"Lock, stock and barrel" nghĩa là gì?

I'm ok Photo by Yogendra Singh from Pexels

"Lock, stock and barrel" đây là tên của 3 bộ phận trên một khẩu súng gồm khóa nòng, báng và nòng súng -> hoàn toàn, toàn bộ không sót thứ gì.

Ví dụ
It’s the feeling that next time we’ll catch them acting, next time we’ll see the artifice (sự khéo léo) and the technique rather than being transported lock, stock and barrel into the psyche (tinh thần) of the person they’ve created.

The story goes that while stopping at a gas station one day he met Gustavo Olguin, a Mexican cook selling fritos, an extruded fried corn snack. The idea interested Doolin and seizing the opportunity, he purchased the tiny business lock, stock and barrel, complete with customer list.

Narrow Band IoT Market 2019-2024 report offers a lock stock and barrel worth of the marketplace to make lucid decisions (quyết định sáng suốt). The report begins with an overview of the Narrow Band IoT and its definitions. The market report engulfs idiosyncratic market gauges identified with market size, generation, income, utilization, CAGR, net edge, cost, and furthermore key factors.

"Look daggers at" nghĩa là gì?

"Look daggers (dao găm) at (one)" = nhìn giận dữ, nhìn hầm hầm; nhìn trừng trừng.

Ví dụ
In the stills, Ahn Dan Te and Shin Yeon Hwa look daggers at each other across the meeting room table and fill the room with tension.

“They look daggers at you, and then look sweetly up at the dear little girl in the grandstand (khán đài), and then daggers at you. I mean at me, and by the time they pitch, you, I mean me, are ready to swing at anything.”

In an interview with Mehr News on May 13 the commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said “As long as the naval forces (lực lượng hải quân) of the Islamic Republic are protecting its borders (biên giới), the enemies (quân thù, địch) will never dare to even look daggers at the Iranian nation.”

"Look as if you have seen a ghost" nghĩa là gì?

Có bóng chi đen đen đó? Photo by Monica Silva

"Look as if you have seen a ghost" = Trông như người mới gặp con ma nào -> Nhìn rất kinh khủng, bị shock nặng, mặt mày tái mét vì sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
Edward came home that night. "That is certainly not the face I wish to see when I come home. You look as if you have seen a ghost," He laughed.

I am not sure of the time, but believe it was perhaps just after 9pm. I opened the door and went in, shut the door and stood with my back to it. Someone in the hut said “Christ Jimmy, what’s the matter with you? You look as if you have seen a ghost”.

I am sure that everyone is well aware of the impact NAB has had over the last couple of years. It has struck fear in the hearts of many, so much and so that the second they hear the name NAB or see NAB written on a piece of paper they become silent and look as if they have seen a ghost.

"Look as if butter wouldn't melt in mouth" nghĩa là gì?

"Look as if butter wouldn't melt in (one's) mouth" = Trông như vẻ miếng bơ không tan chảy trong miệng -> làm ra bộ đoan trang, ngây thơ; màu mè

Ví dụ
'Don't be fooled by that English schoolgirl look she had in those days, all angles and planes, no curves and rounds,' Bogarde once told me. 'She looked as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, but she probably grasped the meaning of that kinky stuff better than I did.'

“The thing is, Rachael is posher than me, and very ‘normal’ looking – looks as if butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth,” says Hammond, who is best known for her role as Donna Yates in EastEnders. “Whereas I’m a four-foot woman in a wheelchair. So people make a lot of assumptions about both of us and we can have a lot of fun with that.”

The first was Safeena, the female lead of Gully Boy, played by the incandescent (sáng chói) Alia Bhatt. In the movie, you first see her through the prism (lăng kính) of her hijab (một tấm khăn trùm đầu và ngực). So, even if it is at subliminal (tiềm thức) level, you expect her to portray a traditional Muslim girl who prays five times a day and ends up marrying the man her parents chose for her. But before that thought can even coalesce (liên kết) in your mind, the character springs a surprise on you. She has been in a relationship with a young man in the neighbourhood for years now – conducting her affair with admirable sneakiness and breathtaking chutzpah (sự cả gan trơ tráo), spinning tales even as she looks as if butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.

"Look a picture" nghĩa là gì?

Bắt trọn từng khoảnh khắc. Photo by  W A T A R I

"Look a picture" = Đẹp như tranh -> Rất đẹp, hấp dẫn và lôi cuốn mắt nhìn.

Ví dụ
A wake is to be held at the Royal British Legion Club, Lucknow Street, just by Fratton Bridge. As to the photograph, it looks like it is a steam-driven pump to be used alongside the fire engines. The firemen look a picture, don’t they?

The eye-catching, delicate pom-poms not only look a picture but carry a heavenly fragrance (hương thơm ngát) and provide a valuable nectar (mật hoa) source for friendly garden insects (côn trùng) that emerge in milder (êm dịu, dễ chịu) weather.

The countryside is bursting with vibrancy (sự rung động, tiếng vang) and colours, growth is surging ahead and even the worst fields look a picture at the minute. It's still a long way until harvest, but every field is 'ditch to ditch' with healthy crops, there are no poor or bare patches to be seen and crop potential, as far as we can say at this time of the year, looks to be excellent.

"If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it is a duck" nghĩa là gì?

Vịt bầu sắp hóa thiên nga. Photo by  Tore Skogheim

"If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it is a duck" = Nếu nó trông như vịt và đi như vịt thì nó đúng là con vịt. -> Cái gì có tất cả đặc điểm của một vật/con gì thì đó chính xác là cái mà bạn mô tả bất luận người ta gọi hay mô tả nó là gì.

Ví dụ
If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it is a duck. Right? At Viaggio, though, it doesn’t taste like a duck. The voyage (chuyến du hành) promised by Viaggio’s name is not pleasant, at least when it comes to chef Jon Vettriano (ex-Commodore)’s duck agrodolce (nước sốt chua ngọt của Ý, thường gồm giấm và đường).

Though she no longer holds the title, Acosta believes she still has a loyal following in the district – enough to make a difference when she endorses (xác nhận, tán thành), or in the case of Honkala, when she opposes. Acosta is quoted on her Facebook page as saying of Honkala, “If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it is a duck!”

McNamara contends that the device in Uber cars is a taximeter. He argues that it calculates the fare (tiền vé) by a combination of distance and time "exactly like our meters. If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it is a duck." The LTDA announced this week that it will be launching private prosecutions against Uber drivers on the grounds of the illegality of their meters.

"Word on the street" nghĩa là gì?

Ê, lại đây tao kể cái này hay lắm nè!! Photo by: Ben White on Unsplash

"Word on the street" = lời nói ở trên đường -> nghĩa là thông tin hoặc tin đồn được lan truyền giữa mọi người với nhau.

Ví dụ
Word on the street is that Samsung is about to pull an Apple and mess about with its naming format and skip straight to the S20. Why? Good question. But it looks like it’ll arrive with four cameras on the back in a domino-like arrangement (sắp xếp), an almost entirely bezel-free front, and potentially 5G capabilities as standard (tiêu chuẩn).

So you remember when Payless ShoeSource declared (tuyên bố) Chapter 11 bankrupcy back in 2019? Well now they may be making a comeback. The word on the street is that the company is going to relaunch its e-commerce site and may even reopen some of the stores that they closed last year!

Word on the street was the school could soon be closing. Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsulin came to town to clear that up.

"Don't even look like" nghĩa là gì?

"Don't even look like" = Đừng có tỏ ra vẻ như đang làm, suy nghĩ về hoặc trông giống như cái gì.

Ví dụ
'Everyone feels like they've got to look like the people they see on Instagram. I don't even look like the person I look like on Instagram!'

I still just can't believe that I'm Leslie Jones. That's really weird. I'm telling you, every time I get someone that comes up to me and is going crazy, I'm like, I - you don't even look like you would watch someone like me.

"I don't even look like I'm six years old. I look three, four years old," said Shirey. Shirey appeared on an episode of the Janie and Friends show in the 80’s. Her Girl Scouts Brownie Troop from the south side of Indianapolis were a few of the thousands of children who appeared on the popular cartoon and puppet (con rối) program over its 23-year run on WTTV Channel Four. She was only six, but Shirey remembers it well.

"Be not much to look at" nghĩa là gì?

"Be not much to look at" = Cách nói giảm nói tránh để mô tả ai có vẻ bề ngoài không hấp dẫn và không gây sự chú ý (không đáng để nhìn).

Ví dụ
The Level Lock reaffirmed that for me when I saw it in action here at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. It's not much to look at, and that's the whole point.

“She’s not much to look at,” I would often remark about the 1970 BMW 2500 that Raphael Orlove and I just drove from one coast to another, “but she’s tough as nails.” If you ask me, the best old cars aren’t the perfect garage queens. They’re the ones that can get the job of driving done and are fun to boot.

Jockey Damian Lane said he had convinced connections to bring Mer De Glace to Australia despite it receiving a weight penalty for a win in Japan. "He's not much to look at, but he's just a tradesman, keeps turning up and winning," he told Seven. "Not many horses win five on the bounce in Japan because they're all weight for age races, so they go up steep every time. "I'm just so rapt (sung sướng vô ngần). He has done the job for everyone today."

"Be looking over your shoulder" nghĩa là gì?

"Be looking over (one's) shoulder" = hết sức lo lắng, thận trọng vì nghĩ rằng có điều gì đó nguy hiểm hoặc tồi tệ sắp xảy đến cho mình.

Ví dụ
Sy said she feels like she has to constantly be looking over her shoulder. “It could be one of our roommates, it could be someone in my class” who wrote the message, she said. “It could be anyone.”

“This bill makes it that if you decide to commit evil like this upon our children, that you better be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life,” Plakon, R-Longwood, said Wednesday. “That in itself, I think, is important.”

Upon learning of the Jackal's deception, Punisher turned on his former partner. Due to his cunning, Jackal was able to make it out of there barely alive, although he will likely always be looking over his shoulder to make sure Frank Castle isn't there to finish the job.

"Be looking you in the face" nghĩa là gì?

"Be looking (one) in the face" = Thấy rõ/nhìn rõ trên mặt -> Chỉ điều sắp xảy ra/thành một vấn đề; điều quá rõ ràng nhưng không nhận ra.

Ví dụ
"The shooter could be any one of these people living here. We could be looking him in the face and not even know it," said another resident with clear anxiety in her voice. "Our lives are in jeopardy (cảnh nguy hiểm) here … I need to find somewhere else to live."

How much would you hate being Kardashian’s friend right about now? Seriously, most of us would be looking her in the face and saying, “Look, I love you, but I’m not buying you anymore wedding presents. I’m tired of throwing/attending/purchasing gifts for your showers/weddings. When you’ve been married to the same guy for 10 years, I’ll consider buying you a gift. Plus, don’t you have more money than God? What could you possibly need from anyone else?” Having a bridal shower when you’re as wealthy (and as unskilled at marriage) as Kardashian is, is tacky (tồi tàn, xơ xác) — having more than one is in really poor taste.

"She is not as green as she is cabbage-looking" nghĩa là gì?

"She is not as green as she is cabbage-looking" = Cô ấy không xanh lè/tái mép như cái mặt ngớ ngẩn/mặt bắp cải -> Chỉ ai thông minh hơn và không ngây thơ như vẻ bên ngoài.

Ví dụ
Based on the movie of the same name, perennially (mãi mãi, bất diệt) perky Elle Woods (played by Brooke Potts) is a girl who loves to be pampered and shop for the latest all-pink outfits. But don't let this seemingly ditsy fashionista fool you, this sorority sister (hội chị em nữ sinh) is not as green as she is cabbage-looking and doesn't take "no" for an answer.

A single mother whose child is the product of rape, Jane has done her best with what she has in order to provide for her son. Currently working at a reptile (lớp bò sát) zoo, entertaining kids and other guests, she might be not as green as she is cabbage-looking. But having to raise a son on her own hasn’t allowed her the same privileges in life the other girls have been able to enjoy.

As noted above, while Dylan initially comes across as dim (mơ hồ) and clueless (không manh mối), he’s not actually as green as he is cabbage-looking. We find out when Haley meets back up with him in the last season that Dylan is studying to become a nurse. This is no easy feat (chiến công, kỳ tích), which means assuming Dylan passes and becomes a nurse, there is some serious brainpower (trí thông minh) hiding in his noggin (ca nhỏ).

"First come first served" nghĩa là gì?

"First come first served" = Đến trước được phục vụ trước (thường nhận những thứ ít về số lượng)

Ví dụ
'First come, first served' seems like a reasonable way to go about doing things, right? Well, not if you are competing over a parking lot, it seems, where it's all about survival of the fittest.

The district stresses that registration is first-come, first-served and spaces will be limited. Tuition will cost parents or guardians $100 a student, per month. The first month of tuition is required upon registration to serve as a deposit, district notes indicate.

Last year, DOL announced that the applications would be accepted on a first come, first served basis. That led to the DOL website crashing within minutes of the “opening bell.” This year, to try to eliminate that problem, DOL transitioned to a new platform and announced it would conduct a randomized (ngẫu nhiên) lottery of all applications submitted within the three-day filing window of January 2 to January 4. That lottery took place on January 6, 2020, and on January 8, 2020, DOL published on its website the lottery results and the five assignment groups (A-E).

"Hang up his fiddle when he comes home" nghĩa là gì?

"Hang up (one's) fiddle when (one) comes home" = ra ngoài thì tươi như hoa, về nhà thì mặt sưng mày sỉa -> Ngưng làm việc và khi về nhà/đến làm việc ở công ty của gia đình rất vui mừng, hớn hở và thư giãn.

Ví dụ
She's very formal and good-looking at work, but she sometimes hangs up her fiddle when she comes home.

He likes wearing a suit to go to work everyday, but he's cranky (xộc xệch) and cheerful when he returns home. It's like he hangs up his fiddle when he comes home.

Hangiing up his fiddle when he comes home is true to my brother. He's not always in a good mood to work at the current company. It comes as no surprise that he will come into our family soon.

"If it comes to the crunch" nghĩa là gì?

"If/when it comes to the crunch (tiếng kêu răng rắc)" = Khi đến lúc phải quyết định, ra tay thực hiện (nước đã tới chân/vào thời khắc quan trọng).

Ví dụ
In the face of rising tensions with the United States and China, sports stadiums might become the same. American companies may ideally wish to keep everybody onside, but if it comes to the crunch they’ll go with their biggest market over their second-biggest.

The BCCI was the first to object to the plan, and BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said to the Indian Express: “We are seriously going to oppose their (new) governance structure, business model and future tours programme. If it comes to the crunch, then I don’t see the BCCI signing the Members Participation Agreement.”

As the story progresses it becomes difficult to discern just which of the two is the bigger threat to the other. And it’s only in conclusion we realise it is neither. Because John has an epiphany (sự hiển linh, thấu tỏ) about choice he decides to take a different path, but this only comes courtesy of the decision made by Tim himself and so he follows his example. Much as the unfolding drama blurs the line as to which is the more honourable protagonist (vai chính) it also makes it difficult to decide which has made the right choice, if it could even be said that either of them has managed to do so. Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, if it comes to the crunch it is still up in the air as to who will be the victor in a clash between the two. And I may be mistaken but in saving Tim’s life using the flesh of the Shahmaran…didn’t he also just imbue (thấm đẫm) him with mystical wisdom..? Food for thought (điều phải cân nhắc).

"Misfortunes never come alone" nghĩa là gì?

"Misfortunes never come alone" = Họa vô đơn chí -> Thường thì nhiều tai họa hoặc điều tồi tệ xảy ra cùng một lúc, nó đến với nhiều người nhiều cảnh khác nhau.

Ví dụ
It is stated that there is an old Sicilian proverb to the effect that “misfortunes never come alone”. There are two First-Class cricketers who have gone through two heart-breaking moments in the same First-Class match, and who would vouch (xác nhận, bảo đảm) whole-heartedly for this sentiment.

Past few months have been months to forget for the Indian economy. The rupee became the worst-performing currency in Asia this month, and Q1 GDP at 5 per cent fell to a 6 year low. The collapse of the automobile sector, trade wars between US and China, rising number of NPAs and sluggish consumer demand along with a failing manufacturing sector have attacked together, staying true to the adage ‘misfortunes never come alone.’ This growth recession was compounded further by the previous Union Budget’s decision to put heavy taxation charges on FPIs, which led them to withdraw their investments from the market. The current situation has made it important to answer the question that is there a need to rejig (trang bị lại, sắp đặt lại) the Indian economy and identify the sector where the next wave of growth will come from?

"The curtain comes down on" nghĩa là gì?

"The curtain comes down on" = Bức màn được kéo xuống/vén màn -> Kết thúc điều gì.

Ví dụ
As the curtain comes down on another decade, it is time to reflect on the 10 years that have gone past and look forward to the opportunities the new decade presents.

There's still plenty to play for as the curtain comes down on the 2019 NFL regular season Sunday, with a number of teams still fighting for improved seeding or their postseason status.

And, as the curtain comes down on Snow White, Glinda, and King Louis, we have Janiak's signature over-wrought/over-writ recap of the event. By Janiak's account ("It's bye-bye for Babylon"), Tammy Nelson's closing rendition (sự diễn xuất) of the Patsy Cline song, "Crazy," was especially moving. Nelson, Janiak wrote, "got so lost in the loogie-hocking of a caricatured (biếm họa, châm biếm) French accent that she seemed to dislocate her jaw or, later, suck one of her eyeballs out of its socket (hốc mắt) and into her sinuses (các xoang)."

NEVER GIVE UP! Photo by Nathalie Désirée Mottet

"When two Fridays come together" = Khi một ngày có tới hai thứ sáu -> Cách nói phóng đại và châm biếm về "NEVER" không bao giờ xảy ra.

Ví dụ
Maris: When will you get remarried (tái hôn), Sarah?
Sarah: Maybe when two Fridays come together!

Don't ever ask her to help you. She's very lazy and she just helps you when two Fridays come together.

I know when two Fridays come together,  I have still been waiting for her even though she's gone far away.

"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb" nghĩa là gì?

"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb" = Tháng Ba đến như một con sư tử và đi như một chú cừu non -> Ý nói lúc bắt đầu tháng 3 thì thời tiết rất lạnh và khó chịu nhưng khi hết tháng thì thời tiết dễ chịu và thích hơn.

Ví dụ
Last month fit right into the old weather lore of, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” A new record low of – 18.1 C was set on the third day, setting the stage for a month that, as-a-whole, wound up being two degrees colder than the average.

I'm sure that many are familiar with the proverb "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." Certainly this is a commentary on the weather, although we could also say there is some astronomical connotation (ý nghĩa thuộc thiên văn) to this adage (ngạn ngữ) as well.

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but as a saying, that doesn’t quite jibe (phù hợp) with me. It’s sort of like “money can’t buy happiness,” when a Cadbury Creme Egg only costs 59 cents (plus tax) — that’s not only happiness — it’s happiness with a creamy fondant (kẹo mềm) middle.

What I love about weather lore (toàn bộ hiểu biết về) is that our ancestors (tổ tiên) were so good at contradicting themselves, as long as they could make it rhyme. Thus, the famous saying “March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb” is sometimes reversed, so that “March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion”.

"Johnnie-come-lately" nghĩa là gì?

"Johnnie-come-lately" = Johnnie mới đến -> Chỉ người/cái gì rất mới cho vị trí nào đó; như người mới gia nhập hoặc tham gia (newbie).

Ví dụ
But they were the johnnie-come-lately brigade (lữ đoàn) following the paths of the town animals making their daily trek up to the south muir of the town to spend the daylight hours grazing the fields before returning at night.

The Leopards need you the fan in the stadium cheering them through thick and thin, through Gor Mahia hooligans and sore losers, and through all this Johnnie come lately outfits who think they can supplant (thay thế, chiếm chỗ) Ingwe as the glamour club of Kenya.

In this rational, balanced and insightful piece, Glenn Silverman, CIO for an independent financial services group and long-time student of BRICS, unpacks the current strengths and weaknesses of the economic alliance (khối liên minh kinh tế). There are some telling markers when it comes to the johnnie-come-lately member of the alliance, balanced by several important areas where we outperform our allies (làm tốt hơn các nước đồng minh của chúng ta).

"Come-hither look" nghĩa là gì?

"Come-hither look" = Cái nhìn hãy đến đây với "ém" -> Cái nhìn đầy quyến rũ/bí ẩn, đầy nhục cảm và tính ve vãn của phụ nữ.

Ví dụ
Lily Adrianne wants to know if someone will swing with her. The Instagram model recently took to the social media platform wearing nothing but a velvet bikini and a come-hither look on her face.

On the one hand, this photo of Vanessa Morgan seems like a strange fit for a list like this one as every inch of her body below the neck is covered. However, there is something about the come hither look in her eyes here that we can’t and don't want to look away from.

The 38-year-old is due any day now with a son by her French singer boyfriend Matt Pokora, 34, but that didn’t stop her from modeling a super-short white mini-dress. She struck a sultry pose (tạo dáng đầy nhục cảm) with one hand on her hip and running her other hand through her hair atop her head in the first photo, giving the camera a come hither look. Even though her bump is so big that her belly button has popped, as it could be seen through the fabric (khăn mặt, kết cấu).

"Come up to expectations" nghĩa là gì?

"Come up to (one's) expectations" = Chỉ mọi việc diễn ra tốt đẹp như mình mong đợi và dự đoán.

Ví dụ
Ms Ardern said she made the decision to remove Ms Curran from the Cabinet because she had not come up to her expectations as a minister.

When contacted regarding this matter on Friday, a senior DGCA official responded, "On the specific issue of simulator training, we have made our stand clear and shall have it and that too in India under our eyes." On the other conversations among Boeing executives, the official told PTI, "We respect his views and shall improve to come up to expectations."

Eminem dropped his surprise album, Kamakaze, in which Em was basically laying out his opinions on mumble rap as well as on his previous album which did not come up to his expectations. Eminem got a huge backlash for his album Revival which was shocking for the 8-Mile starrer, and he also mentioned in his 2018 that the failure hurt him like hell. The MC raps, "Lil Pump, Lil Xan imitate Lil Wayne/I should aim at everybody in the game, pick a name. I heard your mumbling but it's jumbled in mumbo-jumbo/The era that I'm from will pummel you/That's what it's comin' to.” Here's an interview where the rapper is elaborating about his album, Kamikaze.

"Come up with the rations" nghĩa là gì?

"Come up (be given) with the rations (khẩu phần)" = Từ lóng (quân đội) nghĩa là được trao tặng giải thưởng (huân chương) một cách tự động, không xứng đáng và không công bằng, không có công lao nhưng mà vẫn được trao tặng.

Ví dụ
Of all the women agents who risked their lives in Nazi-occupied Europe in the second world war, Polish-born Krystyna must surely rate as one of the bravest of the brave. As they used to say in army vernacular (biệt ngữ quân đội), the George Medal (which was about as close to a VC as a foreign national could get), the OBE and the Croix de Guerre did not exactly ‘come up with the rations’.

It is not really about the men. There is no reason to think that men’s cricket is ‘better’ than women’s sport. Men are bigger, heavier and faster than women. But it is not as though men do anything special in their life to become physically stronger than women. The average male couch potato is bigger, heavier and probably stronger than the average female couch potato. Given how society is organised, bigger, more powerful, bodies simply come up with the rations for men, don’t they?
