Bất ngờ thú vị khi chơi bi-a

khuya muộn chồng mới mò về nhà, vợ hỏi:
- anh đi đâu giờ này mới về?
- đi chọc bi-a chứ đi đâu.

- !!!???

Bài trước: Anh sẽ về

"Drive me back to" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Adam Wilson

"Drive (one) back to (one)" = Thúc ép ai đó quay lại với ai, như với người yêu hoặc vợ chồng cũ.

Ví dụ
She is suffering a lung cancer in the last stage (giai đoạn cuối). So, I just want to drive you back to my daughter, please! Because she really really needs your love.

In the spring of 2015, Karen gave those emails to a WFAA-TV reporter after he contacted her. She hoped the shame and embarrassment would drive him back to her, she said. It was big news when it ran on TV.

Cal coldly rejects Raina, essentially telling her to off herself if she can’t deal with her new form. At the same time, he’s excited to hear about Skye’s change, thinking that her confusion over what’s happened will help drive her back to him. Kyle MacLachlan continues to be a joy to watch, absolutely relishing his role as a scenery chewing mad scientist. I hope we’ll be seeing much more of him in the second half of this season.

"Bad money drives out good" nghĩa là gì?

Tiền của bé từng này thôi. Photo by Guillaume M.

"Bad money drives out good" = đồng tiền xấu đổi đồng tiền tốt -> Đồng tiền giả/xấu làm cho đồng tiền thật biến mất khỏi lưu thông; mọi người sẽ tích trữ tiền thật nếu đồng tiền giả hoặc lạm phát xuất hiện trong lưu thông.

Ví dụ
Gresham’s Law states that bad money drives out good money, but anyone who has spent time around Washington, D.C., knows that this law can safely be applied to information too — bad information tends to drive out good information. Such is the case with America’s assessments of other countries’ military and economic power.

This is the free speech version of Gresham’s Law: “bad money drives out good” (people spend counterfeit money (tiền giả) as quickly as they can so they can get rid of it, so that eventually all the money in circulation is counterfeit). The more complicated speech-policing rules we create to prevent bad speech, the more good speech we’ll catch by accident, and the more really determined bad speech we’ll let through.

In his letter, Klarman cited Gresham’s law: the idea that - all other things being equal - “bad money drives out good.” That is, when there are two forms of money in circulation (sự lưu thông) with the same nominal (có tên, danh nghĩa) value (for instance, paper dollars and gold dollars, as was the case in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries), the lower-value currency (tiền tệ) will gradually displace the higher-value one.

"Do not pass go" nghĩa là gì?

Địa ngục trần gian. Photo by Jez Timms

"Do not pass go" = Đừng di chuyển vượt quá mốc đã được đánh dấu (trong trò chơi Monopoly) = Trực tiếp tống vào tù/ngay lập tức cho đi tù mà không để trì hoãn hay thay đổi kết cục nào cả; trực tiếp nhận hình phạt cao nhất.

Ví dụ
NY Prosecutors Want Paul Manafort to Go to Jail, Go Directly to Jail. Do Not Pass Go. Do Not Get a Presidential Pardon.

He then told the remaining five players that Dan had been removed from the game completely…out of the game, not on the jury (ban giám khảo, ban hội thẩm), do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

A user who described sitting in Gilroy with scared family members wrote: “Choppers overhead as we are sheltered in place in the ACTIVE MANHUNT SEARCH ZONE & YOU CARE ABOUT OPTIMIZING THE ALMIGHTY (sức mạnh, quyền lực tối cao) $? DO NOT PASS GO, JUST GO TO HELL!!”

"Look like a candidate for a pair of wings" nghĩa là gì?

Như con gà rù. Photo by  Sticker Mule

"Look like a candidate for a pair of wings" = Như người đi xin đôi cánh -> Như người sắp chết tới nơi.

Ví dụ
“We look like a candidate for a pair of wings and there’s no sequel (đoạn kế tiếp, sự tiếp theo).” So began Ricky Gervais’s Golden Globes monologue (kịch một vai, độc bạch). It’s his fifth time hosting, as he made repeatedly clear, he would not be hosting again, so this time he would really let the barbs (râu, tơ) fly.

Yeah, I was just reading about some best-selling man who says 'Live your dream to the end' and so on and I don't despise anyone who does, but I don't see it that way. Even if I gained time through the chemotherapy (hóa học trị liệu) it isn't time I want. Because as soon as I knew I look like a candidate for a pair of wings, the goodness went out of life.

Your soul crawls inside of itself and you instantly die of embarrassement. I promptly became a candidate for a pair of wings. If it wasn't already obvious, the story is packed with absurdist (ngớ ngẩn) humour (your best friend falls in love with a pressure cooker and your professor is a dog), and I frequently found myself screenshotting some of the more memorable quotes.

"Yankee go home" nghĩa là gì?

Make America Great Again. Photo by  Gabby Orcutt

"Yankee go home" = Yankee, về nhà!

“Sometimes we would see “Yankee go home” signs when we got in port, and we thought maybe we shouldn’t get off the ship because there might be trouble, but that was the exception,” Heilman remembers.

Then Iraqi lawmakers passed a non-binding bluff “Yankee go home” resolution. Which the Times spun (mệt lử) as a defeat. “The killing of General Soleimani, intended as a shot against Iran, could accelerate an Iranian objective: pushing the United States military out of Iraq.”

Contrary to what most Western media portrays (hình ảnh, mô tả), the Iranian people are very proud of their pre-Islamic heritage (di sản). And, one feature of this heritage was the humanitarian (nhân đạo) approach of the Persian empires (đế chế), as famously expressed in the Cyrus cylinder. Cyrus the Great defeated the imperial bully of his day, Babylon, and allowed exiled peoples to return to their lands. Jews have been forever grateful to Cyrus and Persian people for that. It may be tempting to think that, today, Iran is once again a power that defeats imperial bullies and—when expanding its influence—treats everyone with respect. That is what much of the Latin American Left seems to believe. However, we need a reality check. Iran has committed atrocities (sự độc ác, tàn bạo) in our region, and its influence has been negative. “Yankee, go home!” must never derive into “Persian, come and take us!”.

"To the victor go the spoils" nghĩa là gì?

I'm a Victor. Photo by  Victor Larracuente

"To the victor go the spoils" = Những chiến lợi phẩm về tay kẻ chiến thắng (viết theo văn xuôi phải là "The spoils go to the victor") -> Người thắng cuộc thì được quyền nhận mọi phần thưởng và lợi ích hoặc thành quả của sự thành công.

Ví dụ
“I can certainly understand elections have consequences,” said Sen. Ben Chafin, R-Russell. “And I can understand to the victor go the spoils. What I don’t get is disenfranchising (tước quyền bầu cử) an entire region.”

As for Williamson’s actual introduction, a home debut is preferable. To the victor go the spoils, and the New Orleans Pelicans won the NBA Draft Lottery. The New Orleans fanbase has suffered enough since Anthony Davis made his trade request. David Griffin and Gentry need a bit of goodwill and political capital. Williamson making a road debut would be akin to letting another team’s fanbase unwrap the New Orleans fans’ Christmas present.

More important than deciding who wins and loses the Super Bowl LIV ad war, though, are the lessons for what makes in-game ads effective. To win on Super Sunday, advertisers should concentrate less on the popularity of their ads and instead be laser-focused on driving engagement of their target audiences — both digitally and face-to-face in America's family rooms and sports bars. Here's hoping for an exciting game and engaging ads. To the victor go the spoils!

"Pick up your marbles and go home" nghĩa là gì?

Stop, Please! Photo by Isaiah Rustad

"Pick up your marbles and go home" = Nhặt hết viên bi và đi về nhà -> Bạn tức giận hoặc không hài lòng vì tình huống/hoàn cảnh đang diễn ra nên bạn bỏ đi luôn hoặc từ bỏ không làm nữa. Như kiểu đang chơi bắn bi mà thua hoài nên lấy hết viên bi đem về nhà để không cho bạn tiếp tục chơi nữa đó.

Ví dụ
Chuck, why don’t you pick up your marbles and go home. You are one of the rudest anchors and worst looser I have ever seen. Refuse to watch msnbc because of you and your other cry babies.

We are divided. Our counties, our states, our nation. That doesn’t mean you pick up your marbles and go home. You were elected to do a job. You swore an oath (tuyên thề) to the people of this state and not just the ones lining your re-election coffers (cái két, kho bạc).

“I’m proud we’re a 50-state party this year, and I’m proud we invested more in Wyoming than ever before in a midterm cycle,” said Perez, referring to the six-figure investments made by the party in 2018. “And we’re going to continue. When you’re trying to take a long-term view and trying to reverse trends that are a long time in the making, you can’t just pick up your marbles and go home if you have one cycle where you don’t get to quite where you want to be. That’s the approach we’ve taken across the country.”

"The Greek calends" nghĩa là gì?

"The Greek calends" = lịch Hy Lạp -> nghĩa là không đời nào, sẽ không bao giờ có chuyện đó.

Ví dụ
I think it would be absolutely insane now to say that yet again we have a, you know, a phoney (giả) deadline, it all can be kicked off until - kick the can down the road 'til the Greek calends.

A “No” or a postponement (trì hoãn) of the decision to open negotiations (đàm phán) until the Greek calends shall mean a loss for the Albanians. And any loss faces the winners.

In principle, of course, half the people denouncing (tố cáo) Johnson for advancing Brexit claim that they too want to see Brexit passed; in reality, they are trying to delay it until the Greek calends, which a classical scholar like Boris Johnson would know means “until the day of never.”

"Chew up the scenery" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Kushagra Kevat on Unsplash

"Chew up the scenery" = nhai cảnh vật -> nghĩa là tỏ ra phóng đại, phô trương hoặc xúc động thái quá khi đóng phim, đóng kịch.

Ví dụ
It's a murder mystery modelled (làm mẫu) self-consciously (tự giác) on Agatha Christie's country mansion, sent up in exaggerated (phóng đại) hamming (diễn viên nghiệp dư) from the likes of Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Daniel Craig and Chris Evans all doing their best to chew up the scenery.

In retrospect (hồi tưởng), Season 6 of The Blacklist was truly split in two. The first half of the season — which ended with Episode 12 — injected (tiêm) new energy into the show's formula (công thức). Its focus on Reddington's time in prison gave significant room for James Spader to chew up the scenery and compelling choices for both Liz (Megan Boone) and Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq). Few stretches in the show's history can match those dozen episodes.

A lot of the scenes serve for the actors to chew up the scenery and give some great performances. Al Pacino is the standout (nổi bật) of this film as the brash Jimmy Hoffa. He is an eccentric cult of personality you can’t help but gravitate towards every time he is on screen.
