"Couldn't lie straight in bed" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Úrsula Madariaga on Unsplash

"Couldn't lie straight in bed" = không thể ngả lưng thoải mái trên giường được -> nghĩa là không trung thực, lừa đối; ý là 'không thể ăn no ngủ kỹ' đó các bạn...

Ví dụ
The Republicans have explicitly (dứt khoát) labelled (liệt vào) Schiff as compulsively untruthful, a man who couldn’t lie straight in bed and who is probably lying when his lips aren’t moving and certainly is when they are.

This guy couldn’t lie straight in bed man! But to be a good liar, you need to be clever. They cannot even remember what they have lied about now, that they are spewing (khạc nhổ) so much out. There have been so many contradictions (mâu thuẫn) this summer that they have proven themselves as liars again and again.

But it's not a surprise, is it? Because these clowns couldn't lie straight in bed. Of course they'd ignore (phớt lờ) professional advice about the true reason for the blackouts in favour of tilting at windmills (đánh nhau với cối xay gió).

"Put a plug in" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a plug in (for something or someone)" = Cắm phích điện cho ai/cái gì -> Lớn tiếng/phát biểu xác nhận, tán thành chất lượng được quảng cáo (của món hàng...), quảng cáo, tán thành về ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
He also joked that he was going to “put a plug in” for Lahinch golf club where he is an overseas life member.

While this column is meant to gather food stories from the Flathead, I couldn’t help but put a plug in for the Arlee Community Development Corporation’s (Arlee CDC) search for a Food Sovereignty Coordinator. And honestly, when this passionate foodie is found, I’ll personally be excited to collaborate. It is always easier to grow a food movement with more people at the table!

We’ve discussed from time-to-time about earmarking some of that money and using it for projects or start getting set for strategic planning for the future, but I think the consensus (đồng lòng, nhất trí) last night (Tuesday) talking to two or three aldermen (uỷ viên hội đồng thành phố, uỷ viên hội đồng khu ở Anh); Ryan Mayhew, I want to put a plug in for him. He’s the finance chair and he does a great, fantastic job. He’s really instrumental in a lot of the success we’ve had this year. He was feeling, I think, that we would just put that money in the general fund and allocate it as we need it. That’s probably the easiest way to go. It’s going to be helpful, obviously, but I think the key was just the mere fact department heads really just hung tight with Crystal and the comptrollers (người kiểm soát, kiểm tra) and the budgets.

"Put a new complexion on" nghĩa là gì?

Không ổn. Photo by Azamat Kinzhitayev

"Put a new complexion on (something)" = Thay đổi/làm mới cục diện, diện mạo, tính chất hoặc hình thái của cái gì.

Ví dụ
The most dramatic set of rule changes for 20 years will put a new complexion on how teams tackle a race weekend.

Events moments after the break put a new complexion on the game and Birmimgham took full advantage of the good fortune they were handed.

Eventually, the US decided to act, invading (xâm lược) Panama in 1989 and overthrowing Noriega. His successor, Guillermo Endara, a civilian and lawyer, put a new complexion on Panama's international image. But accusations that the country's financial system permitted money-laundering, fraud and international tax evasion (trốn thuế) have persisted.

Hướng tới nền kinh tế ít carbon

ngành thứ 2 anh ấy đập tiếp là năng lượng hóa thạch nhé (anyway, cái này khó nói, hì...);
:) #secretempires

"Put a name to" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a name to" = Biết/nhớ tên của ai/cái gì được gọi như thế nào; gọi lại tên của ai/cái gì (thường được dùng ở thể phủ định).

Ví dụ
Something is causing a crawling issue, but even Google can’t put a name to it.

"I sort of recognized him but couldn't put a name to his face. In the end Tim had to remind me that he was my science teacher at secondary school!

“We’ve been trying to put a name to it– when you hear it you know what it is!” offers Spesh. “It definitely comes under the banner of folk – jazzy rootsy folk, with a bit of polka too; it’s a sort of Parisienne street café sound… On our website we’ve gone for ‘trans-European roots music’.”

"Put a hit out on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a hit (out) on (one)" = Đánh ai một cú thật mạnh -> Ám sát ai.

Ví dụ
Police allege Leigh-Jones also believed an outlaw motorcycle gang had made threats to his life and Gargasoulas had put a hit out on him.

For Harley Quinn and the rest of the birds, Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain, the general gist is that they all come together to fight against the tyranny of Roman Sionis, AKA the Black Mask. The mob boss (thủ lĩnh, đầu sỏ băng nhóm tội phạm) of the Gotham City underworld has put a hit out on Cassandra and it’s up to the group to form up in their own unique way and smash the mask to dust.

Here’s the synopsis (bản tóm tắt): The Colombian cartel never expected the single most dangerous threat to their drug smuggling operation (hoạt động buôn ma túy) to be a decorated police dog. When man’s best friend becomes the Gulf Clan’s enemy #1, they put a hit out on her life and kidnap (bắt cóc) Sombra. Her handler must beat the odds to rescue his beloved companion from the clutches of Colombia’s most notorious criminal organization (tổ chức/băng nhóm tội phạm khét tiếng).

"Put a good face on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a good face on" = tô son điểm phấn cho một vấn đề; vui vẻ chịu đựng một việc gì; can đảm chịu đựng (đương đầu với) cái gì.

Ví dụ
I think even a lot of his sense of humor is about him just sort of wanting to be liked and accepted and put a good face on things. This is stressful.

Ever the professional, Brind'Amour got to work and put a good face on things. At his introductory media scrum (cuộc ẩu đả, hỗn độn), he smiled, "Hopefully I can just help a little bit, contribute whatever way and maybe put them over the hump a little bit and get them back into the playoff picture."

Several other managers secretly shared Morgan’s doubts, but no one came to her aid when the CEO looked irritated. Six weeks later, it surprised none of the other managers to receive an email notifying them that Morgan had left the company. It did worry these managers when the CEO’s initiative failed. Nevertheless, the remaining managers knew better than to voice their apprehensions (sự e sợ, lĩnh hội) when the CEO and his hand-picked CFO put a good face on the situation.

"Put a gloss on" nghĩa là gì?

Tô ít son cho đỡ nhạt. Photo by  Candice Picard

"Put a gloss on" = Đánh bóng lên -> Làm điều gì trở nên tích cực, có thể được chấp nhận hơn so với thực tế của nó.

Ví dụ
Chisholm’s successful kick at goal put eight points between the sides before late scores from Josh Hardcastle and former forward James Harrison put a gloss on the result for the visitors.

And they are also professionals, who can be trusted to put these feelings aside when making judgment calls. Neville has been absolutely scathing about aspects of Manchester United's management and never tries to put a gloss on a poor performance. But that's easy for a reporter to say. We're in the same boat.

Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had addressed a fresh letter on Kashmir to the UNSC in January, and this time China decided to introduce it into a previously scheduled meeting under the agenda provision of “Any Other Items”. French lead was quickly endorsed by the other permanent and a number of non-permanent members bringing the meeting to a closure. The Chinese action, which came after the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in October, makes it clear that China remains insensitive to India’s core concerns (vấn đề/mối quan tâm quan trọng). The announcements on “strategic communications” that differences do not become disputes and the plans of holding 70 major events in the two countries to mark 70 years of establishment of diplomatic relations (quan hệ ngoại giao) are unlikely to put a gloss on growing differences over China–Pakistan Economic Corridor, Belt and Road Initiative, Indo-Pacific, China’s veto on India’s membership of the NSG, and attempts to block the listing of Masood Azhar as a terrorist (kẻ khủng bố).

"Put a figure on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a figure on" = nêu số liệu cụ thể về cái gì; xác định đúng giá cả/giá trị của cái gì.

Ví dụ
Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster said she would "not put a figure" on how much money she will demand when she meets Boris Johnson in Belfast.

Mr Strachan subsequently told Tribune Business he was unable to put a figure on the total losses suffered by Bahamian vendors and others who provided services to the ill-fated festival, adding: “Fyre Festival had a considerable impact on so many Bahamians, not just in Exuma but also around The Bahamas.

Enormous sums of money will be spent, along with all that organisational and intellectual effort, just to make our lives about the same as they are now, just low-carbon. Ministers can’t even put a figure on how much this will all cost or if it is feasible (khả thi, có thể thực hiện được). No wonder the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders called the policy ‘a date without a plan’.

"Put a crimp in" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a crimp in" = (từ Mỹ, nghĩa Mỹ), (từ lóng) ngăn cản, thọc gậy bánh xe; cản trở.

Ví dụ
Modern drug dealers move around a lot, say the police who spend their days trying to put a crimp in Indianapolis' underground drug market.

But it’s the NRA’s call for “limitations” that Watkins fears could put a crimp in business. “I’d have to understand what that looks like,” says Watkins, who estimates 85 to 90 mobile billboards cruise the Strip on a regular basis. “But I get it. I’m not interested in clogging up the roads.”

Fitzgerald, who lives with his family in Deerfield, is a fitness trainer and competitive cyclist; he also coaches tennis at Frontier Regional High School and soccer at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. Up until about five years ago, he said, he was a meat-eater himself. But then he developed anaplasmosis (bệnh nhiễm anaplasma), a condition similar to Lyme disease (both are produced by tick bites) that causes comparable symptoms — fatigue (sự mệt mỏi), muscle aches, fever and headaches — and which put a crimp in his fitness work.

"Put a cork in it" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a cork in it" = Đóng nút bần -> Ngừng nói chuyện và im lặng.

Ví dụ
Celtic fans have told Champagne Charlie Nicholas to put a cork in it after his criticism of Leigh Griffiths over his goal celebration against Partick Thistle.

“He was good!” Roberts says. “I loved it. That night when I got home I tried my hand at yodeling (sự hát đổi giọng trầm sang giọng kim). My dad finally yelled at me to put a cork in it and go to bed.”

Senator, let me ask you this, Senator Feinstein has said that the Articles of Impeachment should be sent over at this point from the House. Do you agree with her or do you, you know, suggest she respectfully put a cork in it?

-----
In the middle of the 2000s, millions of Americans were complaining that they were losing their jobs, which were being offshored to China. Economists largely rejected these complaints. For instance, in 2004, Bush official and economist Greg Mankiw argued offshoring was largely a good thing and anyone who said otherwise was a quack. In asserting this he was simply reflecting the economic consensus. Ten years later, several economists pulled apart this consensus coining the term "China shock" in 2016. In other words, it took ten years for those within the discipline of economics to even be able to hear the views of millions of normal Americans being injured, and their views had to be laundered through other economists.

-----
In 2004, Ben Bernanke gave a speech (bài phát biểu) called the Great Moderation (điều độ, tiết chế), in which he lauded the placid (yên lặng, bình yên, không bị khuấy động (cảnh vật); điềm tĩnh (người)) prosperity (sự thịnh vượng) economists had brought forth (= produce, bear as fruit, tạo ra, là thành quả) since the 1980s. "One of the most striking (nổi bật) features (đặc điểm) of the economic landscape (bối cảnh, quang cảnh) over the past twenty years or so," he argued, "has been a substantial (đáng kể, lớn lao, quan trọng, trọng yếu) decline (suy giảm) in macroeconomic volatility (biến động kinh tế vĩ mô)." As Bernanke was speaking, the FBI was warning of an "epidemic" of mortgage (khoản vay thế chấp mua nhà) fraud (gian lận). Needless to say a few years later there was the most gruesome (khủng khiếp, kinh khủng) financial crisis in 80 years.

"Nếu chúng tôi không nói sự thật, thì ai khác sẽ nói sự thật?"

Bác sỹ Lý Văn Lượng, người bị cảnh sát câu lưu vì lên tiếng báo động về dịch corona ở Vũ Hán, đã qua đời tối nay sau một thời gian nhiễm bệnh.
====
Nguyễn Đạt An:

"Straight as an arrow" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Hitesh Choudhary on Unsplash

"Straight as an arrow" = thằng như mũi tên -> nghĩa là thật thà, trung thực, đáng tin cậy.

Ví dụ
This is personal for me. I see these kinds of things in my work every day. But, Jackson was as straight as an arrow. Good guy. Wanted to learn. It’s just very very tragic (bi kịch). So, I’m here to celebrate his life.

They have distinguished careers (sự nghiệp xuất sắc), they’re just as straight as an arrow, and they told the truth – and that’s, of course, the point of all this. I think the case will be filled out this week with equally productive hearings.

Along the line, the narrative (chuyện kể, tường thuật) about my role has been severely (nặng nề) twisted, but the dust will settle someday and the whole truth will come out as straight as an arrow.
