"Can't have it both ways" nghĩa là gì?

Giao lưu văn hóa, hòa nhập, đừng hòa tan. Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels

"Can't have it both ways" = khó có thể thuận đôi đường -> không thể cái gì cũng muốn (không thể giảm cân khi muốn ăn nhiều chẳng hạn). Ngược lại ta có thể nói "tries to have it both ways" hoặc "wants to have it both ways" khi người đó đạt được tất cả những gì họ muốn.

Ví dụ
It’s time for progressives (chủ nghĩa tiến bộ) to decide between embracing multiculturalism (đa văn hóa) or policing “cultural appropriation (chiếm đoạt văn hóa).” They can’t have it both ways.

We all want bigger displays (màn hình), or at least, a big display in a compact housing (khối nhỏ gọn). It’s also going to come as a relief to those calling for smaller phones. A folding device (thiết bị gập) means we can have it both ways.

If we don’t reverse course (đảo ngược tình thế) now, will anyone take anything we say about justice (công lý) and righteousness (sự công bằng) with any seriousness for decades to come? The answer is no. Evangelicals cannot have it both ways.

"Be in a bad way" nghĩa là gì?

Khi lương chưa về... Photo by Robert Bogdan from Pexels

"Be in a bad way" nghĩa là trong trường hợp rủi ro, chiều hướng xấu hoặc đang ốm, thể trạng không tốt.

Ví dụ
The Steelers are in a bad way financially.

The opposition PSOE party (Đảng đối lập) in Olula de Rio claims the municipal finances (tài chính thành phố) are in a bad way.

I've just had a period of laying on the sofa, over-thinking. Not necessarily in a bad way, though. It's been quite peaceful to sit and have literally nothing to do.

“It’s easy to use wireless in a bad way,” said Dan Wallach, a computer science professor (giáo sư khoa học máy tính) at Rice University and a member of the EAC’s technical guidelines committee (ủy ban chỉ đạo công nghệ).

"Go into/make a song and dance (about something)" = Nhảy múa lên đi. -> Làm om sòm ầm ĩ về cái gì; có những phản ứng hoặc gây sự phiền hà cho vấn đề gì.

Ví dụ
They don't make a song and dance about it. They simply place children with disabilities alongside children without disabilities – just like in life.

I don’t believe that before last week I’ve ever quit any organisation on an issue of principle. I tend to find people tiresome who make a song and dance about doing so. I never thought that one day I’d be ‘making an exhibition of myself’ (as my father used to say) and certainly not so late in my life.

"I know who I am and what I did. The truth will come out," he told France Football magazine. "And the people who criticise me and who expose my life today, who make a song and dance about it, these people will see." The allegations (sự viện lẽ) have taken a toll on his life, and in particular on his family, he said.

"Go in with good cards" nghĩa là gì?

Dành cả thanh xuân ngồi trên ghế nhà trường chỉ mong tới ngày được mặc trang phục tốt nghiệp. Photo by Honey Yanibel Minaya Cruz

"Go in with good cards" = Đánh lá bài ngon trong tay -> Thực hiện điều gì với kỳ vọng hoặc biết trước sẽ thành công vì có lý do xứng đáng được như vậy.

Ví dụ
Brain chemistry tells us that going in with good cards is a strong motivator, providing more pleasure than the actual achievement of success.

Many fans even believe that they didn’t see the best version of Edwin Encarnacion, which is disappointing for the amount of money the organization spent on him, along with going in with good cards that came with Edwin.

What is the force that drives you? Is it the fear of failure or going in with good cardss? As it turns out, most people are driven by a combination of the two. The idea of success gives us wings, but before we can do anything about it, the fear of failure creeps in and starts chopping off our feathers.

"Go in one ear and out the other" nghĩa là gì?

Điếc không sợ súng! Photo by  kyle smith

"Go in one ear and out the other" = vô tai này ra hết tai kia. -> Nghe xong quên liền/bỏ ngoài tai luôn; không để ý và quên nhanh tới điều người ta nói.

Ví dụ
“You could definitely get a sense that she listened. She wasn’t just standing there, letting things go in one ear and out the other,” Luis Carrasco said.

The statistics (thống kê) about how social media is harmful and the rants and judgements of older generations about how we are addicted to our phones can frequently go in one ear and out the other. While technology and social media undoubtedly have downsides, they also have given our generation immense advantages in the way we interact with each other and our surroundings.

I wish I could say that these kids were just testing me. Sure, that would make me look incompetent (kém cỏi), but there would be hope for the children. Instead, I had an educational assistant confide that it was always like this. I asked her, “Well, do the six-year olds often swear at you?” She replied yes, and that you just have to let it go in one ear and out the other, to focus on the more pressing behavioural issues. My heart broke.

Therefore, if you are planning to go in a body, you and your mates are best off all trying to buy tickets until one of you gets through.

"Be way off beam" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by George Becker from Pexels

"Be way off beam" hoặc "off the beam" có từ "beam" là dạng tín hiệu radio cho máy bay, giúp máy bay hạ cánh đúng hướng. Cụm từ "way off beam" có nghĩa là sai, không chính xác.

Ví dụ
'Harass (quấy rối) you? Stalk (theo dõi) you?' Reuben shook his head. 'You're way off beam, Billie. Way off. I love Miranda. Very much.'

The newspapers are full of it and, unless they're way off beam, you're aiming to arrest (bắt giữ) Jinx or her father because of the way Russell died.

You're way off beam on this one. Now back off before I do something I'll regret. You've got to give me some space, for Christ's sake. I need to think.

That's why,' he looked full into Slider's eyes, his own now a little too shiny, like those of a stuffed animal (thú nhồi bông), 'that's why you're way off beam if you think Josh had anything to do with her death. If it was me you suspected (nghi ngờ), there'd be more sense in it.

"Go home to mama" = Về nhà với mẹ -> Từ bỏ điều gì như hôn nhân, ước mơ hoặc tình yêu để trở về với gia đình hoặc quê hương.

Ví dụ
“It's a kid who graduates from Lehigh and he doesn't want to go home to mama and he can afford $500 to $700 a month,” Atiyeh said.

When you take a look at the Hilux bakkie, which needs to go home to Mama once a year or every 10 000km, the difference is even bigger.

In 2016, however, Jamie Dixon made a clear downward (đi xuống, giảm dần) move in the industry without being fired at Pittsburgh. He wanted to go home to mama.

"Set someone/something free (from something)" nghĩa là giải thoát, giải phóng ai/cái gì khỏi điều gì.

Ví dụ
If you really feel the need, try using natural foods such as fruits, honey, natural dairy products, and other materials. This will make your skin glow (hồng hào) and will set you free from the risks of dangerous diseases.

All of us have someone in our lives who we could do with forgiving. This health snack has been designed to set you free from the negative emotions you may have been carrying about. Forgiveness is a skill which you can learn and get better at, just like anything else.

Meditation (sự thiền định) is becoming more available as a holistic (toàn diện) treatment for substance abuse (lạm dụng thuốc). "Go halfsies" nghĩa là gì?

Qủa gì thế? Photo by Weronika Marcińczyk

"Go halfsies" = Chia đều cái gì, chia đều cho cả hai và đặc biệt là chia đều giá trị của cái gì.

Ví dụ
In the mid-2000s, Crew players asked for a hot tub to tend to their aching muscles and ownership said, “Sure, we'll go halfsies.

Dean is pretty vocal about wanting to be nontraditional (remember when he said marriage with Caelynn was “never going to happen”?), so it wouldn’t surprise me if he convinced Caelynn to go halfsies on some kind of unique experience with him. Like...swimming with pigs in the Bahamas.

Ian opted for the Impossible cheesesteak and Latitude 33/Second Chance/Artifex hoppy lager collaboration, while I went for the spicy chicken sandwich and Pizza Port/Regal Seagull collaboration IPA. Beer writers make the perfect drinking buddies because they love to share—going halfsies on everything was more reflex than request.

"Any way you slice it" = dù có mổ xẻ , phân tích nó ra hay nhìn thấy như thế nào, thì...

Ví dụ
So, just about any way you slice it, that’s an impressive offensive (tấn công) season.

Any way you slice it, this style is hot — just make sure to slather on the sunscreen (bôi nhiều kem chống nắng) to avoid funky tan lines (vết sạm da).

Eight years … 96 months … 417 weeks … 2,920 days … two presidential terms (nhiệm kỳ chủ tịch) — any way you slice it, eight years seems like a long time.

This is a robust (sức mạnh) test for Munguia in his middleweight (hạng trung) debut. Some might call O'Sullivan a gatekeeper (người gác cổng), but anyway you slice it, Munguia is going to get a chance to show the boxing world how he fights without having to cut an excessive amount of weight.

"Go from bad to worse" nghĩa là gì?

"Go from bad to worse" = ngày càng xấu hơn, trở nên còn tệ hại hơn (hoàn cảnh không vừa ý...)

Ví dụ
Things go from bad to worse for Louise when Karen approaches her asking to see Peggy and she later confides in Lisa about her difficulties caring for Peggy.

The former Deputy Minister for Education in a statement said, ‘the considerable angst and frustration by large sections of Ghanaians over the Double Track Academic Calendar, I am afraid, would only go from bad to worse if the Akufo-Addo administration does not resolve what I call the Free SHS Enrolment Data Mess.”

Steve said it’s the safest time to crab in the estuary (cửa sông). “There is no reason to be out here on the ebb tide (triều xuống) – that’s the out-going tide and things can go from bad to worse in a heartbeat. It can be the most dangerous part of the tide cycle and this river can change so fast. You just don’t take chances out here.”

"Go for the jugular (cổ, tĩnh mạch cảnh)" = tấn công vào nhược điểm của đối thủ.

Ví dụ
Is this war by accident or war by design? We’ve all said that a major war in the Middle East could start by accident. But no one thought Donald Trump would go for the jugular quite like this. To kill General Qassem Soleimani is a sword at the heart of Iran, without doubt. And on whose behalf?

The US estimates that Jamal’s decapitation (chặt đầu) gives an opening to go for the jugular vein of the Popular Mobilization Committee, which is Iran’s principal instrument for power projection in Iraq. Trump hinted that US intelligence has penetrated (xuyên qua, nhìn thấu) the Iran-backed militia groups (nhóm lực lượng dân quân).

“There was a lot going on there down the stretch,” St. Paul coach Mike Smith said. “They came at us with some pressure, and we hadn’t been pressed a whole lot because I don’t know if there’s a lot of teams that want to speed us up — but they were able to do that. We had a couple sequences to go for the jugular and put the game away and just missed.

"Go for the burn" nghĩa là gì?

Muscle man! Photo by  henri meilhac

"Go for the burn" = Đốt cháy hết -> Ép cơ thể tới mức cực độ khi tập luyện thể dục hoặc vận động.

Ví dụ
Go for the burn on a regular basis. Planking movements practiced continuously for one minute are a great example.

If you go for the burn just to feel like you’ve gotten a good workout, then it’s pointless without an established goal. For example, if your focus is maximum strength gain, then it’s probably a bad idea since these types of sets/reps [intense high-rep training] will drastically cut into your ability to recover and continue working out.

More than just being a classic icon of the 1980s, Jane Fonda’s workouts are surprisingly still fun, easy, and an effective way to get fit. It also leaves us nostalgic (nhớ nhà, nhớ quê hương, hoài niệm) for the days of matching leg warmers and leotards (quần áo nịt), big hair, and Jane Fonda’s peppy voice yelling at us from the TV to “go for the burn!”

"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Monika Grabkowska on Unsplash

"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" = không có bữa ăn trưa nào là miễn phí cả -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không thể có được một cái gì đó mà không phải mất gì cả.

Ví dụ
Local politicians say implementing free fares (tiền xe, tiền vé) is good for the environment and helps low-income riders. It seems like these bureaucrats (quan chức) have never heard of the expression: There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.

The No Free Lunch Theorem (NFLT) is named after the phrase, there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. It has origins in the mid-nineteenth century onwards, whereby bar and saloon (quán rượu) owners would attract drinkers in with free food on the condition that they brought a drink.

You may have heard the phrase “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” perhaps in conversation with your parents when they wanted you to get a job. Its acronym—TANSTAAFL—pops up in subreddits like r/Anarcho_Capitalism, on sweatshirts from the politically inclined website LibertyManiacs.com, and as a nerdy economics rap on YouTube. Also: For the first eight years of the Libertarian Party’s existence, TANSTAAFL was its official slogan.

"Sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Timothy Eberly on Unsplash

"Sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" = tình dục, ma túy và nhạc rock 'n' roll -> cụm từ này dùng để chỉ cho lối sống ngông cuồng, phóng túng, hưởng lạc.

Ví dụ
They were the “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll” of their time, almost inventing the saying. Both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were known for their wild lifestyles.

I’d like to encourage you to make certain you find time to regularly discuss sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll as a family. Ideally, these discussions will be somewhat routine (not necessarily regular, but they should be routine enough that all are comfortable).

Set inside one of Oklahoma City’s oldest and rowdiest (hỗn loạn, rối trật tự) strip clubs during the height of the early '80s oil boom, it's hardly a shocker that the documentary "Red Dog" veritably gushes with outrageous stories involving sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.

Photo by Warren Wong on Unsplash

"Pull/drag (oneself) up by (someone's) (own) bootstraps" = tự dùng sức để vực dậy -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tự mình cố gắng vươn lên, vươn lên bằng nỗ lực bản thân.

Ví dụ
We have these very strong puritanical (khắt khe) roots and the idea that we make our bed, we lie in it, and you pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. It pits people against each other in a way.

Dattner takes electric joy in being in front of an audience, and she makes keen observations about virtue signaling in the era of social media, about how self-love is as neoliberal a concept as “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps,” about how we’re so protective of our own realities that “we make agreements about which conversations we’re going to have.”

It took me a few years to realize this was a childish way to address the chasm (sự cách biệt lớn) that had opened up between myself and my brother, a hardworking, by-the-books conservative who thinks he’s oppressed as a white male, and my dad, a self-proclaimed patriot who adheres to the “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” brand of personal fiscal responsibility.

"Go fight city hall" = Đi chống lại hội đồng thành phố -> Ý nói ngược lại là không thể đánh bại hoặc chống lại quyền lực của quan chức hoặc bộ máy chính quyền.

Ví dụ
“You go fight city hall. You go fight the federal government. If you've got time and money to do that, good luck,” he said.

And once this happens — well, go fight City Hall. As Bklyner also tells us, “According to both Avella and the Hockenjoses, the DOB’s modus operandi when they receive complaints about fraudulent (gian lận, lừa đảo) documents is to wash its hands of the problem and declare it a property dispute to be handled in civil court.”

Our Pheasant Run Restaurant family has serious reservations about the upcoming city project. We are the smallest business, and the business that stands to lose the most during the proposed construction route. He cannot revise the current plans. We cannot afford the proceeds to even put up a very good fight. Everyone knows "you can’t fight city hall." Be aware, we are doing what we can, with what we have.

"Go down with guns firing" nghĩa là gì?

"Go down with guns firing" = Tiếp tục chiến đấu, chống lại ai/cái gì cho đến cùng, cho đến đối thủ chết hoặc thất bại hoàn toàn.

Ví dụ
“I will work hard for the country and go down with guns firing. Now, I hope for sponsors from outside to help me.”

“We gave them the chance to come back into the game with a mistake and, after that, we started to panic (lo sợ) a little. But the players go down with guns firing, they work hard and they have played three games in a week, at Christmas time.

There has been reason to feel a little better about the Patriots offense over the last month, and I think they’ll do enough to get the W this weekend. It won’t be pretty and it will likely be another go down with guns firing, but the Patriots will move on to another giant showdown with the Chiefs in Kansas City.

"Go down that road" nghĩa là gì?

"Go down that road" = Đi xuống đường đó -> Theo đuổi/tiếp tục thực hiện chuỗi hoạt động hoặc quá trình hành động.

Ví dụ
Bill O’Brien was asked about it Monday. He refused to go down that road. Different teams. Different situations.

You want to do something that puts a stake in the ground for the two of you and firmly reminds you that on a particular day, at a particular time, you really did put the affair behind you. Then, in the future when something triggers the thoughts and feelings again, you can tell yourself, “I don’t need to go down that road, we put it behind us.”

While Tehran has ample (nhiều, phong phú) choices, it also has limitations. It will want to avoid triggering an all-out war with the US and its allies (đồng minh). It may now decide to build up a covert nuclear arsenal, no longer bound by the 2015 nuclear deal which Donald Trump walked out of. It would be harder to go down that road in the middle of a firefight. And each act of retribution (sự trừng phạt, báo thù) could use up the political capital Iran has around the world, most importantly backing from Russia and China.

"Go down like ninepins (trò chơi ky chín con)" = Thua, không chống nổi bệnh tật; bị tiêu diệt hoặc chết cùng lúc.

Ví dụ
It was a nightmare (cơn ác mộng) of a match that will haunt Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle for long, where these great batsmen saw their entire batting order go down like ninepins on Sunday.

De Villiers didn’t dismiss Ireland’s recent injury crisis that has seen props go down like ninepins, suggesting there will be no diminution (sự giảm bớt) in Ireland’s effectiveness come scrum time on Saturday evening at the Aviva stadium.

Daadi recalls the day when Abhay's father was thrown out from the house in a similar way. Abhay tells them that he will soon return with evidences and then this family will go down like ninepins. He leaves. Anika tries to change Shivaay's mood by asking him to throw his mobile phone in the swimming pool. She asks him not to take his words to heart. Ví dụ
All runners have to finish their races. It's not like they can run into the parks and go AWOL to secure that first spot in line for their favorite ride.

Tottenham had been negotiating the transfer for weeks and even flew Willian into London to complete his medical and sign the contract – only for the Brazilian to go AWOL.

Cô ấy sợ không gian hẹp. Photo by  Marcus Chen

"Elevator doesn't go to the top floor" = Thang máy không lên tới sân thượng -> Chỉ người có đầu óc bình thường, không thông minh.

Ví dụ
Branco did a nice job painting her portrait (vẽ chân dung). Looks just like her. She said during an interview that she did not know how all her freebees were going to be paid for. She said THEY would work it out. She is dumber than a box of rocks and her elevator doesn’t go to the top floor. What is this country coming to if someone like her, and bernie, can infiltrate (xâm nhập) congress.

These practices are reflected not only in popular books and videos such as the Darwin Awards, People-of-Wal-Mart websites, and Reddit lists of ways to insult (sỉ nhục) the stupid, but in popular speech: “not the sharpest knife in the drawer … elevator doesn’t go to the top floor … dumb as a sack of hammers.” Even as I write these words, I lament (than vãn) at how easily a list of these slogans comes to my mind. I have used all too many of them, aimed at too many people, far too casually.

"Go scot-free" = miễn thuế -> không bị trừng phạt; không bị thiệt hại.

Ví dụ
They said those who violate (vi phạm) the traffic rules go scot free and law abiding people are harassed by the police on the name of new traffic rules.
