"Take a bath on" nghĩa là gì?

Đời màu hồng. Photo by  Curology

"Take a bath on (something)" = Trôi như nước/gội sạch cái gì -> Chịu thiệt hại/mất mát tài chính rất nặng về đầu tư/giao dịch cái gì.

Ví dụ
I shake my head thinking, whoever the investors are in this OpenDoor idea are going to eventually take a bath on this deal.

Great price indeed, glad my wallet didn't take a bath on this guy. But mine cost me nothing out of pocket thanks to a local shop owner.

For the dollar to take a bath on two bad data points is rare, especially when we have trade war angst (lo lắng về tình hình thế giới) at the same time (that is normally dollar-positive). The dollar downmove was across the board, against every currency (tiền tệ), and inspired talk of a key reversal point.

"Take a backseat" nghĩa là gì?

"Take a backseat" = Ngồi ghế sau -> Sẵn sàng chấp nhận lép vế trước ai, chịu ở địa vị hay quyền lợi thấp hơn, trở nên ít quan trọng hơn ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Meanwhile, other worthy main event talents had to take a backseat because of WWE's stubbornness (bướng bỉnh, cứng đầu).

Perhaps it’s better that way. As long as people stop getting killed, geopolitics (khoa địa chính trị) can take a backseat — and, this time, a ceasefire (sự ngừng bắn) actually has a chance to hold, at least for a while.

The 18 year-old Tampere, Finland native was recently injured after falling victim to a scary hit to the head in which he had to be stretchered off the ice. Due to this, Puistola might miss the World Junior Championships this year; this should obviously take a backseat to his recovery (sự phục hồi) in what looked to be a horrific injury.

"Take out in trade" nghĩa là gì?

Xúc xích đê! Photo by Sarah Arista

"Take (something) out in trade" = Chấp nhận cái gì để giao dịch/kinh doanh -> Chấp nhận hàng hóa hoặc dịch vụ tốt để trả hóa đơn thay vì thanh toán bằng tiền tệ.

Ví dụ
Park also said he told the woman, who owed him money, that he would “take it out in trade” if she lay down with him, according to the police.

But we can take it out in trade by actually solving the many issues that have become compounded for African-Americans as a result and byproduct of slavery (nô lệ). Think of how liberating it would be to finally break the chains of poverty, mass incarceration (bỏ tù hàng loạt), inadequate (bất bình đẳng) health care, schools that don’t work for our kids, chronic joblessness and systemic racism (phân biệt chủng tộc có hệ thống).

Apart from customer violence and inebriation (say rượu), there are common incidents of non-payment, such as when triad members or drunk, burly men simply refuse to pay, or when a sober individual opens the door at a red light and dashes off into the darkness, or (I'm not making this up) when a woman claims she has no money but is willing to "take it out in trade" in the backseat.

"Take on the nose" nghĩa là gì?

Nghĩ mà buồn. Photo by Rob Schreckhise

"Take (something) on the nose" = Chấp nhận và chịu đựng ảnh hưởng xấu của sự thất bại, khó khăn và thua cuộc.

Ví dụ
When we can take it on the nose, it's a lot easier than when it comes at us from the side, it can get difficult.

But despite the pressures on the actors, it's their directors who really take it on the nose when the films disappoint in any way.

That seems clear enough, but something disturbs (làm lo âu) me about all this. I guess companies and farmers have to take it on the nose if they transgress (vượt quá giới hạn, phạm tội), because the council's process allows plenty of discretion (tự ý định đoạt) and time to get into line; but one council prosecuting another seems daft to me. All that happens is the same ratepayers must shell out to enrich lawyers and the TRC.

"Take (something) on board" = Xem xét hoặc cân nhắc về thông tin hoặc quan điểm vừa mới trình bày; nhận lãnh (trách nhiệm, nhiệm vụ).

Ví dụ
So any positive or negative experiences people have had, we would like to take it on board. We are here to represent everyone,” she added.

"Our business needs to take on board some important lessons about the way we work with postmasters (trưởng phòng bưu điện), and I am determined that it will do so.

"If it happens, it happens. It's obviously a great honour to take it on board but I can't see that far in the future yet," said Cleary, adding the fact he'd have to convince his father to give him the captaincy wasn't a factor.

"Take my side" nghĩa là gì?

I will be by your side forever. Photo by Alex Iby

"Take (one's) side" = Sát cánh bên ai -> Ủng hộ và luôn bên cạnh ai trong một cuộc tranh chấp hoặc cãi lộn nào đó.

Ví dụ
Don't take it personally: Your teen may make a blanket statement like, “You never listen” or “You never take my side,” even if it's not true.

Van Graan now has to take his side over to Allianz Park where they could be in line to face a barrage (chướng ngại) of the English side's top players.

They will take your side and fight for you irrespective (bất luận) of who is on the other side. But even so, they will rebuke (quở trách) you and correct you when you are wrong.

"Take your medicine" nghĩa là gì?

Thuốc đắng dã tật. Photo by Kayla Maurais

"Take (one's) medicine" = Chịu uống thuốc -> Phải chấp nhận điều gì mà không phàn nàn, chống đối hay kháng cự lại nhất là những điều không tốt đẹp, ví dụ như chấp nhận hình phạt.

Ví dụ
The third round when he found himself in a waste bunker on the par-5 11th. Simple enough, right? Punch out, take your medicine, basic stuff.

Take your medicine. When in trouble, find the smart play. Unless forced by an opponent’s position, the aggressive hero shot is a very small percentage option.

As an organization, maybe just take your medicine on this one and don’t say things that make you look stupid. You can make a case to minimize the suspension (sự đình chỉ, treo giò) without saying Dahlin used Cernak’s elbow (khuỷu tay) to knock himself out. That’s nonsense.

"Caught by surprise" nghĩa là gì?

Hú hồn chim én! Photo courtesy: Arul75

"Caught by surprise" = bắt gặp bất ngờ -> làm ai đó giật mình, ngạc nhiên khi họ không biết.

Ví dụ
Maybe I was caught by surprise because I knew so little about Twilight beforehand (trước, sớm) – I hadn't read the reviews, assuming I'd never watch them.

While Netflix is constantly raising prices across its subscriptions internationally, it also debuted (cho ra mắt) a cheaper $3/month plan for mobile-only users in India back in July. The company seems to be caught by surprise by the success of the new tier (phân loại) and is looking to introduce similar inexpensive options to other low-income markets.

At the 30,000-foot level of the corporate suite (dãy phòng), plotting (lên kế hoạch) digital change is heady (hăng hái), exciting stuff. Business leaders can almost smell the gains (tăng) in efficiency and speed and the data-driven increase in customer satisfaction. But success depends less on inspired strategic (chiến lược) planning than on the way people on the front lines (tiền tuyến) implement (thực hiện) new digital tools, and most leaders aren’t laying a foundation for those employees to succeed. In large part, that’s because senior managers don’t have any idea what really happens at the ground level. So when tools don’t get used the way they’re supposed to (or even at all), data-driven insights prove unremarkable (tầm thường), and anticipated gains fail to materialize (trở thành hiện thực), companies are caught by surprise. Their digital transformations become digital flops (thất bại).

"Take further" nghĩa là gì?

Chắc mình đã đi quá xa. Photo by Ihor Malytskyi

"Take (something) further" = Làm vấn đề trở nên sâu sắc hơn -> Có những hành động nghiêm túc, sự phàn nàn hoặc tranh cãi nặng nề về điều gì.

Ví dụ
When that happens, there's a good chance you will have to take the problem further into a court.

“We trust the Saps will investigate whether the information contained is this document is true and if so, take the matter further,” said Mr Pretorius.

“But I understand that for other women it probably triggered some deep feelings, quite rightly in the circumstances.” She had social media messages from people urging her to take the matter further. “I did sympathise with that and I did feel perhaps I was letting people down in that sense. But I also felt that the message we wanted the Treasury to start thinking about, about where money is invested, would perhaps have been lost a little bit.”

"Pull the rug" nghĩa là gì?

Không được đụng vào thảm đâu nha! Photo courtesy: Travis Williams

"Pull the rug (out)" = giật tấm thảm ra -> đột ngột ngừng giúp đỡ ai đó khi họ gặp khó khăn.

Ví dụ
They want to pull the rug out from under the people who really need health care.

It is just breathtaking (ngoạn mục) in its potential to radically (hoàn toàn) transform Britain — to pull the rug out from the toxic social structure of entrenched (cực đoan) privilege (đặc quyền) for the few and intergenerational impoverishment (bần cùng giữa nhiều thế hệ) for the many. It’s not the be all and end all with regard to the class war, but it’s a helluva (đáng chú ý) good start.

Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down (mất cảnh giác)
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
(Bài hát "Someone you loved" - Lewis Capaldi)

"Not take lying down" nghĩa là gì?

Khi bạn gái hỏi password Facebook. Photo by Warren Wong

"Not take (something) lying down" = Không dễ dàng chấp nhận điều gì -> Khi có chuyện xấu xảy đến thì bạn sẽ phàn nàn và đấu tranh chống lại nó.

Ví dụ
While everyone else saw the black bags, all he saw was the 'sale' sign, a comment both AKA and his girlfriend would not take lying down.

Not one to take a thing like this lying down, however, Eminem took to Twitter, saying: You mad bro? Stop lying on my d***. I never even had a chauffeur (tài xế), you bougie f***.

Much of the criticism of Best Coast in the past has been levelled (gắn mác, mặc định) at Cosentino’s lyrics and their simplicity, something she does not take lying down. She admitted: “Best Coast songs have always meant a lot to people because I talk about relatable feelings. I’m not going to apologise for how literal I was lyrically in the past. Some of the greatest music in history has the simplest lyrics.”

"Take (one) for dead" = Xem ai như đã chết -> Nhầm tưởng ai đó đã chết, khẳng định người còn sống đã chết.

Ví dụ
I was wrong when took her dead. I will take a big responsibility for my mistake.

So, it is good news that after a long blackout (sự ỉm đi, tắt điện) and several announcements of its demise (sự chết), secularism (chủ nghĩa thế tục) has raised a finger: Do not take me for dead.

They take him for dead, and set on fire his home, reducing it to ashes (tro bụi). They are about to set his body aflame (rực lửa). His life is saved by seconds because of the arrival of the police and the district commissioner (DC).

"Not take kindly to" nghĩa là gì?

"Not take kindly to (someone or something)" = Thấy khó chấp nhận với ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Russian authorities do not take kindly to their national symbols depicted (được mô tả) in such a fashion and have laws in place to prevent it.

As well as being hard to spot in the water, Hippopotamus amphibious (thuộc lưỡng cư, sự đổ bộ) are very territorial (thuộc lãnh thổ, miền) and often do not take kindly to unwanted visitors.

“We need to employ a 360 degree turnaround strategy to revive football for good. Failure to do so, all of us must accept we are criminals for killing football and our beautiful game, as things stand, is already in the intensive care (chăm sóc cao độ, chuyên sâu) unit of the NFA,” Moetie said in a blunt email to NPL chairman Harald Fuelle, who did not take kindly to the former's position.

"Not take all day" = Không mất cả ngày đâu -> Chỉ việc không mất quá nhiều thời gian để làm, thường là thể hiện thái độ tức giận với ai đó khi nhờ họ làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
“It's something we can do as a team and enjoy each other's company and not take all day,” he said.

Races are not good enough to get the people to stay tuned for all afternoon. A race should not take all day to run.

It will likely not take all day to choose them, Ferguson said, so the rest of the day will likely be used to begin presenting evidence.

"Twist the lion's tail" nghĩa là gì?

Trông ta dễ dãi lắm à? Photo by Tina Nord from Pexels

"Twist the lion's tail" = quấn đuôi sư tử -> khiêu khích, khích bác đối thủ. Ban đầu sử dụng để khiêu khích Anh Quốc (quốc huy nước này có hình con sư tử).

Ví dụ
At my big meetings I nearly always got in something about England, and I thought it very significant that my protests against twisting the lion’s tail were invariably (luôn luôn) greeted with a storm of applause (tràng vỗ tay).

Last July, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani threatened that if Trump expanded sanctions (lệnh trừng phạt) on Iranian oil he would retaliate (trả đũa) by closing the Strait of Hormuz to foreign ships. He told a group of ambassadors (đại sứ), “Mr. Trump! Do not twist the lion’s tail because you will regret.”

Given Great Britain’s tacit support (ngầm ủng hộ) for the Confederacy (Liên minh miền Nam/Hợp bang miền Nam) and American hopes that Canada would become the next territory (lãnh thổ) to be absorbed as the country continued to fulfill its Manifest Destiny, President Andrew Johnson was more than willing to let the Irish Republican Army twist the tail of the British lion.

"Twist the knife" nghĩa là gì?

Tình nguyện bị đâm. Photo by Bia Sousa from Pexels

"Twist the knife (in the wound) = xoáy dao vào vết thương-> làm trầm trọng thêm vấn đề, đổ thêm dầu vào lửa, khiến người "bị đâm" đã đau càng đau thêm.

Ví dụ
If there was one player Hearts did not want to twist the knife in these desperate (tuyệt vọng) times, it was Marvin Bartley.

Officially retired (nghỉ hưu) and living off the grid (sống không hòa lưới điện/mắc đường nước của chính quyền) when we re-join him in Jamaica, not only has Bond seemingly been betrayed (phản bội) by his former lover Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld is back to twist the knife.

The show seems to want to twist the knife in Trump’s wounded ego but it ends up bolstering (củng cổ) his anti-Nato stance (lập trường) by presenting its members as smarmy elitist punks (tần lớp du côn nịnh hót). It’s not the worst cold open of the season, but it may be the most misguided.'

Việt Nam vô địch! Không nói nhiều

đất trời rung chuyển, việt nam vô địch...
-----

After losing five SEA Games football finals - 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2009 - Vietnam finally ended that unwanted record (kỷ lục không mong muốn) with a 3-0 win over Indonesia at Manila's Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday (Dec 10) .

The Golden Dragons, who went into the gold-medal match as firm favourites (ứng cử viên nặng ký), were rarely (hiếm khi) tested (bị thử thách). Star man Doan Van Hau, who plays in the top Dutch division, opened the scoring (bàn mở tỷ số) after 39 minutes, latching (đóng (cửa) bằng chốt, gài then) on to a Do Hung Dung free kick (cú đá phạt) from the edge (bên lề) of the box (vạch 16m50) for a close-range header (đánh đầu ở tầm gần).

Vietnam made it 2-0 in the 59th minute after a scuffed (chạm nhẹ, lướt nhẹ phải (cái gì khi đi qua)) Indonesia clearance (phá bóng) fell to Do, who buried his shot from the edge of the box.

Doan scored his second and his team's third when Indonesia goalkeeper Winata Nadeo flapped at a wide free kick from Nguyen Hoang Duc straight into the path of the SC Heerenveen defender, who slotted home from near the left hand post on 70 minutes. The 19-year-old celebrated by unfurling (mở, trải, giương, phất, dong) a Vietnam scarf (khăn) in front of fans.

"Lot of give-and-take" = Nhiều sự cho và nhận -> Chỉ sự tương tác giữa hai bên, sự bàn bạc và thỏa thuận của hai bên; sự có qua có lại với nhau; nhiều sự đàm phán và thương lượng.

Ví dụ
There's a lot of give-and-take on both sides, and that's the way you can kind of come to grips (nắm chặt) with the situation you're in and move forward.”.

It's a lot of give and take, a lot of give and take, and I'm very patient with it.” Joseph's thinking: The home-design plans eventually will get there.

While codeshare (chuyến bay liên danh) leads to ease of travel for consumers. There is a lot of give and take for airlines during the negotiations stage which deals with commercials (thương mại), how the revenue is divided amongst the two carriers – the one booking the ticket and one operating it. A lot of effort goes into handling nitty-gritties (thực chất của vấn đề) like how many seats can be sold across classes by whom and so on. With Vistara – relative a newer airline looking to build its base, it typically would have been easier to tie up with Vistara over Air India.

"It would take an act of Congress to (do something)" = Có Quốc hội bắt tay hành động mới làm được -> Một việc vô cùng khó khăn đạt được và phải yêu cầu sự nỗ lực và kiên nhẫn rất nhiều; chỉ điều có khả năng không thể làm được.

Ví dụ
The survivors want to take insurance companies to court in the U.S. to recover the money, but it would take an act of Congress to allow it.

It would take an act of Congress to require the CMS to recognize genetic counselors as healthcare providers (việc hỗ trợ chăm sóc sức khỏe). And the issue is gaining traction (sự kéo).

"It takes two to make a quarrel" nghĩa là gì?

Nhường nhịn nhau mà sống cho khỏe. Photo by Thomas Kinto

"It takes two to make a quarrel" = Phải do lỗi hai người mới có vụ cãi nhau chứ -> Một cuộc cãi lộn không thể chỉ do lỗi một người, nếu người kia không có lỗi sao lại phải cãi nhau.

Ví dụ
It takes two to make a quarrel. “Saudia Arabia hasn't taken one refugee (người tị nạn) from Syria explaining “there could be a terrorist (kẻ khủng bố) among them”.

Radhakrishnan’s biographer (người viết tiểu sử) and son, Gopal, tells us that when Stalin did meet Nehru’s ambassador (đại sứ), he found his slim, tall visitor advising him to explore the possibility of détente (tình trạng bớt căng thẳng). On Stalin’s saying he could not do that by himself, the ambassador said it takes two to make a quarrel but one can stop it.

Written by Radain Shah and directed by Aabis Raza, Bewafa seems to tread (bước đi, giẫm lên) on a dicey subject (thứ nguy hiểm). It shows that it takes two to make a quarrel. It questions our definitions of loyalty and cheating, and how men always look outside their homes for solace (lời an ủi), rather than working on relationships at home. We were disappointed to see yet another middle class girl shown as a cunning and a heartless social climber, but let’s hope that the story unfolds (bộc lộ, bày tỏ) better than our expectations.

"It takes getting used to" nghĩa là gì?

"It takes getting used to" = Cần thời gian để quen với/thích nghi với ai/điều gì; ban đầu thì không thích thú lắm nhưng sau một khoảng thời gian thì cũng không còn nhàm chán nữa.

Ví dụ
"These guys, it takes getting used to, it's a rhythm thing. "Early on it's going to be challenging and then once you get used to it it becomes OK.

While it takes getting used to, it comes with the role. “You need to watch the players in case anyone has a delayed injury or a concussion (sự chấn động).

“The field is wider, longer, the downs are different and there's more players on the field. It's a different game up here and it takes getting used to.

But I don't think it would be any more difficult to any other language. It takes getting used to and dedication (sự cống hiến). And practice, practice, practice!

"It takes a thief to catch a thief" nghĩa là gì?

Hacker bí ẩn. Photo by  W A T A R I

"It takes a thief to catch a thief" = Dùng trộm bắt trộm -> Người mà hay phạm pháp hoặc rất giỏi trong việc gây chuyện thì rất giỏi phát hiện hoặc bắt người có kỹ năng/làm điều tương tự như mình.

Ví dụ
“It takes a thief to catch a thief.” Despite being hundreds of years old, this idiom holds perfectly true for that most modern of thieves, the cybercriminal (tội phạm công nghệ cao). With adversaries (đối thủ, kẻ địch) consistently evolving their tools and techniques to overcome defensive solutions, foiling (ngăn cản) their attacks requires ethical hackers who are able to think in the same way and spot the same potential attack pathways.

Hiring ethical hackers to be part of a company's security staff is an approach several tech giants (gã khổng lồ công nghệ) -- including Apple, Google and Microsoft -- have adopted to help them build robust (cường tráng) protections against other, unfriendly hackers. The idea is that it takes a thief to catch a thief. This new approach provides a way for the hospital to use internal employees to identify issues with the network and other areas of the IT systems and fix them before they result in a breach (sự vi phạm).

That’s a perception abetted (xúi làm bậy) by the regulation military fatigues (sự mệt nhọc) worn by Asan, one of a mini-army of game rangers employed by a local conservancy (sự bảo vệ) — and a former poacher himself, qualified for the position by the old “it takes a thief to catch a thief” rationale. He’s also the cousin of “X,” who runs a small-time poaching racket without getting any blood on his own hands, instead delegating the actual hunting to his assistant Lukas. “I don’t like killing,” says “X,” a point he repeats as a kind of moral alibi (chứng cứ ngoại phạm).

Cảm giác bị ai đó theo dõi. Photo by  Allef Vinicius

"Take a shufti (someone or something)" = Nhìn hoặc liếc vào ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Talking to the farm owner, I discovered they have a pretty steady stream of visitors asking for permission to hop over the gate and take a shufti.

When you first take a shufti at the P6, you'll find that the 3.5mm socket (lỗ, ổ cắm điện) is filled with a little tool to prise (cậy lên) open the SIM and Mcro SD ports.

Despite your initial assumptions, it's actually capable of displaying both time and date, and there's even a built-in alarm with a "light-up animation." Fancy! It's available in black with blue, green or red LEDs, and if you order soon, you'll be able to snag one for $129 / £79 / €89; procrastinators (người trì hoãn, chần chừ) will face a sticker of $149 / £91 / €103.
