddie Ljungberg.

Instead of just spending dollars seeking new customers and focusing on campaigns shouting about how great your brand is, start by nurturing your existing relationships (duy trì mối quan hệ hiện tại). Brands spend so much money on pre-customers but rarely consider the experience they offer to people once they become customers. When people take a chance on your brand, don't take that for granted. Don't impose (lạm dụng, đánh thuế) your brand on people's lives. Rather, give people reasons to want your brand to be a part of their lives.

"Take to extremes" nghĩa là gì?

Tinh thần thể thao. Photo by  Quino Al

"Take/run/go (something) to extremes" = Dùng đến những biện pháp cực đoan -> Làm điều gì một cách quá mức và cực độ.

Ví dụ
“[Xi and others] like to simplify a complex issue, and take to extremes an issue that people need to have more understanding on,” Liu said.

University exams are stressful for most students. However, it appears that many take to extremes in a bid to pass the exams, especially when unprepared. This was observed by evaluators (người đánh giá, giám thị) of Gujarat University for the statistics paper for B.Com semester 1.

But not just any reason satisfactory to a president represents a legitimate (hợp pháp) “policy” judgment to which he can appeal in defending against the constitutional impeachment (luận tội) process. Presidents can take to extremes their personal judgments and preferences—their choice of ends and their selection of the means to those ends—and they may do so with great confidence in their instincts (bản năng) and in the tactics (thủ đoạn, mưu kế) and strategies that brought them fame and fortune when they were private citizens. This cannot be passed off as policymaking.

"Take (something) in (one's) stride" = Bước qua một cách dễ dàng -> Bạn xem sự thành công và thất bại là điều bình thường trong cuộc sống nên không lo lắng quá nhiều; bạn giải quyết vấn đề một cách bình tĩnh và thành công.

Ví dụ
"It is a challenge to me, which I want to take in my stride. Two years away has been hard balancing between my role as a mother and training.

“He's been a captain and he's a leader. You only have to look at what he did for Sunderland over the last two years. He'll take it in his stride.

"It's an honor for me and for Kenyan referees (trọng tài, người bảo lãnh) to have two of us going to Egypt," said Cheruiyot on Wednesday in Nairobi. "It is a challenge for me, which I want to take in my stride because it is the first time for me to be called to officiate at this higher level."

Thôi xong...Photo by  Frida Bredesen

"Take (something) by the throat" = Bóp chặt cổ -> Đương đầu hoặc giải quyết vấn đề và tình huống khó khăn một cách trực tiếp cùng với hành động rõ ràng và đầy tự tin.

Ví dụ
They don’t so much kill passion as take it by the throat, render it senseless and then bludgeon (đánh bằng dùi cui) it out of existence.

“Even when we finished fifth we lost 4-0 at Wigan and then beat Chelsea away 2-0. “It is such a crazy league. You have to take it by the throat and be ready for whatever gets thrown at you.”

McIlroy went out in 33, and the top of the leaderboard was rich with major winners. McIlroy joined Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose around the lead halfway through the day with Tiger Woods charging in the distance. With the tournament outcome (kết quả của cuộc thi đấu) hanging in the balance and Woods trying to take it by the throat, it was McIlroy who birdied (kỹ thuật ghi) five of the last six holes to get to 18 under and beat Bryson DeChambeau by three.

"What are the odds" = tỷ lệ (hiếm, thấp) khó xảy ra -> câu cảm thán: 'thật khó tin làm sao'.

Ví dụ
We've seen some guesses that make good sense and even have a few of our own that we feel good about, but what are the odds any one of them is right? Well, since you can pretty much bet on (đặt cược) anything, there are legit odds on things like this.

Steele hinted (gợi ý) at a surprise with a tweet after the game in which he included the “thinking” emoji with “Dana’s...see you there.” But what are the odds that, as a fan casually gathering to celebrate a win, the coach of the team walks in and pays for $1,000 worth of drinks?

"Take (something) amiss" = Xem điều gì là sai -> Coi điều gì là vô ích, không phù hợp và hiểu nhầm cái gì; bực mình, phật ý.

Ví dụ
"I hope he won’t take it amiss but if he does it’s a regrettable inevitability (sự không thể tránh) when I say that the Honourable Gentleman has put on the record his understanding of the legal position.

My goal in Caracas is sharp: Interviewing Maduro. I know that all eyes in the world are on him. Even though having just arrived, I snuck into the press conference (cuộc họp báo) on the first day. Do not take amiss, when I say sneaking, I mean achieving something truly impossible by entering the conference room in the middle of the press conference.

“Some of you will continue in your responsibilities, some may change ministries and some may not continue in office,” one minister quoted him as saying at the meeting. “I request those being asked to step down not to take it amiss. I am not asking some of you to quit because you were not up to the task; it’s just that we have to rotate in others who are also deserving.” According to another minister, the prime minister (thủ tướng) was quite defensive about ousting (thay thế, trục xuất) some of his ministers.

"Take (someone or something) for granted" = Xem/mặc định điều gì là hiển nhiên, đúng, sẵn có và phải là vậy; không biết quý trọng/xem thường ai vì cứ nghĩ họ vẫn luôn ở đó cho mình, luôn sẵn sàng khi mình muốn họ nên không thấy giá trị của họ.

Ví dụ
“If they think they can take me for granted, well, think twice about it,” the One Nation leader told Sky News on Friday.

I will always hold dear any victory over TTUN and never take it for granted, as I've cried in my milk too many Sundays following a loss to them.

But eventually, there was no praise, no words of affirmation and appreciation. Her friends began to take her for granted. They wouldn’t even ask for favours any more. They had come to expect them. They would say mean things to her face and behind her back and leave her out of activities. They would also borrow her things and not return them. And every time, she found herself unable to speak up and tell them they had hurt her feelings.

"Take some heat" nghĩa là gì?

"Take (some) heat" = Nhận cơn nóng/tức giận -> Chịu đựng sự chỉ trích hay chửi bới khi bị phát hiện sai lầm của mình.

Ví dụ
He’ll surely take some heat tonight, as will Warren, whose Medicare for All plans continue to draw fire. The economic slowdown (sự chậm lại) will likely be on the agenda (trong chương trình nghị sự).

"I just want to start out by saying I appreciate everything you guys do for LSU and everything you've done for me. You've made LSU kinda national and you made me national. I know you guys take some heat sometimes from us, but I appreciate all the work you guys do for us."

First, I was willing to take some heat. I accepted that I would get fewer clients and thus less income. I insisted on drawing the work I wanted to do, watering down of my politics. If everyone rejected me, that was fine. Better not to appear in print than to do wimpy (nhút nhát, yếu đuối) work. And in the long run, I was better off. There have been rough patches. But progressives have taken over the Democratic Party. I’m one of the few pundits (học giả, nhà phê bình) the left can trust for a simple reason: unlike Bill Maher and Arianna Huffington, I have always been one of them, regardless of prevailing (chiếm ưu thế) winds.

"Take (one's) time" = Cứ từ từ mà làm; dùng nhiều thời gian nhất có thể mà mình muốn để làm việc nào đó; hành động một cách chậm rãi hoặc làm trong lúc rảnh rỗi.

Ví dụ
“This is our chance to get this right and I'm going to take my time,” Rojas said about the investigation.

“It definitely helped being a Spurs boy, but you don’t just turn up and get invited in and start taking pictures,” he added. “In the beginning there were certainly a few people who questioned what I was doing pointing a camera in their face. I knew from the beginning that I had to take my time.”

If you're single, you could be torn between two paths in life. There's no rush to choose whether to remain single or hit yourself to someone. Take your time. If you've already made that decision and are in a relationship take comfort in the one you love. Don't be afraid to share your feelings with them. People are often afraid to have dreams shattered (tan vỡ). But what's the point of living in a fantasy world where nothing is real? These transits (sự đi qua, vượt qua) indicate major adjustments relating to the people you've invited into your life.

“It’s important that this concert hall be enjoyed not only by the university but by the entire community,” explains Dr. Michael Nesbitt. “I invite everyone to ‘take your seat’ in the new concert hall by making a gift to support the new venue. "Take (one's) pick" = Chọn bất kì cái nào mình thích.

Ví dụ
Take your pick between either of the two drops that killed first-half drives. Malik Turner had one on fourth down. Jacob Hollister had one on third down. Both appeared entirely catchable (có thể nắm bắt được). On another third-down play in the fourth quarter, Turner got open near the goal line but didn't seem to be expecting Wilson's pass.
