"The slings and arrows" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Matheus Ferrero on Unsplash

"The slings and arrows" -> nghĩa là lời chỉ trích/phán xét gay gắt, nghĩa khác là những khó khăn, gian khổ.

Ví dụ
UCSF, Conduent are latest to suffer the slings and arrows of ransomware (mã độc). Academic health research institution the University of California, San Francisco and business process services company Conduent have emerged as two of the latest prominent (nổi bật) victims of organized ransomware attacks.

Despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune these intrepid (gan dạ) young players have persisted and created a live theater experience worthy of this provoking tragedy that can be enjoyed by ten audience members for each performance in the outdoor courtyard at UU Santa Fe.

The experience taught me that I never really know what’s going to happen next. I plan as best I can, but now I’m far more able to pivot my thinking. I have the capacity to cope (xử lí) with more of life’s unexpected slings and arrows, to accept the difficulties I face and keep going, even though it can be hard.

"Give him the shove" nghĩa là gì?

Độc thân vẫn là nhất!! Photo by: Luke Ow on Unsplash

"Give him the shove" có từ shove là xô đẩy -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sa thải ai, nghĩa khác là kết thúc quan hệ tình cảm, chia tay.

Ví dụ
The rumour (tin đồn) had it that they wanted Dane to go to rehab (cai nghiện) to get off the afternoon brewskis (bia), and thus activate a get-out clause in his hefty contract, that Quik could use to give him the shove.

When are Sinn Féin and the IRA going to have a secret meeting and give him the shove? He has become an embarrassment (điều hổ thẹn) – admit it.

Her dad says she'll have her parents' blessing (phúc lành) when she goes, but they like having her around, and they're not going to give her the shove.

"Before the wind" nghĩa là gì?

"Before the wind" = trước cơn gió -> nghĩa là rất vội vàng, hấp tấp, chạy đua với gió để đi nhanh hơn.

Ví dụ
Having fallen asleep in his boat, Victor wakes with no option but to “drive before the wind”, avoiding “the wide Atlantic”. Blown across hazardous (nguy hiểm, liều) waters, he finds himself in Ireland, a “wild and rocky’ place with ‘traces of civilisation’ (những vết tích của nền văn minh).

Speaking to Daily Hive from Florida, Clark shared that his father owned a GoKart track in Whitby, Ontario. He worked there growing up, and again after serving a decade in the Navy. “It’s the exhilaration of driving. It’s like a convertible (ô tô bỏ mui được). You drive before the wind” Clark said.

Start your run into the wind and finish with it at your back, so the breeze (gió nhẹ) doesn’t blast (gây họa, làm tàn) you after you’ve broken a sweat. To avoid a long, biting slog (cú đập, cú đánh mạnh), try breaking it up: Run into the wind for about 10 minutes, turn around to run before the wind for five minutes, and repeat.

"Be scattered to the four winds" nghĩa là gì?

"Be scattered to the four winds" có scatter là rải, rắc, phân tán -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phát tán rộng, theo mọi hướng (bốn phương, tám hướng).

Ví dụ
“For better or worse, dinnertime at my dad’s house was very important,” Villani recalled. “Every kid in the neighborhood knew their father’s whistle cadence (điệu huýt sáo). We’d all be scattered to the four winds doing our thing, and you hear your father’s whistle and that was dinner time for us. In the middle of whatever you were doing, you had to drop it.”

Say what you will about Mayor de Blasio (and let’s hear it, especially if it’s critical!), but city workers are facing an unprecedented challenge: thousands have been infected, hundreds have died and their coworkers are scattered to the four winds (and five boroughs (thành phố, thị xã)). We are always expecting perfection from them, but let’s be honest: it’s asking too much right now. So let’s just take a deep breath and give them a break (except the NYPD).

Our huge foreign aid budget is scattered to the four winds. It follows no plan. It is not concentrated in countries where we have close historic or political ties or where our aid can have a transformative (biến đổi) effect. We do not even use it to give university scholarships (học bổng Đại học) to future leaders — once an invaluable and wholly benign (tốt lành) source of influence. It is deliberately not aimed to further our interests. We rarely even insist (unlike other donors) that it should be acknowledged as ‘a gift of the British people’. Much of it is simply cash handed over to governments (for example, that of Pakistan) or NGOs. British officials exercise little or no effective control over its use or its effectiveness.

"Be blowing in the wind" nghĩa là gì?

"Be blowing in the wind" = bay trong gió/bị gió cuốn đi -> nghĩa là không được xem xét, cân nhắc; chưa đưa ra quyết định cuối cùng về việc đó.

Ví dụ
At meeting’s end, I shared that I had been a barber for six years in my seminary days and would be happy to give a haircut to anyone who needs one. There are many long-haired individuals here at this time. So far, Francis is the only one who has risked time in my barber chair but I can assure you that, in the aftermath of his courageous moments in that chair, no visible damage resulted. However, his hair will no longer be blowing in the wind. Aloha.

The unity among young people of all races and backgrounds marching along the streets of our major cities shows that the seeds of a society centered around human solidarity (tính thống nhất, đoàn kết) are blowing in the wind. The tragedy (bi kịch) of George Floyd’s killing is starting to blossom in new flowers of hope. Our task now is to realize the potential of this moment and enhance its power until it becomes the dominant ethos (đặc tính nổi bật, điểm đặc biệt) of our time.

This New Zealand series feels like a new Test era, with Chris Silverwood replacing Trevor Bayliss as coach, and it is a good time for Joe Root to rethink his captaincy (thuyền trưởng, chỉ huy). At times it has felt like Root is blowing in the wind and changing tack too easily. First there was the attacking style when he wanted his team to emulate Eoin Morgan’s white-ball side, when they should have been playing the conditions and just trying to win. Since then, Root’s England have been too quick to change tactics (mưu kế, chiến thuật) rather than give a plan a real go. And Root himself has gone from four to three in the batting order, then back to four again.

"As swift as the wind" nghĩa là gì?

"(As) wift as the wind" = nhanh như gió -> nghĩa là nhanh kinh khủng và đầy tốc độ.

Ví dụ
I didn’t have time to see Shingen’s earthworks (công việc đào đắp, công tác đất), but I was able to see the Takeda Shrine, where visitors can see his ancient battle flag. It carries an inscription from Sun Tzu’s Art of War: “as swift as the wind, as quiet as a forest, as swift as a fire, as unshakable as a mountain.”

I had only just opened the front door. It was an instant attack. The swarmed passed the two cars resting in the porch (hiên, hành lang), over the little pots and raggedy plants, and fell upon me in a heap to disgusting to describe. Cry out I did not, for they were as swift as the wind and my voice was lost in their suffocating grip (kìm, ôm chặt nghẹt thở).

In the novel, Dong Zhuo rescued the young Han Emperor from the Ten Eunuchs, only to end up subjugating (chinh phục, khuất phục) the royal. Dong Zhuo’s tyrannical grip knew no bounds, wantonly (ngang ngạnh) executing officers and humiliating the imperial (oai nghi, quyền thế) family. Absolute power led to absolute corruption — he killed not just the men, but the women and children, too. At his side stands the mighty Lu Bu, considered the greatest warrior in all of China. A saying goes: “Among men Lu Bu, among horses Red Hare” — the latter refers to Lu Bu’s extraordinary steed who can travel great distances as swift as the wind.

"To barely make it on time" nghĩa là gì?

"To barely make it on time" -> nghĩa là hiếm khi đúng giờ (hạn chót, cuộc hẹn, lớp học...) nhưng cuối cùng cũng xoay xở đúng hạn.

Ví dụ
It’s Saturday night and I have a date — a second date, in fact, with a handsome 42-year-old who’s taking me to see They Might Be Giants at First Avenue. I glance at my watch — show time is 8 p.m. and it’s already quarter to six. If I leave right now, I will just barely make it on time.

Oh my gosh, what are you talking about? We always barely make it on time! Really…the most recent film that was dangerous was Boy and the Beast. There was so much stuffed in as a story but we didn't have time, and it was crazy. We tried to learn from that experience and for Mirai we gave ourselves more time, and it was shorter, so we thought it would be easy, but…it was also barely made in time. We always barely make it. No matter what the circumstance, it's always tight… “(laugh)” Or rather, “(sob)”

Let’s take the example of being late to class. If you lock your bike you are going to be 10 entire seconds late to your microeconomics (kinh tế học vi mô) class and probably get reamed by your professor for being late. So, you decide to throw your bike into a bush and just sprint down the hallways of DeBart to just barely make it on time. Unfortunately, when you walk out of class, your bike is now the latest decoration on a tree. It may seem like the end of the world, but there is one positive takeaway: At least you still have your bike. In the real world, it would go more like this.

"Time's a-wastin'" nghĩa là gì?

"Time's a-wastin'" -> nghĩa là đang tốn thời gian; sắp muộn.

Ví dụ
“Time’s a wastin’ and time is important,” he said. “If voters get the chance to vote, what’s an election without a campaign?” Barrow, who lost his bid for secretary of state in a 2018 runoff, also took aim at the three justices who didn’t recuse themselves from the case, singling out Justice David Nahmias by name.

I carried the bags as Sandy walked ahead of us into the house. Sotto voce, I asked, "So, what's the deal here, Lenny? That's a good-looking woman. She single?" Chuckling, Lenny smiled and shook his head. "I know, but it's not like that," he explained. "You know what? I believe it is like that, or could be. Like they say — time's a-wastin'. If I were you, I'd scoop (hất lên) her up while I still can."

When this weekend disturbance in manager Rocco Baldelli’s plans for a low-stress spring training has ended, a group of St. Louis Cardinals will visit Hammond Stadium on Monday for the start of the last two weeks of major league exhibitions. As much as spring training can drag, time’s a-wastin’, and Byron Buxton remains on a schedule that would not have him in a game until the final week in Florida.

"Time is on your side" nghĩa là gì?

"Time is on (one’s) side" -> nghĩa là có nhiều thời gian để làm việc gì, có lợi thế về thời gian (thời gian ủng hộ mình).

“At this point in your life, time is on your side,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity. The world has literally stopped spinning. The treadmill (cối xoay guồng) has stopped. You can step off and just look around and decide what it is you want to do in the future.”

Williams, who turns 38 on Sept. 26, has made four Grand Slam finals since her return to the tour after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, two years ago. She has not won a set in any of them. But she has looked better in each one, especially at the U.S. Open where she mounted a furious comeback in the second set and almost won it. Her longtime coach says time is on her side.

Bobby’s achievement chiselled (chạm, trổ) his name into the granite (đá hoa cương) of English footballing history; a knighthood (tầng lớp hiệp sĩ) and a statue (tượng) outside the heart of English football followed. After repeating the feat at under-20 level in 2017, Cook has yet to enjoy the luxuries that Moore did - but time is on his side. When they lifted England’s first international title in over half a century, much was expected of the U-20 side - it still is, for many of them. Given that it’s three years today since that historic night, what’s become of that side now?

"Hot as the dickens" nghĩa là gì?

Trời đã nóng, gặp cảnh này còn nóng hơn. Photo by: Ryan Christodoulou on Unsplash

"Hot as the dickens" = nóng như quỷ -> nghĩa là cực kì nóng nực, khó chịu.

Ví dụ
It was quite an honor to have him start here, according to those who were there. It was hot as the dickens in Jones Park that late August day, but Bush pulled off his coat and waved to the crowd in what has become an iconic (biểu tượng) photo of an enthusiastic campaigner (người lính già).

While it's still hot as the dickens outside, the town pool is closed for the season, and Milford folks will have to find alternate (thay thế) swimming solutions.

In Kansas, cinnamon (quế) earned top honors. "It gets hot as the dickens in Kansas — even when it comes to dessert," the study says. "The people of this middle-America state love them some cinnamon jelly beans."

"Scare the dickens out of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Clint Patterson on Unsplash

"Scare the dickens out of one" có từ dickens là ma, quỷ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bất ngờ khiến ai phát hoảng, kinh hãi/thất kinh.

Ví dụ
If the events — before, during and after — of Hurricane Irma were not enough to scare the dickens out of you, I don’t know what will. I cannot impress (ghi sâu) enough upon the readers of this column how important it is to be totally prepared for a natural disaster before any warnings are issued.

Other times, she tries to scare the dickens out of me by saying something like, “You’re misplacing (để không đúng chỗ) things a lot lately, and I’m starting to worry...” Then, down the rabbit hole we go.

With Halloween just around the corner, haunted houses around the country aim to scare the dickens out of people, but one man offers what can only be described as an ‘extreme experience’ in Alabama and Tennessee that’s so terrifying he requires participants bring a medical clearance and sign a 40-page waiver (giấy khước từ).

Ví dụ
I woke up this morning, feeling a bit down. I’m usually an upbeat (lạc quan) person, but I suppose the past few months have taken a toll (tổn thất). My first thought was: What in the dickens has happened to our wonderful country? I remember, not so long ago, the days when most of us were proud to be Americans —– and, I’m glad to say, I still am.

I guess it’s one more sign that I’m old and out of touch that when I got the mail this past week and found a debit (ghi nợ) card from the federal government, my first thought was, “What in the dickens am I supposed to do with this?”

“I thought, ‘What in the dickens is that?’ ” he said in his video account. He went out on the deck, “looked up and saw this plane dipping . . . and it had red balls on its wings,” he said. “I said a cuss (chửi rủa) word and said, ‘The Japanese are here,’ ” he remembered.

"Sold a pup" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Pavel Anoshin on Unsplash

"Sold someone a pup" -> nghĩa là mua phải thứ hoàn toàn vô giá trị, bị lừa đảo, lừa bịp.

Ví dụ
Most pets are for families with kids who are bored (chán nản) in the Lockdown. But be warned, there are many scammers (kẻ lừa đảo) out there and you might get sold a pup.

Consumers are being sold a pup. The cost-benefit analysis purportedly (tự cho là) justifying (bảo chữa) the grid link is a travesty (nhại lại). Aside from the standby plant being omitted from the project cost, its fundamental assumptions are false and important calculations and data on costs and profitability have been withheld from public scrutiny. I for one have raised a Freedom of Information request to obtain the figures.

MIKEL ARTETA is now finding out that life as Arsenal boss is not all it is cracked up to be. Only six months into his first manager’s job, he is already wondering if he has been sold a pup by the Emirates executives.

"Weigh one's words" có từ weigh là cân nhắc, xem xét cẩn thận -> cụm từ này nghĩa là suy nghĩ, cân nhắc kỹ trước khi nói, phát biểu.

Ví dụ
Weigh your words before mocking (trêu trọc) the overweight (béo phì). Somebody carrying extra pounds may be suffering from a thyroid (tuyến giáp) problem.

Weigh your words before discussing (bàn bạc) something prestigious (uy tín) with someone influential. Financial crunch faced by you is likely to ease soon.

"With time to spare" = còn dư thời gian -> nghĩa là không vượt quá thời gian đã định, sớm hơn so với yêu cầu.
Ví dụ
Special shout out to Jim McKenna, who improves as moderator every meeting. No one believed he could pull off the feat of getting through 40-ish articles in his predicted 120 minutes, but he did so with time to spare. Very impressive.

“The changes our brokers need to implement are subtle and are really around expanding on steps that brokers already do. We’ll continue to support our brokers every step of the way to ensure they understand and can implement any necessary changes easily.” Connective plans to put the finishing touches on its compliance policies and procedures as soon as possible, to ensure the changes are implemented for its broker network with time to spare.

It was well past midnight when I arrived back in the newsroom, to the clicking and clattering of typewriters. The keys did not press down easily, and were in dire need of a little WD40. This could be a little stressful with the editor waiting for your proofread (đọc rà soát) copy. But it didn’t faze (làm bối rối, làm phiền) me. Typing at a deliberate pace with accurate statistics, good notes and great quotes, I always turned in my article with time to spare.

"While an hour away" nghĩa là gì?

"While (a period of time) away (doing something)" có while away là giết thời gian -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm đại việc gì đó cho vui, để bớt nhàm chán vì đang rảnh.

Ví dụ
Young couples work for years to buy a home of their own, while two hours away in Huizhou, thousands of modern apartments stay empty.

Pretty much all of the imagery either have rose petals, coffee, wine and food, but this one stands out for the iPhone with its stock photo of a woman playing a Ukulele. Honestly, best way to while an hour away in the bath.

There’s a lot to see within a few miles of Staniel Cay—and even more tranquil (yên tĩnh) deserted beaches on which to while a day away—so it’s a little disconcerting to see the masses beating tracks for the island with only one unlikely, rather smelly attraction in mind: a motley gaggle (một bầy ngỗng sặc sỡ) of greedy, amphibious (lưỡng cư) swine (con lợn, vật ghê tởm).

"Times change and we with time" nghĩa là gì?

"Times change and we with time" -> nghĩa là khi thời gian trôi thì con người và mọi hoàn cảnh cũng thay đổi theo (chúng ta thay đổi theo thời gian).

Ví dụ
You may be surprised to realize that self-awareness (tự nhận thức) isn’t a destination, but a journey. Because times change and we with time. That way, we always need to keep up with our emotions, feelings, and expressions.

“Kids under the age of 12 to 14 should play a less contact form of soccer which we should develop for them. Kids between 12 and 18 can play but should not head the ball. I know this is difficult for many people but science evolves. Times change and we with time It is time for us to change some of our ways,” he said.

Your kitchen is arguably an essential space in your house. It’s THE point of social interaction and family tete-a-tete. However, you know what they say; times change, and we with time. Your kitchen also is a natural recipient of this change in needs – A very strong driving force to upgrade your kitchen. But most of us chicken out before taking the plunge (quyết tâm hành động, liều). Either we aren’t sure where to begin or we can’t place the factors that scream for your space rejuvenation (sự làm trẻ lại).

"Up to your ears in debt" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Karolina Grabowska on Pexels

"Up to your ears in debt" -> nghĩa là nợ nần ngập mặt, nợ nần chồng chất.

Ví dụ
If you can afford to buy a million-dollar house you shouldn't need a leg up (hỗ trợ) from the Government, unless you are up to your ears in debt.

Why you should still throw at least some money into savings, even if you're up to your ears in debt. Setting aside some money for savings is essential (quan trọng) for indebted millennials: Focusing solely on debt keeps you in the past, but savings (even small amounts) offer optimism (điều lạc quan) for the future.

In the short-term, spending your loan money on something else apart from your tertiary education may not seem like a big deal. Others have done it, you tell yourself as you make a mental note to take up a part-time job to earn some cash on the side. But then the semesters zip by (vèo qua) and the little you earn, you spend on gas for those long road trips with friends. Before you know it, you’re graduating and up to your ears in debt.

"Have a tin ear" = có tai bằng thiếc -> nghĩa là không có năng khiếu hoặc hiểu đầy đủ về cái gì, không am hiểu âm nhạc; "đàn gảy tai trâu".

Ví dụ
Trump seems to have “a tin ear” when it comes to military issues, said Peter Feaver, a professor of political science and public policy at Duke University and former adviser (cố vấn) to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

He ignored covid red flags raised by US intelligence agencies in January. Despite evidence (bằng chứng) from South Korea on the efficacy (hiểu quả) of mass testing (thử nghiệm), it was too late by the time the US ramped its efforts up. All along, he seemed to have a tin ear for scientists.

New Zealand First promised the farmers that we would not have a tin ear, that we knew how critical they were to our economy, that we also believed that they were interested in reform (cải cách) as we are.

After a lengthy trade riff by Trump, with all his favorite lines (“The EU is just like China, only smaller”), Haley asked him about a trip she wanted to take to India to visit the Dalai Lama. The purpose of this trip was unclear, other than getting a photo op with the Dalai Lama, always good for an aspiring pol. But the minefield she strayed into by raising the China trade issue showed a political tin ear: once Trump wondered how China would view Haley’s seeing the Dalai Lama, the trip was essentially dead. This episode confirmed to Pompeo how far out of line Trump had allowed Haley to drift, and why it had to stop.

Young Americans are having less sex -- and they can't even blame (đổ lỗi) the coronavirus pandemic for this one.

Sexual inactivity increased among young American men between 2000 and 2018, according to researchers from Indiana University and Sweden's Karolinska Institutet who studied survey data from US adults. Postponement of adulthood and the growth of the internet and digital media could be reasons for why.

Researchers analyzed data looking at sexual frequency and number of sexual partners, looking at responses supplied by more than 4,000 men and 5,000 women for each question.

Men who were unemployed, had part-time employment or lower incomes were more likely to be sexually inactive, researchers found, noting that the percentage of sexually inactive 18- to 24 year-old men increased from 18.9% between 2000 and 2002 to 30.9% between 2016 and 2018.

Women aged 25 to 34 were also having less sex,
