"Be put in my place" nghĩa là gì?

"Be put in (one's) place" = Đặt đúng cương vị/vị trí của mình -> Buộc phải khiêm nhường/hạ cái tôi or lòng tự trọng mình xuống; ai đó khiến mình cảm thấy bản thân không quan trọng hoặc không đáng được tôn trọng.

Ví dụ
I was bullied myself in the 9th. grade by “in group” kids just because I was the new kid in town and needed to be put in my place I guess.

I was once part of the problem: I remember selectively quoting the poem in my freshman year English class, only to be put in my place by a professor who suggested (nicely) that I should first bother to read the poem and give it a moment of thought before quoting it with misguided confidence.

There comes a time when I need to be put in my place. It happened a few years back when I caught up with a former student at Wintec. I'd met him several years before on his first night on campus at a first year enrolment evening. I always enjoyed meeting new students. Their dreams for the future and aspirations (nguyện vọng) for world fame were always uplifting to hear, even if their world view was somewhat naive.

"A put-up job" nghĩa là gì?

"A put-up job (affair)" = việc đã được sắp đặt trước -> Gian dối sắp đặt trước, bày mưu tính kế trước để lừa lọc ai.

Ví dụ
This article has been updated several times because of the meeting’s increasing craziness. It’s a **** show, a put-up job.

She initially declared for Leave in the run-up to the 2016 EU Referendum, only to defect noisily to Remain mid-campaign in what many suspected was a put-up job aimed at discrediting the Leave campaign by her ‘defection (sự đào ngũ, bỏ đảng)’.

In no particular order, Braun has distinguished himself by expressing his hope that the president* will look upon this whole matter as a kind of learning experience, by speculating that the Lev Parnas tapes were a put-up job, and that in the face of the fact that, like every other Republican politician since William Seward, Braun had his picture taken with that famous Volga Bagman.

"Put a jerk in it" = Kiểu phải hành động thật nhanh/thật vội và đầy thông minh (nghĩa cỗ).

Ví dụ
Come on! You will be late if you don't put a jerk in it.

“Put a jerk in it”, the girl whispers to her mom as they nervously speed-walk to catch Ionescu before she runs into the tunnel.

If your first choice can put a jerk in it and your second choice can wait, actively manage the decision process to culminate (lên đến cực điểm) at the same time.

"Put a downer on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a downer on" có từ downer là thuốc giảm đau, thuốc trấn thống -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm cho điều gì trở nên yếu đi/giảm bớt/nhàm chán/mất sự hấp dẫn.

Ví dụ
I don’t want to put a downer on the state of the WSL as I am really impressed with how far it has grown the game - we just need to keep pushing on and not stand still.

The 31st year of the competition was played in high spirits and even though numbers were down compared to last year, Yass Touch Association treasurer Bob Monkley said it didn't put a downer on what was another fantastically run tournament.

Hopefully things will improve on smaller wheels, but it’s also worth remembering that this car isn’t the finished product. We should, then, make an allowance for the interior, where we encountered a few plastics that weren’t quite up to production grade. Even so, the squishy dashboard (bảng đồng hồ mềm), large fabric inserts on the doors and expensive-feeling switches and buttons impressed us. Sadly, the dim-witted infotainment system with its yesteryear graphics and sluggis responses (phản ứng chậm) put a downer on things, especially because the hard-to-follow sat-nav got us lost several times.

"Put a contract out on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a contract out on (one)" = Sắp xếp/thuê ai để ám sát hoặc giết người nào đó.

Ví dụ
But before his conversion, Franzese did eight years in prison. The mob (băng nhóm tội phạm) put a contract out on him for walking away. He had a target on his back.

“I believe Hoffa put a contract out on John Kennedy to stop his brother,” said Dan Moldea, author of The Hoffa Wars. “I think the contract was picked up by Carlos Marcello, the Mafia boss in New Orleans, and Santo Trafficante, the Mafia boss in Tampa, Florida, who then arranged and executed the murder.”

Tate goes to Truth and actually tries to warn Ghost that he put a contract out on his life. But, Ghost won’t listen. He talks all kinds of mad trash (bã, rác rưởi) at Tate. Then Ghost makes the gregarious (sống thành bầy, thích đàn đúm) offer to invite Tate to his party that night. Ghost suggests that this will at least give Tate a chance to pivot (phụ thuộc, xoay quanh) to a new career without being forgotten. When Ghost excuses himself to go meet Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), Tate gets nervous that Tariq could be caught in the hitman crossfire (sự bắn chéo cánh sẻ, sự vượt qua tốc độ của đạn). He tries to warn Ghost again, but Ghost thinks that Tate just wants to talk trash. He tells Tate to leave well enough alone and get out of Truth.

"Put to the torch" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (something) to the torch" = Châm ngọn đuốc lên cái gì -> Cố tình thiêu cháy để phá hủy cái gì.

Ví dụ
But strong as the city was, it was not able to stand up to the invading army of Tiglat Pileser the Third, who put it to the torch in 732 BCE along with most of the rest of Samaria.

The Time Lords are dead. And it’s the Master that put it to the torch, so enraged by his own revelation that everything Time Lord society taught itself has been predicated on some unseen lie that he has been completely undone, left unhinged and driven to genocide (tội diệt chủng).

If any lingering (mỏng manh, kéo dài) doubt remained that Irish citizens need far greater transparency from the State on this regularly morphing (kỹ xảo morphing), biometric (sinh trắc học), wannabe national identity card, then the searing presentation in Dublin this week from the UN’s special rapporteur (người có nhiệm vụ chuẩn bị báo cáo) on extreme poverty, Philip Alston, surely has put it to the torch.

"Put (something) to a/the vote" = Đưa ra biểu quyết cho vấn đề/việc gì; đưa ra quyết định bằng cách bỏ phiếu.

Ví dụ
When put to a vote, the Council decided not to modify the current signature requirements. Song, however, encouraged further conversation on the issue.

He said the draft resolution, which initially said the US plan undermined the Palestinian peoples’ aspirations for independence, is still being discussed and will be put to a vote once those discussions conclude with “a formula that represents our positions.”

"If they were really serious about wanting to do this properly, they would have put it to a vote of the people because this town belongs to the residents, not to a handful of business owners," Schneider said Tuesday. "This is their town where their children hang out. Do they want to have their kids around open-drinking? Do they want to have their kids in danger of drunk drivers?"

"Put (something) into words" = nói điều gì ra lời, diễn tả điều gì bằng lời; nói ra hết suy nghĩ/tình cảm của mình.

Ví dụ
“Like a lot of people, it's hard to put into words what transpired, and the fact that it's a reality,'' Woods said. “Part of me thinks that it's not real.

“You know it’s hard to put into words what these girls accomplished this season, from having never played to playing varsity (đội đại diện cho trường đại học, trường cao đẳng hoặc trường phổ thông (nhất là trong các cuộc thi đấu thể thao)) basketball,” Coach Justin Millburg said of his team. “I’m proud of how hard they have worked.”

As the water levels dropped in the night the firefighters from Leeds and Bingley were able to drive an engine down to the property and rescue the Simone and her young girls. "I can't even put into words what hey have done," she said. "They were so calm and collective. They were all so really down to earth laughing and smiling and it made me feel so comfortable. "I would like to thank them so much. I just cant put it into words."

"Put in apple-pie order" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (something) in apple-pie order" = Xếp theo từng miếng bánh táo -> Sắp xếp/làm việc gì một cách ngăn nắp, gọn gàng và có tổ chức.

Ví dụ
Tony was a big gentle giant of over six feet tall, who was only ever known to lose his calm when a jersey (áo nịt len) or a ball was mislaid from of a Clan na Gael kit, of which he was the protector and ‘keeper, ensuring all were washed and cleaned and in apple pie order for all teams representing the Castletown outfit.

I called a friend, Tom Jaurigue. Not expecting him to come right over, I asked if he could fix my door tomorrow. Instead, he came over and, quicker than scat (đi đi, cút đi), Tom had it in apple pie order. Tom is one of the world’s best all-around fixers, no matter the problem, a genuine person, who cares about others, and a fine gentleman.

“If I kept one man there all during the winter season he would soon go clean bughouse (nhà điên) with lonesomeness,” said Mr. Sparrow. Ranger Brown, the younger man is kept on duty in the hardest part of the winter, which is theoretically over by Feb. 1st, and Mr. Momyer is the sole guardian the rest of the winter season. Everything was found in apple pie order at the lake by Mr. Sparrow.

Tổng thống Trump vẫn chưa lên tiếng về corona virus

sợ vi trùng thế mà (từ hồi xưa khi làm doanh nhân đã rất ngại/ghét bắt tay), giờ làm tổng thống, đứng đầu y tế mỹ, toàn giao cấp dưới trả lời...
When an outbreak (bùng phát) of the Ebola virus touched the United States’ shores in mid-2014, Donald J. Trump was still a private citizen. But he had strong opinions (ý kiến mạnh mẽ/quyết liệt) about how America should act.

Mr. Trump, who has spoken openly about his phobia (sự ám ảnh, nỗi sợ hãi) of germs (vi trùng, mầm bệnh), closely followed the epidemic (bệnh dịch), and offered angry commentary about what he said was the Obama administration’s dangerous (gây nguy hiểm) response (phản ứng). He demanded draconian (hà khắc, khắc nghiệt, tàn bạo) measures (biện pháp) like canceling flights (hủy chuyến bay), forcing quarantines (cách ly bắt buộc) and even denying (từ chối, bác bỏ) the return of American medical workers who had contracted the disease in Africa.

...Now Mr. Trump confronts another epidemic in the form of the coronavirus, this time at the head of the country’s health care and national security agencies... And while Mr. Trump has so far kept his distance from the issue, public health experts worry that his extreme fear of germs, disdain (khinh thị, khinh bỉ) for scientific and bureaucratic expertise and suspicion of foreigners could be a dangerous mix, should he wind up overseeing a severe outbreak at home.

"Put it down to" nghĩa là gì?

"Put it down to" = đổ cho, đổ tại, quy cho, gán cho.

Ví dụ
London's Alasdair Gold has dismissed suggestions of an imminent (sắp xảy ra) takeover and put it down to nothing more than pure speculation.

Emiton runs in the Unibet Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock on Saturday. I was disappointed with his return to action at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day but I put it down to him being rusty after an injury lay-off.

WHEN Derry author Claire Allan began experiencing pain in both her hands four years ago, she initially put it down to a flu-like virus working on her. A newspaper journalist at the time, whose work entailed taking shorthand notes and typing up stories, having sore hands was an huge inconvenience.

Tiền thuốc men đắt quá

ở mỹ, bay đi mexico rồi bay về còn mua được thuốc kê đơn rẻ hơn...

Lovell is one of about 10 state workers participating in a year-old program to lower prescription drug costs by having public employees buy their medication in Mexico at a steep discount compared to U.S. prices. The program appears to be the first of its kind, and is a dramatic example of steps states are taking to alleviate the high cost of prescription drugs.

In one long, exhausting day, Lovell flies from Salt Lake City to San Diego. There, an escort picks her up and takes her across the border to a Tijuana hospital, where she gets a refill on her prescription. After that, she’s shuttled back to the airport and heads home.

Lovell had been paying $450 in co-pays every few months for her medication, though she said it would have increased to some $2,400 if she had not started traveling to Mexico. Without the program, she would not be able to afford the medicine she needs.

Americans are worse at The Price Is Right than they used to be. On the game show, which has been running since 1972, four contestants are asked to guess the price of consumer products, like washing machines, microwaves, or jumbo packs of paper towels. The person who gets closest to the actual price, without going over, gets to keep playing and the chance to win prizes like a new car. In the 1970s, the typical guess was about 8% below the actual price. People underestimate the price by more than 20% in the 2010s.

This finding comes from recently released research by Jonathan Hartley, a data analyst currently studying public policy at Harvard University. A longtime fan of the show, Hartley was inspired to conduct his research after reading a research paper from 1996 that reveals contestants don’t use optimal bidding strategies—they too rarely bid just a dollar over the highest previous bid—and is one of the early economics papers to show how people could be irrational. Hartley wondered what else the data might show. He found that the accuracy of people’s guesses sharply decreased from the 1970s to the 2000s, and then stabilized in the 2010s.

And why? There are three main hypotheses:

First, inflation in the US was much higher and much less stable in the 1970s and 80s. When inflation is high and variable, people become more attentive to prices, noticing they are paying more for goods than before.

Second, the rise of e-commerce may have made people less sensitive to price. Research by the economist Alberto Cavallo finds that online competition has made prices more similar across sellers, both online and off. As a result, people may feel less of a need to do price comparisons.

Third, there are more products than ever. There are 50 times as many products at a grocery store than 80 years ago, according to the economist James Bessen.

"Beam with pride" nghĩa là gì?

Hạnh phúc vì được là chính mình. Photo by Charry Jin from Pexels

"Beam with pride" nghĩa là cười đầy tự hào, hãnh diện.

Ví dụ
As Indians beam with pride over Arvind Krishna joining the ranks of Silicon Valley’s crème de la crème, another group has a reason to rue (ăn năn, hối lỗi).

Parents of Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal beam with pride and joy as their daughter gets shortlisted for the prestigious (uy tín, danh giá) Padma Shri award.

But beyond that, I’m most proud of her because she’s coachable and she’s a fantastic teammate (đồng đội tuyệt vời), so that’s where I beam with pride is watching her be a great teammate and be successful.

It’s where billionaire and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will beam with pride years after he spent $500 million for a new roof for his stadium, to lure the big game back to Miami for the 11th time, the most of any city.

"Broad across the beam" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Pedro Sandrini from Pexels

"Broad across the beam" hoặc "broad in the beam" = to phần ở giữa.

I recognized her from the back as she walked away from me. Same height (just under my chin up close), same solid hips (“broad across the beam” as she'd say), same closecut auburn hair (tóc tém vàng nâu). She was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, as she would be.

In a central cleared square of bare beaten earth (khu đất nhiều bùn lầy trong công trình xây dựng) the Captain was leaning on a barrel and facing two men and a woman. No on Hurl knew. To her they looked seasoned, especially a silver-haired Dal Honese fellow as broad across the beam as they come.

Then this nondescript (người khó tả) may be described as being very broad across the beam, heavily and strongly built, and of burthen about three hundred tons. Her bows were as bluff (cục mịch) as those of an alderman should be, who has fairly eaten his way up to his civic dignity (phẩm chất công dân).

"Beam me up, Scotty" nghĩa là gì?

"Hãy đưa tôi lên trên đó!" Photo by Mukul Parashar from Pexels

"Beam me up, Scotty" đồng nghĩa với "get me out of here!" hoặc "take me away!"

“They look like beams of light (chùm sáng) shooting up into the sky,” she adds with a laugh “like, beam me up, Scotty!”

Police chief (cảnh sát trưởng) Paul Pedersen and members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service will be saying "Beam me up, Scotty" after taking the Polar Plunge into the frozen waters of Ramsey Lake.

As a kid, I heard “Beam me up Scotty” or “ May the Force be with you.” Glen Larson transported us to the 25th century with Buck Rogers and the beautiful Colonel Wilma Deering. Today, space is no longer a wild dream. It is a reality.

What we need to know is what the remaining power plant (nhà máy điện) fleet would have done if the nuclear power plants had not been phased out. We call this a counterfactual (phản tác dụng). Sort of like a parallel universe (vũ trụ song song) (which we never see in reality. Beam me up Scotty!).

"One big happy family" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Shane Rounce on Unsplash

"One big happy family" = đại gia đình hạnh phúc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là một nhóm người sống, làm việc cùng nhau hoặc ở gần nhau có quan hệ yêu thương, bền chặt. Đôi khi cụm từ được dùng mang tính mỉa mai.

Ví dụ
The phrase conjures images of working at home whenever you want, happy hours, unlimited PTOs, and having to act like “one big happy family.” Pet-friendly offices. Ping-pong tables. Zen rooms.

The Fear of Russian Meddling industry appears to be one big happy family, none of whom, it seems, have ever heard of paper ballots (phiếu kín) - one sure-fire (chắc chắn thành công) way to avoid outside interference in an election.

“Our whole thing is when we’re having events, they’re going to try not to, and when they’re having events, we’re not — we’re actually going to partner with each other and we’re not going to interfere because we’re going to be one big happy family and work with each other.”

Tâm trạng đang tan chậm!!! Photo by Dean Ward on Unsplash

"Not a happy bunny" = không phải chú thỏ con hạnh phúc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cực kỳ không hài lòng, cáu kỉnh, khó chịu.

Ví dụ
Pep Guardiola was not a happy bunny during Man City vs Liverpool today, after his side were denied a penalty after the ball hit Alexander-Arnold’s hand in the box.

Understandably gobsmacked (vô cùng kinh ngạc) following the news his wife had stitched him up with a fake baby, Adam is not a happy bunny at the start of The Stranger. Desperate for the truth, he rifles (lục lọi) through old boxes of memories – ultrasound scans, old photos, keepsake notes – before finally confronting his partner.

Piers Morgan has hit back at wife Celia Walden’s trolling, after she shared a steamy snap of ‘Mr Suds’ washing her car. And the Good Morning Britain presenter is not a happy bunny. Addressing her upload on today’s instalment (bài đăng), the 54-year-old fumed: ‘I don’t know Mr Suds but I’ll be finding out who Mr Suds is as a matter of urgency,’ to which Richard Arnold joked: ‘You’re not the only one!’

shared from fb Dau Tuan,

American Factory do Steven Bognar và Julia Reichert đạo diễn.

Hiệp định thương mại tự do giữa Châu Âu và Việt Nam (EVFTA)

by Dau Tuan, Hiệp định thương mại tự do giữa Châu Âu và Việt Nam (EVFTA) vừa được Nghị viện Châu Âu bỏ phiếu thông qua.

The “most modern, comprehensive and ambitious agreement ever concluded between the EU and a developing country” will contribute to setting high standards in the region, and could lead to a future region-to-region trade and investment agreement, said the Parliament, in an accompanying resolution adopted by 416 votes for, 187 against and 44 abstentions. The agreement is “a strong signal in favour of free, fair and reciprocal trade, in times of growing protectionist tendencies and serious challenges to multilateral rules-based trade”, MEPs stressed.

The agreement will remove virtually all customs duties between the two parties over the next ten years, including on Europe’s main export products to Vietnam: machinery, cars, and chemicals. It extends to services such as banking, maritime transport and postal, where EU companies will have better access. Companies will also be able to bid on public tenders put out by the Vietnamese government and several cities, including Hanoi. The deal also safeguards 169 emblematic European products...

Vietnam committed to ratify two bills as requested by Parliament, one on the abolition of forced labour, the other on freedom of association, by 2020 and 2023, respectively.

The trade deal can be suspended if there are human rights breaches.

an investment protection agreement providing an investment court system with independent judges to settle disputes between investors and state.
