"Back-assward" nghĩa là gì?

"Back-assward" nghĩa là đối lập hoặc trái ngược với những gì được mong đợi, hoàn toàn rối loạn hoặc xáo trộn, thực hiện không đạt yêu cầu.

Ví dụ
As much as we like to think that we use reason to evaluate evidence and come to conclusions (đi đến kết luận), “It really goes back assward, a lot of times,” said Peter Ditto, a psychologist (nhà tâm lý học) at University of California, Irvine.

“Cynthia has been with the city for a long time. She knows the city’s policies,” Moore said. “She’s really smart, innovative (sáng tạo), and calm. She doesn’t get ruffled (mất bình tĩnh) easily.” Coffey, who said Tuesday that the council was working “back-assward” to fill the position, said she was confident Martinez was a good choice.

Barbara, 75, who lives in Maryland, also attended Farr’s workshop. She wanted only her first name used so she could speak openly about subjects sensitive to her family, and wanted to write her own obituary (lời cáo phó) because there isn’t anyone else who will write about what she calls her “back assward” life with honesty and humor.

If you have scrolled through the replies to Netflix’s tweets recently, you’ve likely seen fans pleading via GIFs and words in the hopes that the company will backpedal. Hours after the cancellation was announced, #renewannewithane was trending on Twitter. In two weeks, the hashtag has been tweeted over four million times.

-----
The orchid (hoa lan), for example, is a symbol (biểu tượng) of nobility (tính cao quý, tính cao thượng, tính cao nhã, tính thanh cao; giới quý tộc, tầng lớp quý phái) and elegance (tính thanh lịch, tính tao nhã), as well as friendship (tình bằng hữu). The chrysanthemum (hoa cúc) represents good fortune (phúc lộc) and longevity (trường thọ). And the lotus (hoa sen), given that it emerges unstained (không bị vấy bẩn) by the muck (phân chuồng; (thông tục) rác rưởi; đồ ô uế, đồ nhớp nhúa, đồ kinh tởm; (thông tục) tình trạng bẩn tưởi) and mud (bùn) of the rivers and lakes where it grows, has been a particular favorite for painters and poets throughout history.

But when it comes to picking a national symbol, the most commonly cited potential candidate is the peony (mẫu đơn), which would easily meet all three CFA (China Flower Association) requirements. Chinese have cultivated these flowers for more than 1,600 years, reaching a peak during the powerful Tang dynasty (618-907). Their petals (cánh hoa) are so gorgeous (rực rỡ, lộng lẫy, đẹp đẽ, tráng lệ, huy hoàng; tuyệt đẹp, kỳ diệu) that Chinese call them “the king of flowers,” and of course they are beloved by the people, who associate them with wealth and good fortune.

...Indeed, the plum blossom has already been named China’s national flower — by the Republic of China government in 1928. Advocates (người ủng hộ) justified the choice by citing the plum blossom’s ability to survive the winter frost and its resilient nature — both traits the Nanjing-seated government saw as symbolic of the Chinese people’s own ability to endure hardship. Plum blossom-backers also drew connections between the flower’s five petals and China’s five main nationalities (dân tộc): Han, Manchu, Mongol, Hui, and Tibetan. Even the plum blossom’s three pollen-producing stamens (nhị hoa) had a match in the “Three People’s Principles (nguyên tắc tam dân)” of the Kuomintang (quốc dân đảng), or Nationalist, government.

...Peonies are romantic (lẵng mạn), orchids elegant, lotus flowers pure (trong trắng), and plum blossoms proud (tự hào). It’s their collective beauty that gives spring its magical feel — so why not let a hundred flowers bloom (trăm hoa đua nở)?

"Back-to-back-to-back" là một cụm từ được sử dụng để mô tả ba điều xảy ra liên tiếp, hết lần này đến lần khác.

Ví dụ
“I think our net is a good net,” Bohl said. “We’ve vetted these guys. If we keep on putting these positive classes back to back to back, this is where more consistency is going to come from.”

Reeths-Puffer is hosting the 18th annual MASHF Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament. For the second-straight year, Muskegon County’s three largest schools will play in back-to-back-to-back games against good, regional opponents.

Well actually, my first appearance this season was November 9 — an event to benefit (làm lợi cho) HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. I’ve been pretty much back-to-back-to-back ever since. I've been doing a Ritz-Carlton Fashion Santa tour with stops in Boston, Washington, Miami, and then here in Toronto on December 19.

"Be back in harness" có harness là bộ yên cương -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tiếp tục công việc hằng ngày của ai đó.

Ví dụ
His one big hope, though, is that Johnny Sexton is only temporarily off his feet and will be back in harness later in the tournament (vòng thi đấu) after sitting out this weekend’s showdown (sự đối đầu) with the host nation (nước chủ nhà).

'He was a great horseman (người nuôi ngựa) and a knockabout bloke (gã vui tính). He could train a winner, but he could also celebrate and have a drink. He was the last to leave the pub, he was a machine,'' said rival trainer Manny Gelagotis. But Weir would always be back in harness early the following day.

At a press conference (buổi họp báo), Kuo Shu-Yao, also known as Yao Yao, revealed she’s thrilled to be back in harness. “This season allows me to explore the different facets of my character, especially with the introduction of new characters on the show, including Xiao Zhen’s mother and new friends from her school. Fans can look forward to more exciting adventures and heart-warming stories,” she said through an interpreter.

Năm tuổi của mình sắp qua rồi, vui quá! Photo by Ivana Cajina on Unsplash

"Be glad to see the back of (someone/something)" = vui khi thấy phía sau của ai/cái gì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất vui khi thấy ai đó rời đi (thường là vì người nói không thích người đó); vui mừng khi đã loại bỏ hoặc kết thúc một điều gì đó, thường là điều không mong muốn hoặc rắc rối.

Ví dụ
Nenagh Ormond will be glad to see the back of 2019 after they fell to their seventh successive defeat in All Ireland League Division 2A at the hands of Queens University in Dub Lane, Belfast on Saturday.

As we head into the last month of 2019, it appears that most car companies will be glad to see the back of this year, truly an annus horriblis (năm xui xẻo, năm kinh hoàng) for the industry in the eyes of most observers.

Over in Northern Ireland, Nigel Dodds, the DUP's Westminster leader, saw his seat in Belfast North go to John Finucane of Sinn Fein. Dodds had held this seat since 2001, making his loss a significant one for the DUP - but it's Dodds homophobia (hội chứng sợ và kỳ thị người đồng tính luyến ái) which most people will be glad to see the back of.

Workers at the Wuhan Zoo have put panda dung on display for visitors to smell (ngửi) in a bid to (cố gắng, nỗ lực) teach the public about the animal's digestive (tiêu hóa) habits.

Many zoo-goers said they were surprised to find out that panda's faeces should have 'a fragrant (thơm phưng phức, thơm ngát) smell'. Some thought the waste smelt like 'bamboo (tre)' or 'bread (bánh mì)'.

...The exhibit (triển lãm) is displayed (trưng bày) in a transparent (trong suốt) box with holes (lỗ) for visitors to sniff through. Faced with enthusiastic (háo hức) tourists, The zoo's keepers have promised to use fresh (tươi) droppings every day.

The You Had Me singer,, wearing a white lace headscarf (khăn trùm đầu) in a video posted on Instagram said: “Well, we got to Iran, we got detained (bị bắt giữ) and then we got deported (bị trục xuất).” She appeared to blink back tears as she shook her head and sighed.

"Bring (someone) back out" = đưa ai đó trở lại -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nhắc nhở ai đó, thường là người làm nghệ thuật, hãy quay lại sân khấu để nhận được tràng pháo tay hoặc tán thưởng của khán giả.

Ví dụ
Which means, Hulk is either angry or scared about the sheer (tuyệt đối) power of Thanos, which tracks a bit more with the Strongest Avenger. I think we will see Hulk again (if only to enable the Disney+ series), but Banner will have to give a hell of a pep talk (lời động viên) to bring him back out.

“We tried to give him some rest on defense today, not play him on defense to keep him rested, but Patrick (Morehouse) having the injury we did have to bring him back out,” Crossman said. “There was no way we couldn't have him on the field defensively (để phòng thủ) at that point.”

Darvish capped off the top of the fourth with a strikeout that left two runners stranded on base and received perhaps the loudest, most prolonged chants of his surname that he has ever received from the Cubs fans in attendance. However, Cubs manager Joe Maddon pulled Darvish thereafter (sau đó, về sau) and did not bring him back out for the sixth frame.

China is set to add new coal-fired power plants equivalent to the EU’s entire capacity, as the world’s biggest energy consumer ignores (phớt lờ, bỏ qua) global pressure (áp lực cộng đồng toàn cầu) to rein (ghì cương, kiểm soát) in carbon emissions (phát thải các-bon) in its bid to boost (thúc đẩy) a slowing economy (nền kinh tế tăng trưởng chậm chạp).

Across the country, 148GW of coal-fired plants are either being built or are about to begin construction, according to a report from Global Energy Monitor, a non-profit group that monitors coal stations. The current capacity of the entire EU coal fleet is 149GW.

While the rest of the world has been largely reducing coal-powered capacity over the past two years, China is building so much coal power that it more than offsets the decline elsewhere.

"Blank canvas" có từ canvas là tờ giấy vẽ, blank canvas là tờ giấy trắng mà họa sĩ có thể vẽ bất kỳ cái gì lên đó -> nghĩa là người hoàn toàn ít kiến thức, thông tin, kinh nghiệm và dễ bị tác động bởi điều gì hoàn toàn mới.

Ví dụ
“This area is a blank canvas, and staff believes that by setting higher standards (tiêu chuẩn), this blank canvas could become a premier (nhất) area of Victoria,” wrote Julie Fulgham, the city’s director of development services in a memo (bản ghi nhớ) to the council.

Company representatives (người đại diện) say this is the perfect location for many different reasons. "For me, this is really exciting because it just looks like a blank canvas, and I can't wait to create (sáng tạo) on it," says Bitwise Executive Director of Growth Channelle Charest.

Giving buyers the best of both worlds, this mammoth (khổng lồ) property offers the quiet delights of a country setting while remaining close enough to the city to feel connected. The 2.02 hectares of land is a blank canvas to build your dream home in the emerging (nổi bật) suburb (ngoại ô) of Wandi, which is fast becoming a buzzing community in Perth’s southern corridor (hành lang).

"Carry (someone) back to (some time)" = đưa ai trở về thời điểm nào đó -> cụm từ này nghĩa là khiến ai nghĩ, nhớ về một người hoặc điều gì đó trong quá khứ; nhắc ai nhớ về một thời điểm trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ
The 7Star Thattukada restaurant in Umm Al Hassam is the perfect place to enjoy traditional Kerala cuisine (ẩm thực). It offers a wide variety of nostalgic dishes that carry you back to the old days of your mother’s cooking.

As you decorate for the season using different Advent herbs, take the time to inhale their fragrances (hương thơm ngát), and let the lavender, sage (cây xô thơm), rosemary (cây hương thảo) and thyme (cây húng tây) carry you back to the beginnings of Advent and the true meaning of Christmas.

As you begin any intimate activity, give yourself permission to be carried away by positive triggers that come up. For example, your honey’s smile. When you see it, let it take you back to the romantic trip the two of you took to Cancun. Your loved one’s body may have changed, but their million-dollar grin can still set your heart a’beatin. Let the sight of their smile carry you back to the hot afternoon you spent together in your sunbaked, beachside hotel.

These cards can vastly change how a round plays out. They can force your opponent to skip, allow you to claw your way back from a bad first round, or lull your opponent into a false sense of security, surprising them with a powerful card at the end of a round.

"That has had a really profound implication (hàm ý sâu sắc) for millennials' prospects. If you lose that first decade when you are supposed to really be getting your economic feet, it becomes very difficult for you to try to claw your way back from it."

Photo by Steinar Engeland on Unsplash

"Come/return back to haunt (someone)" = quay về để ám ai -> cụm từ này nghĩa là theo đuổi ai đó trong hình dạng ma quái hoặc siêu nhiên; (tình huống trong quá khứ, quyết định,... mang tính tiêu cực) tái diễn, gây ra vấn đề cho hiện tại hoặc tương lai; xuất hiện trong ý thức của một người, như một ý nghĩ hoặc ký ức.

Ví dụ
Don’t be fooled by the striking rhythm and cheerful title of this song – it’s actually a pleasure to see your ex come back to haunt you after he mistreated (ngược đãi) you and made you realize DGAF.

Great food, social and religious activities, and spending time with family is why so many people enjoy the Christmas season. Too much rich food at the wrong time can come back to haunt you during the night. If you’re overbooked with late night outings (cuộc đi chơi), it’s easier to get away from your normal sleep schedule.

The long-term consequences of unexpected expenses can be severe, too. If you take on credit card debt (nợ tín dụng), you could end up paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars in interest (tiền lãi) alone. And if you tap your retirement fund or postpone saving for retirement to pay for an unexpected expense, that decision could come back to haunt you come retirement age when your nest egg isn't as strong as you'd hoped.

"Give (one) an out" = Cho ai thoát ra ngoài -> Tạo lý do hoặc phương cách để ai trốn thoát khỏi điều gì.

Ví dụ
It has revealed, tell her that you understand if she sometimes can't make it to your house at noon, and simply give her an out, if she wants.

Lahren ironically (mỉa mai, trớ trêu) calling someone else a political genius (thiên tài) is the height of obliviousness, but Cardi generously gave tried to give her an out.

Well, for me, that was yet another reminder that there's so little transparency (tính minh bạch) within the hierarchy (cấp bậc). The fact that they allowed him to use such a euphemistic (uyển ngữ, nói trại) and evasive (lảng tránh) term really speaks to the fact that they treat each other differently than the same case would be handled in the corporate public sector. So, yes, we're grateful that he's gone. But we all know so clearly what the circumstances were. And I felt that they tried to give him an out, essentially.

'I don't like to talk about it I tried to protect Nigella to the end, I never faced her because I didn't want to disappoint her or give her a red face'.

In hindsight (sự nhận thức muộn) it’s a crazy rationalisation (sự hợp lý hóa) and I am proud that I can laugh today without feeling guilt and knowing that my mum would not want a world of sadness. I think the mere idea of it would give her a red face that we were making a fuss.
