"Put out on the street" nghĩa là gì?

"Put out on the street" = Tống ra ngoài đường (vô gia cư), loan báo/rải thông tin cho tất cả mọi người biết.

Ví dụ
Brendan Howlin said that renters were needed too, along with regulations “to make sure that people are not put out on the street”.

That’s so the paper can be put out on the street ahead of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and not require our paper carriers to work those days. So, hopefully, you got your two papers sometime between Dec. 23 and 27 and again Dec. 30 Jan. 3.

Patients were put out on the street before they were medically stable. They were medicated by incompetent (kém cỏi) and unqualified staff. Minors underwent surgery without parental consent (sự đồng ý, chấp thuận). Last year, a patient was forced to undergo an unplanned hysterectomy (thủ thuật cắt bỏ tử cung). Due to medical incompetence, she has lost the choice ever to have a child.

"Put yourself in my place" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (oneself) in (one's) place" = Thử đặt chính mình vào vị trí/tình huống của ai đó.

Ví dụ
“Put yourself in my place… would you want someone to leave your child laying in the road, not knowing if they’re going to live or they’re going to die?” she asked. “Could you live with that? I couldn’t… Do the right thing and turn yourself in.”

"There is a void that is agonizing, intense, empty, so black and there is absolutely nothing that can fill this void," she said. "I ask you to put yourself in my place. What if this had happened to you? What do you think the effect would be on your family?"

There was that synergy (hiệp trợ, đồng vận) between them that blended well. Holman: “I saw that he put himself in my place. I am pleased to release the album.” Holman recalls his spending much time to write the lyrics for Sweet Island Memories, before sharing it with Winsford Devine, the guru of Calypso writing.

"Put my seal to" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one's) seal to" = Đóng con dấu lên/ký chữ ký riêng để chứng thực hoặc đồng ý việc gì.

Ví dụ
“If the panel did not find the allegations against Achuba proved, it means that the purported swearing-in of the new deputy governor is an illegality. Why will the chief judge put his seal to an illegality?”

One day perhaps soon, someone will be asking Antonucci about the fateful day – it may be FBI Special Agent Brian Burns – who has his eye on Niagara Falls corruption – about the day she was ordered to put her seal to a crooked up document and she protested.

In 1215, England's King John put his seal to Magna Carta ("the Great Charter") at Runnymede. In 1520, Pope Leo X issued a papal bull in which he threatened to excommunicate (bị rút phép thông công) Martin Luther if he did not recant his religious beliefs, a threat that was carried out the following January.

"Put your oar in" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one's) oar in" = Cứ thích can thiệp/xía mũi vào chuyện người khác; tự nói ý kiến của mình trong khi người ta không hỏi.

Ví dụ
Obama's decision to put his oar in four years ago, whether from a place of friendship or manipulation (sự vận động, thao túng) on Clinton's behalf, extended to telling Biden not to get out over his skis.

“The expectation in Quebec is that the prime minister should have put his oar in. He should have said this is a great company with a proud history in Montreal. You guys are pushing it too much. Let’s be more like the Americans and the Brits and be a little bit less silly about it.”

So I'm not arguing against Confederation, or for it. You work with what you've got, and this one turned out reasonably well. But it's an ongoing project, whatever you make of the myths about its origin. You can't control the past. You can't control the present either but at least that's where you get to put your oar in. The point isn't to celebrate Confederation, so much as to explore and develop its possibilities.

Chúng ta có hạnh phúc không?

shared from fb Ngo Kim Thoa,
-----
Khi xem xong bộ phim “A star is born”, có một câu hát cứ nhớ mãi trong đầu tôi:
"Tell me something, girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there something else you're searching for?

"Wend your way" nghĩa là gì?

Đã bao giờ bạn nghĩ về những rác thải này sẽ đi về đâu? Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

"Wend one's way" -> đi về một hướng, bước đi về phía.

Ví dụ
Last but not least, click on that enticing (hấp dẫn) "Claim now" button on the Twitch Prime site and your rewards will magically wend their way over to your game.

The title refers to the insects that wend their way into the narrative (câu chuyện), or, at least, into the characters’ increasingly intense perceptions (nhận thức mãnh liệt) of their own story.

Less than 4 seconds remained after Brown’s swish (lao vun vút), and Oak Grove junior guard Jay Barnes couldn’t wend his way through a ferocious (hung dữ) Hattiesburg defense in time to get the ball close enough to attempt a shot.

Did you know that the average person uses a typical plastic bag for as short a time as 12 minutes before throwing it away, never thinking where it may end up? Well, it either ends up in a landfill where it will remain (tồn tại) for thousands of years, or it will wend its way through storm drains and make its way into rivers and streams that feed our worlds’ oceans.

"Wangle your way into" nghĩa là gì?

"Hay anh em mình vượt rào vô?". Photo by bennett tobias on Unsplash

"Wangle (one's) way into (some place or some situation)" có từ "wangle" là mưu mô, thủ đoạn, mánh khóe -> xoay xở để đạt được mục đích (bằng cách khéo léo, thông minh hoặc dùng mánh khóe).

Ví dụ
The restaurant is for members, but commoners (người thường) can wangle their way in; politely emailing current performers often works, as does accompanying a member.

Even though Dijakovic picked up the win here, I don’t see this being a cut and dried (kết quả rõ ràng, dễ thấy), mano-a-mano (đối đầu) fight for TakeOver Portland. Instead, I see Priest managing to wangle his way into the match, setting up a triple threat for Lee’s title that could very easily steal the show.

Back in the day, money used to be a rare commodity, obliging one to wangle your way inside the stadium – I would wait at the gate for Tigers’ squad members to arrive at the field on foot and would beg Buti Nandos to help him carry his makeshift (thay thế tạm thời) tog-bag, a torn plastic bag containing his worn out Adidas pair of togs (quần áo) just to gain free entry into the stadium.

"Put money on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one's) money on (someone or something)" = Đặt cược/cá cược tiền vào ai/việc gì -> Dự đoán ai sẽ hoàn thành/giành chiến thắng; dự đoán điều gì sẽ chắc chắn xảy ra.

Ví dụ
“I’m just going to go to my buddy's house, drink some beers, watch the game and put my money on the chiefs because they're going to win,” said Shawn Carman, a Chief’s fan.

Christian, Paige, and Renee also shared their choices with Christian choosing Brock Lesnar and Shayna Baszler, Paige going with Otis and Kairi Sane, while Renee Young put her money on Drew McIntyre.

If Michael Bisping were a betting man, he’d put his money on Amanda Nunes defeating Henry Cejudo. Nunes and Cejudo are UFC “champ-champs.” Nunes holds women’s featherweight (hạng lông) and bantamweight (hạng gà) gold, while Cejudo reigns as the bantamweight and flyweight (hạng ruồi) king. Recently, “Triple C” joked about facing Nunes in a bid for her titles.

"Put my mind at rest" nghĩa là gì?

Khoảng trời bình yên. Photo by  Jevgenij Voronov

"Put (one's) mind at rest" = Để tâm trí nghỉ ngơi/bình yên -> Loại bỏ những điều mệt mỏi, lo lắng và cả sự sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
“You move small to work muscles you never knew you had and also move big to flush those muscles,” Concolino said. “The end of every class you focus on breathing in order to put your mind at rest and leave feeling refreshed.”

My brother and sister may also have inherited these faulty genes from our parents – and they too could pass the mutation (đột biến) on to their children. I’m not prone (dễ xảy ra, thiên về) to worrying unduly about my health, but my counselling session didn’t really put my mind at rest. So I called Professor Martin Marshall, chairman of the Royal College of GPs.

The worst thing that can happen is someone tells you to go. It can’t get any worse from there. So the best thing for Stendel was to be up front. Give Berra a reason to put his mind at rest a bit. Stendel could have said, ‘Look Christophe, it’s a difficult situation, but I’ve got to put a team together to get us out of this shambolic situation (hỗn loạn, tình huống lộn xộn) we’re in.

"Put your hands together for" nghĩa là gì?

Please put your hands for Miss New York. Photo by Vonecia Carswell

"Put (one's) hands together for" = Chạm tay lại với nhau -> Vỗ tay, hoan hô ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
“Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the most iconic British acts ever to step on stage.”

Put your hands together for this story! Sunday was the 6th annual Valley's Got Talent competition in Steubenville. More than 20 competitors battled it out on the stage in the Steubenville High School Auditorium Sunday evening.

My team was putting me in an impossible position as a woman, as a mother, as a human being. I was being asked to trust that they knew best. I was being asked to return to the stadium and put my hands together for a young man whose alleged actions stand in direct opposition to one of my most closely held convictions: that alleged victims are to be believed.

"Put foot to the floor" nghĩa là gì?

Chạy ngay đi! Photo by EricThriller

"Put (one's) foot to the floor" = đạp lút chân ga (chạm sàn) -> Lái xe/di chuyển rất nhanh; dành hết sức lực và nhiệt huyết làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
“Once we see the gun, I just … there’s just no questions. I just put my foot to the floor and just tried to get away. Then you hear the gunshot go off.”

Envoi Allen jumped fluently for the most part – and turning into the straight, Russell put his foot to the floor and soon had most of the others in trouble. On the run to the last, Abacadabras emerged as the chief threat – and Elliott had repeatedly stated prior to the race that of the two Abacadabras might be the quicker horse.

Jaguar engineers put a premium on eliminating what has been called “the stumps in the swamp,” the many odd and often unpleasant sounds that can emerge from under the hood of an electric vehicle – the ticks, pops, whines and whirs of mechanical and electrical systems normally covered up by the road of an internal combustion engine (động cơ đốt trong). Under all but the most aggressive acceleration, the I-Pace is almost eerily quiet, but put foot to the floor and you might think you’re piloting the Millennium Falcon. Jaguar also has integrated into I-Pace an active noise system that lets you tune precisely what sounds you get.

"Put your back into" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one's) back into" = Miệt mài làm việc gì, đem hết nhiệt tình ra làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
‘He’s got the backing of Major Tim Breitmeyer, who’s just stepped down as president of the Country Landowners’ Association. Their argument is that, since he was appointed in 2017, he’s really put his back into the role and been a very good Colonel.’

The beauty of electronic bicycles is that you can work as hard or a little as you like. Sure, if you are coasting into work in the morning and you don't want to work up a sweat you can switch the power to its highest level and take it easy without reducing yourself to moving along at a snail's pace. However, if the weekend rolls around and you want to burn some calories, you can reduce the amount of work the electrical motor does and really put your back into it. This flexibility (tính linh hoạt) is one of the great things about owning an e-bike.

My job is to ramble through as much of a menu like this as I can, and I do put my back into it. But sometimes you need to step back from such an experience and work out what it’s for. Over the years the McKellars have run businesses built around the special occasion; restaurants where milestones are marked and devotion (sự cống hiến, hết lòng) is proved. The Flint House is not one of those. It’s about a couple of satisfying dishes, rather than the works. It’s a restaurant that makes its point one dish at a time so that what could seem at first to be just a nice enough lunch or dinner, turns out to have been rather more than that. And every town really could do with a place like that.

Xin em chớ có bồn chồn

Copy từ bs. Nguyen Lan Hieu:

Virus kích thước khá to

"Put you wise" nghĩa là gì?

Tâm sự mỏng. Photo by Natalie Parham

"Put (one) wise" = Nạp thông tin/sự khôn ngoan cho ai -> Nói/thông báo cho ai điều/việc quan trọng mà họ không biết hoặc không chú ý tới.

Ví dụ
You might not be aware of this—I wasn’t, but a fellow mom-friend put me wise—but you get a discount on your Kindle if you’re willing to tolerate ads.

Listen, why don't you, while the guy tries to put you wise. Like on drinking. "Don't drink during the day," he advises. "I only drink after midnight.".

If you can’t see that streetwear and street art are inextricably intertwined (được bện rất chặt chẽ, không thể gỡ được), let me put you wise. Both mediums act as a telling reflection of the cultures that they spring from. They’re the lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung cho một số dân tộc) of the skaters, stoners, hustlers, ballers, and rhymers who make neighborhoods tick.

"Put up against" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (someone) up against (someone)" = Để/sắp xếp ai chống lại, thi đấu và cạnh tranh với ai.

Ví dụ
''Put her up against the top graduates of the top business schools or chief executives of the Fortune 500 and, assuming an even start with the same resources, she'd run rings around them,'' Buffett said in 1984, according to the New York Times.

"The only way to find out how good she is is to put her up against better company." Snowden indicated two-year-old rookie colt Rulership would most likely make his debut at Randwick on Saturday rather than in the Blue Diamond Preview (colts) at Caulfield on Saturday.

“Taylor is a really talented swimmer, and she works hard for everything she has,” Schraven said. “With her training, I would put her up against any girl in this area. What we’ve been trying to do is get her competition results to be at the same level as her training. Last year, it just didn’t happen for her in her (individual) events at WPIALs, and she was frustrated and disappointed. But she’s back swimming at a high level this year, and I’m confident she will keep getting better.”

"Happy hunting ground" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Derek Malou on Unsplash

"Happy hunting ground" = nơi săn bắn lý tưởng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là xã hội không tưởng; thiên đường; nơi ai đó có thể đạt ước muốn của mình mà không bị bất cứ rào cản nào.

Ví dụ
Grantham has been a happy hunting ground for the Bucks of late, with Saturday’s victory a fifth consecutive (liên tiếp) success in the fixture.

Munich has been a happy hunting ground for Singapore's shooters, and on Saturday Adele Tan celebrated a gold medal in women's 10m air rifle (súng hơi) at the H&N Cup, setting a national mark in the process.

For all the difficulties that a team like Burnley tend to pose for Arsenal this part of Lancashire has generally proven to be a happy hunting ground for the Gunners. You wouldn't know it to hear Mikel Arteta describe Turf Moor.

England is quickly becoming a happy hunting ground for the Silver Ferns. Six months after snapping a 16-year World Cup title drought in Liverpool last year, the new-look Ferns took out the Nations Cup final 67-56 against Jamaica in London on Monday (NZ time).

"Put on the griddle" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one) on the griddle" = Đặt ai lên vỉ nướng -> Chỉ trích/phê bình ai rất khắc nghiệt.

Ví dụ
Practically every day, Trump attacks Strzok on Twitter, depicting his role in the Russia probe as proof it was a “Witch Hunt” from the get-go. Last week, Republican officials from the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee questioned Strzok—pronounced “Struck”—for more than eleven hours in a private session. And on Thursday, the Republican members of the two committees sought to put him on the griddle before the cameras in a joint hearing, only to discover that messing with G-men can be dangerous. It was they and their President who got burned.

The confrontations (sự chạm trán, đương đầu) came in waves. Harris, who surged in the polls by aggressively taking on Biden in June’s debate, found herself at the other end of the sword. From the start, she was hit from all sides, particularly on her version of Medicare-for-all, which would allow participants to buy private insurance plans, as they can now under Medicare Advantage. She was criticized by Biden for the costs of her proposal and by other rivals for creating a system that would still allow private insurance companies to profit. Later, her record as California’s attorney general was put on the griddle.

"Happy accident" nghĩa là một sai lầm hoặc sự kiện ngoài ý muốn nhưng dẫn đến một kết quả có lợi hoặc bất ngờ thú vị.

Ví dụ
The color trends coincide (trùng khớp, giống) with Pantone’s color of the year, Classic Blue, which Moers says was “a happy accident” which proves their prediction is right.

Fashion, art, and design space 10 Corso Como and Magnum Photos present an exhibition of Bruce Gilden’s early New York street photography from the mid-1970s and ’80s, as well as his more recent fashion images. The show is the result of a happy accident: the rediscovery of some 2,000 rolls of 35mm film from Gilden’s early days in New York City.

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie says his action-comedy “The Gentlemen” represents an opportunity to examine class culture of society. “After finishing work on a film, you tend to move on to the next one, but when I watched the trailer for ‘The Gentlemen’, I was reminded how impressive our cast is, and that it was a happy accident how these chaps all came together,” Ritchie said.

"Put (one) on (one's) guard" = Luôn đề phòng và cảnh giác.

Ví dụ
Be aware of any cold-callers, says a Santander spokesperson. “They might say they’re from your bank, HMRC, a telecoms company or even the police, and they can sound very professional and official – but a call out of the blue should immediately put you on your guard.”

I deploy a three-strike rule when listening to pitches. After hearing any three of the "red herring" statements below, I throw in the towel and wrap up the meeting. (A "red herring," in investor parlance (cách nói, lối nói), refers to something that distracts investors from the key message). While most investors I know do the same, they don't necessary wait for three. Here are six examples of statements that automatically put me on my guard.

The movie Wolf Creek is based on the murderous deeds of serial killer (kẻ giết người hàng loạt) Ivan Milat - who murdered seven backpackers (người đi phượt, du lịch bụi), including British women Joanne Walters and Carole Clarke - as well as Bradley Murdoch, who killed British traveller Peter Falconio. In Natalie’s case, she and her boyfriend escaped without harm, but her experience in the loneliness of the outback, she admits, has put her on her guard.

The homebuilding market, for one, closely mirrors the broader construction business: It has recouped (bù đắp) plenty of losses from the recession (tình trạng suy thoái) but remains a long way from its fat-and-happy days.

I have often wondered why Democrats sell their soul for illegal immigrants. Now it is census  (sự điều tra dân số) time and they are begging illegal immigrants to fill out census forms. I have news for you, illegal immigrants prefer to live under the radar and will not fill out census forms. As long as they have free education, free healthcare and welfare, they are fat and happy.

"Put (one) on (one's) mettle" = Thử thách lòng dũng cảm/khí phách của ai.

Ví dụ
It put her on her mettle. All her life she was an independent woman, writing and injecting her own material into shows before women did that kind of thing.

"There's always something that does come along though to put you on your mettle. Last year, for the first time, we had a problem with Pearlwort. Not sure where it originated, but it might have come in via birds or footwear. It's a weed that's very difficult to see, a tufted little blighter that looks pretty much like a small fescue grass (cỏ đuôi trâu) to the naked eye. Even its little white flowers are hardly discernable. It popped up everywhere, on Centre and Number One courts and the club courts. It's things like this that keep you on your toes."

“What I try to do is get the very best out of every boy who becomes a member of the Crimson Tide team. I try to impress upon boys that I am fair and square with them; I never try to appeal to their sentiment, I never ask a boy to try to win a game for my sake, but on the other hand put him on his mettle to do his level best, and failing he feels the discomfort of not having done his duty, measuring up to the best that is in him. A coach gets or fails to get results on account of his ability to handle boys; he must inspire them with confidence and enthusiasm, which is far more important than his technical training.”
