"Teacher's pet" nghĩa là gì?

Trong lớp luôn có đứa như này, chuyện gì cũng tơn hớt với thầy cô, kết quả là không ai thèm chơi cùng. Photo by chuttersnap on Unsplash

"Teacher's pet" = thú cưng của giáo viên -> ý chỉ học sinh cưng của giáo viên, được quý nhất trong lớp. Cũng chỉ những đứa chuyên đi mách lẻo với thầy cô.

Ví dụ
According to Henry, brother Sam is “a huge teacher’s pet — he sucks up to all of them”.

There are still two terms of this school year left so you can send your child straight to the top of the teacher's pet list if you choose your gifts carefully.

Labels like "teacher's pet," "poor," and "sexist" were placed on TPS students foreheads' Friday during a training focused on school culture, self-development, and team building. Now, some parents are upset by the approach.

If Timmy is the teacher’s pet and he tells on Suzy for stealing a whiteboard marker (bút bảng trắng) from the classroom just so the teacher will like him more (or so there are more markers for him to steal) he’s probably a snitch (kẻ hớt lẻo).

"Teach grandmother to suck eggs" nghĩa là gì?

Cũng gọi là biết chút chút đó chứ. Photo by fauxels from Pexels

"Teach (one's) grandmother to suck eggs" = dạy bà cách hút trứng -> lên mặt dậy đời người thạo việc hơn mình. Tương tự câu trứng đòi khôn hơn vị hay dạy bà ru cháu.

Ví dụ
This may seem like teaching grandma to suck eggs, but you would be amazed (ngạc nhiên) how many firms (công ty) miss the mark with this simple trick.

If this is supposed to be a manifesto (tuyên ngôn) directed at “all those involved in education”, that seems a little too much like teaching your grandmother to suck eggs, and hardly part of a manifesto for change.

If you wanted to know if your eggs were fresh, you should apply your tongue to the large end. If “it feels warm, it is new laid.” Miss Tattersall was literally (theo nghĩa đen) teaching our grandmothers to suck eggs.

They must have told you this: do not teach grandmothers to suck eggs. This wisdom of old is no longer true. Because they do not make grandmothers or eggs like they used to. The former needs teaching, the latter learning about. Oh, what a wonder-filled world (thế giới đầy sự kỳ diệu) we live in!

After Zak’s auto came to a stop, an officer approached the car and saw the suspect trying to conceal (giấu) an open can of Budweiser. A subsequent (tiếp theo sau đó) search of the car turned up a glass crack pipe and a clear baggie “with a whitish residue, which tested positive for crack cocaine,” police reported.

Questioned about the baggie, Zak (seen above) denied ownership of the item and claimed that “the police or the wind must have placed it there.”

For years, University of Miami professor (giáo sư) and author (tác giả) Bruce Bagley served as a go-to quote for reporters (phóng viên) writing about crime (tội phạm) in the Americas. He spoke authoritatively (hống hách, hách dịch) on violent Mexican drug cartels, guerrilla politics in Colombia and violence in Haiti.

But Bagley, the feds say, parlayed (đánh cuộc) his mastery (sự tinh thông, sự nắm vững, sự thành thạo) of Latin American crime into a secret side job — laundering at least $3 million in dirty Venezuelan money through his own U.S. bank accounts and keeping about $300,000 as a fee for himself.

An FBI investigation culminated Monday when South Florida agents arrested the 73-year-old Bagley, shocking the University of Miami and fellow academics across Latin America.

"Experience is the best teacher" nghĩa là gì?

Làm nhiều khắc quen. Photo by Shane Albuquerque from Pexels

"Experience is the best teacher" = kinh nghiệm chính là người thầy tuyệt nhất -> trăm hay không bằng tay quen, làm nhiều, biết nhiều

Ví dụ
"Experience is the best teacher.” That could be the motto (phương châm) for the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business. Deliberately small, the Katz MBA is known for its outputs: high job placement and ROI (tỷ suất hoàn vốn).

"Having said that, people do understand and I understand that we were not a perfect government. I was raised to believe that experience is the best teacher in life and having had that front row seat to see how we got some things very right and some things not as right, I think is invaluable (vô giá)."

If experience is the best teacher is correct, and considering that the proverb has been around since the times of Julius Caesar you can assume it is time proven, then Neal Brown is in a strong position to move West Virginia’s football program forward off the 5-7 record (kỷ lục) compiled in his first season.

"Twist off" nghĩa là gì?

Vặn nút chai này để mở là sai lầm nha quý vị. Photo by Fotograf Jylland from Pexels

"Twist (something) off (something)" nghĩa là vặn rời, vặn gãy, xoắn đứt cái gì.

Ví dụ
The top drink this season is a twist off a popular iced Mexican favorite.

Now to the fun part, opening the bottle. How do you usually do it? If you twist off the cork (nút chai), that’s wrong. If you pop the the cork with your thumbs, that’s also wrong.

The design (which, according to the Amazon page, is about the size of a phone) is extremely simple. You just twist off the cap to reveal an internal system (hệ thống bên trong) of three clear bottles.

Evolutionize (tiến hóa) meal prep. This genius three-layer food prep salad container (hộp đựng) separates your proteins and toppings from your greens, and a mini container with a twist-off top keeps your dressing in check.

In the first nine months of 2019, developers (các nhà phát triển) put up 150 new wind turbines across the country with a total capacity of 514MW — more than 80 per cent below the average build rate in the past five years and the lowest increase in capacity for two decades. The sharp decline (giảm mạnh) has raised alarm (báo động) among political leaders, industry executives and climate campaigners.

“For the fight against climate change, this is a catastrophe (thảm họa),” said Patrick Graichen, the director of Agora Energiewende, a think-tank in Berlin. “If we want to reach the 65 per cent renewables target we need at least 4GW of new onshore wind capacity every year. This year we will probably not even manage 1GW.”

The problem was two-fold, he said: “The federal states have not made available enough areas (không dành đủ đất cho dự án mới) for new wind turbines, and those that are available are fought tooth and nail by local campaigners.”

"Take the shine off (something)" = Làm mất nước bóng, nước láng/tắt nắng đi -> Làm bớt đi sự thú vị, niềm vui hoặc sự hấp dẫn của cái gì; làm dịu bớt sức ảnh hưởng tới điều gì.

Ví dụ
This year will certainly be no exception, and shoppers are advised to be on the lookout for poor quality imitations (sự bắt chước, mô phỏng) which could easily take the shine off the festive season.

Irish rugby has had some of its greatest days in the club competition, but Jackman thinks that only about half of the teams competing have it as their number one goal, which can take the shine off proceedings.

Ví dụ
“If I were Judith, I certainly would take the money and run,” Mr. Cohen added. “He's got plenty of it, but who knows what his future looks like.”.

Finger-pointing tends to land on the exchanges (sự trao đổi) themselves, with some speculating the operators of the exchanges take the money and run.

Not everyone has been willing to just take the money and run to another part of town: In 2008, the Dallas Observer reported “the way Harwood has gone about trying to buy out the holdouts (người hay trì hoãn) … has angered some of the remaining families, who claim the real estate giant (gã khổng lồ bất động sản) is using divide-and-conquer techniques and bullying tactics (mưu kế).” But, in time, deals were done, and the neighborhood erased (xóa bỏ).

"Cut off with a shilling" = cắt đứt bằng một shilling (1/20 của một pound) -> bị cắt quyền thừa kế (có chủ đích) bằng việc cho một shilling. Cụm này thường được sử dụng ở Anh.

Ví dụ
A man cannot cut his wife off with a shilling.

Why, they would cut her off with a shilling and we should be next door to penniless.

It used to be a frequent theme (chủ đề) in novels about family life: “I’ll cut you off with a shilling, young man!” cried the paterfamilias (gia trưởng; cha), or the uncle or aunt. Young sprogs (đứa trẻ) had to be nice to their elderly relatives, and show respect – else they might not be beneficiaries (thừa hưởng) of the old bean’s will (di chúc).

Làm sao gỡ được hết đống này đây. Photo courtesy: Esala Kaluperuma

"Cut the Gordian knot" = cắt nút thắt Gordias -> giải quyết một vấn đề bằng hành động quyết liệt, nhanh chóng. Câu nói này bắt nguồn từ một câu chuyện ở Hy Lạp, các bạn có thể đọc ở đây.

Ví dụ
A similar attempt to cut the Gordian knot of Chapter 4 also proves to be fallacious (sai lầm).

Gun violence has become a Gordian knot. Every time firearm (súng cầm tay) violence tragedies (bi kịch) take place, the US revisits the same cycle of partisan squabbling (cãi nhau giữa các phe), heated social media debates and blame games, which ends with no sensible (thực tế) solutions. It requires American politicians’ courage and will to cut the Gordian knot.

The details of exiting the EU will inevitably (chắn chắc) be devilish (gây hại), but Johnson is already in a strong position to bulldoze (san bằng) one obstacle that stymied (cản trở) May's own negotiated Brexit deal. May's minority government needed the approval of the DUP, and they refused to accept any agreement that distinguished Northern Ireland from the rest of Britain in terms of customs. But there is no way Britain could leave the EU and preserve (bảo toàn) a customs-free border with the Irish Republic without making precisely such a distinction. Johnson's Brexit deal cut the Gordian Knot (though he has not always been forthright (thẳng) in admitting it), and he is now in a position to deliver (thực hiện) even if the Queen's subjects (thần dân) in Ulster object.

"Fond of the bottle" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Stella de Smit on Unsplash

"Fond of the bottle" có từ fond là thích, bottle là chai rượu, -> cụm từ này nghĩa là thích uống rượu/bia.

Ví dụ
Another example: A dentist (nha sĩ) who has become too fond of the bottle stares glumly into his glass at the bar, unwilling to turn around and look at the sight of snow falling while ethereal (cao tít) voices sing "Silent Night." "Everything is fantastic!" another man prompts (thúc giục) him, but the dentist doesn’t even try to understand what he means.

What we do know is that a surprising number of great composers were fond of the bottle. Schubert, for example. There are several accounts of his ‘deplorable (đáng trách) and embarrassing conduct while a guest at private functions in respectable family homes’. Even as a teenager he could be a nasty drunk.

It’s a well-known story. Working-class Liverpudlian hairdresser Rita enrols on a Literature course with the Open University. Her one-to-one tutor is Frank, a jaded (chán ngấy) academic who’s too fond of the bottle.

"Take the lead" = Làm người lãnh đạo -> Nhận trách nhiệm làm việc gì, tự xác nhận mình là người dẫn dắt; làm đội trưởng của đội, người thi đấu hoặc nhóm nào đó.

Ví dụ
Mayor Curry wants to kick JEA’s future over to City Council for it to take the lead. That should be legal, experts say, but a mayor taking a backseat (lép vế, chấp nhận ở địa vị thấp hơn) to such a large proposal is historically abnormal (bất thường).

"Take the easy way out" = Chọn cách dễ nhất để giải thoát -> Kết thúc hoặc giải quyết một tình huống khó bằng cách đơn giản nhất hoặc không để mình gặp bất lợi mặc dù nó không phải là cách tốt nhất. Ví dụ: Khi quá bế tắc trong cuộc sống thì cách tốt nhất là tự kết liễu đời mình.

Ví dụ

By the same token, he didn't take the easy way out against Inter but did what many have been crying out for and played Barca's youth.
